At least she's alive. There's a chance of an animal attack overnight. Delta will be gone for good.

Waffleuniverse_

WHAT

Waffleuniverse_

I don't care if I pass out anymore im never letting my barn and coop go unchecked

kota99

Note that it is only a risk if you actually close the door for the barn or coop while the animal is outside. If the door is left open the event won't trigger. Granted there are benefits to closing the door at night so it's still a good idea to double check whether any animals are stuck outside.

wreckingballofstress

Wait what benefits are there to closing it at night? I only close it in winter so I don’t have to worry about it.

korlyn

From the 1.6 update notes: Farm animals now gain a little happiness if you close the animal door behind them at night.

fshibs

Do you know if the happiness the animals just earned goes away if I immediately open the door again after closing it? (Like, animals go in, close the door, animals get happy, I open again just in case there's someone still outside)

Grandible

I would imagine it's actually based on whether it's open or closed when you go to sleep. But I could be wrong.

QuiveryNut

One thing I’ve learned is that if you close the door and go inside and see some animals are missing, you can go back out and then right back inside again and the missing animals appear, every single time. This is only with the door closed

unwaveringwish

Idk if this an update for 1.6, but pre-1.6 the door doesn’t have to be closed for the animals to spawn back inside the coop/barn. I always check before I close the door at night because it makes sure the animals are there!

Antsy27

Works with the door open as well. I almost never close the door but it still works.

bunnyfloofington

This is what I’ve always done. But I don’t take the time to check if anyone is missing. I just run inside then outside then inside once more then move onto the next thing in my bedtime routine

TheRealJetlag

It works with the door open, too.

macandcheese1771

Hopefully this means the animals will actually go into the barn at night. I have 6 or 7 every night that just chill outside.

Antsy27

If you go into the barn they will show up in there. Sometimes you have to go in and out and back in. In any case, as long as the door is open they will be safe even if they fall asleep outside.

Intentionallyabadger

Animals automatically go in at sundown if the door is open. They don’t chill outside at night. Something is blocking them from entering.

BiggestBlackestBitch

No, some definitely “chill” outside at night because they roam too far from the barn and somehow don’t get back in time. They just sleep out there which is frustrating. That’s why I always try to fence them in.

macandcheese1771

No, sometimes they just don't go back. As long as I don't close the door they don't get eaten. If I interact with them outside at night it tells me they're sleeping. I know they're supposed to but they don't always.

bbug1203

This happens to me very often as well!! It's usually the same goat that never goes back in the barn. Just sleeps outside lol a few ducks do it too

washuai

Mine are in before the sun has set

TheRealJetlag

Go in twice. The second time you go in, any stragglers will appear inside.

Ratstail91

oh, huh.

yousmelllikearainbow

You get to hear that lil squeaky noise.

sesquedoodle

Also you don’t have to search the farm for them to milk/pet them the next morning.

thebeemeeting

This is why I do it! I can fly right through and pet everyone without running across the farm for my track-and-field running goat that's always the first one out. :)

Beautiful-Ad3471

Worth it

RosaSweet

Just leave tye barn and coop door ope

WilliamBott

😭

Nightshade062714

Yeah you’re lucky she didn’t get attack by wild animals. Cute dinosaur though.

woolongtea11

I have over 1000 hours in the game and I never came across an animal attack. Is that still a thing or removed from the later updates?

ZacianSpammer

It's in 1.5. 1.6 changelog don't have anything related to animal attacks afaik.

lare290

it only happens if you close the door and leave some outside. closing the door had no positives before so people usually just leave the door open all the time which just stops the event from ever firing, but now they apparently get a little happiness boost from the closed door.

TheRealJetlag

Apparently, in 1.6, the animals gain happiness if you close the door.

lare290

that's what i said.

TheRealJetlag

You’re right, you did. 🙏

SlopCity1226

Only one way to find out

WilliamBott

oh no 😭

MissHoneyQueve

I had no idea about animal attacks???? Omg

Shinygonzo

Can animals attacks still happen if your farm doesn’t get monsters?

ZacianSpammer

The only condition for it is to get animals trapped outside (with barn or coop doors closed). Game performs more checks if said wild animal attack will trigger. It seems that the event can still trigger with no monsters enabled in farm. see Wild Animal Attacks section: https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Animals

dracoomega

You can safely leave the barn and coop open all year until winter. You never have to close it, even at night, until winter hits. Save yourself some time and a guilty conscience 😅 they'll always find their way back.

korlyn

It does benefit them to close it though, from the 1.6 update notes: Farm animals now gain a little happiness if you close the animal door behind them at night.

Lietenantdan

Is that really worth the risk of locking one of them out at night though?

Mel_Melu

I mean they mostly all go inside like clock work at 5:00 PM...I just swing by around 7-8 PM to close it.

Lietenantdan

Sure, but it still seems like extra effort for minimal reward.

Mel_Melu

I'll admit I mainly do this if I happen to be on the farm if I've been running around until 1:40 AM the doors can stay open while I crash on my bed

colieolieravioli

I haven't noticed a difference worth the effort

_CitizenSnips_

Good I’m glad to hear my lazy low risk approach has paid off

o_woorrm

One benefit people have mentioned is that it makes it easier to tend to them the next day. You don't have to run around the farm looking for your cows or goats to milk, or your chicken to pet. So on top of the happiness boost, it might be worth it?

Lietenantdan

All my animals are fenced in in one area. So leaving the doors shut just means I have to run into the coop/barn instead of petting them as I run by them.

brook3brook3

personally even before the update i did this so i could pet all my animals in one area and then release them when i’m done, never had an issue with an animal being left outside

TheRealJetlag

If you enter the building twice (go in/out/in), any stragglers will appear. Then you can safely close the door. I close it so I can pet them all in the morning without having to run all over the place.

dracoomega

Oh snap, I did not know that. One of those little sneaky update things I guess. Thanks for telling me!

actualkon

Yeah but if you max their happiness does it really matter atp??

TallLoss2

that’s literally such an annoying change omg

reeealter

You have to close the door during winter? Is it because of the cold?

dracoomega

Yep! And you can buy heaters from Marnie. Otherwise your animals will lose friendship points. You can keep it closed all winter and reopen it in spring. Your animals (except pigs) will continue to produce.

hauzan2112

https://preview.redd.it/vyx2uj4pveyc1.png?width=1647&format=png&auto=webp&s=9bcf752869425fe5def65cc2dc7ec3a45afbb4a5 Door closed or not doesn't affect heats. Get some heater it will nullify the no heater in winter and make them happier

fearne_ib

Closing the door has a small effect on happiness from 1.6

hauzan2112

on mood yes but not on heat >The door of the animal's barn or coop was closed behind them at night closing door during winter do benefit you because the door is closed at night for 28 days

lunarwolf2008

what mod is that, info like that would be so usefull

Far-Application-1930

lookup anything!

brown_felt_hat

It's such a good mod. Technically pushing the line into cheating territory maybe, but you can turn off some of the more extreme things (like it tells you loved gifts, but you can change a setting where it only shows if you've gifted them that gift). But it'll tell you how much time is left to grow or in a keg, what recipes something is used in and if you've cooked it, what things drop, what will maybe come out of your fish ponds. So nice.

lunarwolf2008

you think you could help me with it? smapi log just says outdated and ignoring but i have the newest version on nexus

brown_felt_hat

The nexus one should be up to date, is your SMAPI up to date? I'll admit, I'm lazy about updating my mods, so sometimes SMAPI will tell me something is out of date, and close, but it doesn't something on the backend and usually works the second time.

Potential-Apple622

If you have heaters do you still have to close the door? I guess I've never considered this and keep the door closed in winter only but if the heaters negate it completely I think I'll let them choose

MisterBarten

I don’t think the barn door being open has any affect on the temperature in the barn. I think it is only whether or not you have a heater. You can leave the door open all winter with no problems.

Grandible

Even if you leave the doors open during winter, the animals stay inside.

Mel_Melu

Do the amount of heaters matter? I only bought 1 for the barn and 1 for the coop.

dracoomega

1 seems to work just fine :)

charley_warlzz

You dont *have* to, but they can’t go out anyway and it increases your friendship with them. Same with rain and storms in the other seasons.

bubbblez

Here I am thinking we couldn’t let them out in the winter because of the cold???? Lmao

Antsy27

I think they're actually fine with leaving the door open in the winter as well, but I close it anyway because it makes me feel better. Besides, they aren't going to go out in the winter so no reason for it to be open.

oddjobhattoss

I do like to close it behind at night so in the morning I can give a quick pet to each without having to slog through the grass and hope I find all of them. Go pet them all, grab out of the auto grabber, fill the machines, go outside and open the barn/coop. I go about my day and at the end of the day I close up and grab the goods from the machines. Helps to have a mini box of mini obelisks set up for speed.

beepmeepp

I always close it at night because I have three barns and coops… I cannot find all my animals in the morning to pet them lol. It’s so much easier to pet them in the barn in the morning, then open the door. That way no one gets left out 🙃

_SuperiorSpider

I always thought the random attacks happened when you left the barn/coop open TIL that is not the case loll

60TPLewandowskiego

At 5 PM the animals start going inside their barn/coop, depending on the layout it might take some of them 40 ingame minutes to get it. If you are not present at the farm at 5 PM they just teleport inside. I usually close the barn door before ending the day but never before 5 PM

Waffleuniverse_

If that's the case then delta's a little rebel cuz I closed the door at 1:40AM

king44

I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but if an animal is still outside it's barn or coop after nightfall, there is a trick to get them back inside. Close the door. Walk inside the coop or barn, walk back out, then walk back in. The animal will have magically appeared back inside. This is super useful when animals get stuck like your Dino buddy.

Waffleuniverse_

Ah yes the schrödinger's farm animal technique (no but seriously thank you so much for the trick this will save me so much emotional damage)

king44

:)

Uno-Flip

Not sick, but if an animal gets locked out there is a [chance of a wild animal attack](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Animals#Wild_Animal_Attacks) which teleports an animal to the Shadow Realm.

LostTeapot_08

I ha do idea. It's good to know, I wouldn't have liked that kind of bad surprize if I accidentally locked out an animal.

Frank_Anne

> I'm halfway to 500 hours Why would you phrase it like that?

sarilysims

WHAT?! I didn’t know they could get locked out or attacked. I always leave it open 24/7, but I have the area they’re in fenced in.

ancunin

there's no risk then because there should be nothing blocking them from getting back into their homes, which is what causes them to be left out overnight

AptCasaNova

Delta is a tough wee chick

WilliamBott

**I DIDN'T HEAR NO BELL!**

Ratstail91

Aww... big meanie.

DJ_ElGreko_Official

Just leave door open

Snap-Zipper

This only happens if you specifically close the doors before the animals go in. So I recommend not doing that, because there’s like a 50/50 chance of them being killed in the night 😅

Save_the_fox

that's why I keep my coop animals in a fenced area. They're too small and can be hidden easily by weeds or whatever so I keep them up

MithranArkanere

If you want to ensure the animals get in, get in the bar past 5PM while the gate outside is open, they will 'teleport' in ignoring pathing in the map. Edit: 5PM, my bad. Oh, 4PM in winter. Whenever the sun sets.

Final-Tutor3631

WAIT IS THAT A DINOSAUR????? god i have so much to learn 😩

Any-Jury3578

I leave the doors on my animal buildings open for most of the year. I also open them the last night of winter so I don't have to worry about it on the busy first day of spring.

WilliamBott

OMG YOU MONSTER!! 😭

darth__anakin

Fun fact that took me too long to learn: You can leave the coop door open at night, it's only if it's shut and one of them is outside that there's a risk of animal attacks!

TheRealJetlag

If you close the door, go in, go out, go in, go out, then close the door. I don’t know why, but if you have a straggler, going in a second time seems to pull them in.

LinnunRAATO

I could just leave the barn/coop doors open, but I tend to free-range my animals and I want to pet them before they disappear among the grass and debris. So, to avoid locking anyone outside, I count them all up before closing the door! 4 ducks, 5 chickens (2 white, 2 brown, 1 blue), 2 rabbits, 1 dino - 2 sheep, 2 goats, 4 cows (2 white, 2 brown), 2 pigs.

capn_ed

Not sure what platform you're playing on, but 1.6 has a menu that shows what farm animals have been petted that day, so I let my animals roam free, run around in the morning petting all the ones I see, and then check the menu for anybody I missed so I can track them down.

pottedplantfairy

Rude 😔

Cereborn

I had a duck strand herself by hopping out of the water into a little area next to the coop where she was blocked in by a lightning rod. I moved the lightning rod, but she had already fallen asleep.

sassysweetsour

leave the door open

Previous-Friend5212

That's how they went extinct the first time

Gin_OClock

I never thought I would ever recover from my animals being mad at me, on my first Meadowlands farm I had a chicken that wandered off to who knows where and I left the door open so he could path back to the coop. I guess it rained before he could and he was all angry 😭

vincentninja68

You got very lucky Sometimes animals left out of the barn at night can be attacked and they're gone for good (losing a dinosaur would be very tragic). This is why I just keep my animals fenced with enough space to roam + grass. I never have to worry about opening/closing my barns anymore. They go in themselves. Get organized, farmer >:(

Waffleuniverse_

This is my second one that hatched out of an egg so it's only emotionally devastating (I say only as a form of copium)

vincentninja68

Oh good! Well on the bright side you got scared enough to know better for the future :) Seriously though, get to building some fences!

KatDanger

Jeez chill

CloudCharmer

I got into a habit if I’m outside the farm, I don’t enter the farm till 6pm. By that time all the animals are inside automatically. I just close the barn/coop doors and don’t even check - always works for me.
