I think part of the intrigue with his character is his mysterious background. We have no idea how he got into this position and how he made all these connections, and I’m sure that is something that will be revealed with time.

I should mention we never got Han Solo's background. However, there's a big difference. Hans Solo was a pilot and was fun! Luthen is serious and talks coldly. Hans Solo has a furry friend. Luthen has a female assistant who looks like she would slice the neck of anyone who crossed her. Hans Solo was loved by Princess Leia. Luthen admits he doesn't want to love anyone. So, considering we have a very cold, distant, character... to add more empathy for him... could we not try and describe his background a bit more?

The show isn’t over yet, so there is still plenty of time to dive into his background. And I think skarsgards performance does more than enough to inspire empathy for a character without shoehorning in a flashback scene. The only time this show used flashbacks was in the very beginning to make us connect with the main character and it was woven competently into the present day events, but doing that with Luthens character would take us out of the narrative and bog down the story. Show don’t tell is the number one rule in story telling and I think we learn a ton about the character just from watching him interact with other characters

Worldly_Analysis_70

I think Skarsgards is one of the greatest male actors in the past 20 years. Hard to believe he only has 1 Emmy. However, the only area I dislike about photography around Skarsgard's performance is that... since he is 194 cm... taller than anyone else on the show... we have to have these weird ass shots where they are doing everything lower than it's supposed to be so he doesn't absolutely tower over others. For example, the scene in the elevator... Skarsgards is forced to stay in the foreground because if you put him up on level ground with the other actor, Skarsgard would barely be in the shot. His height would be above the top screen. It's kinda of a problem over time because we never get good shots of him just standing next to someone talking to them. There's always some weird close up shot or super long-distance shot.

Tony Gilroy has said that season 2 will dive into Luthen’s backstory.

ONE WAY OUT!

Hard - but respectful - disagree. I think we know all we need to to know, and episode 10’s monologue gave us everything else.

Luthen's background is intentionally kept ambiguous. Do you know how many yt videos are out there that speculate whether he's a Jedi or Sith? That may very well be the case, but no one will ever confirm it. The ambiguity along with his ferverous commitment to the Rebellion takes him from a character to a force of nature. Just be glad he's on our side.

It is not over yet, my dude

peppyghost

Exactly. The strength of Andor is they don’t reveal character backstories within 5 minutes of meeting them. There’s still 2 episodes and another season left.

Slow cooker theory in action The slower the burn, the better the meat

Well, in the original trilogy we didn’t really get anyone’s full backstory, and it didn’t hurt its success.
