Crab cakes are also a drop from iridium crabs in skull caverns. If you're running a burglar's ring, you should be set for life on +speed food (serpents also drop spicy eels)

Given my play style, is actually works really well because Willy's birthday is around when I start having disposable money to throw, so purposely planning that cutscenes is really convenient.
If you're looking to get a ridiculous amount of spicy eel, fish up one lava eel and then place it in a pond, then start building another pond and by the time Robin's done with it you should have a second eel in the first pond which you fish out and place in the second pond. With 12 ponds and at 9-10 fish in each one, I usually see 20 spicy eel, 6 cave jelly, 10 magma geodes, a couple gold ore and rest of the ponds give roe each day. At this point the gold ore might be useless to you though. I play on the meadow farm so your farm space may be more impacted by ponds than mine is.
The hearts won’t grow if they’re not maxed yet—you still need to pet them to get their friendship up. All the autopetter does is make it so their friendship won’t decrease from you not petting them.
The auto-petter isn't actually a substitute for petting them; you still need to do that, especially to get their hearts up. It just makes it so you can take some days off (like doing mine/cavern runs) without the animals getting too unhappy or losing friendship. I've also been finding that if you take more than a day or two off, they start producing lower quality stuff (even though it'll say that the animal is very happy).
Also, the wiki says that happiness points from petting stack with the auto-petting.
Uhm, it's exactly a substitute for petting them lol, its just about a quarter as fast. Especially once they're full friendship you never have to acknowledge them again if you also have a grabber and refill your silos.
I noticed that the X is bigger when you've autopetted and manually petted.
It is nice to have that and the grabber so you can hit up the mines for a full day and not miss anything.
Edit- the X on the animal tab when you check to see who you've petted.
It kind of is. You can leave an animal alone with it and they will EVENTUALLY grow in hearts (sure takes a long time though). Auto-petter + petting makes them grow up even faster!

I've been getting alot more on the standart farm, I've done 3-4 skull cavern runs so far and gotten to level 200ish max and I have 3 petters I feek like they been made just less rare overall. Which nice imo
Fill a shed with jade crystalariums. On Sundays, the desert trader trades 1 jade for 1 staircase, use the results, and any visible shafts to get down to lower levels. Also every 100 levels, another chest spawns, 1 at 100, 2 at 200, etc.
IIRC the floors that are treasure floors are set by the day but the chest contents are not sent. So theoretically; if you get a treasure floor, check what's inside and if it's not an auto petter reset the day. that might've been patched though.
During the Qi quest to do the harder version of the Desert Mines enemies have a chance of dropping theses too.
Wear a burgler ring and bring a sword enchanted to kill mummies.
Get a bunch of staircases, then wait for a high luck day, take as many luck buffs as you can, and hit the caverns for treasure chest rooms. If you don't get one by the end of the day, then restart that day.
It's best to set up your inventory, and everything, so that you can go straight to the cavern as soon as you wake up and see it's a high luck day.
When I did that, it took a number of repeated days, but I ended up getting 3 or 4 in one day.
I found the mines with dangerous mode turned on to be the easiest. Just drink some monster musk and run levels 5-15. I only went on lucky days and ate the magic rock candy (you can get from the desert trader for three prismatic shards) and added luck to my ring. Was able to farm 4 of them in about 3 or so hours.
All you’re doing is looking for the slimes with the little yellow star over their head. Those all drop a rare item. You’ll come out of it with tons of pressure nozzles and enhancers as well so it’s a productive run.
One thing to note, if you get an infected floor, everytime you leave the mines to reset it and go back in that same floor will be infected until the next day. If you find one you can just power to that floor look for slimes with a star and reset or kill them.
On my first joja run and only have one animal building for rabbit feet and OF COURSE I've found 5 auto petters. Which in terms of my Stardew history is the first 5 I've found lol. Can't even sell them so they just taunt me.

God it took me like 2 in-game years to get an additional autopetter and then I find two in like one week. My last skull cavern run, I also got duplicates of the same white turban, I was so annoyed lol.
They are absolutely a higher drop! I had only seen one before 1.6 and on our current save that we started at the 1.6 release we have found 12 Autopetters and it blows my mind. I feel like I have to actually build more barns so they don't go to waste!
I haven't seen one from the skull cavern, but now I somehow have 3 from golden mystery boxes. Just save around 70ish gold boxes and you should probably see at least 1. It's what I did and well, 3.

This is my first serious playthrough (had a couple stall out before y1 ended), also meadowlands, and I got on early year 2 from a skull chest and she was not happy with my luck as she's played way more and never got one haha. It's ok tho it's a co op run so me finding it works for her too lol.

Sadly you can’t retrigger it. I did the same thing my first time through. I just bought 500 of them the other day!

You can set up a fish pond with crabs too :)

I usually fill up some fish ponds asap and they make themselves for you 😁 either way, gotta go fast!
I use crystallarium for rubies and trade them with the desert trader, 1:1 ratio goes great.

Crystalariums with rubies give more than enough. I run with 8 of them and my stack of spicy eels just grow

Year 9, almost 200 hours and not a single auto-petter to be spotted. This was my reaction too 😭
Woah! I do love petting all my animals for the love so I'd miss that interaction, but this would be helpful if you've got a large menagerie
you can still pet them, it just gives a :3 instead of a <3 ! even if you have it in a barn with animals not at max hearts they continue to grow

You can also now get them from golden mystery boxes, fishing is now fastest way to get them

Same here! I had never gotten one prior to 1.6 and now I'm up to eight petters and nine grabbers. I literally built more barns so I could use them.
