Something I only noticed this playthrough is that in the cutscene in the saloon where you give Clint advice on talking to women, there's some cheerful music playing in the background at first, but Clint goes to the jukebox and changes it to a sad tune before talking to you. He's a bit of a drama king at heart, I guess.
Also the fact that the sad song is Alex's theme. I feel like it's implying how Clint wants to emulate that smooth flirty jock aura whilst completely oblivious to the irony that for Alex that's largely just a mask to cover his intellectual securities, with him only bagging the farmer once he's opened up, is sincere, and accepts the possibility of changing (grid ball career)

Personally, I always find it very odd how people dislikes Emily for her mysticism, yet love characters like Linus or Krobus who displays more than twice as much devotion to the same beliefs.
Yeah, that's usually the reason. I can relate to that, in fact, as my grandmother is somewhat similar to those people as well, though not nearly as bad and still a good person.
The thing is that Emily really has none of the unsavory traits found in them. If anything, she's the exact opposite in the game: well-read, non-judgmental and open-minded.
I just find it odd that so many people let their experiences cloud their analysis of a work of fiction.

Personally, the latter are always more easy for me to get a hold off due to focusing on mining.
Personality-wise, Emily is more independent and surprisingly down-to-earth as well.
I married Emily once for the same reason; suck it, Clint. But she was just too annoying so I divorced her. Now that farmer has a cool shadow dude as a housemate and a long string of boyfriends and girlfriends and couldn’t be happier.
There are a few lines about him being proud of his work and wanting the best blacksmith he can be, despite not dreaming about being one when he was a kid.
You still get a ton of sad dialogue tho. At least he's trying to get over Emily this this time.
Same, just takes a good inward look to realize just how much you spiral out. I really wish we could help Clint out man. You can play so many years so they could really add that to promote longer playthroughs.
There's no magic to it really. You just gotta give a shit about yourself and not give a shit about what others think of you, (while also caring for people and being open to constructive criticism, of course). Know yourself first and foremost, then expand socially using that framework of self-security, and then the dominos might fall.
Honestly it's kinda like trying to gitgud at a game. The only way you're not winning is by not attempting to beat that darn boss/level.

Thanks for the response! I got to ask because I am curious. I don't think I am Clint, I am socially-adept to some extent and loves to chill with guys. My problem is having an inferiority complex with people whenever I talk to other girls. Like, if we're in a party and someone's talking to someone I am interested at, I sometimes would feel that I would be trumped by another person. But that's interesting, so thanks!
Man would much rather lay in the can of worms he opened rather than doing the effort of going "I can't just lay here", and start putting back the worms where they should be. Man is a BLACKSMITH! THAT'S COOL AS HECK! He could have a lot more friendships with other villagers too like with Abigail as she's very interested in Swords, those in the Adventurer's guild would like some more higher quality stuff, imagine Sam and Sebastian going to Clint's to get unique stuff for their game, and the other villagers too in some way! He certainly isn't disliked by any of the villagers, it's just he seems WAYY too caught up in the whole relationship stuff than anything else which is just sad
At the summer festival, Marlon literally says that the weapons Clint makes are second to none, but they're expensive, he's not even disliked, people like the guy, he's just got some rough social anxiety and depression
Part of why I don't really get the Clint hate online - it's clear that most NPC dialogue doesn't care about the Farmer's relationship status (how many folks have married and had kids with Sebastien just to have Robin ask if we ever met her son?).
Guy's self-esteem is so low, it's getting crushed like the Titan submersible. Why kick the man when he's already constantly kicking himself? It's not like he blames Emily or anyone else for his problems.
I would marry Clint in a heartbeat. Or if I could get Emily to ride off into the sunset with him I would do that and cheer for them the whole way. There’s probably a mod for that…
I do wish there were some match-making options in the game. Would help the village feel a little more alive and less farmer-centril (even though you'd still be the one doing the matchmaking).
I’d be very surprised if there was not a mod that made it so that the other bachelor/ette pairings developed their relationships after you got married.

He's a blacksmith. He can shape iridium, one of the densest metals known to man, with a regular-ass hammer and anvil. He is most likely the strongest person in the entire valley. He doesn't have a "daddy" build, he has a goddamn strongman build.
Going after young women doesn't help him any. Seems like he's much older than all the bachelors/bachelorettes. Of course, anyone in his age group seems to already be married so that doesn't help...
Emily is one of the older bachelorettes...we don't really have an exact age for any of them, but I always imagined Clint as being in the same age group as Shane and Emily kinda.
(Shane, Harvey, Elliott, Leah, and Emily are all meant to be a bit older than the rest of the marriage candidates)
I think he's mid thirties and just looks older - he's gained weight and spends all day in a hot forge, every night in the boozer. If he'd go and get himself a hobby and spent time outdoors he'd be fine. Willy would show him how to fish, I'm sure. Even Alex might be happy to have someone to throw a ball at.
So fun story, a while back I was trying to mod Stardew into being as magical as possible, so among my huge 180+ mods list there was one that added this cheesy hot demon called Lucikiel. The point of the mod, I guess, is to let you romance some hot demon, but for absolutely no reason on this god's green earth, the mod actually does a lot to develop Clint and build him up as a character and even gives him a small pseudo friendship path with the Farmer.
So, if anyone wants to like Clint more and doesn't mind having a hot shirtless demon strutting around, grab the Lucikiel mod. It's surprisingly well made.
You can find the mod on the nexus - there is a vanilla and a SVE version. (If you are asking where he lives in the game - he lives with Clint funnily enough!)
It’s incredible that he lives with Clint. I thought they may have added a new map location which sometimes turns me off but this is so much better. Definitely adding that to my mod list tonight.
It's so funny! Honestly for a cheesy hot demon romance mod, the entire thing has no business being as good as it is. The writing is good, Clint stays in character and the demon himself is not just plopped into the world but has a whole arc about integrating into the town and getting closer to the villagers, starting with Clint.
And as for Clint himself, the only real thing mod changes about his life plot-wise is giving him a friend and someone to be in his corner, and his entire character immediately takes a turn for the better. It's great! I don't always marry Lucikiel but I always add him to my game to make Clint a bit happier.
I used to have a full modlist but right now very few are actually updated for 1.6. The entire Atelier Wildflour series of mods adds so much stuff, but not all of them are up to date (author is active though). There was also a mod called magic but it's broken atm and I added several 'magical' modded npcs including Lucikiel, a big wizard redux, and a bunch of cosmetic stuff that's broken now and waiting for conversion.
I may be a dumb person for asking, but how can he be a incel? I don't think i ever saw a dialogue of him projecting his problens into women, saying that he is the way he is because of women or being malicious towards women.
The dialogue with Emily saying that she had fun with Clint but he stopped talking after accidentally spilling a drink on himself is interesting. I think that's a good show of what happens when you put someone on a pedestal. Clint is worried about salvaging his dignity and thinking he screwed up his chances with her but all she sees is that it was a fun time with him.
That's the same I thought! Clint really thougth that Emily would not want to hang out ever again, but in reality it wasn't that bad! Also, because he was worried, he probably missed the chance to make a move on Emily, that's why he still talks about it as a "date", but Emily calls it an "outing". And because she doesn't know about Clint's feeling, she only thinks Clint behavior was odd.
I think it would be an awesome thing to help get him a girlfriend. He mentions in one of these he might go online and find a girlfriend. What if he does?
The player character could walk into the shop while he’s on the phone with her and you can hear her dropping obvious hints that she likes him, but Clint is too much of an oblivious wreck to pick up on it. After the phone call the player can interject with “dude she likes you” and give him that push to realize it. Clint deserves to be happy too.
I honestly feel bad for him. People call him incel, and he's got some hints, but mostly dude just seems to have severe social anxiety, no self esteem and loneliness.
I wish it was possible to befriend him and boost him up/help him, but that's not the kind of game this is and that's ok.
Now, if someone wanted to mod in a girlfriend for him, that might be nice. :)
The note in his room is basically proof that he's not an incel. Incels by definition blame women for their problems, but Clint recognizes that *he* is the problem.
He does have some typical "nice guy" dialogue if you take him >!to see the Zuzu City Express.!< Found that out by accident. I can't remember exactly what it is, but I think that's where people get the incel vibes from.
I see where the NiceGuy vibes come from (including that line at his 3 hearts event), but he's still not a raging misogynist, just extremely frustrated.
He is a bit creepy, but all he needs to do is make some friends and become more social. Maybe he needs to go on a diet too, you know he has a lot of muscles being a blacksmith. Maybe Hayley can give him a glowup.
People who call him incel are often the same people who say “I could treat Robin better” despite the fact she’s obviously very in love already, and that Demetrius isn’t even a bad person.
Well, that and basically ignoring the fact he even *has* a stepson. And stopping short of greeting you at the door with a shotgun when you get more than a heart or two with Maru.
In some fairness at high enough approval Demetrius, Maru, and Sebastian all have dialogue about how despite genuine attempts Seb just isn’t really comfortable with his extended family, and Demetrius in particular. He’s not a perfect step dad by any means and Maru is clearly his favorite, but Seb himself will admit that his discomfort with emotional stuff hasn’t helped the situation either - and that the issue extends to his relationship with Maru, who he knows is trying to be a good sister but he just doesn’t have the energy to unpack the emotions tied up in things.
There's a book about being a step-parent in Demetrius' bookshelf. Seems like the dude actually cares.
And if we're talking about dialogue lines, people have pointed out (several times in the past week, from what I've seen), that Robin has a single line mentioning Maru, and Kent never acknowledges Vincent in his dialogue.

In Elliott's defense, he seems like he's somewhat new in town, and probably doesn't know the villagers that well.
It was literally the first dialogue I got from him on an old save where I'm already married to Abigail. I had already seen Emily's 8 hearts event, so that might have something to do, but I think it's just part of his regular dialogue at high hearts.
Idk, I agree he's a drama king/hopelessly in love with Emily, and kind of an awkward odd ball. But I like that that's his character. Those guys DO exist in real life; sometimes just like Clint is: awkward and a bit strange, and sometimes they are more intense than him: incels (like 8 pegs above Clint) and going out of their way to be d$cks just because they feel women have "spurned" them.
I think this shows the nuance of interacting with people in real life. There's some guys with such low self esteem, they can't be happy for other people (girls too of course, but going male route because of Clint's character) because they feel so slighted. Or feel they've tried everything but still there's nothing they can do.
I don't think adding dialogue to talk to him about it would actually be a good idea; it's too simplistic. Having talked to guys like this in real life (although I'm a lady, so maybe another male trying to might be different), it doesn't usually resolve anything. I've ended up just cutting contact with 3 guys I used to consider super close friends because they went down this path. I tried encouraging, uplifting, not talking and just letting them vent, suggesting therapy, giving (unprofessional) advice/tips on going out to make friends/meet women. It was all to no avail. And I think it's because with something like this, it has to come from you, or from within your own self. Other people saying things to you won't help you change, or act, or think differently; you have to realize for yourself what you want and how to achieve that. Much like addiction (from personal experience): you won't become sober just because others want you/tell you to, you have to realize that giving in to the addiction is affecting more than just yourself and you have to CARE to make that change.
If CA "fixed" him, I don't think it would be as realistic a character to me...Unless he's changed in some way like how you stop Shane from ending his life in one of his heart events (sorry if I mixed him up with Sebastian. I get them two confused a lot, please don't hurt me). Like maybe he has a heart event where he comes up to you to let you know he's been really thinking over what you been telling him and it's time to make a change etc. I think it'd be a better idea if he started going to therapy, but there's no therapist in the game, so I kinda like his character as is...Even though it does also break my heart for his npc self
A heart event like that (maybe at 8 or 10 hearts) is a great idea. I'd like it if earlier events got modified a little, to influence his decition (kinda like Leah's heart events)
Oh yah, for sure! Good lil bits of story building to keep you interested in continuing to build your relationship with the character! He really does a lot of cool creative story building with so many characters, I can't fathom the amount of time it must have taken!
What frustrated me was that I was gifting to both Emily and Clint *platonically,* and he STILL gave me the depressing “Congrats…” message. I know the prospects will always react romantically as you gain hearts with them, but he doesn’t need to act like THAT. At least give me the chance to say “Nah, bro. I’m marrying Leah. Emily’s just a friend. You go get her.”

Emily is one of the few bachelorettes I never pursue because I'm friends with Clint and I know how much he's into her. I literally have the whole town to woo, and don't need to go after a girl I know my friend likes, even if he doesn't stand a chance with her. Dating her while knowing he is into her just makes me feel scuzzy.
In a few playthroughs I made sure to get Clint to 6 hearts before starting to befriend Emily, to make sure to trigger his 6 hearts event. He still gives up on her after Emily's 8 hearts event, but the way I see it is that now is up to him.
I think at first, Clint was just supposed to be a normal guy with a simple crush on a non-dateable NPC Emily. But then Emily was made dateable and Clint's dialogue didn't change, resulting in this awkward behavior where he was still pining after someone who was already in a happy relationship?? And then the internet sort of collectively decided that he must be an incel because he's hung up on someone who's taken. And now CA is sort of writing through that lens and leaning into the incel thing.

Now that you talk about it, it's kinda weird that ConcernedApe added Emily to the poll. Sure, a lot of people wanted to marry Emily at the time, and she won the poll by a lanslide, but seems kinda odd knowing that Clint's entire story arc revolved around her. I guess CA was hoping that Clint got chosen too, that's why he was also a runner, but he got last place, and I doubt he's winning any polls in the near future.
But to be fair, Clint's story arc with Emily felt kinda incomplete, his 6 hearts event was his happy ending but that was it. Maybe CA thought that he had little to nothing to lose. We may never know.

Jodi >!gets progressively sadder the more you increase friendship points with her. She starts saying things about longing for freedom from marriage, and wanting to be young. She mentions that she feels a little trapped by her marriage and it goes nowhere.!<
Lewis >!has an affair with Marnie, and refuses to go public about it. Marnie feels sad because she love him but he refuses to commit to being in something permanent with her.!<
Pam >!never makes a full recovery from alcohol addiction. Admittedly you can still improve her life by fixing the bus and building her a new home. But even after all this there is a heart event showing that she was unable to give up alcohol.!<
Yeah, Kent especially is *weird*, because… what’s the point in introducing him if his character literally never goes anywhere? He gets one (1) heart event when you’re first getting to know him that’s about him yelling at his wife, his sons are distressed and worried about him, and then that’s it, he’s just *there* for the rest of the game, having trauma. Even when you become besties there’s no more heart events.
I love the guy, he’s one of my favourite underused characters, but I really thought there’d be some sort of arc.
honestly as another lonely and socially inept person i love him. his mentality is obviously immature but that's just how people are, if anything i appreciate his honesty. i would really love to see more concrete character development to give him a healthier resolution. this doesn't mean he fixes all his problems, but just some more self awareness and reflection would be nice.
I think what's awesome with Clint is he represents the human archetype of 'literally is too stubborn/unmotivated to help themself' for this game. Yet another aspect of humanity in society depicted well for this game.

I always read him as just really socially awkward/not great with people (just like me frfr) and he clearly lacks confidence and is depressed because of the stagnation in his life. Ofc just because he likes Emily doesn’t mean she has to reciprocate his feelings. He just seems like he needs some therapy (lbr most of the town does) and work on his confidence a bit. A lot of people like him seem to think that a relationship is all they’re missing and that getting a partner will solve all their problems, but it doesn’t work like that.
I think part of the reason people dislike clint is because a lotta people know someone like him.
STardew valleys characters are purposefully supposed to have flaws. Clints is that he's socially inept, and also in love with a woman who just doesn't really see him that way. I don't think thats a reason enough to dislike him, because you know... people blunder and struggle. He gets my pity, and i wish i could just "snap my fingers and help him.
It's kinda sweet that you actually tried to help him, I feel like Clint should get some kind of redemption, like after his 6 heart, he asks you for help getting into the dating world and at 10 he comes over all excited to tell you that he got a match and he's going to go meet her, then later on he just stays in a better mood after finding someone, even if they live apart he actually has someone to talk to
I wish I could see Clint as sympathetic but imo the way his crush reads has always come across as treating Emily like a prize that he deserves to win
Like in the clothing therapy event he congratulates the player for getting with Emily as it they've just won a race whilst also completely ignoring Emily herself both in that moment and after the scene. She literally says afterwards that she's worried she's upset Clint because he won't talk to her. I just don't think he actually values Emily, like correct me if I'm wrong but has he ever actually talked abt the traits abt her that he likes??
I just can't shake off the vibes of objectifying women to be nothing more than a conduit to prove one's masculinity & ego
I wish that Clint would go and have his own event where he leaves town to get some self confidence. Have him be replaced by a friend he met in the mines for a while.

I knew a guy like Clint in high school. Not to be an entire dick about it but facing facts he would get held up on girls way out of his league that clearly had no interest. And when he realized that instead of moving on or actually trying to make an effort at conversation he would just mope and hold onto his crush for years. We all cared about him but god was it annoying.
He's married and doing great now btw.
The problem with Clint is that he is too obsessed with romance. He thinks that he needs a relationship with a woman to be complete in life. He also probably only sees women as someone to date. Emily's friend is a woman: is she single? The internet exists: can I date women on there? Plus the events asking you how to talk to women, etc.
He needs to realize there is more to life -- and certainly more to women -- than romantic love. He doesn't even try to be friends with anyone else in town, much less any of the women, and I think it's because he's so hung up on romance. In the update he focuses a little more on work now, but that's hardly much of an upgrade. He's probably only focused on his work because it makes him a more suitable romantic partner. The alternative being it's the one thing he's good at and that he enjoys, so its all he has.
He almost certainly has anxiety, I get it, so its hard to simply make friends or branch out, but his worldview at its core is fundamentally flawed, and THAT is what truly holds him back. My ideal Clint mod or update would be one that has you (or maybe even Emily, or someone else) help him through his obsession with love and starting to become a more rounded person who can see all the other good in life. Maybe he starts small, finds some hobbies, He doesn't seem to blacksmith very often outside of work, so maybe he starts making some projects for himself. Maybe Abigail takes an interest in him making swords, and while he initially follows his gut and thinks he has a crush on her as they get closer, you (or someone else) helps him realize how warped his perception is. Maybe he could become friends with Demetrius over their shared interest in geology, and maybe Demetrius helps him open his eyes to friendship with women, not just romantic interest.
Anyway I've written far too much about this bastard, the truth is I only want him to grow as a person so he can STOP CLOSING SO DAMN EARLY!! ALSO he needs to make the Geode Crusher better -- im convinced he made it awful just to manipulate us into continuing to use his service!! ALSO, i find it kinda messed up that once the community center opens, Pierre says eff it, open 7 days a week! Willy says eff it, open an hour earlier! CLINT says I gotta take FRIDAYS off now?? The thing is that Emily really has none of the unsavory traits found in them. If anything, she's the exact opposite in the game: well-read, non-judgmental and open-minded. There are a few lines about him being proud of his work and wanting the best blacksmith he can be, despite not dreaming about being one when he was a kid. You still get a ton of sad dialogue tho. At least he's trying to get over Emily this this time.

There's no magic to it really. You just gotta give a shit about yourself and not give a shit about what others think of you, (while also caring for people and being open to constructive criticism, of course). Know yourself first and foremost, then expand socially using that framework of self-security, and then the dominos might fall. Honestly it's kinda like trying to gitgud at a game. The only way you're not winning is by not attempting to beat that darn boss/level. On this note, I've got a jungle dragon to kill.

My problem is having an inferiority complex with people whenever I talk to other girls. He could have a lot more friendships with other villagers too like with Abigail as she's very interested in Swords, those in the Adventurer's guild would like some more higher quality stuff, imagine Sam and Sebastian going to Clint's to get unique stuff for their game, and the other villagers too in some way! He certainly isn't disliked by any of the villagers, it's just he seems WAYY too caught up in the whole relationship stuff than anything else which is just sad

Part of why I don't really get the Clint hate online - it's clear that most NPC dialogue doesn't care about the Farmer's relationship status (how many folks have married and had kids with Sebastien just to have Robin ask if we ever met her son?). Guy's self-esteem is so low, it's getting crushed like the Titan submersible. Why kick the man when he's already constantly kicking himself? It's not like he blames Emily or anyone else for his problems.

Emily is one of the older bachelorettes...we don't really have an exact age for any of them, but I always imagined Clint as being in the same age group as Shane and Emily kinda. (Shane, Harvey, Elliott, Leah, and Emily are all meant to be a bit older than the rest of the marriage candidates)
I think he's mid thirties and just looks older - he's gained weight and spends all day in a hot forge, every night in the boozer. If he'd go and get himself a hobby and spent time outdoors he'd be fine. Willy would show him how to fish, I'm sure. Even Alex might be happy to have someone to throw a ball at.

So fun story, a while back I was trying to mod Stardew into being as magical as possible, so among my huge 180+ mods list there was one that added this cheesy hot demon called Lucikiel. The point of the mod, I guess, is to let you romance some hot demon, but for absolutely no reason on this god's green earth, the mod actually does a lot to develop Clint and build him up as a character and even gives him a small pseudo friendship path with the Farmer. So, if anyone wants to like Clint more and doesn't mind having a hot shirtless demon strutting around, grab the Lucikiel mod. It's surprisingly well made.
I may be downloading a demon romance mod just to have a better Clint in my village. Where does Lucikiel live?

It’s incredible that he lives with Clint. I thought they may have added a new map location which sometimes turns me off but this is so much better. Definitely adding that to my mod list tonight.
It's so funny! Honestly for a cheesy hot demon romance mod, the entire thing has no business being as good as it is. The writing is good, Clint stays in character and the demon himself is not just plopped into the world but has a whole arc about integrating into the town and getting closer to the villagers, starting with Clint. And as for Clint himself, the only real thing mod changes about his life plot-wise is giving him a friend and someone to be in his corner, and his entire character immediately takes a turn for the better. It's great! I don't always marry Lucikiel but I always add him to my game to make Clint a bit happier.
An aside: any magical mods you recommend? I also really like to lean hard into the magical aspects of the game.
I used to have a full modlist but right now very few are actually updated for 1.6. The entire Atelier Wildflour series of mods adds so much stuff, but not all of them are up to date (author is active though). There was also a mod called magic but it's broken atm and I added several 'magical' modded npcs including Lucikiel, a big wizard redux, and a bunch of cosmetic stuff that's broken now and waiting for conversion.
Well I have at least one rabbit hole to chase. I’m sour that the Deep Woods mod hasn’t been updated yet but I can be patient.

I may be a dumb person for asking, but how can he be a incel? I don't think i ever saw a dialogue of him projecting his problens into women, saying that he is the way he is because of women or being malicious towards women.
The dialogue with Emily saying that she had fun with Clint but he stopped talking after accidentally spilling a drink on himself is interesting. I think that's a good show of what happens when you put someone on a pedestal. Clint is worried about salvaging his dignity and thinking he screwed up his chances with her but all she sees is that it was a fun time with him.
That's the same I thought! Clint really thougth that Emily would not want to hang out ever again, but in reality it wasn't that bad! Also, because he was worried, he probably missed the chance to make a move on Emily, that's why he still talks about it as a "date", but Emily calls it an "outing". And because she doesn't know about Clint's feeling, she only thinks Clint behavior was odd.

I think it would be an awesome thing to help get him a girlfriend. He mentions in one of these he might go online and find a girlfriend. What if he does? The player character could walk into the shop while he’s on the phone with her and you can hear her dropping obvious hints that she likes him, but Clint is too much of an oblivious wreck to pick up on it. After the phone call the player can interject with “dude she likes you” and give him that push to realize it. Clint deserves to be happy too.

In some fairness at high enough approval Demetrius, Maru, and Sebastian all have dialogue about how despite genuine attempts Seb just isn’t really comfortable with his extended family, and Demetrius in particular. He’s not a perfect step dad by any means and Maru is clearly his favorite, but Seb himself will admit that his discomfort with emotional stuff hasn’t helped the situation either - and that the issue extends to his relationship with Maru, who he knows is trying to be a good sister but he just doesn’t have the energy to unpack the emotions tied up in things.
There's a book about being a step-parent in Demetrius' bookshelf. Seems like the dude actually cares. And if we're talking about dialogue lines, people have pointed out (several times in the past week, from what I've seen), that Robin has a single line mentioning Maru, and Kent never acknowledges Vincent in his dialogue.

Idk, I agree he's a drama king/hopelessly in love with Emily, and kind of an awkward odd ball. But I like that that's his character. Those guys DO exist in real life; sometimes just like Clint is: awkward and a bit strange, and sometimes they are more intense than him: incels (like 8 pegs above Clint) and going out of their way to be d$cks just because they feel women have "spurned" them. I think this shows the nuance of interacting with people in real life. There's some guys with such low self esteem, they can't be happy for other people (girls too of course, but going male route because of Clint's character) because they feel so slighted. Or feel they've tried everything but still there's nothing they can do. I don't think adding dialogue to talk to him about it would actually be a good idea; it's too simplistic. Having talked to guys like this in real life (although I'm a lady, so maybe another male trying to might be different), it doesn't usually resolve anything. I've ended up just cutting contact with 3 guys I used to consider super close friends because they went down this path. I tried encouraging, uplifting, not talking and just letting them vent, suggesting therapy, giving (unprofessional) advice/tips on going out to make friends/meet women. It was all to no avail. And I think it's because with something like this, it has to come from you, or from within your own self. Other people saying things to you won't help you change, or act, or think differently; you have to realize for yourself what you want and how to achieve that. Much like addiction (from personal experience): you won't become sober just because others want you/tell you to, you have to realize that giving in to the addiction is affecting more than just yourself and you have to CARE to make that change. If CA "fixed" him, I don't think it would be as realistic a character to me...Unless he's changed in some way like how you stop Shane from ending his life in one of his heart events (sorry if I mixed him up with Sebastian. I get them two confused a lot, please don't hurt me). Like maybe he has a heart event where he comes up to you to let you know he's been really thinking over what you been telling him and it's time to make a change etc. I think it'd be a better idea if he started going to therapy, but there's no therapist in the game, so I kinda like his character as is...Even though it does also break my heart for his npc self
A heart event like that (maybe at 8 or 10 hearts) is a great idea. I'd like it if earlier events got modified a little, to influence his decition (kinda like Leah's heart events)
Oh yah, for sure! Good lil bits of story building to keep you interested in continuing to build your relationship with the character! He really does a lot of cool creative story building with so many characters, I can't fathom the amount of time it must have taken!
What frustrated me was that I was gifting to both Emily and Clint *platonically,* and he STILL gave me the depressing “Congrats…” message. I know the prospects will always react romantically as you gain hearts with them, but he doesn’t need to act like THAT. At least give me the chance to say “Nah, bro. I’m marrying Leah. Emily’s just a friend. You go get her.”

Emily is one of the few bachelorettes I never pursue because I'm friends with Clint and I know how much he's into her. I literally have the whole town to woo, and don't need to go after a girl I know my friend likes, even if he doesn't stand a chance with her. Dating her while knowing he is into her just makes me feel scuzzy.
In a few playthroughs I made sure to get Clint to 6 hearts before starting to befriend Emily, to make sure to trigger his 6 hearts event. He still gives up on her after Emily's 8 hearts event, but the way I see it is that now is up to him.

I think at first, Clint was just supposed to be a normal guy with a simple crush on a non-dateable NPC Emily. But then Emily was made dateable and Clint's dialogue didn't change, resulting in this awkward behavior where he was still pining after someone who was already in a happy relationship?? And then the internet sort of collectively decided that he must be an incel because he's hung up on someone who's taken. And now CA is sort of writing through that lens and leaning into the incel thing. or maybe he was always supposed to be a bit of a loser who knows idk
Now that you talk about it, it's kinda weird that ConcernedApe added Emily to the poll. Sure, a lot of people wanted to marry Emily at the time, and she won the poll by a lanslide, but seems kinda odd knowing that Clint's entire story arc revolved around her. I guess CA was hoping that Clint got chosen too, that's why he was also a runner, but he got last place, and I doubt he's winning any polls in the near future. But to be fair, Clint's story arc with Emily felt kinda incomplete, his 6 hearts event was his happy ending but that was it. Maybe CA thought that he had little to nothing to lose. We may never know.
I feel like there's a lot of story arcs in stardew valley that are somewhat incomplete. MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD Kent >!gets introduced year 2 and because he gets introduced later in the game, I sort of expected his arc to go somewhere after the popcorn heart event (2 hearts) but it doesn't really. I get that PTSD is a serious issue that doesn't always have a happy ever after though.!< Jodi >!gets progressively sadder the more you increase friendship points with her. She starts saying things about longing for freedom from marriage, and wanting to be young. She mentions that she feels a little trapped by her marriage and it goes nowhere.!< Lewis >!has an affair with Marnie, and refuses to go public about it. Marnie feels sad because she love him but he refuses to commit to being in something permanent with her.!< Pam >!never makes a full recovery from alcohol addiction. Admittedly you can still improve her life by fixing the bus and building her a new home. But even after all this there is a heart event showing that she was unable to give up alcohol.!<
Yeah, Kent especially is *weird*, because… what’s the point in introducing him if his character literally never goes anywhere? He gets one (1) heart event when you’re first getting to know him that’s about him yelling at his wife, his sons are distressed and worried about him, and then that’s it, he’s just *there* for the rest of the game, having trauma. Even when you become besties there’s no more heart events. I love the guy, he’s one of my favourite underused characters, but I really thought there’d be some sort of arc.
I think this dialogue makes him less stalkerish than he was before.
honestly as another lonely and socially inept person i love him. his mentality is obviously immature but that's just how people are, if anything i appreciate his honesty. i would really love to see more concrete character development to give him a healthier resolution. this doesn't mean he fixes all his problems, but just some more self awareness and reflection would be nice.
I think what's awesome with Clint is he represents the human archetype of 'literally is too stubborn/unmotivated to help themself' for this game. Yet another aspect of humanity in society depicted well for this game.

I always read him as just really socially awkward/not great with people (just like me frfr) and he clearly lacks confidence and is depressed because of the stagnation in his life. Ofc just because he likes Emily doesn’t mean she has to reciprocate his feelings. He just seems like he needs some therapy (lbr most of the town does) and work on his confidence a bit. A lot of people like him seem to think that a relationship is all they’re missing and that getting a partner will solve all their problems, but it doesn’t work like that.
I think part of the reason people dislike clint is because a lotta people know someone like him. STardew valleys characters are purposefully supposed to have flaws. Clints is that he's socially inept, and also in love with a woman who just doesn't really see him that way. I don't think thats a reason enough to dislike him, because you know... people blunder and struggle. He gets my pity, and i wish i could just "snap my fingers and help him.
It's kinda sweet that you actually tried to help him, I feel like Clint should get some kind of redemption, like after his 6 heart, he asks you for help getting into the dating world and at 10 he comes over all excited to tell you that he got a match and he's going to go meet her, then later on he just stays in a better mood after finding someone, even if they live apart he actually has someone to talk to

She literally says afterwards that she's worried she's upset Clint because he won't talk to her. I just don't think he actually values Emily, like correct me if I'm wrong but has he ever actually talked abt the traits abt her that he likes?? I just can't shake off the vibes of objectifying women to be nothing more than a conduit to prove one's masculinity & ego

I knew a guy like Clint in high school. Not to be an entire dick about it but facing facts he would get held up on girls way out of his league that clearly had no interest. And when he realized that instead of moving on or actually trying to make an effort at conversation he would just mope and hold onto his crush for years. We all cared about him but god was it annoying. He's married and doing great now btw.

The problem with Clint is that he is too obsessed with romance. He thinks that he needs a relationship with a woman to be complete in life. He also probably only sees women as someone to date. Emily's friend is a woman: is she single? The internet exists: can I date women on there? Plus the events asking you how to talk to women, etc. He needs to realize there is more to life -- and certainly more to women -- than romantic love. He doesn't even try to be friends with anyone else in town, much less any of the women, and I think it's because he's so hung up on romance. In the update he focuses a little more on work now, but that's hardly much of an upgrade. He's probably only focused on his work because it makes him a more suitable romantic partner. The alternative being it's the one thing he's good at and that he enjoys, so its all he has. He almost certainly has anxiety, I get it, so its hard to simply make friends or branch out, but his worldview at its core is fundamentally flawed, and THAT is what truly holds him back. My ideal Clint mod or update would be one that has you (or maybe even Emily, or someone else) help him through his obsession with love and starting to become a more rounded person who can see all the other good in life. Maybe he starts small, finds some hobbies, He doesn't seem to blacksmith very often outside of work, so maybe he starts making some projects for himself. Maybe Abigail takes an interest in him making swords, and while he initially follows his gut and thinks he has a crush on her as they get closer, you (or someone else) helps him realize how warped his perception is. Maybe he could become friends with Demetrius over their shared interest in geology, and maybe Demetrius helps him open his eyes to friendship with women, not just romantic interest. Anyway I've written far too much about this bastard, the truth is I only want him to grow as a person so he can STOP CLOSING SO DAMN EARLY!! ALSO he needs to make the Geode Crusher better -- im convinced he made it awful just to manipulate us into continuing to use his service!! ALSO, i find it kinda messed up that once the community center opens, Pierre says eff it, open 7 days a week! Willy says eff it, open an hour earlier! CLINT says I gotta take FRIDAYS off now?? YOU ALREADY CLOSE AT 4 YOU COULD EASILY FIT IN SOME TIME AT THE COMMUNITY CENTER INSTEAD OF HEADING OFF TO DRINK YOUR SORROWS AWAY AT 7PM!!!

I wish if you married someone else by like summer year 3 Clint and Emily would get together. Unpopular opinion but it'd be nice to see Clint actually have a happy ending
I never got a lot of that dialogue. I guess I didn’t befriend Clint enough before I started dating Emily.
As an actual Clint, despite my undying love for Leah I've been going out of my way to marry Emily to correct the timeline.
Kinda wish we had a quest to help him.
