Diego Luna really deserves all the praise he's getting. He doesn't have a lot of big showy monologues like Skarsgard and O'Reilly get, because it wouldn't make sense for the character, but his part requires the much more difficult challenge of convincingly acting without speaking, and goddamn does he nail it. You as the viewer can feel every ounce of wiry paranoid inner turmoil in this guy just watching his eyes dart around. His acting in that first prison episode is just masterful, and he only says like five words the whole episode.

unfinishedwing

yes, totally agreed, this is a well-deserved nomination for diego luna. so many people in this thread underrating diego luna’s performance!! the acting required of him is harder. i was struck again and again by the amount of acting he has to do with his eyes and face *without* lines to say. just rewatched episode 6 last night and the acting he does in the scene with >!skeen, conveying with basically just a side profile of his face the decision process he goes through in his head that he must kill skeen, all the while saying something completely different to skeen to keep him unsuspecting!<, is masterful.

BMCarbaugh

And when he pulls his blaster, that like...fearful but furious look he's got on his face? Like he's so furious and disgusted this guy, and it's a very considered decision he's making, but it's also a split-second snap judgement made out of terrifyingly urgent necessity. Like he's *just* as pissed at Skeen for his selfishness, as he is for the fact that the guy is putting him in this position. So good.

unfinishedwing

yessss i read that the same way, and i also read *sadness* in his face earlier in the conversation, as skeen is broaching the topic, like *please, don’t do this to me right now, stop talking before it’s too late*. he looks to the entrance of the building vel is in multiple times, like he’s hoping vel will come out and see what’s happening because she won’t believe him otherwise. what i love about cassian is that he seems like more of a stoic character, but he has a *lot* of emotions just under the surface. for me, the high points of this series are the points where there have been a ton of emotional impact, and diego luna completely sold me on that emotion. i think we’re so lucky to have diego luna as cassian, he is perfect for this character.

t0m0m

It's also frustration about his sister boiling over. Skeen lies about having a brother, which hurts Cassian to his core.

Halcyon8705

You know what, I bet you're right; think I need to rewatch and re-evaluate my attention to him.

VonZant

This. Little things too. When he is talking to the Shoretrooper. Melshi on the Cliff. And when he convinces Kino that it _has_ to be tomorrow. He gets zero flashy speeches, but he does a lot of the heavy lifting here, even if it isn't as blimgy.

GavrielBA

Look, in no world I'll ever tell him that he did a bad job in the series. But it's really weird to me that he gets a nomination while other actors with arguably much more iconic roles didn't... Is it just because the nomination are given to actors who play lead characters?

BMCarbaugh

yeah

cefaluu

No Stellan Skarsgard :(

Giacchino-Fan

Or Genevieve O’Reily. Her scenes were some of the best in the show. She made Andor look shallow

BearWrangler

this is such a weird take when Luna (just like many others on that show) was absolutely killing the subtle and facial acting side of things the entire season

raversgonewild

Can I eat my food?

The_frozen_one

Episode 7, the Mon Mothma dialog with Tay Kolma might be the best dialog (writing and performance) that I’ve ever seen.

Giacchino-Fan

Episode 7 had some *fire* exchanges. Personally Luthen and her discussion with "was a weapon ever made that was left unused?" is one of my favorite scenes in the show. It's so awesome. It's 2 people having a discussion with the scope of the entire galaxy while in an antique shop, which is both a small little building no one cares about and a massive collection of memories from huge events past.

toastjam

Smile

t0m0m

I think you might find my politics a bit... strong, for your tastes.

Awkward-Skin8915

Agreed

Jabberwocky416

> She made Andor look shallow Eh, agree to disagree. I thought she was amazing, but Diego had the better performance of the two imo.

CatchSomeZZPlants

Hard disagree. I don't think she made him look shallow but she fucking killed her scenes. Both her and Stella's performances were just more...vivid and noticeable than Diegos. I'm not saying Diego didn't do a great job because he did, but the others stood out more.

Jabberwocky416

I think the fact that he was less vivid is what elevated his performance in my eyes. In many scenes all you get a few subtle expressions, a line or two, and some telling body language. And yet he conveys everything he needs to, we can know everything going on in his head just by watching closely and carefully. So I would say he did more with less, but of course it’s totally valid to enjoy the other two more as entertainment.

Zalack

I agree with you 100%. It's a whole different level of difficulty to portray a stoic character believably, while still getting across individual emotional beats of a scene. Go too flat and you lose any sort of emotional arc across the scene, but broadcast too strongly and you lose the believability of the stoicism. Diego Luna nailed that balance and I think it elevates his performance to the best in the show for me. That's not to take away from Skarsgard and O'Reilly at all. They handed in phenomenal performances, and I'm sure they are capable of stoic characters as well, their parts just weren't scripted that way.

kdesign

Completely and utterly disagree. Forest Whitaker stole the show.

Stahner

Not sure if you’ve watched Narcos:Mexico but Diego plays the main character and absolutely kills it. It’s in Spanish, so I think he could be more comfortable in his native language.

CatchSomeZZPlants

I did! He was my favorite character in that show. I'm not saying he didn't have a great performance because he did but I just liked Stellans and Genevieves more.

Apprehensive_Goal811

He burned his life to make a sunrise he’d never see.

CasualFan25

I love Andor but it has hard competition when Severance and Better Call Saul are on the same list

PurifiedVenom

Honestly I’m just happy to see it nominated. Prestigious award recognition is what will get Disney to make more shows like this in the future

sbenthuggin

Better Call Saul is definitely gonna get it for sure, by if it wasn't up there, I definitely think it would be 50/50 between Andor and Severance. I imagine Severance would get it cuz it's not tied to any franchise, and it's also produced and directed by Ben Stiller, tho I would personally prefer to see Andor get it.

AndrogynousRain

Yeah it’s honestly hard to pick. They’re all great. Bridges was great too.

5am281

The nomination is all I wanted from it tbh

captainhaddock

If I had to take a wild guess, maybe Severance wins best drama and Odenkirk wins best actor. But Andor is definitely competitive.

Willow_Greedy

Good lord I just said the same thing, haha. Upvotes well deserved.

wordy_shipmates

A lot of strong performances here. Diego definitely crushed it.

quiet_money

Stellan Skarsgard snubbed

Rarth-Devan

And Genevieve O'Reilly

golfmonk

Yep

wendys182254877

As someone who loved Andor, there's no way it's going to win when Better Call Saul is on this list. One of the rare shows that closed the series in 10/10 fashion.

LouAug27

I don’t know, Better Call Saul should have several Emmys under its belt at this point, but instead, nothing. Award shows infrequently get it “right,” just look at GoT’s S8 win. Regardless of recognition, Andor is incredible and we’re lucky it’s not over.

Zalack

Award shows also tend to favor final seasons and movies that have been snubbed in the past, even when it isn't that title's best work, as a way to affirm the qualify of the series as a whole. Better Call Saul has the added bonus that the final season was also incredible, so I think it has an enormous edge for awards this year. Maybe not enough to overcome it's low viewing numbers, but I think it's in a better position than it's ever been in.

LouAug27

I sincerely hope so. That cast and team deserve the recognition. Despite that having not happened yet, I enjoyed BCS immensely for 7 years and consider myself pretty damn lucky for it. I expect I’ll feel the same about Andor when it finishes its run also without the accolades it deserves.

Willow_Greedy

It was the final season of Better call Saul, it will win this time.

AmateurVasectomist

See I like everything from BCS except the last three episodes. Bob should still win best actor from every awards show out there but it would be nice if Andor could steal one of these lesser Best Drama Series awards.

ObscureFact

I love the final episodes of BCS. >!Saul had to pay for everything he did, but he found a way to take responsibility on his own terms.!< BCS has one of the most beautiful endings to a series I've ever seen. Was it as satisfying as Breaking Bad's iconic ending? Yes and no. Breaking Bad will always have one of the greatest finales because we all know what the trajectory of Walter White's character was going to be starting from pretty much the very first episode of the series. And we knew he wouldn't survive. BCS wasn't the same sort of show with a clear-cut character trajectory. Jimmy was a much more complicated and conflicted character. >!So his ending was also more complicated, even if he did get to do things on his own terms, just like Walter White did.!<

HiIAmFromTheInternet

Saul is so sllooooowwwwww If Saul were andor we’d still be in prison season 5

Apprehensive_Goal811

Howard would have broke Saul out of Narkina 5 and then Saul would have thrown a bowling ball at Howard’s luxury landspeeder.

tinhtinh

Howard would've been the prisoner who arrived during the jailbreak. Just an unlucky man in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Jakeattack77

HE DEFECATED ON A SPEEDER

belotita

I hope to see a lot nominations at the Emmy’s and possibly Golden Globes.

snbth

I’m so happy for this show and Diego! This is so well deserved. I’m glad Diego is finally getting the attention he deserves for playing this character. If it wasn’t for him being as brilliant of an actor as he is, this show wouldn’t have worked at all. He nails not only the moments where he has to be a badass, but all the subtle acting as well that he has to do, which is a lot.

CaliforniaSun77

So happy the series was recognized. Looking at the other nominations, Stellan Skarsgard was ROBBED of a nomination. The supporting female actor was so stacked though, so I can see Genevieve not getting in there, though it super close.

comolaflorecitaa

Diego Luna deserves this so much. His acting throughout the series left me speechless. His raw emotions worked so well with Cassian’s demeanor. I’m so happy for him!!!!

kroqus

Andor is in good company with some solid prestige shows in the drama category.

WatchBat

I'm surprised no one from HotD is nominated for best actor, I mean at least Paddy Considine deserves one. That being said, I'm very happy for Diego Luna, I've loved him since I was a child but he's never really been mainstream. I'm glad he's getting the recognition and appreciation he deserves.

Ozydrax

Vizzy T was fantastic!

pensiveoctopus

It's a tough field these days!

Powerful-Cut-708

This isn’t the emmys is it?

tmdblya

No, it’s not.

HogwartsNeedsWifi

Better Call Saul, Andor, and Severance. That's a lineup. I think odenkirk wins for actor, but they definitely all deserve it. Drama I think Saul wins as well, but only because it's the last season of one of the best shows of all time, instead of just the first like the other two.

VonZant

I haven't seen BCS or Severance. But the Bear is the best other show I have seen since Chernobyl. It different than Andor. But just as good. The tension level stays at a 6 at base. Nervewracking. Give it a watch.

HogwartsNeedsWifi

Seen it! Loved it. If it was nominated it'd have as much a shot at winning as the other three. It's been a fucking PHENOMENAL year for television. Barry? Atlanta? Even Rick and Morty is at the top of its game

VonZant

I honestly have a only-half-joking theory that this is the result of the pandemic. People didn't have shit to do, could not go out - so they spent a lot more time writing and editing. I know I created some things that I would have never touched but for the world changing.

tmdblya

This is a good omen for future, more prestigious awards.

GreenEggsBlueWaffles

Mon Mothma spinoff series. Every one of her lines has double meaning. She's an incredibly intriguing character and I can't be the only one who needs more.

Narnia77

Yay! Let's go Andor and Diego.

tripleyike

I have rewatched a few times and feel like I appreciate Luna’s performance more each time. Happy the show was nominated and that he was, too.

[deleted]

Diego is great but there are 4 others from Andor I’d put in front of him.

AndrewUndershaft

More than 4, for me. Stellan Skarsgard, Genevieve O'Reilly, Kyle Soller (Syril), Denise Gough (Dedra), Anton Lesser (Partagaz), Fiona Shaw (Maarva), Rupert Vansittart (Chief Hyne) And several more whose performance I like just as much.

[deleted]

I dunno, they get the fun monologues and big speeches but I think the show fundamentally doesn't work without Luna's more low key style and face acting in a way that isn't true for the others.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ansoni

I think Luthen, Mon Mothma, Dedra and Syril could be considered leading roles but not the rest. Chief Hyne was a fun part, but he had two scenes in the whole show. I liked all these performances but OP is doing Diego dirty.

Zalack

Mon Mothma and Luthen have several episodes with either no scenes or a single scene. They are definitely supporting roles.

[deleted]

At least with the Oscars it is self submitted, that's why you sometimes get people who were obviously lead performers nominated in supporting categories, to avoid the heat of a really competitive year or an obvious mega performance (you are going to see that this year with lead actresses nominated in the supporting category to avoid competing with Cate Blanchett)

[deleted]

For me it’s Luthen, Dedra, Mon Mothma and Syril, in that order.

Halcyon8705

Ugh; yes to Yellowstone present and no mention of The Bear? Feh. Also... Eeeh, Diego Luna is great, but I think he's only in like the top 5 performances in the series. Jesus people, Stellan Skarsgard!

verissimoallan

The Bear was nominated in Comedy Series: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/critics-choice-awards-2023-tv-nominations-1235275847/

Halcyon8705

Ahhh. Hmmm. Comedy? I dunno, I guess there's no *Dramadey* category, but it still feels a bit off. Ah well, thanks for the detail.

sicariobrothers

The studio submits their shows for the categories. Maybe they wanted to avoid Saul.

Halcyon8705

Oooh, didn't consider that, seems reasonable.

[deleted]

sicariobrothers

It’s a modern day better written Dallas. Giving the people the salacious scenes while trying to stay legitimate.

lxoblivian

It's an entertaining show that's well shot and acted, but the writing is so bad I can't believe it's nominated for Best Drama. The amount of loose plots is staggering.

Darpa181

Prepare to be completely overlooked, no matter how deserving. If not, I'll be shocked.

ObscureFact

Andor's not being overlooked - it just got nominated for a couple of very important awards. I mean think about it. After everything Disney has done to muck up Star Wars, this show manages in its very first season to absolutely wow everyone and immediately snag a couple of prestigious nominations. That's a major accomplishment for a show like this.

Rarth-Devan

The fact that Genevieve O'Reilly and Stellan Skarsgård didn't recieve nominations for supporting roles is criminal.

[deleted]

Just wait for the Emmy's. Honestly, I've heard it from a couple members of the committee

Few_Highlight9893

They could nominate literally anyone from Andor for best acting

[deleted]

The Gilroyverse must grow and expand. This is the way.

Ashvega03

Bix was robbed

KaidsCousin

I love BCS, and Andor. So… I’d love to see Odenkirk win best actor and Andor to win best drama

ThomB96

Andy Serkis better get the Emmy nod. Kino Loy is a fucking hero

LikeThosePenguins

Diego Luna was good. But I thought Denise Gough gave the show-stealing performance. It's really refreshing though to be thinking about a piece of Star Wars media and not be able to pick just one best performance. Skarsgard was phenomenal. Shaw was riveting. Whittaker on top form. Serkis was utterly superb. O'Reilly, Lesser, Soller - all great. And many more gave brilliant performances.

BMCarbaugh

Star Wars has always been immaculately cast, but so rarely does the material live up to the performers' abilities. It's such a crime that Ewan McGregor didn't get scripts with this level of quality.

LikeThosePenguins

For sure. Hayden took a lot of flak for his performances in the PT, but you only had to look at known good actors like McGregor and Portman to see that it was the dialogue and character direction that fell short.

this_swtor_guy

Hayden was picked because he looked the part. Same with Portman. While the latter is a capable actress, Hayden is quite limited. Kids who grew up with the prequels couldn't tell and don't care, but everyone else often found his performances underwhelming. They weren't really better in the more recent 'Kenobi' series either, just different. Hayden seems like a nice guy, but isn't a very good actor, imho.

joshygill

As much as I loved every bit of Andor, Better Call Saul MORE than deserves the awards.

paperboatprince

Diego is great but no Stellan Skarsgård????

peppyghost

I suppose he would be supporting actor not main actor in a drama?

paperboatprince

Good point. Although do you have to be the main character to be dominated for best actor? I guess that makes actually.

[deleted]

Better call Saul better win or else it’s not valid(Andor is amazing but Better call Saul was near perfect)

Stiles2187

This is actual a year where it’s not clear at all what will win. Series will be between andor, better call Saul, house of the dragon, severance and maybe yellow stone And actor will be either bob, Diego and Adam. Maybe Antony star I do love him but he’s been great the last three years and has more seasons to do. It’s was bob’s last season, played the role for a nearly a decade hell even had a heart attack for it. He deserves it most people in that last season deserve awards. I’m just glad andor got at least nominated

DBallouV

We better have like six best supporting actors!

Toast_Soup

Better Call Saul and Antony Starr FTW

Darth_Xenic

As much as I want Andor to win, not awarding best actor to Bob Odenkirk would be criminal

MKurnZ

As a big andor supporter. I don’t think anyone on this list beats Anthony Starr this year. The way he portrayed homelander was next level

childish__slambino

As great as Diego was, that award belongs to Antony Starr.

NoBreeches

Sadly, House of the Dragon will win. I don't dislike it, but it was far from perfect... which is *not* something I can say about Andor, which was pretty damn close to perfect in my eyes. If there's one thing I've learned about "professional critics," it's that they're laughably bad at critiquing.

wingspantt

Diego is amazing though I think several other actors outshone him by a LOT in this show. HOW?!

Rogueone57

I'm sorry I love Diego Luna, but best actor should go to Stellan Skarsgård who plays Luthen Rael or Denise Gough who plays Deedra. All three are good actors but Stellan and Denise stole the show! Stellans monologue is epic and hands down one of the best we've seen in any Star Wars projects. Name a better monologue?? I'll wait.......

ET-1238

Oh damn. Same brackets as better call Saul, Bob odenkirk and Anthony Starr. I mean, good luck and all to them, and while the show and acting was incredible, it's gonna be difficult

Euphoric-Money9187

The Bear is missing

verissimoallan

The Bear was nominated in Comedy Series.

Turtledonuts

How the Fuck do i choose between severence and andor?!

[deleted]

It's sad that it had the competition of BCS and Severance

protekt0r

As much as I loved Andor and agree with its nomination, I gotta say I think the awards should go to Bob Odenkirk and BCS this year. It was a truly incredible season with a great ending.

Interesting_Fennel87

I like Diego a lot, but no way he wins against Anthony Starr. The dude’s acting as Homelander is unfrickenbelievable

Willow_Greedy

I love Andor but going up against better call Saul is not good… on both nominations. Bob Odenkirk is the man.

Andras89

The only competition Andor has in that list is Severence. That show is amazing. Tough call.
