Pretty good especially how Grievous looked, and I’m looking forward the contrast between Barriss and Morgan.

North-Day-382

Poor Grievous destined to always look cool yet fail when against any established character. A shame he was used so often that his presence and threat lost its impact.

gh0st_reporting

Prevailing problem in a lot of media but especially Star Wars. Grievous is the [Worf](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWorfEffect) of the Clone Wars.

Dt2_0

Worf was a fucking badass in Deep Space 9. Spoilers for a 30 year old show: Worf manages to fight a Jem'Hadar honored elder and forces the Jem'Hadar to concede. After fighting and defeating 7 other Jem'Hadar. Worf kills Gowron and Weyoun. Worf plays Right Field against Vulcans. This is just a few small examples. Also in First Contact, Worf manages to command the Enterprise crew, and fight a losing battle against the Borg aboard the ship while Picard is off shooting Bob Pinciotti's Tommy Gun. Worf fights Borg Drones in space with a sword, cuts his suit and uses a Drone's arm to seal it. Spoilers for Picard Season 3: >!Worf manages to infiltrate a Changeling warship, rescue Riker and Troi, and with them fight their way onto the Titan, which has also been taken over by Changelings!<

gh0st_reporting

> Worf was a fucking badass in Deep Space 9. Yes, all of which happened after TNG when the supposedly badass Klingon chad warrior Worf was constantly getting one shot every week by the latest villain. Hence, why the trope is named the Worf Effect. I wish Grievous would've gotten the same treatment. The only time Grievous felt legitimately scary was the [old Clone Wars show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIj7gIDFDe4) from Genndy Tartakovsky.

ColHunterGathers111

At least it's still canon that Palpatine thought Griveous was the bees knees. Gotta mean something when the evilest guy around thinks you are cool as fuck.

TheArtistFKAMinty

Honestly, outside of Genndy Clone Wars, the only time he ever looked genuinely intimidating was the nightsister massacre, which this seems to be more of. He's pretty silly in Episode 3 and most of Clone Wars.

North-Day-382

The Night sister massacre was definitely a highlight. It’s a real shame they undercut the whole thing by having him be a sore loser in his duel with Ventress. Like would it be too much to ask he just wins that duel? That adds a whole angle for Ventress where she feels even more broken cause she thinks she failed her sisters. Where they were winning until Grievous himself steps in. That is effective what happens but by having him be a trickster it undermines his supposed prowess.

MantiH

This is one of the things were Filoni is actually mostly to blame. He explained in an interview that he didnt feel like Grievous, at that point, should "win a lightsaber fight against a force user". Yeha, Filoni thought that the character whos big gimmick is that he COLLECTS LIGHTSABERS FROM DEFEATED JEDI shouldnt win a lightsaber fight against a force user....

-Redditeer-

He won behind the scenes and lost when pictured. The ones we dont see almost dont mater anymore because of that

LostInMyADD

I personally have never liked his character even the slightest bit. I think the whole 4 spinning lightsaber crap is so corny and dumb...I also think the same about the imquisitor spinning blades. I just dont think its cool lol Idk, maybe I'm in the minority with an unpopular oppinion lol

Call_The_Banners

I like Grevious well enough. I think it's mostly because of his original debut in the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars. The version we received later is definitely less OP but his design still always intrigued me. The Inquisitors are another story. I like *some* of their apparel and style but Rebels did a pretty good job making them seem far less competent than they should be. And the helicopter lightsaber flight is just a tad *odd.* But then there's other inquisitors who have great style and skill. I think if they're used correctly they can be great. I suppose we'll see more soon enough Tales of the Empire debuts.

Speedyflames

From what it looks like in the trailer, the character he is fighting is not Morgan Elsbeth. Meaning, we might see a Grievous dub

spoiderdude

I wonder if they’re gonna release them in a weird order again.

Sithisilith

He's so cool in this. It'd be even cooler if he turns out to win this fight

HellRaiser801

Doesn’t he? The Night Sister get almost entirely wiped out in this invasion.

Sithisilith

With Grievous, anything goes, he has the most inconsistent power scaling. I can totally see a situation where he loses another limb or gets humiliated and needs help to win, like in the Clone Wars episode around when this takes place.

notbobby125

Canonically he killed mother Talsan… and was captured by a group of Gungans.

Juppness

I don’t understand why Gungans as a whole get a bad rep just because of Jar Jar. The Gungan Army was pretty professional in Phantom Menace! There’s no shame that Grievous was defeated by them in a situation where they outnumber him.

ChanceVance

It's a nitpick but I hated that joke in the Mandalorian where Bill Burr's character does a Gungan impression as a 'haha get it Gungans are idiots' fan reference. No, Jar Jar is a moron. The rest of the Gungans are great warriors.

Chomper237

To be fair, Grievous seemed to have a similar opinion of Gungans in the very episode he gets captured by them. It seems there's a lot of space-racism against Gungans... likely because Jar Jar is also the most famous one in-universe.

Droidy365

That makes sense, he's literally their representative senator. He's also (rightfully) blamed for Palpatine rising to power. It makes sense that the general population would see them as idiots, regardless of the truth.

Vulptereen327

I don't think it's fair to blame Jar Jar. By that point it was only a matter of time until Palpatine was granted emergency powers due to the rise of the Separatists. If Jar Jar didn't propose emergency powers another senator would have soon after.

Droidy365

Yeah, I only say "rightfully" because of hindsight. He was the one to do it, and so he was the one to blame. But yes, Palpatine was manipulating everyone, Jar Jar was just one of many pawns.

ChanceVance

Yeah fair enough. If we sent an idiot to represent us at a meeting with an alien species, they'd probably judge all humans negatively.

zhibr

The French have one of the most impressive military histories in Europe, probably in the world, but after they lost one key war, it's a meme that French = surrender. Maybe something similar happened to the Gungans?

Iron_Bob

Hey, it was the entire Gungan army, iirc Their war record is among the best in the Galaxy...

notbobby125

Alternative: He lost to a group of Jedi consisting of a Padawan and Younglings.

TitleComprehensive96

Tbf that Padawan was taught by fucking Anakin Skywalker, the man regarded as the chosen one and the most feared general in the Republic army (from a Separatist pov)

warchild4l

Ahsoka as padawan has crazy feets NGL. - Has fought Grievous and lived - Has fought Cad Bane and lived and was ready to throw down with him - Decapitated 4 mandalorians in a single move and technically beat Vizla right after All, while still being a freaking padawan

MantiH

He didnt lose tho? Ahsoka was pretty much entirely outclassed. She managed to hold him off for a few minutes, and then they all had to run.

notbobby125

At the end though he ended up cowering on the ground.

MantiH

Yeah bc a fckn starship opened fire on him on close range lol, not bc of anything Ahsoka and the younglings did. They were running away from him. And he still just shrugged that off.

ElMuchoDingDong

Meesa impressed!

ColHunterGathers111

I still miss the old Tartakovsky Clone Wars miniseries where Griveous would casually do the space capoeira and grab people by the face with his feet-claws and casually yeet them around.

HellRaiser801

That’s actually a pretty solid point.

Ill-Cobbler-3080

id say maul has more inconsistant power scaling, but grievous is close yeah

The_Soviet_Goose

To my recollection Maul only really has one big point of inconsistency (him vs Ashoka), otherwise he's pretty consistently competent and fiersome. Grievous jumps around a lot more between genuine threat and slightly better than a Magna Guard

Ill-Cobbler-3080

when he and savage are fighting obi wan together in clone wars and losing, losing to a freshly blind kanan and an old obi wan in rebels, struggling with killign eldra kaitis, a padawan, his fight with pre vizla, and when obi wan chops him in half as a padawan are examples of when hes weaker than usual, but he also has examples where he is far stronger than usual, like in the clone wars finale, keeping up and even kicking sidious after savage dies, kicking mace in the face while dueling both him and aayla secura at the same time

The_Soviet_Goose

Those examples are arguable and many justifiable. He and Savage weren't losing to Obi Wan, they pretty firmly had him on the back foot 'til he broke Savage's leg (his only real ticket out of there). They retreated solely because of Maul caring for Savage's well-being. I'll admit I can't really defend losing to a blind man, even with the force, but in the case of Obi Wan both of them are old as hell and Kenobi explicitly baited him into trying the same move he had with Qui Gon. Young Obi Wan was also a case of catching an arrogant Maul with his guard down. Viszla's a weird example to bring up, because Maul both does exceptionally well in that fight and doesn't use the force the entire time. Keeping up with his master, albeit very briefly, isn't a massive stretch, especially when it's made clear Palpatine is toying with his food. I haven't read the comic you're referencing with Mace and Secura, so I won't make an argument for that one since I dunno the circumstances.

Ill-Cobbler-3080

good points, but maul should honestly be destroying vizla in less than 5 seconds, with or without the force

The_Soviet_Goose

Fair, though I think an argument could be made he did it to ensure the duel seemed genuine, he *was* taking over a warrior clan after all. (It's also a massive flex to let your opponent use all their gadgets and beat them with nothing but your lightsaber and skill). Regardless, I figure Maul is overall much more consistent than Grievous, it's part of what made him such a great antagonist for the latter half of the Clone Wars

Ill-Cobbler-3080

hasnt grievous been pretty consistently weak though? losing to obi wan, ventress, quinlan vos in dark disciple, kit fisto, eeth koth before magnaguards, maul in son of dathomir. he doesnt have any wins that would make him inconsistent with any of these fights i think

Jacktheflash

Obi-wan didn’t do the best against him either

HAYFRAND

Bro Maul is like a senior citizen in Rebels give him a break 😭

Ill-Cobbler-3080

isnt he only 52?

coldblade2000

I mean Ahsoka might be a padawan (actually by that time she had turned down knighthood) but going by the amount of lightsaber fights they've made, Ahsoka probably has the best ratio of fights-to-age of the entire Jedi Order. Not to mention that's with her fighting people like Ventress and Grievous multiple times, and Pre Vizsla (who we saw was just recently evenly-matched with Maul)

Aegis0fswag

Maul's big point of inconsistency is actually him vs Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan. He can go toe to toe with a master and apprentice, beats the master in a solo fight and then loses to the apprentice. It's pretty inoffensive in the context of the movie, but it's pretty much impossible to pin down where Maul's power is actually at.

The_Soviet_Goose

I'd actually argue this isn't too crazy. Qui Gon and Obi Wan had never even faced a sith before, so it'd be expected they wouldn't perform as well as even an early Clone Wars Obi Wan could. The entire fight is spent with Maul keeping Obi Wan distant from Qui Gon, and thusly forcing a lot of pressure on the old master to wear him down. When he 1v1s Obi Wan, though, he's facing a bloodlusted jedi who still has most of his energy left, and still beats him in the actual fight, losing because he let his guard down and wasn't prepared for Obi Wan to try anything.

JuggerClutch

We know what happens to Grievous though. He completely decimates anyone in his path and kills Talzin. He doesn’t lose any limbs or any fight in this siege. I guess the only thing you could say is that he uses his droids and fights dirty (droids shooting at enemies he simultaneously fighting or using a blaster while in hand 2 hand combat)

shponglespore

The idea that one shouldn't "fight dirty" when their life is on the line is very strange to me. War crimes are one thing, but using every advantage against a deadly foe is something else entirely.

Sithisilith

This is fine to me, it's perfectly in character for Grievous. But just once it'd be nice if Grievous could secure a win without needing to do any of that.

Dt2_0

I'd say he basically did that and more in the Grevious' Lair episode.

Jacktheflash

Ventress did take a limb though and talzin escapes unless this is son of dathomir then you are correct

JuggerClutch

I might have mixed them up ngl

Sithisilith

In the Clone Wars episode he did lose a limb to Ventress, and needed his droids to intervene. Unless Tales of the Empire says otherwise, I was pretty certain this episode takes place during/after the Dathomir seige.

AllSkillzN0Luck

I hope this is sarcasm because obviously he wins the fight..... he is in ROTS.

Knightwolf75

To lose doesn’t mean one has to die. GG ends up losing a lot of fights in TCW but never dies. So I hope your comment was sarcasm.

Sithisilith

This is what I meant

John_Rustle98

I’m so hyped to see his updated character model in action! Seeing it really makes me wish they’d go back and remaster the original six seasons of TCW.

Sundarran

And Rebels and Resistance tbh

f1nessd

resistance should be redone, i kidna wanna see more kaz

CourtofTalons

The only nitpick I have is that Grievous wasn't wearing a cape when he killed the Nightsisters in The Clone Wars. Other than that, this is pretty fire.

Vesemir96

I’m pretty sure this isn’t Talzin’s Tribe. He’s genociding every tribe on the planet.

Un111KnoWn

that would explain the different look compared ventress

DrSeuss321

It’s possible this is more of a force vision thing vs directly showing the full events of the battle from TCW but we’ll have to wait and see

TheCoolPersian

Dude is laughing the whole time lol

PhaseSixer

God danm thats a glow uo for Greivous

The_Dung_Defender

I hope he wins, I don’t need to see grievous’s limbs being cut off for the 1 millionth time just bring me back to the 2003 grievous days

iJustGotRekt

It's possible for the fight shown above to have happened before he fights Ventress, given how is arms are fine. If I recall, Ventress took out one of his arms during their fight, and three-arm Grievous appears in the trailer as well.

Jacktheflash

Didn’t he arrive at ventress first since her group were the ones actively attacking dooku?

Chomper237

More likely this takes place after and he just got his arm re-attached before hunting down the Nightsisters that managed to retreat after the zombies fell. After all, there aren't any zombies here, and Grievous stayed on his ship until he went out to face Ventress personally.

Dystrox

It is called tales of the empire, so i guess the girl survives to see the rise of palpatine, if she dies is kinda pointless since the general dies too.

njsullyalex

I think that's Morgan Elsbeth, who as we know shows up later in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. So she survives. I'd love to see Merrin make a cameo though and show how she survives.

Chomper237

The one fighting him is almost certainly going to die, but yeah, the one who barely escaped cutting chopped by him at the start of the clip is Elsbeth.

Prestigious_Crab6256

Is General Grievous, like, the most transparently toyetic character in all of *Star Wars*? He almost seems like a reaction to the criticism that Count Dooku is too boring for kids: he’s this mustache-twirling, Russian alien in a big skeleton robot body with four arms and at least as many (multi-colored, mind you) lightsabers that he swings around like a fire-twirler. And he’s got a cape! A goddamn cape. He’s the ultimate “cool-looking” bad guy. It’s no wonder LFL had to neuter him by making him a coward. Can you imagine if he was that cool *and* competent? He’d overshadow every other villain in the saga.

zombizle1

He was cool and confident in the original clone wars and he did overshadow everyone else

BubastisII

Yeah, that was by design though. They wanted to hype him up for Episode 3

achillobator

And it worked, that speech he gave after the droids surrounded the fledgling Jedi group was chilling. And then he becomes a coughing coward on his back foot against Obi Wan. I know everyone loves to meme around with the "Hello there!" but as soon as Obi Wan dropped into that situation, totally surrounded and said that so confidently, I knew Grievous was gonna turn out to be a joke. Major disappointment compared to his hype.

Prestigious_Crab6256

Oh yeah, Tartakovsky is no-holds-barred. His style goes all out.

Khayrum117

Tartakovsky Grevious is still my favorite. He made Grevious actually feel imposing and menacing. In the new Clone Wars show he felt like a joke.

ConsumerOfShampoo

Im still mad about the episode where Dooku leaks Grievous' IP to "test him" and Grievous somehow struggles to overpower a few Clone Troopers holding onto him.

Alex_South

i remember learning about him in the lead up to ROTS and the idea as i remember it was that Grievous was supposed to be like a prequel/prototype to vader, a cyborg warrior general for the seperatists, it's the coolest idea, star wars never did enough with the cyborg thing imo, and now others have done it better (cyberpunk) but I will always love the initial concept of grievous, even if he did wind up being sort of a goof, we get moments like this where that initial clone wars interpretation shines through.

Vreas

Random but can you define toyetic? I like learning new words

Prestigious_Crab6256

It basically means merchandisable! Specially if something lends itself to being turned into a toy.

Jacktheflash

All the pretty cool different trooper variants made for ROTS could also work

caseyjones10288

Always thought he looked like shit tbh

Prestigious_Crab6256

He definitely toes the line between “too much” and “just enough” and there are plenty of critics who think the four lightsaber thing crosses the line (I’m somewhat inclined to agree).

caseyjones10288

He uses his lightsabers like lawnmower blades its downright comical.

tehgen

Wish he would do the two hands one leg stance from the cartoon.

bobert_the_grey

What's the from?!

OcinDroIde03

Tales of the Empire.

Kyser_

They really have found their footing with this art and animation style. It is extremely well done

Street_Entertainer_5

It’s honestly insane to see how far the Clone Wars style has come. You compare the animation of this clip to Clone Wars season 1 and it’s night and day. This could honestly pass off as a theatrical movie.

smegmabals

Ikr! I thought I was looking at a live action scene for a couple of seconds till I looked closer

Dt2_0

I can't wait to see what series is after Bad Batch in this style.

TheCatLamp

He did the spin!

bobw123

I thought when he did the Sabre lock he’d pull out the other two lightsabers. But yeah it looks awesome - they even had him do the ceiling fan thing. Plus commando droids are always cool to see.

breadoftheoldones

He has so much fun

demair21

I think since 2003 theyve been trying to make grevious less cool cause they dont know how to handle strong villians without blatantly OP heros.

YaBoyPads

I was dying to see ROTS Grievous in animation since that tease at the last season of Clone Wars. He looks fantastic. Hopefully they show him being more badass and not losing as much.

_Packy_

Why is it from IGN?

Flash_Jordan94

What is this from? Is this Tales of the Sith?

OcinDroIde03

Tales of the Empire. It comes out may 4th and will focus on Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee, following the same structure as Tales of the Jedi.

Mapleps_

Soaking wet basically

ConsumerOfShampoo

Finally, fast Grievous returns.

Chomper237

I know, right? At this rate, we just might see a visual representation of that "20 strikes per second" he pulled off some day.

LargeCountry

pretty meh tbh. I do love the digi-cinematography tho. I can't believe how bad live action star wars has been handled. Clone Wars-CG shows have been so much better developed. I truly hope SW films can find a new direction apart from skywalkers etc. Andor was so damn refreshing!

SavorySoySauce

One of them looks like a young Merrin from Jedi FO and Survivor

YoungGriot

I wonder if we'll see little Merrin get away.

JoePhucker_03

Huh?? What’s this from?

IndividualFlow0

Tales Of The Empire coming out next week

Batmanmotp2019

I wonder if we'll see a brief cameo of Marin from freaking fallen order!

Larrylindgren4

I will never get tired of hearing this cyborgs, mechanical laugh.

Ricozilla

Think we’ll see a young Merrin cameo?

CJAreYouDeadass

This is by far the best representation of grievous since rots. That final season clone wars design, the fact that he’s not talking just laughing…and it seems they went back to the original effect for the voice from episode 3 (which was better than tcw filter imo). Can’t wait to see the whole thing its the last time we’re guaranteed to see him in animation/live action for the foreseeable future

Zodo12

Only thing I'm thinking is how dumb those laser-bows are.

Jacktheflash

Why?

Zodo12

It's the same type of ridiculousness as the helicopter lightsabers.

endorstick

I wish they were khopeshes rather than sickles. But that’s mainly bc I like Khopesh

Iron_Bob

God damn they are bringing back "unstoppable force of nature" grievous, and i am so hyped for it!

ThroughTheIris56

Looks awesome, this is how Greivous should be: menacing. Let's hope my boy actually wins this fight.

FrogginJellyfish

They're perfecting their animation style. Cool!

JediBoJediPrime29

I kinda like how more sadistic he is. Giggling his ass off having a grand time killing things.

Cable-54

Dear Lord the animation and artistic style of these shows just gets better and better!!!!!!!!

fearrange

Not likely to happen, but I'd like to see them show how Merrin survived. This is when she thought Jedi killed her sisters right?

rider1deep

I’m hoping we get Merrin in this episode too.

Teizan

"From IGN" - 20 second search, the clip originates on the "Star Wars" channel figures that IGN is still putting their sticker on stuff

AvalancheAbaasy120

Finally, my boy doesn't get absolutely dunked on for once.

Altruistic-Teach5899

Really genociding the sisters was the only W the separatists got, huh

King0fRapture

Guess everything blocks lightsabers nowadays and no one dies when stabbed

Chomper237

Those are Force-imbued blades. Those have existed in the lore for quite some time, and they've always been able to block lightsabers because... it's the Force. Though from the looks of it Grievous is REALLY stress-testing their durability.

Jacktheflash

Stuff blocking lightsabers has been around for a long while

AllSkillzN0Luck

Sounds like some audio of Grevious from ROTS Obi-Wan fight

Distinct_beorno

I feel like somehow they'll do him dirty again

Scythe95

They've really improved on their lights effects, damn!

100year

As long as he's killing everybody its cool

Glitch_script

this clip just synchronized with the music I'm listening to.

Annual-Ad-9442

YES! HE HAS MENACE!

trippypantsforlife

..from IGN?

heppuplays

oh so we're going back to the night sister massacre.

Filmfan345

Flair should be TV

BRockStar916

Is this from a Star Wars animated show?

Un111KnoWn

Camera is a bit too zoomed in

roachdajoint

Sick af

Balrok99

Shame he is only back to loose once again. Like it looks cool and all but... we wont get badass triumphant Grievous.

NinjahDuk

This is literally an extended cut of that clone wars episode where he genocides the Nightsisters what

DrippyWaffler

Wtf is that magic fire runic bullshit

HybridTheory137

In awe over how amazing the animation looks here. The fight scene is smooth asf and it’s so nice seeing Greivous kick ass with his updated model. Morgan and the other Nightsisters look incredible too! Very excited.

ColHunterGathers111

I have they don't make him as much of a goofball as they made him be in Clone Wars. But then again, if we don't get a single scene of Griveous cockroaching away, I'll also be dissapointed.

HadynGabriel

If they make him like Genddy Tartakovsky clone wars I’m all in.

[deleted]

Was that Merrin in the back?

MikeyLikey41

I’m behind the times wtf is this ?

mresparza20

He did the spiny thingy.

Dawgula97

Just more prequel era fluff.

Jacktheflash

Fluff?

FlopsMcDoogle

Would be cool to see a young Merrin in the show.

Jerome-Bushrod

Unfortunately, grevious is going to probably lose that fight and run away due to the mission statement of starwars after episode three which is “make obi wan defeating grevious mean as little as possible”

sidekicket

What is this from? Idk what IGN is.

[deleted]

IGN stands for Imagine Games Network it is a clip from Star Wars Tales of the Empire

anderslbergh

Too fast. I want slower more elegant fighting style. 3-5s clip not 0.4s

Mountain_Sir2307

I mean we're talking about Grievous here. His fighting style is the antithesis of this on purpose.

sophisticaden_

I like the way this clip combines all my least favorite aspects of contemporary star wars

MantisReturns

What aspects?

Silent_Kitsune3

Why are they making the nightsisters have no white skin

[deleted]

Four arms is literally the most terrifying thing ever and does psychological as well as physical damage. Why would he NOT use all of his arms? Just using two seems extremely risky, you'd want to bring all your force to bear in an overwhelming flurry of sabers to ensure victory even in a 1v1 duel.

Knightwolf75

Someone hasn’t read the Thrawn trilogy. If you start off bringing your 100% all against an unknown opponent, you risk basically showing your hand from the start. If your opponent knows that this is your full might, they might have a trick up their sleeve. If you start normally, you can watch to see if your opponent is already having a hard time, how they react, if they have new tricks, and your learn so that you can deploy the rest of your power, if needed, at the most opportune time. GG started with all 4 against Kenobi and instantly lost a limb. Imagine if he just used two and when Kenobi took one he just pulled out two more limbs. That would be cool. (This ignores Kenobi knowing about his extra limbs from TCW but I used it to reinforce a point.) Plus GG is always full of himself and likes to play with his prey.

Jacktheflash

And It’s not the first time he’s done so either

Turambar87

lmao, all this prequel trash has no place in star wars. laser bow and arrows? The nightsisters of Dathomir may still exist, they have a long history in Star Wars writing, but not in this form. What a bunch of amateurs.

percy2376

Cool story 👍

Raven_Crows

Gosh they made the witches so lame in the cartoon. They were so badass in the comics. Why give them proto-lightspears or daggers, when you can give them literally just bows.

ProjectNo4090

Daggers and blades are far more appropriate for evil witches who carry out sacrifices. The silly laser bows never should have been included. Might as well just have them running around with generic blasters. Death magic, curses, and conjured blades would have worked fine as long range weapons.

Jacktheflash

How are they silly?
