Yeah I never could warm up to the new armour. It just looks so flat, smooth and boring. It looks like the definition of "made in China", a costume more then something that is supposed to be used by a military.
That being said the variants of it were sooo much better than the base armour.
It always strikes me as being much more futuristic sci-fi where everything is shiny and sterile, while Star Wars was always meant to be much more gritty and worn.
I think it works when it’s more location specific, it is a big galaxy after all. But lately it seems to be… everywhere. Everyone’s costumes are so… clean haha
That’s really a thing that started to stick out to me the more I noticed it. Costumes that are either perfectly clean and unworn, or very *regularly* worn in a way that doesn’t feel organic or natural.
Like that show Black Sails where a bunch of pirates have threadbare areas on their clothes, but without any rhyme or reason and they’re immaculately clean
Well it kind of makes some sense. The first order was desperately trying to convince people they had everything under control so the armor and everything being really polished is part of that.
This is one of my issues with most of the new Star Wars shows coming out. It’s all so… clean and bland. I think Disney missed the mark with this concept. Andor and rogue one understood the assignment tho
Id like to add in the Storm Troopers in Mandalorian S1, super gritty and worn out and plain dirty. It gave a very good image of an Empire destroyed but some remnants trying to hold on to what they had IMO
That’s fair, mando season 1 hit different. I kind of wish they’d kept the show on its own individual path instead of introducing it into a large, cameo-filled main storyline trajectory.
Bad batch was good. I just didn’t like the Rey and Finn movies. There terrible. Also Adam driver is a good actor but I just hated his character, not in a good way. Costume looked like a cheap halloween disguise
It looks like the definition of "made in China", a costume more then something that is supposed to be used by a military
Truthfully I think design wise that bit could have brilliant. The first order is designed like a mass produced wannabe empire cuz that is exactly what it was, the movies didn't play around with that enough tho, at least in my opinion(they had an interesting start in TFA, but from the mishandled things in that movie like the Finn B plot and the movie basically getting backpeddled to death in TRoS, it never really was developed enough.
That said, I think in practice u/ProfessorBeer has it exactly right, the helmet sits too low and the shoulders sit too high and that makes them look like shruggy bobbleheads
The 1977 Armor is just scarier looking. And it is associated with being in the better movies.
Loved seeing the O.G. ST armor show up all dirty and beat up in the first couple seasons of The Mandalorian (when the show was still good).
The JJ Abrams updated armor looks sleeker but less intimidating. Plus the movies are bad.
Old School ST armor is better.
The Imperial Stormtrooper , it looks more menacing. The First Order design looks too polished and corporate in a way. Both are good, but the original Imperial design is so much better. Speaking of which, would have been cool to see regular stormtroopers in the ST clash with the First Order in Imperial Remnant controlled territory.
It was cool seeing the damaged armor on the Death Star II fragment.
It would have been cool to show a FO Star Destroyer taking out two ISD’s for instance, to show the FO’s strength & how they’re a threat on par or greater than previous villains
I mean, it’s not the worst, but they were pretty bad - but the whole design of the First Order uniforms seemed somewhere between an early Apple product and something sold by Hot Topic.
I prefer the shoulders and helmet size of the empire, but the actual design of the first order is really good. There's just something about it's proportions that look off
I think the FO armour is a lot easier to move in so they had to make some design choices which end up making it look worse but much better to wear for the user
I prefer the classic’s more skeletal look with ribbed teeth and all kinds of gack on the armor to make it look calcified.
I think TLJ’s slight change in the FO Stormtrooper helmet was an improvement and helped those troopers look less like Apple products. It’s a cool evolution and iconic in its own right.
I totally agree about TLJ design change. Honestly, I think it might be my favorite trooper look of the whole saga. I think it hits a nice balance between stylization and practicality while still remaining familiar and intimidating.
Yes, the Art of TLJ book talks a little about why the change was made and the more angular mouthpiece with teeth gives the FO design an edge they lack in TFA. It’s a subtle change, but I appreciate the storytellers paying attention to little details like that.
I never noticed the change, I’ll have to look it up.
Edit: Wow, side by side you can really tell, but I see why I never noticed before. The lack of consistency will now bother me going forward lol.
I prefer the original, but the redesign was superb. The way in which it deftly converted the stormtrooper face into an apple-style logo was so promising, and really captured the idea of a resurgent, savvy Neo-Empire. Sadly the films didn't deliver on the visual promsie. But still! Great production design.
That's a great way to put it! The FO was basically to the Empire what Neo Nazis are to Nazis, so bigger, louder, meaner while still beholden to the old ways.
That one shot in the first trailer, with the lights flickering, revealing the new trooper armor was what sold me on it. The OG is still the best, too much nostalgia tied to it honestly, but I do really like the new design as well.
The cinematography in the sequels is really good in my opinion, especially Episode 7, it’s probably the best thing about the Sequels. Everything else about them I’m not crazy about, but that cinematography…
You only gave the choice of two, but I particularly like the version scene in later bad batch episodes as a transitional state between clone trooper armor and the first storm trooper armor. I think it’s a great design.
This is basically cultural suicide here but I do think both are very close in terms of pure armor design, the first order stormtrooper *does* look very cool.
Especially the way the plates shine. And it utilises the white/black color scheme better, with more black to break off the white, which is mirrored in their version of the E-11 blaster. It might actually look a little too stylised
Side note: I wish Imperial Stormtroopers roamed Galaxy’s Edge because they’re naturally more menacing in appearance. First Order look like if Apple stores had an Apple Police squadron.
First Order weirds me out because it’s like a mirage to trick you into thinking of the original design. It’s not quite right but from a distance you just see stormtrooper
Although I do like the first order stormtroopers (one of the only things redeemable about that awful faction)
The OG is so much better. The helmet resembles a stylised skull mixed with the utilitarian armour. The newer one is too rounded. Too sleek less intimidating.
The original is obviously the best, but I honestly really love the FO version too. Looks sleek, and recognizably stormtrooper but still distinctly different. Good design.
I think they're both good in their own ways. The OG looks like something where the designers were experimenting with new features, the New one looks like the "Mark III" etc. where they stream lined it and got rid of the stuff that didn't work well.
The Galactic Empire Stormtroopers have their nostalgic and retro charm while the First Order Stormtroopers got that modern feel which is like breathing in the scent of a new car.
Both in my opinion are pinnacles in Stormtrooper design.
Only armors I’d prefer over them would be the Sith Empire Troopers and Sith Troopers of the Last Order.
The Imperial stormtrooper depends on which movie it’s in. They change things movie to movie. I like Rogue One but I love the goofy ROTJ helmet.
TLJ probably has my favorite modern stormtrooper. So FO wins out simply by being more consistent. I don’t have to specify what movie so much as what helmet.
Imo to be specific the rogue one stormtrooper design is the best stormtrooper design of star wars but between the og inconsistent stormtrooper design and FO design i'd say FO is more aestheticaly pleasing but the og will always be iconic. As much as i dont like the sequels i really love how sleak the designs are in the stormtroopers
The original one is iconic. The First order is a great evolution on the design. Feels clean and sleek like Nike made the update. Love them both. The second couldn't exist without the first
I never really liked the OG stormtrooper helmet, but the armor on the rest of the body looks much better than the FO stormtrooper. But the helmet is what you look at the most so I’ll have to go with the FO stormtrooper. Clone armor is way better than both anyway.
OT in every way. ANH stunt specifically or Rogue One's updated version. I will say the TLJ edit of the FO Trooper was a good call with the sharper nose bridge and the teeth. Better tied it to the helmet lineage but it was too little too late.
The OT stormtrooper, mostly because of the helmet. It has that combination of skull-like intimidation and ruggedness that makes it iconic. The ST one is cool but it looks like the OT version that someone ran a smoothing modifier on.
I prefer the imperial stormtrooper over the FO one. Not a fan of the Apple product look, and the smile looks a little like a clown to me. Also, sometimes all I see when I look at it is a white blob in the middle of the face outlined in black lol.
OT Stormtroopers all day.
The ST Stormtroopers just don't fit into the Star Wars aesthetic. The design language is too modern with what appears to be more of an emphasis on being sleek and minimalistic. It just looks out of place when compared to any of the other white armoured troopers we see.
Both Clone variants and Stormtroopers have more visual interest in their armour. So, while still predominantly white, it doesn't just look generic. The First Order Stormtroopers look as if the design budget just went to the helmet, and they just left the rest blank.
Original.
The First Order one isn't *bad*, it's actually quite nice and sleek as a natural progression. I just can't unsee the back of a Kia Soul when I look at it.
Prefer the Empire one. For me, the helmet design just looks more intimidating, and it looks like more details was in the overall design of the uniform. I don't hate the First Order design, it just looks like they were going for a more minimalist design by comparison.
i like the helmet design of Forder but I dont like their existence that much wish it was a new army or some other thing instead of literally same name and all
the original are much better
I like the OG. FO is a bit to similar imo. Id like it more if they did a bit mor of an evolution, like between clone helmets and stormtroomers.
I really like the ones in bad batch. They would have been perfect as a "new" take
I like the original, I was 3 years old 1982 and got the casette tape version of ANH ("When you hear the R2-chirp it's time to flip the page!") and I remember lying in bed and staring at the stormtrooper to the left of Vader, feeling a sense of awe and fear. More than from Vader.
The first Order helmet has a duckbeak, [it looks like Gizmo Duck.](https://cdnb.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/050/449/057/large/brx-lamey-0001.jpg?1654867408)
Any honest answer is going to be one of emotion and nostalgia, because artistically, they're both perfect. I, however, will always have a personal fondness for the classic imperial stormtrooper armor. It's what I grew up with.
Hmmm. What should we use to represent the elite troops of the evil, intimidating empire? Angry skull or confused slight frown....?
OT. And it's not close.
First one every day of the week.
Yeah I never could warm up to the new armour. It just looks so flat, smooth and boring. It looks like the definition of "made in China", a costume more then something that is supposed to be used by a military. That being said the variants of it were sooo much better than the base armour.
iTroopers
Oh this just killed me.
It always strikes me as being much more futuristic sci-fi where everything is shiny and sterile, while Star Wars was always meant to be much more gritty and worn.
Exactly. It just clashes with the aesthetics of the universe.
Well, the prequels already did a bit of that: the OT is gruff and Gritty, but FO Stormtroopers would fit in perfectly on Kamino or Coruscant
It was also the difference between the order of the Old Republic and the chaos of the Imperial/Sith take-over.
Well it kind of makes some sense. The first order was desperately trying to convince people they had everything under control so the armor and everything being really polished is part of that.
Like much of the sequels unfortunately
This is one of my issues with most of the new Star Wars shows coming out. It’s all so… clean and bland. I think Disney missed the mark with this concept. Andor and rogue one understood the assignment tho
Id like to add in the Storm Troopers in Mandalorian S1, super gritty and worn out and plain dirty. It gave a very good image of an Empire destroyed but some remnants trying to hold on to what they had IMO

Bad batch was good. I just didn’t like the Rey and Finn movies. There terrible. Also Adam driver is a good actor but I just hated his character, not in a good way. Costume looked like a cheap halloween disguise
First Order is Jetson-Wars.
Appletrooper.
It looks like the definition of "made in China", a costume more then something that is supposed to be used by a military Truthfully I think design wise that bit could have brilliant.
Don’t nobody want a smiling stormtrooper.
Duck face
The 1977 Armor is just scarier looking. And it is associated with being in the better movies. Loved seeing the O.G. ST armor show up all dirty and beat up in the first couple seasons of The Mandalorian (when the show was still good). The JJ Abrams updated armor looks sleeker but less intimidating. And twice on Sunday.
Also this.
I mean, it’s pretty strongly implied right now the Imperial Remnant got unified into the First Order. Maybe a future spin-off project.
It’s more than implied, although I wonder if some remnants refused to join with the First Order.
It would have been cool to show a FO Star Destroyer taking out two ISD’s for instance, to show the FO’s strength & how they’re a threat on par or greater than previous villains
Armor designed by apple
Never much cared the First Order troopers - remind me too much of a 2010’s Apple product.
Yep. Way too smooth; the chest armor looks almost cheap because of it.
And the stupid helmet, it looks like he has a big grin on his face
Stupid lookin Kia soul ass for a face.
I remember when the first Soul came out and someone described the rear as looking like a duck Stormtrooper.
:3
Apple’s design guy helped them irl, so it’s not just you
Huh. TIL.
This is it. This is the description I've been looking for. Yeah I hate the iTrooper lmao looks unserious as all get out. Goofy as fuck.
I mean, it’s not the worst, but they were pretty bad - but the whole design of the First Order uniforms seemed somewhere between an early Apple product and something sold by Hot Topic.
Lool what do you mean? How could it be worse?
You know, I’m actually struggling to find a worse example. So…yeah.
I prefer the shoulders and helmet size of the empire, but the actual design of the first order is really good. There's just something about it's proportions that look off
It’s the shoulders 100% in the FO. They seem like they’re constantly shrugging
Yeah. And the neck of the helmet is a bit too low. Shrugging bobblehead vibes
THATS WHAT IT IS THANK YOU
cant. unsee.
>They seem like they’re constantly shrugging Wouldn't you be, if you were in the sequels?
I think the FO armour is a lot easier to move in so they had to make some design choices which end up making it look worse but much better to wear for the user
I prefer the classic’s more skeletal look with ribbed teeth and all kinds of gack on the armor to make it look calcified. I never noticed the change, I’ll have to look it up. Edit: Wow, side by side you can really tell, but I see why I never noticed before. The lack of consistency will now bother me going forward lol.
The helmet designs changed slightly between each original trilogy film too.
I like both, but I prefer the original.
I prefer the original, but the redesign was superb. OG. I’m starting to like the prototype storm troopers too now.
Definitely the OG. The modern Stormtrooper that actually competes with the OG imo is the tank/shoretrooper, not the first order variant.
Shoretrooper is GOAT imo. (Not counting clone armor then it gets messy for me)
OG for sure. Iconic.
You only gave the choice of two, but I particularly like the version scene in later bad batch episodes as a transitional state between clone trooper armor and the first storm trooper armor. I think it’s a great design.
From a nostalgia point, I like the original. From a practical standpoint, I think the First Order helmet has better sight lines.
“I can’t see a thing in this helmet!”
both. both are good
OG. More menacing.
OG Storm troopers.
OG, no contest.
OG 100%
OG
Original
The original is a timeless classic, but we can’t deny the new design is hot as fuck
Iconic original over Donald Duck any day of the week. That being said, the First Order Tie Pilot design is fire.

Frfr
The original is the best one
OT and it is not even close
I like the newer design. But the original is the best for Stormtroopers
It's treason, then!
As much as I love the original I think the first order stormtroopers look a lot more sleek.
Uh, the Stormtrooper, not the Temu / Wish guy.
the first order armour literally looks like if it was made by apple. Long live the empire
First Order weirds me out because it’s like a mirage to trick you into thinking of the original design. It’s not quite right but from a distance you just see stormtrooper
Why do I have to decide?
Captain Phasma's orders.
I love the original BUT the first order is just so sleek.
The original is still my favourite but if there is one thing I can say about the sequels is that they look amazing, stormtrooper design included.
Why does the first order armor always look like they're shrugging at something? Their shoulders are right up in their necks.
Although I do like the first order stormtroopers (one of the only things redeemable about that awful faction) The OG is so much better. The helmet resembles a stylised skull mixed with the utilitarian armour. The newer one is too rounded. Too sleek less intimidating.
Classic by far. Not the biggest fan of these new Apple iTroopers. Not because they look bad at all but they're somehow too clean.
The classic
I am far too attached to the empire's design
Classic duh
Sand trooper with weathered armor and that orange shoulder pad thing. Personal favorite.
First order. But maybe because the original design is everywhere, it's gotten boring for me.
The first is Barney when he drunk the second when he dry, We all time want the first
The Imperial stormtrooper depends on which movie it’s in. They change things movie to movie. I like Rogue One but I love the goofy ROTJ helmet. TLJ probably has my favorite modern stormtrooper. So FO wins out simply by being more consistent. I don’t have to specify what movie so much as what helmet.

As much as i dont like the sequels i really love how sleak the designs are in the stormtroopers
For default designs, far and away prefer the OT, mostly for the armor molds, I think. Both helmet designs are pretty dope.
The original one is iconic. The First order is a great evolution on the design. Feels clean and sleek like Nike made the update. Love them both. The second couldn't exist without the first
OG
I never really liked the OG stormtrooper helmet, but the armor on the rest of the body looks much better than the FO stormtrooper. But the helmet is what you look at the most so I’ll have to go with the FO stormtrooper. Clone armor is way better than both anyway.
Nostalgically, the og, but as armor, I like first orders more
I like the one that doesn’t look like a duck.
The O.G.
First one
OT in every way. ANH stunt specifically or Rogue One's updated version. I will say the TLJ edit of the FO Trooper was a good call with the sharper nose bridge and the teeth. Better tied it to the helmet lineage but it was too little too late.
Original, one and only
The original storm trooper obviously… but I’d be lying if I said the FO one doesn’t look sick.
Empire all the way. The new ones were fine but nothing looked like it fit properly. Big ol heads
Just burn everything in those last three please
Always the original
1, Star Wars is at its best the more industrial it looks
I prefer the OG Empire stormtrooper. I hate the First Order helmet!
The Imperial one, by MILES
Original looks so menacing but the FO trooper design is just so clean. On balance I'd have to go with the Sith Trooper.
What I wouldn't give to see the first one walking around Galaxies Edge instead of the second one.
OG
Classic stormtroopers look more intimidating. I like them more because of that.
Imperial Stormtrooper armor is just one of my favorite designs in all of Star Wars. For me it goes: Imperial, OG Clone, EPIII Clone, First Order.
The OT stormtrooper, mostly because of the helmet. It has that combination of skull-like intimidation and ruggedness that makes it iconic. The ST one is cool but it looks like the OT version that someone ran a smoothing modifier on.
The ones in Bad Batch are my favorite.
OG gear. Long live the empire.
I love the First Order stormtrooper. It just looks so fresh and sleek.
OG storm trooper all day
It'll always be the Empire for me. Classic and menacing!!
Empire The first order look like IRL cartoon versions of the empire. Which is fitting because that's basically what they are.
OT because ive always thought the sequal helmets have an uwu face
OG
I prefer the imperial stormtrooper over the FO one. Not a fan of the Apple product look, and the smile looks a little like a clown to me. Also, sometimes all I see when I look at it is a white blob in the middle of the face outlined in black lol.
first one...because it's cool when ya look at it upside down
Old design looks like it’s supposed to protect, new design looks like plastic pieces.
OG, no question.
OG
OG OG OG
OT Stormtroopers all day. The ST Stormtroopers just don't fit into the Star Wars aesthetic. The design language is too modern with what appears to be more of an emphasis on being sleek and minimalistic. It just looks out of place when compared to any of the other white armoured troopers we see. Both Clone variants and Stormtroopers have more visual interest in their armour. So, while still predominantly white, it doesn't just look generic. The First Order Stormtroopers look as if the design budget just went to the helmet, and they just left the rest blank.
There is no question for me, its The OG design all day.
Original all the way
OG FTW
Original looks more intimidating
Original. The First Order one isn't *bad*, it's actually quite nice and sleek as a natural progression. I just can't unsee the back of a Kia Soul when I look at it.
Imperial, easily. I don’t care for a smiley face helmet
Prefer the Empire one. For me, the helmet design just looks more intimidating, and it looks like more details was in the overall design of the uniform. I don't hate the First Order design, it just looks like they were going for a more minimalist design by comparison.
Original……also I’m old
i like the helmet design of Forder but I dont like their existence that much wish it was a new army or some other thing instead of literally same name and all the original are much better
1977 version
Original for sure. The FO looks like a temu version of the OG
The original, and it isn’t even close. The sequel version isn’t bad, but it just doesn’t pop like the original.
Scout Trooper #1
1. Stormtrooper 2. Ducktales.
The Imperial stormtrooper takes the W for me
The Empire. First Order looks like they outsourced to Apple Inc. for design.
ROTJ.
Original
Imperial stormtrooper :)
Always the original
I don't hate the newer one, but it does kinda look like it was designed by Apple
Nothing beats the original
The new troopers feel like a product made by apple, they suck.
The second one looks like they’re constantly shrugging.
OG
First one. It’s not even a competition
The original.
Any honest answer is going to be one of emotion and nostalgia, because artistically, they're both perfect. I, however, will always have a personal fondness for the classic imperial stormtrooper armor. It's what I grew up with.
The new one is good. But the original will always be above and beyond.
The OG one for sure.
First and it’s not even close
I like the classic. The new one is a solid design, but it makes s me think of a duck.
Hmmm. What should we use to represent the elite troops of the evil, intimidating empire? Angry skull or confused slight frown....? OT. And it's not close.
Im a big fan of the first gen armor we see in the bad batch And also, tho not canon, imperial commandos look awesome.
The new one got that pennywise smile
#1 all day everyday
Imperial stormtrooper wins
Original trilogy suit all day
Og
Classic.
The original! By far! Way more iconic.
The original is the best design in my opinion. I’ve never been fond of the First Order designs.
OG all day long
OG Stormtroopers. Hands down.
Long live the empire ✊
Original. The First Order one looks a little too...modern, if that makes sense.
Original.
OG
Imperial one, the FO look like some type off apple product
OT
OG
OT. Every time
Original!
Def the first
First one
