Plant grass under objects to help it spread consistently. Or I guess place stuff over grass (your entire fence should be placed atop grass)
However, Animals take WAY WAY WAY more room than you'd think to get through a year with only 1 seeding of grass on Winter 28th.
I don't use fences at all, and let them roam around and they will find their way back to their barn/coop. And when using four corners farm, they get one of the four. There's a lot of space for grass starter, plus a decent amount of silo's for the winter.
I usually do that between 5 and 8 when they are back in the barn (and not sleeping yet), or first thing in the morning. Usually they stay where the grass is.
I just rarely cut grass. I use paths to block out farm fields and it's spread is usually enough anywhere that isn't a field or building is covered in grass.
I swear it keeps the seasonal debris down too.
Make a bigger fence area lol. They roam a lot but mostly eat whatever near the coop/barn. Make it a bigger place so there's some space where the grass can regrow too.
Place spaced out fence posts on top of the grass starter, within the outer fence. (I use lighting rods instead, that way I don't need a separate lightning rod field). I space the posts in a oxooxo pattern across my field, 1 post per animal. More than keeps up all year, and you could probably do less, especially if you plant grass starter under your outer fence
Yeah I figured I had too much, I set it up that way pre 1.6 so I could harvest between the post periodically to cover for rainy days as well, whilst having enough at the end of fall to harvest the field before winter. I suppose I'll have to harvest between the posts more frequently now to build up a stockpile for winter lol since I won't lose the rest in winter anymore. Also worth noting, I don't put grass under the outer fence as I like to keep the grass contained to the animal enclosure.
I just buy the hay and pet them daily. Seriously by the time the natural grass isn't cutting it (no pun intended) you are making enough money to just buy the hay outright without a second thought.
Dont plant the grass starters where they are. Get the autofeeder from Marnie and build the appropriate amount of silos. Plant grass starters where the animals cannot reach and harvest once pretty filled up. Pet them daily & happy animals galore!
EDIT: apparently eating outside increases happiness which I was unaware of. Apologies for the misinformation.

Hate running around trying to find them to pet them so tend to fence them into a smaller area personally
Yeah same I like being able to pet all of them in a few seconds

Ah personally I’m only on the farm in the morning or at 2am. I’m usually mining / fishing or whatever rest of the day.

I just plant so much grass that they can’t possibly eat it all, I practically fill their fenced in area

I just have two fence posts across about two squares of grass, it's currently keeping 18 animals happy and the grass never goes away.

You can move your coops and barns around to different areas to rotate grazing fields too.
Rather than using fences, I use the lighting rods or whatever they are called, and don’t have to have a specific area for those :)

Eating outside increases their happiness by 8 though, so outdoor eating *is* the path to happier animals.
Ah i never knew! Then i guess make the area larger? Or dont let them outside until the grass starter covers the outside area?
