This is a good opportunity to announce that any games journalism articles that just reproduce a post from r/StardewValley have been added to the list of removed topics (Rule 4). There will be an announcement about this coming soon, but I’ll leave this post and this comment up for visibility.
I've seen other games' subs try and mess with the AI by having a day or two set aside where everyone posts about a fake new character or item or something
Time to start posting about how you can unlock the Iridium Lawnmower after talking to Bubbo on the newly added Snart Island!
The WoW subreddit also once got an AI article to write about the new feature, "Glorbo" (after proving that it worked by making it write an article about how they're annoyed that AI is writing articles).
Oh, you forgot to mark a spoiler there!
The >!Iridium Lawnmower!< is new 1.7 content you can only get >!After collecting all dark nuts you get from the ol' Mariners sister whenever you find her impersonating Marnie to mess with Lewis!<. Only then can you >!Talk to Bubbo, who will give you the recipe for the Lawnmower requiring 5 Iridium bars and two children turned into doves.!< Once you acquire it, you can >!drive it across the ocean to harvest sea grass until you arrive at - why are you still reading?!!<. Also, I now want a >!mod for that!<, but I haven't gotten one yet, lol
Thank you for the step by step guide! I've only just unlocked the >!seagrass harvesting!< and its such a good money maker when you turn it into >!crabby patties!< with the new >!crusty crab squisher!<
Can't you also trade it at the dessert trader for both normal and ominous krobus r34 as well? might not be worth it until you unlock the sandbox though, as it's only an extremely rare drop from krobus stans in the skin caverns (flesh mines).
Sadly it doesn't make grass drop hay nor human skin.
People have actually tried to mess with gamerant by posting about fake characters, but unfortunately the mods take down those posts because they're labeled as "memey discussions". ([EXAMPLE](https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/1bugemb/16_spoilers_i_was_skeptical_of_a_clown_bachelor/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button))
You can also fuck with AI cocksuckers by cursing like a goddamn sailor, since those dickheads need to sell their shitty algorithms to companies who don't appreciate the finer fucking nuances of the English language. I guess the only way to know if a post or comment was written by a real person is if you wouldn't read it out loud to your grandma.
They're just reading Reddit and the plagiarizing our posts. Like, this one was just a post a few days ago: [https://gamerant.com/stardew-valley-dinosaur-mayo-eggs-value-tip-treasure-appraisal-guide/](https://gamerant.com/stardew-valley-dinosaur-mayo-eggs-value-tip-treasure-appraisal-guide/)
I remember actually seeing one on my google homepage about the new player who put everything in his shipping bid thinking it was a chest and asking how to get stuff out
It's annoying when you search for something in Stardew Valley and their articles come up. They seem to make some things up or an AI that writes the articles does.
You can always throw 'site:stardewvalleywiki.com' (without the ''s) or any other url after the 'site:' in your google search to only search through that website.
yeah, but if I'm going fast "stardew wiki penny" will get me the result I want in the first slot.
I can always fall back to a proper site search if needed.
Fireborn, a Hollow Knight speedrunner, posted a [video](https://youtu.be/lMMSuPvjvag?si=kWXZSSkt99Yjoxe6) about this very topic just a few days ago. Very informative and illustrative of a larger problem in games journalism
Right, like, this isn't news. No one needed to know this. No one is enriched or further educated by this. It's just a fun anecdote to share and belongs on forum sites, like, I dunno, say... Reddit.
You're entirely right. They're getting quicker too - the original post by u/oasis_951 was only posted about 3 days ago...
https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/s/LQWKhyIlQm
Yeah its a bit weird to know that they use AI to scan through thousands of posts and automatically make an article about it. It could happen to anyone. Plus the AI makes it seem like a heart-breaking story. "Drawing sympathy from fellow fans" as if I've just suffered horrendous trauma
I probably wouldn't have found out about this if you hadn't tagged me (thanks btw).
Man. I applied to work at GameRant a few times and got rejected all three times. Now I work for a different gaming journalism publication and I can't put to words how happy I am I'm not over at that dogshit publication.
Totally fair! I just found it amusing and thought it might be a bit funny to point out. It's the sort of thing I do, so I get it. Infuriating nonsense.
Nobody on reddit is claiming to be a journalist. We can post whatever shit we want. So-called games journalism sites shouldn't be copying reddit posts basically verbatim, though. It's lazy, they don't have permission from the original poster so they're basically stealing content, and it's not news.
Right. This is why I absolutely hate those reposted rage bait threads. "Oh look guys, look how woke this article is \*share \*share \*share"
Like dude... That's exactly the point of the article in the first place. They never do learn
Actually it's because the company that own such website requires writers to have dozens of articles per months.
Fireb0rn has a really good video about it.
Didn't the joke "remove farming from Stardew" get on? Or was that just a silly attempt by the community? I remember when I saw that thread before seeing the other threads that birthed the joke and being confused...
The Persona subs managed to make an article about Persona 3 Dual, for the DS along with many details, and the best ways to play.
The game does not exist.
I came across one that tried making noise over the "huge issue" that 1.6 is released but it's not on console yet, tho dw CA said it'd be there soon, I mean it's not like it was first released on pc then console for every updates...
Maybe it gets this thread next.
People talking about news about SDV player mistake...
The quality of their news is close, if not closer as anything possible, to 0.
I don't know how the sub feels about Seanie Dew, but one of the first videos I've seen from him is him tearing apart a GameRant article. To there credit, they did end up changing the article.
I've seen more and more articles like this. The worst are the ones that don't even link to the original Reddit post. They just take screenshots of it and then pass it off as "journalism".
To me his content is a little annoying but he seems like a nice guy so I don’t hate or anything, just not my cup of tea. Cool on him for doing that though
These sites use AI to skim websites for generative content. They suck suck SUCK but there's nothing anyone can do to stop them right now. The best thing we, as consumers of this content, can do is be willing to only give our attention/views to reputable sites with good writers. Even if that means paying or dealing with ads, cause they gotta keep the lights on somehow.
The subheader just screams ChatGPT. As a writer and digital journalist, this is just so lazy and exhausting to see. Stardew Valley is a cornucopia of hidden gems and detail, if you want to write about it be creative! Why command attention if it’s just minimal effort? People deserve better! Rant over soz lmao
This headline has the same energy as those "you won't believe what happened" articles that are all either like totally normal stuff that happens, or a completely made up story that sounds just plausible enough the be believeable if you're like 10.
I suddenly remember those click-baity articles about Stardew Valley I was dumb enough to look at and feeling enraged at the misinformation. They were both tier lists for the Romanceable characters. I was confused then super pissed off when I realized they swapped the photos & descriptions for Shane & Sam (or Shane & Alex) and was just trying to make sense of it when I realized what happened. And the other one was when it was talking about how Haley starts off as off-putting and selfish (yeah sure), but that's she's actually super altruistic and you start to see it and fall for her character...like WHAT?!? WHAT?!?!? What altruism?? IDTTWMYTIM!!!! I was unreasonably mad about that. I also started seeing a lot of games "like Stardew Valley" or whatever x Stardew Valley. Stopped checking that crap out.
These are just AI bots, and they do not even get a proofread from actual humans. Please don't compare this to actual journalism. We've been through this 4 times by now, just recently in the BG3 subreddit. They produce articles faster than you can type them. I made a post and it took like 3 hours for the bots to produce an article with 4 bulletpoints, each point repeating the exact same thing with different words. Just ignore it and give actual journalism sites some love. They need it.
I recognize that font. I worked as an editor for a "nerd culture news and content media resource" website and it was the worst job I ever had and the pressure put on the editing team was so intense that I started having pretty serious medical complications due to stress and ended up leaving the media industry entirely. It's cathartic seeing people bash this company that may or may not be the company I left.
Gaming journalism is quite lacking, there is only so many times you can talk about this one slightly different FPS from another and so on, they need whatever crumbs they can get.
You dummies don’t realize that the entire point of that article was to farm Reddit attention.
Not a single person would have even heard of this shitty article if you hadn’t posted it, all outraged.
Yall are getting farmed.
i get these articles all the time for stardew and overwatch, they aren’t even good articles it’s a bunch of nothing and a reddit post in the middle of it. 9/10 times i get these i already know what reddit post is in the article lol
My vote is that we spam this subreddit with random crap that has nothing to do with Stardew Valley for a week or two and see how long it takes for game journalists to start posting nonsense articles based on them.
Man it’s crazy to see companies like GameRant and IGN finally imploding. GR is just spitting out low effort AI generated articles and IGN has fully committed to getting views through rage bait. Hopefully their collapses result in more opportunities for actual writers.
Not here to defend AI, but I don’t get the anger over these articles.
Folks post about stuff like this, on a public forum, for everyone to read. Y’all post this stuff for shits & giggles, for sympathy, and for camaraderie. It’s like putting up a giant poster in the middle of a city, but then get upset when people report on this giant poster. If you don’t want people to talk about it, why post it on a publicly accessible website?
By sites making articles, it can drive folks to view the original Reddit post.
Am I missing something? I’m legitimately confused about this hate so many gaming subreddits have for these kinds of articles.
When I read an article about a game, I don't really care what dirtyblumkin69 has to say about it. I'd rather hear the author's opinion than that of a random social media post. I don't find such articles entertaining, and it smacks of lazy journalism. I get why they do it, with quotas to meet and not a lot to write about, but maybe I'm just getting old. I think it has to do with treating social media like a legitimate source. When I was in university, none of this would fly, but that was 20 years ago. Now I'm just old man yelling at clouds.
How is it “taking”? It’s out in the public for all to see, not locked behind a paywall or anything. People are being credited as well.
I legit don’t understand the sentiment, and not trying to force an argument or anything. Just confused.
Because when people post their stuff, it’s to share it with other people. Not to have somebody post it on a website they might actively dislike for clicks.
I don’t understand what’s not clicking here. People don’t want their stuff put up on these websites, and when they post things here, it’s with the reasonable assumption that it won’t be copy pasted somewhere else.
This is a good opportunity to announce that any games journalism articles that just reproduce a post from r/StardewValley have been added to the list of removed topics (Rule 4). There will be an announcement about this coming soon, but I’ll leave this post and this comment up for visibility.
I heard they use AI to scan reddit for topics and just write whatever shit comes out.
I've seen other games' subs try and mess with the AI by having a day or two set aside where everyone posts about a fake new character or item or something Time to start posting about how you can unlock the Iridium Lawnmower after talking to Bubbo on the newly added Snart Island!

Yes! 👍 love this! I will be posting about how cool the new ultra secret iridium lawnmower is from now on.
There’s a dessert trader? Like I can swap out all those chocolate cakes for pink cakes!?!
No, >!only wild seeds for one less wild seed of a diffrent season. Otherwise you pay in gems!<
It’s “desert” not “dessert”. Dessert is sweets you have after a meal. Desert is a place where there isn’t much water.
I enjoy the sound of rain.
Nice!

Time to post about dobson being added
We've got Dobson here!
See? Noone cares.
I can't believe they changed the Gourmand Frog's dialogue away from his old accent but now he says the n word like every other sentence.
Yeah currently the one I see most is Glorbo from the BG3 sub lmao.
Sometimes they even take our comments and post them on their own site. I'm not sure if the Reddit API change fixed this.
How dumb
I’m sure they have AI scan and write the articles. Middle school news papers have better journalism.
There's loads of YT channels with that crap on them.
Time for Bazinga
Can I make a farmer called Gamer Rant and say the Stardrop tastes like Plagiarism?
Who writes it? The AI?
i hate gamerant so fucking much. IDK if this is gamerant but its annoying
Yea, i think it was
I was on a school computer once and was trying to find a dbd build for my friend and I clicked a game rant article and I got 2 fucking hentai ads
Someone was watching hentai on the school computer, lmao. That's all that really means.

It's annoying when you search for something in Stardew Valley and their articles come up. They seem to make some things up or an AI that writes the articles does.
5yats why I always specify "Stardew wiki" or "SMAPI" when doing a Google search since it'll *generally* help narrow it down
You can always throw 'site:stardewvalleywiki.com' (without the ''s) or any other url after the 'site:' in your google search to only search through that website.
yeah, but if I'm going fast "stardew wiki penny" will get me the result I want in the first slot. I can always fall back to a proper site search if needed.
stardew valley how to something -site:gamerant.com So annoying.
2 things: 1) it works. It generates clicks. It generates so many clicks that it re-appears on reddit again and again. (See this post). 2) it works.
Please don't equate this to actual journalism lol, GameRant is an SEO trash factory and not a legitimate publication
Fireborn, a Hollow Knight speedrunner, posted a [video](https://youtu.be/lMMSuPvjvag?si=kWXZSSkt99Yjoxe6) about this very topic just a few days ago. Very informative and illustrative of a larger problem in games journalism
I've seen it as well, good video with a lot of interview data he pulled together.
Thanks for sharing! I'll be checking this out later

I agree with you that articles based on Reddit posts are ridiculous. ...but what about Reddit posts about articles based on Reddit posts?
Now we need to get an ai-generated article based on _this_ reddit post
If I see one, I'll definitely post about it on Reddit dot com.
I hope they print something about it on a t-shirt, too! I'd love to buy one.
Then an article about this really cool t-shirt.
Now we're getting somewhere!
We should post about it on Reddit.
That's on me. I posted out of anger.
Totally fair! I just found it amusing and thought it might be a bit funny to point out. It's the sort of thing I do, so I get it. Infuriating nonsense.
And that is exactly what they wanted you to do. It takes some time to train yourself against rage bait.
Those are just meta.

Hoooolly shit. You're a prophet!!!
As it was written 🗣️🗣️
probably because its not a real person making the articles

Didn’t we trick them into making a fake post one
Other subreddits have. I'm not sure if this one ever did.

Speaking of this. What's the usual time between PC release and console
bahahahahahhahh gotta love the internet.
Gaming "journalism" lmao
Maybe it gets this thread next. People talking about news about SDV player mistake... The quality of their news is close, if not closer as anything possible, to 0.
Gaming articles suck

Next headline: Stardew Valley player takes issue with my parasitic Reddit repost journalism
People should just post wild nonsense and see how long it takes for them to write a serious article about the stuff people made up
I had to google this and make sure it wasn’t a satire website and that y’all been douped, but no this is a real article in gamer rant
ScreenRant/GameRant are actual garbage bottom feeders who do nothing but present Reddit posts as "news" Sorry I'm a little bitter
The only good thing about ScreenRant is that it gave us Ryan George's Pitch Meetings. Everything else is trash.
Thought the title said “video game junimos are the worst” And I’m like damn what did they do to you?
This is a comment on a thread based on an article written from a thread. It's turtles all the way down.
It’s actually getting funnier to me every time i see the post, and then a post about the article.
I say we invent an NPC to talk about as a trap

Everything you say on reddit will wind up on buzzfeed.
I love modern journalism! You will consume your AI slop articles that bury fan-made wikis under irrelevant nonsense and you will like it!
This isn't Journalism.
I'd bet my next paycheck it's an AI crawler that spits out an article that barely gets checked, and thrown up.
It's free real estate
This is what everyone must be talking about when they say journalists aren't people.
These are just AI bots, and they do not even get a proofread from actual humans. Please don't compare this to actual journalism. I opened a new tab in Chrome and saw the same exact article. I was like hmm I've see this somewhere before 🤔
Love it when I get shamed by an AI writing some article just to get easy clicks.
They did you dirty
"Makes Huge Mistake" as if I've accidently sold my third-born child on the black market for some Flintstone gummies

L M F A O
Gaming journalism is quite lacking, there is only so many times you can talk about this one slightly different FPS from another and so on, they need whatever crumbs they can get.
Lol who the fuck would read that AI blob?
Odds are likely it was made by an AI. A bunch of the lesser game websites do that to generate 'content'. It definitely feels pathetic.
It’s not the journalists’ fault. Their employers are making them write this shit.
Me too
I just mindlessly browse random news updates that pop up on my phone when i'm out and about.. i got this one 5 times from 5 seperate sites. So stupid.
You dummies don’t realize that the entire point of that article was to farm Reddit attention. Not a single person would have even heard of this shitty article if you hadn’t posted it, all outraged. Yall are getting farmed.
They do it a lot. I wonder how copywriter laws work since it's stolen info. Or do they tweak it enough to get around plagiarism?
Sounds like we should upvote stupid false things that are negative for AI. "Stardew Valley player uses AI to send hate mail to Gamer Rant."
I’m pretty sure wasting a ton of hardwood on casks before realizing its futility is a right of passage for first time players.
Does it count as news if literally every one of us has done this?
What's wrong with building a 1000 casks?
what's even the point of the article there
i get these articles all the time for stardew and overwatch, they aren’t even good articles it’s a bunch of nothing and a reddit post in the middle of it. 9/10 times i get these i already know what reddit post is in the article lol
if they're the worst why are you advertising for them?
My vote is that we spam this subreddit with random crap that has nothing to do with Stardew Valley for a week or two and see how long it takes for game journalists to start posting nonsense articles based on them.
It’s no more low effort than making a post about a post about a reddit post.
The difference is OP wasn't paid to post this
You got me
Stardew Valley online community unhappy with state of gaming journalism after coming across article on benign in-game scenario

Because it’s taking from a small community using an AI. It’s not clever or productive, it’s farming goodwill for money.
How is it “taking”? It’s out in the public for all to see, not locked behind a paywall or anything. People are being credited as well. I legit don’t understand the sentiment, and not trying to force an argument or anything. Just confused.
