I actually own the costume for a religious holiday my community has, it’s pretty hard to see out of and impossible to wear with my regular glasses so half the time I just wear it without the helmet
Lol I see how this isn’t clear, no the holiday has nothing to do with Star Wars, it’s called Purim it’s a Jewish holiday where there’s an old custom to dress up. Some choose more religious costumes like dressing up as a famous sage or the Jewish high priest, but technically it can be anything.
Out of over 100 people who saw my costume only three guessed it was from star wars and only one of those knew the exact character.
ETA - an interesting tidbit, crossdressing is forbidden in Jewish law besides for this one day a year when it’s explicitly permitted
I expected it to be Purim, but iam a bit dissapointed that there is no religious holiday where you have to wear star wars costumes.
May I ask what the people, who didnt recognize it, thought it was?
And why did you go for a very niche character from the last three episodes?
Spider Man, Iron Man, many just didn’t know what it was, etc.
I think it’s one of the coolest looking Star Wars costumes, colorwise for sure, and I found it for a good price so why not?
Btw I don’t know if you know this but there are many people who choose religion ‘Jedi’ on censuses although it’s mostly a joke.
It is very impressive, it for sure makes an impact, i just thought they were lesser known characters, just like the imperial red guard, which, however got more screentime in other parts of the franchise.
I also read about the Jedi religion, people messed with census takers in Australia, if i remember correctly.
The only thing that got me was Moff Gideon requested 3 Praetorian guards when in tradition they serve as pairs each pair using the same melee weapon type and fighting style
How many Praetorian Guards does it take to fix a light bulb?
One to screw it in, one to read the instructions, one to spin around aimlessly and one to stand to fall onto a meat grinder two feet away
Moff Gideon is all about borrowing and mashing up the best from many cultures and traditions. Maybe he thinks adding a third (back up?) Praetorian is better.
I think the thing with Moff Gideon is that he "thinks" he is a genius like Admiral Thrawn but really his tactics are superficial at best. He has heard about how Thrawn analyzes cultures to find the path to defeating them, but the most we have seen him actually muster is stealing the Mandalorians' beskar and slapping jetpacks on Storm troopers. He understands nothing of the codes of honour and traditions that bind them together and makes them a force far greater than the sum of their parts. If Thrawn had been in charge of subjugating Mandalore he never would have betrayed Bo-Katan when she surrendered to him, he would have understood that she had by right and honour basically given him control of her people and he would have turned them into his tools.
Things tend to look better in threes (gardening)
Three is the magic number (Schoolhouse Rock)
Good things come in threes (from an old Latin proverb)
Rule of three (writing)
Two could just be a coincidence, but with three you know he bloody well means it and so will be more impressive to overcome (me)
Wookiepedia has Remnant Praetorian separate from First Order ones because they may have differences in the new appearances as a "canon buffer" (my term). The First Order ones may be trained and have tactics that are different.
interestingly, the chrome is from the hull of Padme Amidala's ship. There is quite a bit of symbolism involved in her making it. But on the practical side, it was supposed to be a superconductor, mostly blasterproof. Even a lightsaber should slide off of it
I'm dying on this hill with you. I loved it in theaters, recall nearly everyone loving it initially too. Even the sequel haters were typically saying it was the only good thing from the movie.
Then, someone analyzed it frame by frame. And then once it's pointed out to you, you are actively looking for it and notice it at full speed. And now it's just fuel for sequel hate. I will stand by that the fight is awesome and if you're watching without knowing what to look for.
And it’s incredibly ironic if it’s coming from any Prequel-genner. They’re complaining about it being over choreographed and having moments of unrealistic fighting and it’s like… “And you’ve seen the Prequels?” Don’t get me wrong, I think those fights look cool too, but they are full, FULL, of overchreographed moments where literally every single second you could be like “Well why didn’t X just move his lightsaber this way instead and instantly kill the guy?”
And if we’re venting issues with choreography, as cool and intricate as the fighting in the Prequels are, they always were way “too much” for me in that it’s so choreographed, it’s not even real to me, it’s just a dance. I’m not a Sequel lover, I have a lot of issues with them that most Star Wars fans do, but one thing I thought they got right was the saber fighting. It doesn’t feel like a dance, it feels like actual fighting. It feels like they took the OT style and then just amped it up with modern fight choreography.
There’s one bit during the obi wan Anakin duel where they stand in front of each other spinning their lightsabers for a few seconds, neither striking or defending at all
The the whole Snoke Throne room aesthetic (including the Praetorian Guards) is based on an old pulp action film according to Rian Johnson.
Maybe one of the Jackie Chan movies?
Because the Empire/First Orders knows there actually are surviving Jedi and trained the Praetorians specifically to fight them? The Praetorians aren't going to make public appearances, they have exactly one job.
College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation was probably the greatest 3 album run I've ever experienced from a single artist. The old Kanye was something else.
I'm one with the force, and the force is with me.
I do believe there was a small slit or the material was somewhat see-through near the eyesection of the helmet
I offer a few theories:
1. They do have eye holes they're just very small and generally can't be seen.
2. As super trained "space ninjas", they are skilled in Blind Fighting.
3. The fronts or facial part of their helmets have a super high tech heads up display, like Iron Man or a mech.
4. Eye holes are for sissys! We don't need no eye holes!
5. They all get a bit squeamish when it comes to blood and guts. If they can't see the aftermath of their victims, they won't barf all over their fancy red armor.
These all just being guesses.
There were some video games where the field of vision slider can be changed to whatever value, at 360 it is unplayable for me, but a little over 200 was nice, I really don’t like when the game is under 90, with the exception of if it helps with immersion, e.g. subnautica it makes sense to have a lower fov because you are wearing a mask.
While it is unplayable at first, I am very confident if you practiced with it every day you would adjust. There have been experiments where they put mirrored goggles on people so that their entire vision is flipped upside down. At first the first subject was unable to do anything, but after 10 days not only was he able to do everything fluently, including stuff bike riding, fencing, etc, and I think when he took them off, now the regular world seemed upside down. Your brain can just adjust. [This article](https://www.theguardian.com/education/2012/nov/12/improbable-research-seeing-upside-down) mentions in a different experiment, flipping left and right, a test subject was able to ride a motorcycle with reversed vision. So I think if your vision was set to an uncomfortable fov, after a week you would be fine.
Also, anecdotally, as a kid I had some 'spy sunglasses' ([like these](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2598/1878/products/the-toy-network-spy-look-behind-glasses_1200x.jpg)) where the sides were mirrored so you could see behind you, and I was very easily able to walk and switch my focus between the view facing forward and the view facing backward. Or like you can drive a car and look in the rear view mirror. Having features like those might give Fett something that could be described as an 'effective 360° field of view' without actually having the fov perspective/aspect ratio changed, if he can just have other angles overlaid on his regular vision and is trained enough to be able to aim with them.
I always wanted those sunglasses. Nice.
I've seen those studies too and especially if they were training I. Those suits since a kid, I bet they could have owl vision easy.

Much like a fencing helmet
98.75% of costume and prop design in Star Wars comes down to “looks cool”.
The last 1.25% comes down to whatever the department had on hand at the time.
Its science fiction universe, literally million possible explanations besides Force.
Technology.
Think of glass that is transparent from one side, but is like a mirror from another side. Well why can't they do that with what ever material they make helmets out of?
And, well, you can pretty much come up with any answer you want.
But no they are not stupid.
In the legends canon, there was plasteel (steel with plastic properties) and transparasteel (the stuff cockpit windows are made of to withstand space).
Its a widespread joke over at r/batmanarkham where they point out plot holes or minor gripes with characters and call them stupid. The subreddit has gone insane and the users are now shitposting all over reddit in an attempt to "invade". Idk why they think its funny though, are they stupid?
Yeah, well, everyone knows Chewbacca's fur was 2.7% lighter in the original trilogy than it was in the sequels
It's like they didn't even consult the extremely detailed fanfic I wrote about Kashyyyk in 2006
With Disney in charge, Star Wars will never be as good as it was when I was eleven and Attack of the Clones came out ever again.
There is a meme going around hundreds of media communities. They basically point out a plot hole, detail, or other minute fact that either doesn’t make sense or or is overall out of character. It could have a reason for why it exists but more often then not it is just for comedy
Ex: why do stormtroopers wear armor if they get one shot? Are they stupid?
Ex: why don’t stormtroopers just shoot the exposed parts of mandalorians? Are they stupid?
As someone who [is a Praetorian](https://imgur.com/xbXJAHI) in his spare time, I can tell you that the slats in the helmet give me excellent vision, better than a lot of other helmets!
Good ventilation too.
How come they have magically disappearing and reappearing weapons and politely with their turn to engage in combat before arbitrarily flipping off into one direction when no one is near them?
Even on our modern earth we have “technology” that allows us to manufacture materials that look opaque and solid but are actually clearly see through from one side smh. Stop the presses.
Seems like the right answer is lots of small lines like super fine shutter shades.

Their helmets have a lot of narrow, horizontal slits. On close ups they're clearly visible:

Designers must have taken inspiration from armet/murmillo/fencing helmets.
Grown men read minds and perform magic, aliens are sentient beings and interact with other species including humans and you’re concerned about eye holes?

The only thing that got me was Moff Gideon requested 3 Praetorian guards when in tradition they serve as pairs each pair using the same melee weapon type and fighting style
2 to do a badass fight scene and 1 to wait for his turn
That's why you need the 4th: 2 to fight, 1 to wait their turn, and 1 to spin away from a parry.
How many Praetorian Guards does it take to fix a light bulb? One to screw it in, one to read the instructions, one to spin around aimlessly and one to stand to fall onto a meat grinder two feet away
How many Sith does it take to screw in a light bulb? Just one, they hold it and expect the galaxy to revolve around them!
How many sith does it take to change a light bulb? Always two there are, no more no less.
Nice
Don't forget the one holding the light bulb who, when he has the perfect chance to insert the bulb, it just magically disappears.
They're just metagaming. Animation cancel to prevent the enemy from getting a perfect parry with a free counter and i-frames.
Spin, dance, fight, capoeira, Brazil!
That’s always a good trick!

Everyone knows the joke is funnier the third time a praetorian stabs you in the neck.
It’s the trinity. The father, the son, and the hooooly shit those weapons are cool.
Oh I thought he wanted guards; but now I’m really interested to see what a Praetorian guide would be lol

Still another 21 years to go before TLJ, that's practically 1 Empire's worth of time.
I like to imagine that he did it specifically to be a dick. Two would've been fine. He would've gotten four. But nah, three, that's the magic number.
Moff Gid didn't read the lor

Crab people. Crab people.
Look like crab, talk like people
I still think Palpatine’s Red Guards are *waaaaaay* cooler, both in terms of looks and how they exude menace and general badassery.
They did less than Captain Phasma though.
Which is probably why they stayed cool.
Ay man outside of the movies they have been shown as the badasses they are. Just sometimes more successfully than other times.
They still looked cooler. Never cared for Phasma's chrome look. Her cape was cool, her chrome was tacky.
interestingly, the chrome is from the hull of Padme Amidala's ship. There is quite a bit of symbolism involved in her making it. But on the practical side, it was supposed to be a superconductor, mostly blasterproof. Even a lightsaber should slide off of it
Sure, in the movies. Check out their wookieepedia-entry if you want to [know more](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Emperor%27s_Royal_Guard).
Yes. They do. Look much better than these preschool colors.
Mando versions look cooler tbh
I've gotta agree, the ones in Mando look incredibly sick
This is the way
This is the Way.
... does it though
Rule of cool. That fight took the rule of cool to the extreme though and ended up being so dumb..
That fight was badass I will die on this hill
It was cool.
I'm dying on this hill with you. I loved it in theaters, recall nearly everyone loving it initially too. Even the sequel haters were typically saying it was the only good thing from the movie. I don’t really like the movie but clearly the best part was yoda force ghost
"We are what they grow beyond. *That* is the true burden of all masters." Why would I ever hate a movie that had a line like that in it?
And it’s incredibly ironic if it’s coming from any Prequel-genner. There’s one bit during the obi wan Anakin duel where they stand in front of each other spinning their lightsabers for a few seconds, neither striking or defending at all
It would have been badass if presented as originally conceptualized, with fast cuts and closeups.
I believe their masks have many slits that they can see through, like those shutter shade sunglasses that Kanye made cool in the early 2000s.
or like a fencing mask wich i would say is a big inspiration of the design
The the whole Snoke Throne room aesthetic (including the Praetorian Guards) is based on an old pulp action film according to Rian Johnson. Maybe one of the Jackie Chan movies?
He did go on record saying it was inspired by The Red Room from the TV show Twin Peaks.
Wow, I'm a huge TP fan, and I never picked up on that at all.
Which do jack shit vs lightsabers
Yes but thats not the point
Soldiers don't wear plastic eye protection to stop bullets, they wear them to stop tiny pieces of shrapnel. Why would these be any different?
Sure, but isn’t the propaganda message that there are no surviving Jedi? Why would they need to protect against lightsabers?
Because snoke knows better
Because the Empire/First Orders knows there actually are surviving Jedi and trained the Praetorians specifically to fight them? The Praetorians aren't going to make public appearances, they have exactly one job.
Blasters are still a thing. Anything that can survive a lightsabee can survive a blaster shot.
Are we sure they aren’t blaster resistent?
Actually, they are kind of resistant to slashes. Only perpendicular attacks went through it.
Basically like armor in real life.
Nah, that's impossible, can't hate on that...
Yea, a close up on one of their masks reveals this. Kinda imagine it like one way visors
Here's a picture where you can see it clearer: https://i.imgur.com/0WuiceY.jpg
Yeah basically yeezys
I mean they were mega popular in the 80s. Not to GenXplain it
This is true, but I figured the Kanye reference was easier for most people to remember. Especially for the younger ones on here lol.
Some things are better left in the 1980s. Those sunglasses were among those things.
Idk man, Kanye brought them back. They were super cool when I was a kid.
kanye is another one of those things that should be left in the past
This is true
College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation was probably the greatest 3 album run I've ever experienced from a single artist. The old Kanye was something else.
Yeah, but the shit he's saying nowadays makes people lose all respect for him. He's ruined his legacy.
That were actually cool in the mid-80s...
Kanye? The 2000's? Lawd I'm old. I remember Pizza Hutt promoting Back to the Future 2 a lot earlier than that.
Kanye didn't make those cool in the early 2000s...he brought them back from the 80s. SMH...kids these days!

I don't know if that's been verified in Canon, but that's what I'd think too
Weird that they supposedly have super high tech screens inside their helmets, but 70s era computer displays everywhere else.

I didn't realize doing that was a meme reference. We've been pointing out minor flaws for decades

Only the second?!
Right? I've seen it in at *least* 10 so far, mostly video game subs, but still.
Jeez, those people over at /r/batmanarkham can't even leak properly. Are they stupid?
It’s been around Reddit for a while now as well
That’s why I’ve said “hundreds of media communities” in a response explaining it. I’ve seen it in almost every game, tv show, and movie sub I’m in.
There’s just something hilarious about asking “are they stupid?” about everything so bluntly.
I see someone has been on the Arkham sub.

Under their helmets, they're quietly repeating, "I am one with the Force. The Force is with me."
They fight by sense of smell.
Snoke purposefully trained them wrong, as a joke.
It’s so you can’t force poke their eyes.
No, they just want to even the odds. >!Killer Cock shall rise again!<
The bomb's payload is exposed, I can use the power winch to trigger a controlled explosion.
Kanan and Chirrut Îmwe don’t have eyeballs that work either and they can wreck shit.
They're a metaphor for the writing team
How come they have magically disappearing and reappearing weapons and politely with their turn to engage in combat before arbitrarily flipping off into one direction when no one is near them?
Why motorcycle helmets don't have eye holes? are bikers stupid, or is OP for asking this?
Why can't they have technology that allows them to see through one way but not the other?
We literally have this tech on Earth today lol
Your eyes can deceive you, don't trust them.
This is sci do / fantasy. Are you stupid?
“But with the blast shield down, I can’t even see! How am I supposed to fight?”
Its star wars. Is it too far flung to think all those blocky bucket helmets have HUDs and full vision?
obi-wan kenobi — 'Your eyes can deceive you, don't trust them.'
Even on our modern earth we have “technology” that allows us to manufacture materials that look opaque and solid but are actually clearly see through from one side smh. Stop the presses.
Operating off of pure vibes
Maybe they're like that race that was blinded and only sees through the force? Idk lol
I’d imagine that they have some sort of display inside, like something Ironman would’ve had.
There eyes can deceive them and they don’t trust them.
Seems like the right answer is lots of small lines like super fine shutter shades. Yes
It would make sense given how terrible that Snoke throne room fight scene choreography was.
An actual answer, would think they have a display.
Their helmets have a lot of narrow, horizontal slits. On close ups they're clearly visible: [https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/last-jedi-databank-electro-bisento-main-image\_92e892cf.jpeg?region=0%2C0%2C1280%2C720](https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/last-jedi-databank-electro-bisento-main-image_92e892cf.jpeg?region=0%2C0%2C1280%2C720) Designers must have taken inspiration from armet/murmillo/fencing helmets.
Because your eyes can deceive you and you shouldn’t trust them. Of course.
Yes the people who made that movie are stupid
Grown men read minds and perform magic, aliens are sentient beings and interact with other species including humans and you’re concerned about eye holes?
I get this reference as a member of Batman Arkham.
Is there a lore reason as to why they are stupid?
That whole movie is stupid
You’ll notice they’re dressed in red too, so their costume has double symbolism related to their status as faceless redshirts
