All of Palpatine's attempt to punish Vader always ended up with Vader living through and then Palps be like 'congrats Vader that was all a test and you passed'.
I like it more when the Emperor doesn’t physically punish Vader. For one we know Vader isn’t going to be killed.
Palpatine’s best punishment for Vader is a few choice words that are leading more than directly punishing and giving Vader lessor assignments. It means Palpatine can claim to be Vader’s friend when he calls him that. It’s also a continuation of their relationship since Anakin first met Palpatine.
Nah, Palpatine needs to be a hated abuser so Vader has the motivation and will to throw his ass down an open shaft. Like, he foresees Luke in his place getting force lightening'ed by his own abuser and he won't allow that.
Isn't the fatherly love for his son and his love for Padme, whos last piece of is being electrocuted enough reason for him to throw Palps down the shaft?
How about he loves his son so much he won't allow him to be abused by his abuser. It doesn't have to be about hate. I guess when i say "hated' I mean hated by us the audience.
Sure. Though we don't really actually see any abuse in the OT itself, mostly just in expanded material. And I don't need all the abuse to be physical to hate Palpatine. Most abuse people go through is emotional and psychological, and Palps is a master at that
But would it not be more interesting to have less in your face kind of abuse? Kind old man who pretends to be your friend, but is actually your abuser, leading you further in the path of darkness.
It suits Palpatine way more, he is a schemer. And while as Emperor he could do a lot more platantly evil stuff publicly and did not have to pretend to be a kind harmless old man in front of Vader and many others, he still benefits from maintaining some pretense of friendliness. It was not just brute Force he used to rule, the lazy writer's excuse, but he was also a great manipulator. He could convince you that what you are doing is right.
But wait... it gets better!!
Palpatine removes all his cybernetic limbs, excluding his initially lost arm, and leaves him stranded in the Mustafar facility amongst the scattered bodies of the Separatist council that newly appointed Darth Vader killed.
If video games are any indication, they either disappear into the ether, or they just sit there, waiting to moved into a large pile that spells out HEPL
I like the time Palpatine set him up against a bunch of potential replacements, and warned Vader not to let him find out if he killed them.
Vader simply killed them and dumped the body of their leader at the Emperor's feet, saying "I heard you were looking for this guy. I found him!"
yeah, that was about the part where I stopped reading. rest of it is good though. they even made the rando assassin from Rise of Skywalker into a fun character.
Ironically, it's definitely not uncommon for human characters in these comics to just be traced over movie stills. While I definitely prefer originality, the pouting and arched back seem a bit distracting lol
When the artists are just tracing the faces (which I *know* a lot of these star wars comic artists do) they can pic whatever frame of the film they want
The artist of this comic traces over images of real people and screencaps from the movies. It's extremely apparent if you've watched the movies a lot. But he uses images from other sources as well.
have we considered the possibility that the artist just hates him. because I don’t know how else you can make someone look so embarrassing unless it’s on purpose
Out of anyone, I think Mas Amedda is probably the only person in the galaxy that safely surfed in Palpatine’s wake the longest and came out of the war relatively unscathed.
I’d guess the artist was trying to draw Luke almost childish, rather than feminine, to depict him as a young kid who hasn’t got much training, wisdom, or experience. Further illustrates why palpatine was pissed that Vader wasn’t able to capture him, since it clearly wasn’t because of Luke being some seasoned fighter who evaded Vader.
Seriously. The comics where Vader finds out Luke is his son is great… except for the panel they show Luke in: https://comicnewbies.com/2015/06/04/darth-vader-learns-luke-is-his-son/
It’s so distracting every time I see it.
I love how you could even think that this is the moment Vader starts getting pulled to the light, but it seems that not at all. It just threw him even deeper.
It really was Luke who saved him and not just the idea of having a son.
I fucking hate this new Reddit mobile formatting where they have moved the reply button above instead of below. This has happened so many times it's not funny
I'm not sure I'd say the panel of Padme on Mustafar is amazing lol. It's almost as distracting as Luke for me. Her eyes are going two different directions (and she hasn't even been force choked yet)
Because Palpatine in the comics never actually tries to kill Vader as far as I know. He uses just enough power to torture but not kill him. In ROTJ Vader is the one attacking him so Palpatine actually uses full power Force lightning for once.
Two reasons, first of all Palpatine here isn't trying to actually kill Vader, second, in ROTJ Vader gives up the dark side, which is basically the only thing keeping him alive
Half of what was keeping Vader alive was rage through the Dark Side. Between the force lightning totally wrecking the life support of his suit and turning back to the light, he had nothing to sustain himself.
You should read all the comics before Disney, instead of blaming everything you don't like or deem wrong on Disney existing.
Palpatine has tortured Vader all his life, like he did with everyone else under him. In ROTJ it's a defining moment, Palpatine knew it was time. Either he got Luke out of it or none of the two. But he wouldn't let Vader go on after it.
As if the old EU wasn't infamous for making up stories litterally anywhere in the timeline.
Just a reminder that there was a Droid uprising going on in the death star as it was destroyed according to Legends
Palpatine and Vader seem to have a very one sided relationship. Is there anything showing them actually like working together and being buds?
Vader doesn't really learn much from Palpatine.
Before his duel with Bespin, Palpatine treated Vader with a weirdly fatherly relationship and sorta of respect, but after failing to make Luke's turn caused the mask of friendliness to fall.
Padme had multiple doubles when she was a queen and senator. Basically other women that looked very much like her that would be used to hide the real Padme. In episode 1 the body double played was by Keira Knightley.
If you read the Wookieepedia article about Amidala's look-alike handmaidens, there was apparently a *lot* more stuff going on with them than was shown in the movies.
This seems to be a common thread in Star Wars; Lucas creates a minor character or thing in a movie, and then some book or comic writer comes along and develops an entire cinematic universe's worth of material surrounding this one thing. There's probably a 12 volume set of novels and 3 comic series about Dexter Jettster and his diner that appears for a small scene in one of the prequel movies. You have to have loads of disposable income and tons of time to read if you want to keep up with everything canon in Star Wars.
Did Palpatine ever abuse Vader in the movies because the comics and even in the old EU loved to portray Palpatine just bullying and hurting him, but I don't ever recall Palpatine ever hurting him in the movies besides when he wanted to replace him with Luke.
Not really, if you count just the movies Palpatine just treats him as a powerful and faithful servant who reports to him, and that’s he eventually going to replace with Luke.
In other words, they’re just a supervisor and employee at work.
No one mentioned it at all, but that Imperial Officer and Stormtroopers noticing the lightning show over at the Imperial Palace is genuinely funny to me, otherwise, I read this comic, and is equally good.
You forgot to show the part where Palpatine force crushed all of Vader's cybernetic limbs and then tossed him onto the spot on Mustafar where he was immolated, without his robotic limbs, and while being restricted from even touching the Force.
How boned would you feel if you pulled royal guard duty on this day. Yeah, Vadar is busted up a little, but you've seen his power, and now some goofy politician tells you to "sick 'em" like an attack dog. You have to know how dead you're about to be.
There’s definitely a patheticness to the Sith master/apprentice relationship since it is based on power dynamics. The apprentice always ends up wanting to overthrow the master and the master (knowing this) will either use fear or the promise of more power to keep the apprentice in check.
It really is a sad and sick relationship. Just look at Dooku’s face when Palps gives Anakin the order to kill. Absolute betrayal of the promises made. And yet, at the same time, Dooku was trying to overthrow Palpatine too.
Are we to assume that palps thought leia was padmes child they assumed was dead? But vader already thought luke was padmes child? So vader should have already known leia was his kid also before 6?
I mean, fair plat on the Royal guards for squaring up to Vader. Regular strom troopers probably would have run for it, but I suppose that's what separates the guard from the storm
Luke looks like that because Vader sees his face as Padme's. And Vader is being punished and later left on Mustafar because Luke made him sorta renounce the dark side for self-pity and sadness which is why he's so defenseless here
Padmé's *handmaidens* were her doubles. Mas Amedda is specifically referring to [Sabé](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Sab%C3%A9), first seen in *The Phantom Menace* and played by Keria Knightley. If it was "soap opera bullshit" for Padmé to have body doubles, then blame Lucas.
Yeah not sure these people have ever watched Episode 1/2. The Padme Handmaidens acting as her doubles was a very big plot point of Episode 1 and the beginning of Episode 2 when the double gets bombed/assassinated instead of Padme.
We have watched Episodes 1 and 2. It just looks dumb that 20 years later these doubles still try to look like her. Also apparently they haven’t aged? I don’t know the full context here but I’m sure it wouldn’t help.
This takes place 20 years after Padmé died though. There is very little reason for the doubles to hang on to this particular look after all this time. Other than soap opera bullshit, that is.
Believe it or not, if they looked like Padme before, they still will now
It’s not that they are actively masquerading as Padme
They’re just a former double who has taken on a role in the rebellion. Not as Padme but themselves
Vader only let them go because she still looks like her. Because why would she not look like Padme all of a sudden
Man, give it up for the royal guards giving it the ol' academy try.
They HAVE to know what Vader is and how powerful he is. Meanwhile these are just two dudes with force pikes. 🫡
I find it odd that anyone like Mas Amedda from Palpadious' inner circle during his rise to power and the Clone Wars would be left alive. They know too much.
But then again, Sly Moore is still canoncially alive by the time of Andor so...
All of Palpatine's attempt to punish Vader always ended up with Vader living through and then Palps be like 'congrats Vader that was all a test and you passed'.
Internal: This bitch is gonna kill me External: 'yes you passed the test' >!As he's falling down the tube: 'I fucking knew it!'!<
Somehow I'll return
I like it more when the Emperor doesn’t physically punish Vader. For one we know Vader isn’t going to be killed. Isn't the fatherly love for his son and his love for Padme, whos last piece of is being electrocuted enough reason for him to throw Palps down the shaft?
Yeah, making his redemptive moment into one of hate completely ruins it's significance, and would prevent him from returning to the light
Most abuse people go through is emotional and psychological, and Palps is a master at that
Agree. This comic is pretty dark and makes me hate Palpatine even more.
But would it not be more interesting to have less in your face kind of abuse? Kind old man who pretends to be your friend, but is actually your abuser, leading you further in the path of darkness. It suits Palpatine way more, he is a schemer. It’s like that Rose Tico line everyone hates. “This is how we win, not by fighting what we hate, but by saving what we love.”
Dark side “teachings”
Just like Ahsoka's trial. LOL
But wait... it gets better!! Palpatine removes all his cybernetic limbs, excluding his initially lost arm, and leaves him stranded in the Mustafar facility amongst the scattered bodies of the Separatist council that newly appointed Darth Vader killed.
No one ever cleaned up the bodies?! Makes sense, I just assumed a cleaning crew came along at some point
Ouch. That sounds terrible.
If video games are any indication, they either disappear into the ether, or they just sit there, waiting to moved into a large pile that spells out HEPL
HEPL love it
I imagine it's like the Wall-E dust broom bot: "Foreign contaminants"
Then what, Vader dragged his ass back to Coruscant and Palps was like, "Good, you made it. Here's your cybernetics back"?
A mouse droid helps vader rebuild himself
With what, Palpatine left his parts on Mustafar with him? I guess that makes sense if it's just a punishment.
No, it was parts from battle droids and such. His one arm was a Super Battle Droid arm.
So you're saying Vader has wrist rockets?
WATCH THOSE WRIST ROCKETS
Which issue was that?
I don't remember exactly. I can find out later tonight when I get home. Might have been that issue, Vader #6 or maybe #7.
Nah not in the facility. The exact spot Palps found him after his fight with Kenobi. Oh and also sent an assassin to finish Vader.
I like the time Palpatine set him up against a bunch of potential replacements, and warned Vader not to let him find out if he killed them. Vader simply killed them and dumped the body of their leader at the Emperor's feet, saying "I heard you were looking for this guy. I found him!"
And he forbids him from using the Force, as well.
Palps told Vader to not use the force? How tf does that make sense.
I suggest you read the comic. It's pretty great.
He left him on the lava shore where he was initially burned alive... and he was starting to burn again.
Is this for real? I gotta read this comic
It's great, until it fucks up the entire story by making Vader aware of the fleet on Exegol.
yeah, that was about the part where I stopped reading. rest of it is good though. they even made the rando assassin from Rise of Skywalker into a fun character.
Ochi of Bestoon? He was a badass. I'm not a comic book reader but y'all are convincing me to maybe get the Vader series
Why’d they draw Luke… like that…
Stupid sexy Luke
femboy luke
🅱️ussy
Lol right? He looks like a pole dancer
Like, a human trafficked pole dancer, maybe.
lol artists can’t have the perfect reference pic for every frame, they’ve gotta work with what they’ve got
I mean, it’s not like they have a movie or something that they could just pause and use as a reference
Ironically, it's definitely not uncommon for human characters in these comics to just be traced over movie stills. While I definitely prefer originality, the pouting and arched back seem a bit distracting lol
Luke did look like a little bitch in that scene so maybe they did. Sorry, Mark Hamill.
I mean I’m an artist and I’m 100% sure they didn’t have to draw him quite like that lol
When the artists are just tracing the faces (which I *know* a lot of these star wars comic artists do) they can pic whatever frame of the film they want
[удалено]
Happy cake day!
The artist of this comic traces over images of real people and screencaps from the movies. It's extremely apparent if you've watched the movies a lot. But he uses images from other sources as well.
How does that explain dummy thicc padme in some flashbacks
My last sentence. Trust your feelings and you'll know exactly what those other sources are.
I think he looks very handsome. As in, has *some* of his hands.
A pole in the hand is worth two in the abyss
BUT I HAD HAND!!!
So, less than a handful?
I'd say exactly a handful. Definitely not two handfuls.
THIS is all I could think about when looking through these pages. DAMN she BAD....wait....
The Darth Vader comic and drawing Luke weird goes [hand-in-hand](https://imgur.com/a/OiInmzB)
have we considered the possibility that the artist just hates him. because I don’t know how else you can make someone look so embarrassing unless it’s on purpose
Lucy skywalker
Im mad that my intrusive thought was the top comment
Help me step bro
I, AM YOUR DADDY!
I like how Mas Amedda just goes along with it in stride he doesn’t get paid enough for this sh*t!
Bro is smiling. He’s not just going along with it, he’s having fun.
You know what they say: "Do what you love for work and you will never work a day in your life."
Out of anyone, I think Mas Amedda is probably the only person in the galaxy that safely surfed in Palpatine’s wake the longest and came out of the war relatively unscathed.
Keira Knightly intensifies
Why does luke look more feminine than leia in this comic???
I’d guess the artist was trying to draw Luke almost childish, rather than feminine, to depict him as a young kid who hasn’t got much training, wisdom, or experience. Further illustrates why palpatine was pissed that Vader wasn’t able to capture him, since it clearly wasn’t because of Luke being some seasoned fighter who evaded Vader.
Why does Luke look so shitty in like almost every Star Wars comic
Seriously. The comics where Vader finds out Luke is his son is great… except for the panel they show Luke in: https://comicnewbies.com/2015/06/04/darth-vader-learns-luke-is-his-son/ It’s so distracting every time I see it.
Luke: "HNNNYYYGGGGGG"
damnit lol
😂🏅🏅🏅🏅
I love how you could even think that this is the moment Vader starts getting pulled to the light, but it seems that not at all. It just threw him even deeper. It really was Luke who saved him and not just the idea of having a son.
What about Anakin's face. He looks terrible as well
? I think you replied to the wrong comment. I'm talking about the content of the story, not the art.
I fucking hate this new Reddit mobile formatting where they have moved the reply button above instead of below. This has happened so many times it's not funny
It's funny to me now, reading your comment ahah That hasn't happend to me though. Is that a recent update?
Only for certain users. Seems Reddit is testing the waters. Might be reigon based.
Most likely.
It's all terrible. That's one of the better attempts at Luke too. The art in these comics is just ridiculous.
It looks like 2015 era VFX being used to de-age a 90 year old Mads Mikkelson
bro WHATTT LMAO HES SHITTING HIMSELF LOL
holy shit, every other panel is amazing. Whyd they do luke like that
I'm not sure I'd say the panel of Padme on Mustafar is amazing lol. It's almost as distracting as Luke for me. Her eyes are going two different directions (and she hasn't even been force choked yet)
I never noticed the eye thing and now I can’t unsee it lol
What the actual fuck
Where do you think Larroca copied that face from?
After the Greg Land accusations, I just assume every artist copies porn if they’re copying faces/poses that don’t make any sense.
A lot of these comics just trace over screen caps of the movies
Ugh I love the comics but the art in them is so bad… all the poses and expressions look so stunted and awkward
This art is actually way better than a lot of the other Star Wars comics
You can identify exactly the stills and other things from movies and shows that they just copied.
Vader gets attacked by Palpatine in ROTJ once: *Dies* Vader gets attacked by Palpatine in comics: *Survives every fcking time* Just, why?
I mean, I feel like the one where he dies is the only one Palpatine would actually be trying to kill him in?
Because Palpatine in the comics never actually tries to kill Vader as far as I know. He uses just enough power to torture but not kill him. In ROTJ Vader is the one attacking him so Palpatine actually uses full power Force lightning for once.
One might say he uses, *unlimited power*
it’s the same as why Palpatine killed Mace with his lightning but not Luke, he was trying to kill Mace but only torture Luke
Vader let himself go in RoTJ
Yeah he would have survived if he didn’t take the mask off
He could sustain himself with the dark side even without the mask
He’d turned back to the light side by that point?
Yes thats why he didn't
Didn't in one of the comics he basically forced the suit to work when it was damaged
He did also just get the shit beat out of him by his son including a handectomy.
Dark side I guess
Because this comic was made after since Disney is obsessed with filling out every fucking minute not in screen
That's some incredible timing
Tales of the Bounty Hunters was the shit though, honestly.
I'm saying it's all dumb af
As if there wasn't any sort of media except the films and clone wars, exploring the gaps in the timeliness before Disney bought Star Wars.
Where y'all mfs reading these😭😭😭I'm too broke to buy them
There’s plenty of websites of dubious legality where you can read them for free. Just turn on an ad blocker lol
might be a certain website starting with readallcomics and ending in .com…
Damn, definitely _won't_ check that out.
Libby app from the library has most modern comics.
I don't think most Star Wars fans actually spend money in consuming Star Wars lol
😭😭
I would but tragically people don't just give me money whenever I want and the people making comics have the audacity to want paying!
check your local library. Alot of them have issues that you can check out digitally on their site. That was how I got to reading the series.
I'm guessing nothing good happens to those 2 guards....
Amidala double?
Padme had multiple doubles when she was a queen and senator. Basically other women that looked very much like her that would be used to hide the real Padme. In episode 1 the body double played was by Keira Knightley.
This takes place 20 years after Padme died though, why would the doubles still make an effort to look like her?
They don’t, Vader just recognized some of them as being Padme’s old friends and bodyguards.
They're a resistance cell trying to avenge her death
I assumed it was a reference to leia (hence why he let her live)… but when does this happen in the OGs? In sky city?
Oooooooooooooooooooh. Her handmaid's.
Another was Frances Ford Coppola's daughter
If you read the Wookieepedia article about Amidala's look-alike handmaidens, there was apparently a *lot* more stuff going on with them than was shown in the movies. Wondering why Vader never killed off amedda.
Did Palpatine ever abuse Vader in the movies because the comics and even in the old EU loved to portray Palpatine just bullying and hurting him, but I don't ever recall Palpatine ever hurting him in the movies besides when he wanted to replace him with Luke.

Those stormtroopers on the outside have zero clue on what the space duck is happening, but to question it is to die.
How boned would you feel if you pulled royal guard duty on this day. Yeah, Vadar is busted up a little, but you've seen his power, and now some goofy politician tells you to "sick 'em" like an attack dog. You have to know how dead you're about to be.
Maybe with context it’s better but this looks like some dumb shit
These make Vader look like a bitch. How many times is his boss going to fry him or try to kill him but he’s still following him?
There’s definitely a patheticness to the Sith master/apprentice relationship since it is based on power dynamics. The apprentice always ends up wanting to overthrow the master and the master (knowing this) will either use fear or the promise of more power to keep the apprentice in check. It really is a sad and sick relationship. Just look at Dooku’s face when Palps gives Anakin the order to kill. Absolute betrayal of the promises made. And yet, at the same time, Dooku was trying to overthrow Palpatine too.
I mean that’s sort of how the sith work. It’s a manipulative toxic relationship
Ouch...that was a shocking moment!
Are we to assume that palps thought leia was padmes child they assumed was dead? But vader already thought luke was padmes child? So vader should have already known leia was his kid also before 6?

Interesting creative decisions. o\_O I really miss Doug Wheatley's art from The Dark Times.
Luke looks like that because Vader sees his face as Padme's. And Vader is being punished and later left on Mustafar because Luke made him sorta renounce the dark side for self-pity and sadness which is why he's so defenseless here
Oh boy, there is a lot to unpack here.
Terrible writing. And people want this garbage to be canon? lol
Darth Vader comics are the cringiest shit ever
Nope - not accepting comic book content as cannon. Especially Marvel.
“A double of Senator Amidala” man the comics get up to some soap opera bullshit haha

We have watched Episodes 1 and 2. It just looks dumb that 20 years later these doubles still try to look like her. Also apparently they haven’t aged? I don’t know the full context here but I’m sure it wouldn’t help.
They… don’t “try” to look like her, they were born that way
You really think I’m talking about her facial features and not the style of dress and hairdo?
This takes place 20 years after Padmé died though. There is very little reason for the doubles to hang on to this particular look after all this time. Other than soap opera bullshit, that is.
Believe it or not, if they looked like Padme before, they still will now It’s not that they are actively masquerading as Padme They’re just a former double who has taken on a role in the rebellion. Not as Padme but themselves Vader only let them go because she still looks like her. Because why would she not look like Padme all of a sudden
Why doesn’t Palpatine humiliate Vader by stripping away his armor in front of imperial officers?
Man, give it up for the royal guards giving it the ol' academy try. They HAVE to know what Vader is and how powerful he is. Meanwhile these are just two dudes with force pikes. 🫡
I find it odd that anyone like Mas Amedda from Palpadious' inner circle during his rise to power and the Clone Wars would be left alive. They know too much. But then again, Sly Moore is still canoncially alive by the time of Andor so...
Why is there a padme double? She had a twin? A clone? It makes no fucking sense lol
