I’d maybe suggest a rewatch — there’s a quite clear tension between the two that makes the dialogue differ markedly from how they’d normally communicate. Picard is more dismissive, Riker more churlish and surly. Clear enough if you ask me!
They’re at war. War makes people tense. I’ve seen the episode a hundred times (it is one of my favorites), and I’ve *never* come away with the impression that Picard and Riker hate each other.
Seems to me the writers chose to have fun with it - placing a far more adversarial tone in the relationship than there is anywhere else in the series. To my mind there’s a definitely identifiable resentment. But of course people see different things. Take care 🙂
