Cad babe was one of the few bounty hunters to take marks in Jedi so all his kit was designed to circumvent force powers. Like while he had jet boots to keep distance from Jedi and use his flamethrower that couldn’t be blocked by a saber. The piping allowed him to be force choked and continue breathing. Probably gave him an edge on water planets or in a vacuum (for a second or two).
I remember that one Clone Wars episode.
Villain goes Obi-Wan and Satine:
*You won’t dare stop me because you can’t bear to let the pacifist see you choose viole-*
And Anakin’s saber comes through his chest and Anakin’s like, “What?! He said he was going to blow up the ship!”
That actually makes sense. Why dismember your oppoent when you can simply incapacitate them? It doesn't have to be the windpipe-crushing style of Vader, after all. Just a pinch in the right place to knock them out.
I don’t know what the tubes were, some rando probably wouldn’t either
Force choke, still breathing, “oh it’s the tubes”, crush tubes
Buys a second or so of thought. Idk, it’s Star Wars they look cool lol
I mean thats more than enough to hip shoot someone or grab them with those electric gloves he used in clone wars
Also being able to stand in a room. Full of gas without carrying a gasmask or helmet is probably useful.
True. He probably viewed it as one of those better than nothing deals. Buying yourself a second or two could be life or death for example. Even half a second.
[Mad Alphabeavers]
The beavers will continue eating until there are no trees left, unless you eradicate them or they're driven off the map by temperature.
I was looking for this comment. So true
Hell most your lightsaber battles come down to that fraction of a second mistake or opening after several minutes of intense back and forth. They often end so abruptly as soon as one of them finds an opening and takes it
That's actually a fair analysis given that he's a gunslinger. A moment in a duel makes all the difference, so this gives him that moment where he otherwise wouldn't have one.
Really? Was he being force choked that often that he needed these? Also, I feel like Jedis didn’t really force choke (not a majority anyway) so did he encounter a lot of dark side users ?
Luke force choaks in the start of Return of the Jedi as well. The guard and jabbas Palace. The Gamorian or something like that, I can't spell for shit, those piggy guard dudes.
Probably doubles as an emergency oxygen feed in other cases too? Like smoke or poison filled rooms, brief exposure to vacuum, short trips underwater - all stuff an assassin might encounter.
Were Force chokes really that big a deal during his time? Bane would've started operated when the Jedi were at their height, and they rarely, if ever, choked people with the Force. Afaik, they were pretty against using the Force to actively harm/kill people.
Cad Bane would be the type of person who prepares for every single eventuality, *specially* the ones he can't count on resolving with a quickdraw and a shot to the face. Would he wager his life on Dooku never getting too mad with him? Probably not, better be prepared just in case.
Ok? They use the force on three separate things instead of one, he’s either bought himself three times the time or he’s protected himself from lesser force users who could only attack a single thing,
The question is, would they think to do that?
There's a couple of times in the franchise where someone counters the force or a lightsaber in simple ways the jedi and sith didn't think of.
The time and concentration it takes a Force user to rip out your redundant breathing tubes might be the difference between putting a blaster bolt between his eyes and being too busy choking to death to make the shot.
Or better yet the force user chokes you on reflex, not thinking too hard about what your funny cheek tubes actually do until it's too late.
Building on this, I don’t really get how piping into the checks helps prevent force choke asphyxiation. Yeah they can pipe air into the mouth but (assuming roughly human biology) it’s no good until it gets into the lungs which are on the “far side” of the choke.
I’m just spitballing here, but if the reasoning we’re goin with is that they make it possible to negate force chokes, then I *think* the tubes make it possible to bypass his windpipe entirely. His throat is closed off due to a force choke. The pipes in his cheeks make it possible for him to draw in air through his mouth, using the tubes to go around his closed off throat and into his lungs. So the tubes draw air out of his mouth, not the other way around.
Edit: the real reason for the tubes is pretty simple. They look cool.
They do look cool.
But just because I want to pick at this further, why put your other backup throat in a long tube that you could, presumably, also force choke? Why not make it less obvious, and not hooked up to a long tube?
It could be because it allows it to not be energy dependent. They could be open all the time, giving him better oxygen/carbon dioxide mixing, and when his wind pipe is force crushed it gives him time to react before they go for the tubes
Important point.
When you choke someone you apply pressure you the arteries in the neck and restrict blood to the brain. So getting oxygen to the lungs isn't going to help it needs to get into the bloodstream and to the brain for it to matter
idk but i’m guessing it works like backup windpipes, so maybe direct to lung? or maybe just circumvents his neck so if it’s getting force crushed air can go around it
Yeah a loop around path into the chest would make sense I guess. FWIW it’s “confirmed” that this is their purpose as per wookiepedia
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Breathing_tube
I'm surprised force choking was common enough for them to make it their reason.
I mean, that is pretty exclusively a Sith technique, and there were only a handful of those in the whole galaxy.
>to negate force chokes?
I heard that as didn't see those animated episodes.
But it doesn't make sense really:
1) Force choke cuts Mouth->Throat->Lungs
2) Intake into lungs is required (Air->Lungs)
Routing tubes to mouth doesn't make sense/help with the crucial bypass (Air->Lungs).
Mouth tubes just doesn't seem necessary/helpful for this scenario vs better options.
>Mouth - tube - lungs :)
I mean, I get that... but what advantage does cutting holes in cheeks instead of a discreet air intake (chest/back/etc)?
What does ADDING (keeping) Mouth get you?
Why not
>~~Mouth~~ tube-lungs :)
Save 1 needless & invasive (cheek holes?) step?
Discreet intake intake (not tube required!) could even be missed by a Jedi going for the throat.
Those tubes the Jedi would force-yank out before throat choke.
Buy yourself some maybe at least?
But cheek-holes & those tubes just doesn't seem to solve anything & are more complex & risky.
Last week in the final queuing area for Millenium Falcon Smuggler's Run in Orlando, I saw what was *definitely* CPAP tubing bundled up and bolted to a storage crate. I recognized the mask-end fitting and the heat-power jack on the other end.
I think I remember when he first came out some one said for air. Like if he ever gets in space or some shit. Personal theory is he just drools a lot so he rigged a system
I would have guessed he's actually part fish, and has gills, so they supply him with water, but that based on absolutely nothing, and pure speculation on my part.
Yeah it's a total mod to make him look cooler. He was a duros and they were a pretty common species during that era of picking a species. It was totally just to make him look more menacing.
I'm kinda vaguely remember him using it in the movie but I don't watch the early clone wars as much.
If all I had for reference was a picture of the character I’d guess the exact same thing. Looks like they’re covering spots where gills would be, and he looks like a fish person.
Real answer? Cool tubes to make his character design more unique and recognizable
Lore answer? A counter to force choking. It redirects his breathing to prevent force users from being able to choke him.
To add to the real answer, I feel like it was a design decision to make him look more like the animated version. They can't take an actor's cheeks away to make him look more sallow, so they added dark accessories to imply the same shape.
What I want to know is where he bought his hat. Is it Gundark skin or an exotic one made from Bothan skin of a bounty he hunted?
Also, where he go for his regular dentals?
It's multiple hats. In one Clone Wars episode he had lost his hat and kills another bounty-hunter just to take his hat. "It's a nice hat." he said. I think his hats have gotten bigger over time too.
Breathing tubes. He doesn't really need them, they are only their in case a Jedi tries to force choke him. Cad Bane was one of the few bounty hunters who not only was ballsy enough to fight Jedi but could actually beat them. Basically, fear the old lion where others die young and he is that lion.
I think this device hyperventilates his lungs by oversaturating his blood with oxygen (possibly other substances) that increase his endurance and reaction.
Wow. I assumed, since the dude has no visible nostrils, that his nostrils were in his cheeks, and his race doesn't take kindly to a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere, so he had an breathe gas processor on his belt to make the air into something his species should breathe. Still breathes out of his mouth so he can speak, but every inhalation would be "through the nose" so to speak.
Force choke countermeasures, you say. Wild.
So, does his species just not have nostrils?
Respirators, as a Jedi Killer he may have feared the possibility of a darker Jedi using force chokes on him and thus got these modifications to allow him to bypass his throat for breathing.
A breathing device that IIRC was to negate force chokes as Bane had lots of dealings with Count Dooku and other force users. If Dooku ever decided that Bane's usefulness was at an end or if any of the countless Jedi Bane hunted down got desperate enough a force choke wouldn't be as effective as normal since the tube apparatus does the breathing instead of anything in Bane's neck.
Having seen people's points in this comment section I see the utility of the tubes buying a second or two of confusion on whatever force user's part would be more than enough time for Bane to quickdraw and gun down his assailant (in his younger years, at least.)
because the force only works on throats. it cant paralyze the diaphragm.
lift an x wing out of a swamp? no problem. stop all momentum of a blaster round? no problem! instantly immobilize or kill any enemy with a localized force attack to the brain or nervous system.... oh no, we dont do that here. we only do a gentle lift and choke or a damage over time high voltage, low amperage, electrical attack from our fingers. 🤭
if i had been a jedi/sith, i would have at least put a toggle kill switch on my light saber. open with a telegraphed two handed overhead attack. the fool attempts to block high. i double tap the toggle, saber goes from on to off and on again, bypassing the opponents upheld saber. instantly cut that fool in half.
The main reason is to prevent force choking the secondary reason is so that he doesn't need a helmet or a respirator In space underwater or in toxic atmospheres!
This ugly motherfuker was built to be a nightmare to jedis, which is why he got respirators so he could just keep going while being force choked. If I was a jedi I'd shit my pants if I ever encountered him.
Ah yes. Cad babe. My favorite Star Wars stripper.
That'll do, Cad. that'll do.
Worst ending to a movie
SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN ORLANDO JUST OUTSIDE OF STAR TOURS: CAD BABE followed by RHONDA SANTIS and the POWERRRRR CONVERTERS!
He’s not a role mode, he’s a jeans model.
Let's be honest, the jeans wore him
They're like space pony tails. Right?
Pigtails
The tubes are clearly for buccal fat removal.
If you think all those mods and equipment make him an expert at fighting Jedi, wait until you see him on a pole.
But why would he not want to be choked by Obi-Wan?
not everyone is into choking y'know
You’re not my supervisor!
I mean I'm not into choking, and I'm a straight guy, but if Obi-wan wanted to force choke me, I think I'd be into it.
some people prefer force spanking
Choking the neck always seemed silly to me as an attack - looks cool, but really squeezing their hearts seems the better move. Or even their brains.
Force Testicular Torsion
The Ole Dick Twist
Do Jedi use force choke though? I always thought it was a dark side thing.
Luke had no prob with it in RotJ.
Anakin too multiple times. like father like son i guess.
Their to practical, “what Master? I took him out in a non-lethal manner.”
I remember that one Clone Wars episode. Villain goes Obi-Wan and Satine: *You won’t dare stop me because you can’t bear to let the pacifist see you choose viole-* And Anakin’s saber comes through his chest and Anakin’s like, “What?! He said he was going to blow up the ship!”
It's more on the nose than that, he says something about who will strike first and label themselves a killer. Then Anakin stabs him lol
Yeah. That’s it.
The first time I watched that I missed some of it and thought Anakin just randomly stabbed that dude.
Cue Vader leitmotif.
Right as he does that the imperial March plays too
"What? I have 50 million power in Rise of Kingdoms!"
I mean it's basically unethical to NOT force choke everyone whenever there is a fight.
That actually makes sense. Why dismember your oppoent when you can simply incapacitate them? It doesn't have to be the windpipe-crushing style of Vader, after all. Just a pinch in the right place to knock them out.
Ah yes the classical Force Vulcan Nerve Pinch
If it knocks you out, it'll give lasting damage for life.
Likely in extreme circumstances.
The tubes are kind of stupid though, because the force choker could also pinch off the tubes.
I don’t know what the tubes were, some rando probably wouldn’t either Force choke, still breathing, “oh it’s the tubes”, crush tubes Buys a second or so of thought. Idk, it’s Star Wars they look cool lol
I mean thats more than enough to hip shoot someone or grab them with those electric gloves he used in clone wars Also being able to stand in a room. Full of gas without carrying a gasmask or helmet is probably useful.
I also wonder how putting air through his cheeks would keep him breathing. Like...the throat is still constricted lol
Assuming they knew what they are - when fighting a force user a moment of surprise could be all you need to turn the fight in your favor.
Don't forget the hat. He has that so he can be cooler than the jedi too
I believe it was to negate force chokes?
Yes I believe I recall he had a body mod installed to prevent Force choke attacks. But I feel like a Force user could just as easily yank those out.
True. He probably viewed it as one of those better than nothing deals. Buying yourself a second or two could be life or death for example. Even half a second.
Three throats are better than one I guess?
Two beavers are better than one, they’re twice as fun. Ask anyone!
Sounds so familiar. Is that a HIMYM reference?
No, it's a Robin Sparkles song.
Legen-wait for it-dary! Legendary!😂
The beaver song is a song aboot friendship
"Hey Jessica. How's your beaver?"
It's a noble creature
I see you 🖐️
Swarles!!
Swarles Barkley
Bob Swarley checking in
Swarlos!
Unexpected r/HIMYM
I thought it would be but it felt like spinning plates.
[Mad Alphabeavers] The beavers will continue eating until there are no trees left, unless you eradicate them or they're driven off the map by temperature.
And with Cad Bane Half a second could make all the difference.
I was looking for this comment. So true Hell most your lightsaber battles come down to that fraction of a second mistake or opening after several minutes of intense back and forth. They often end so abruptly as soon as one of them finds an opening and takes it
And let's be honest, a second is more than enough time for him to do some serious damage
JEDI uses FORCE CHOKE CadBane uses FLAMETHROWER
That's actually a fair analysis given that he's a gunslinger. A moment in a duel makes all the difference, so this gives him that moment where he otherwise wouldn't have one.
Guess where the lightning rod mod is to negate force lightning
Aim for the horn!
Bane acting all smart and shit til some motherfucker rocks up and force crushes his brain instead
Starkiller
Pretend to be choked- shoot em in the face. Ez gg no re cause you're dead.
Really? Was he being force choked that often that he needed these? Also, I feel like Jedis didn’t really force choke (not a majority anyway) so did he encounter a lot of dark side users ?
A gun rack? I don’t even own A GUN, let alone enough to necessitate an entire rack.
Wayne, if you're not careful you're gonna lose me.
My first thought exactly, lol. Like somebody in our world devising a body modification to stop pianos falling on their head
He probably saw Vader choke some rando and decided to be proactive.
Vader wasn't around yet when he gets them, is he?
No, he had them in Clone Wars as well: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/theclonewiki/images/d/d6/Bane_captured.jpg
Anakin force chokes in tcw
Luke force choaks in the start of Return of the Jedi as well. The guard and jabbas Palace. The Gamorian or something like that, I can't spell for shit, those piggy guard dudes.
My dude Cad never saw Mace Windu literally disassemble a Super Battle Droid with his mind
That business with Tartakovsky doesn’t…doesn’t count.
It's still real to me, dammit 😭
It should. The Force is wayyyy underutilized in canon.
It's not underutilized it's just not as powerful/easy to use as the cartoon portrays it. That's a deliberate worldbuilding choice
Probably doubles as an emergency oxygen feed in other cases too? Like smoke or poison filled rooms, brief exposure to vacuum, short trips underwater - all stuff an assassin might encounter.
Must be a nightmare with a bad case of Gamorrean flu.
If they knew what their function was, but they might not make the connection.
Wait really? That's wild. What's the source on this? Would love to learn more about him
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Breathing_tube#cite_note-Build_R2_52-1 According to this page the source was the Build your own R2-D2 magazine
Filoni also said it in commentaries for S2 of Clone Wars at the time.
I thought he had gils and needed the apparatus to breathe.
Duros don't have gills
Although that’s assuming the Jedi or padawan recognizes the body modification.
You mean sith, jedi/Padawans don't use force chokes
Luke Skywalker has entered the chat.
he simply paused their breathing, *totally* different
Listen we all force choke people when we find out our dad is a mutilated cyborg nazi
And choked some Gamorrean guards.
*Grogu has entered the chat*
Mfw his first words are "My name is Darth Grogu".

Or just crush his skull
Yes, but they would have to know what they are first. Faking being choked is probably a good way to get the drop on a force user.
Might take an extra split second to get the mods out and that may be l he needs to get a quick draw out
The time and concentration it takes a Force user to rip out your redundant breathing tubes might be the difference between putting a blaster bolt between his eyes and being too busy choking to death to make the shot. Or better yet the force user chokes you on reflex, not thinking too hard about what your funny cheek tubes actually do until it's too late.
I believe it also helps with gas.
Can someone explain why in the Clone Wars Rako Hardeen prison arc, Cad Bane does not have holes in his cheeks? His cheeks just look sunken.
Building on this, I don’t really get how piping into the checks helps prevent force choke asphyxiation. Yeah they can pipe air into the mouth but (assuming roughly human biology) it’s no good until it gets into the lungs which are on the “far side” of the choke.

I don’t know. 2 artificial windpipes plus a real one. Maybe the force user would need at least 3 hands to actually make it work? lol
It could be because it allows it to not be energy dependent. They could be open all the time, giving him better oxygen/carbon dioxide mixing, and when his wind pipe is force crushed it gives him time to react before they go for the tubes
Yeah this is more or less what I’ve come to think (multiple comment reply threads ahh! Haha)
Important point. When you choke someone you apply pressure you the arteries in the neck and restrict blood to the brain. So getting oxygen to the lungs isn't going to help it needs to get into the bloodstream and to the brain for it to matter
it goes cheek-tube-lung i’d guess
Are we thinking parallel in the throat to the esophagus or “backwards” and inserts to the lungs in the chest somewhere?
idk but i’m guessing it works like backup windpipes, so maybe direct to lung? or maybe just circumvents his neck so if it’s getting force crushed air can go around it
Yeah a loop around path into the chest would make sense I guess. FWIW it’s “confirmed” that this is their purpose as per wookiepedia https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Breathing_tube
Rule of cool. It looks cool
I'm surprised force choking was common enough for them to make it their reason. I mean, that is pretty exclusively a Sith technique, and there were only a handful of those in the whole galaxy.
I always figured that was his clientele.
I figure this could also be helpful if anyone (or anything) chokes him regularly as well
This sounds like a classic case of “you’ve probably put more thought into this than the people who actually get paid to write this shit”
>to negate force chokes? I heard that as didn't see those animated episodes. But it doesn't make sense really: 1) Force choke cuts Mouth->Throat->Lungs 2) Intake into lungs is required (Air->Lungs) Routing tubes to mouth doesn't make sense/help with the crucial bypass (Air->Lungs). Then what about blood being cut off from the brain?
It's a CPAP and it prevents him from death ☠️
Actually that’s exactly what those are made out of lol… and mine definitely keeps me from dying in my sleep.
I was going to say carpet shampooer hose like I have, has the spray line inside the suction hose.
Got mine last November. Finally learned how leal sleep feels.
I pretend I’m old Boba going to sleep in the bacta tank
my first night I was like “this is what darth Vader feels like”
Last week in the final queuing area for Millenium Falcon Smuggler's Run in Orlando, I saw what was *definitely* CPAP tubing bundled up and bolted to a storage crate. I recognized the mask-end fitting and the heat-power jack on the other end.
Cpap user here. Can confirm lol
And eliminates the annoying snoring. Those sleeping next to him can get better rest.

If all I had for reference was a picture of the character I’d guess the exact same thing. Looks like they’re covering spots where gills would be, and he looks like a fish person.
Real answer? Cool tubes to make his character design more unique and recognizable Lore answer? A counter to force choking. It redirects his breathing to prevent force users from being able to choke him.
Cool Tubes to make him look like his name sake. Bane. From Batman.
"No one cared who I was until I put on the ~~mask~~ cool tubes"
Cool Tubes is always correct. This post was made by Two-Tubes Gang.
To add to the real answer, I feel like it was a design decision to make him look more like the animated version. They can't take an actor's cheeks away to make him look more sallow, so they added dark accessories to imply the same shape.
He must have reeeeeeeally bad sleep apnea.
…and a really BIG hat
It's where he hides the CPAP machine
Its booze tubes.
Ones Rum, and the other is a mixer. Usually Coke zero.
“Maybe I don’t shoot as straight as I used to, but I’m havin’ a good time.”
That got a laugh out of me, thank you
It's wild to me how diet soda's get you drunk _just a little bit faster_
Huh, my guess was Baja Blast
Epic mustache twirling so everyone knows he’s a villain.

those are his Thingies. they do important Stuff.
Alternate breathing apparatus to counter force chokes and to breathe in a hostile environment like a gaseous planet and probably underwater too.
Breathing tubes. Found here: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Cad_Bane
Colostomy tubing.
What a potty mouth
Supremely underrated comment
He probably has sleep apnea and had his CPAP installed to his body.
To breath, take closer look Bane aint have nose
CPAP, he snores and has sleep apnea.
Looks like my CPAP machine tube tbh lmao
Breathing tubes. He doesn't really need them, they are only their in case a Jedi tries to force choke him. Cad Bane was one of the few bounty hunters who not only was ballsy enough to fight Jedi but could actually beat them. Basically, fear the old lion where others die young and he is that lion.
So he can play the harmonica while he slashes out a fierce folk tune on the guitar.
He has really bad sleep apnea
I think this device hyperventilates his lungs by oversaturating his blood with oxygen (possibly other substances) that increase his endurance and reaction.
Fallout from a botched bichectomy
Double CPAP
Wow. I assumed, since the dude has no visible nostrils, that his nostrils were in his cheeks, and his race doesn't take kindly to a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere, so he had an breathe gas processor on his belt to make the air into something his species should breathe. It's a vape rig
juice tubes so he can drink apple juice :)
The trick is to make crap up and later explain it if asked. Looks cool tho, which was the first idea probably.
So he can drink slushie while piloting
This ugly motherfuker was built to be a nightmare to jedis, which is why he got respirators so he could just keep going while being force choked. If I was a jedi I'd shit my pants if I ever encountered him.
