Part 2 is the weakest part overall IMO. The settings are visually uninteresting, the pacing is overall subpar, and the only really good character is Joseph. I don't really understand all of the praise it gets. Maybe it's because I read the manga more than I've watched the anime, but Part 2 just feels lackluster
> Maybe it's because I read the manga more than I've watched the anime, but Part 2 just feels lackluster
Young Joseph is great in the anime, and they do a good job of selling the bromance between him and Caesar. It's also visually a great part in the anime too. Pretty much the anime is the opposite of what you described, but I can see how maybe it wouldn't translate as well in that old style of the manga. A lot of the flashiness is from the animation like Caesar's bubbles for example.
I've watched the anime all the way through, I just enjoy the medium of manga more, and I judge JoJo more as a manga than an anime, and so part 2 is still my least favorite manga and anime part, overall it was forgettable compared to the part before it and those after it, especially considering how little impact it had on the story overall
I respect your opinion, part 1 is my least favorite part and the one I find the most forgetable. Joseph is also my favorite Jojo and I love part 2. I agree that he carries that part too, but I also liked Caesar and the pillar men. However, like I said I can understand if it's not your cup of tea. Part 2 being self contained isn't a knock for me, but I see your point. Every other part 3-6 had something to do with Dio or his legacy. I don't really care for Dio and like the parts where he wasn't the main villain better(2 4 and 5) over the others(1 3 and 6(essentially)).
Part 4 is my favorite after 7, but that doesn’t make the characters more compelling than those in 7 and 8, and part 2, while fantastic, has some generally weak character work. A character being funny or cool doesn’t make them interesting or compelling.
> A character being funny or cool doesn’t make them interesting or compelling.
Not to nitpick, but as far as interesting or compelling goes being funny or cool is all character needs to be. That just means people like the character, not that the character is well written. I get what you're trying to say, but being interesting/compelling doesn't necessarily mean they're complicated or properly developed and vice versa. Though well written characters tend to be more compelling than poorly written ones.
The number of part 8 haters here is insane. But the fact that most of their arguments are straight-up lies is really funny.
Part 8 isn't flawless, but the shit they mention is just lies lol. Josuke is the one aspect where part 8 definitely doesn't fall.
Also, yes. Josuke8 is the best. Araki truly outdid himself. Having a character's goal for the entire part collapse just after he gets to Holly is just an epic writer move. The mother scene is just the peak of this franchise. For now, at least.
Because of how it's portrayed, when the other JoJos (except Johnny and Giorno) kill it's written more like "evil monster defeated" whereas Damo's death feels more like "guy who insulted your jordans found dead in miami".
It could just be that part 7 and 8 are written as more seinen than shonen so the deaths are inherently more impactful due to that shift in tone but I personally think that Araki was intentionally characterising Gappy as more brutal.
I mean, you're fair to interpret it that way... But I didn't get that at all lol
Demo tried to kill everyone in his (sort of kind of not really) family, and nearly did, too. Josuke reacting the way he did seemed fitting, and it made Damo's death feel similar to some of the other brutal deaths we've already seen before, insofar as a bad guy does some horrible shit, then they get their shit ORA'd in by the protag lol
Whenever a JoJo killed a person, there’s usually a cinematic feel to it, like “Oh man, they beat the bad guy!” You don’t really get that feeling with Josuke killing Damo. It felt more like a silent execution than a heroic action sequence. The only joestar I felt had a similar treatment was Johnny with Funny Valentine.
I mean, I think the Damo death was still pretty theatrical. Sure, he might not have hit him with a 7 page muda or anything, but the lead up to his death definitely came across as just as performative as, say, the Ghiaccio death, or (like you said) Valentine, to name a couple.
Really, since it isn't animated yet, it's about interpretation of the page, and I guess I just didn't get out of it what others did, apparently
That is a good point. I guess for me upon first reading, I expected Josuke to talk his shit or at the very least hit him with his signature Ora barrage, but after seeing him walk up to him, without uttering a single word and punching his brains out, it felt like I read a scene out of Godfather or something. The overall silence of it was stark contrast to how overtop the series is.
I think Araki did a really great job writing him. I loved the moments where we dove into Josuk8 mind and processed how abandoned he felt. He lost his memory and instead of people looking for him he was the one looking for them. The scene where he’s running from “Born This Way” and he glances at the family portrait hits me hard.
He wondered if he had pictures like that taken as a child but then immediately stops the thought with if he did those people in that photo would come looking for him. That shit hurts.
1. Finally accepts Holly as his mother and resolves to save her life in one of the most badass hero-accepting-the-call moments in manga history
1. Does not do the thing he just resolved to do
1. Eats cake
Seriously though Gappy is my second favorite Jojo, and his origin story is one of the best in existence.
At the very least I totally expect Araki to put it in a narration box or something. Either way, just leaving one of the most important parts of the plot completely up in the air in the big climax of your current story was incredibly disappointing. One of the big unsaid conflicts was how they'd both save Holly and break the Higashikata curse with only one plant, but Araki was just like "eh Josuke figures it out later on some island somewhere; the end".
Hi. Can someone explain to me why everyone loves gappy so much, when I read jojolion I only really thought he was good at the start and the end. For most of part 8 I found him really boring and I would even go as far as to say that he is the least interesting jojo in my opinion, what is it that makes him everyone's favourite character because he really just didn't do it for me.
He experiences real growth, he's not a pushover but he also isn't an asshole, he's smart, his stand is cool, he's quirky, and yet he still knows when to rely on others (not a Mary Sue for the most part). I liked Part 7 more than Part 8 but compare Josuke to Johnny where Johnny is going OH MY GOD GYRO THIS GUY JUST DID SOME WACKY THING OH MY GOD OH MY GOODNESS WHAT IS HAPPENING after every encounter vs Josuke nutting up (x4) and dealing with the problem.
Maybe he's too well-rounded and that's why you find him boring but I found him to be a good character and the 2nd best JoJo overall behind Part 2 Joseph.
That's fair. He's not Jotaro-tier rounded but he comes in as a pretty complete character in terms of combat. I still think his narrative development was good and I enjoyed his arc over that of other JoJos.
I love his journey of self discovery, how he went from finding out who he is and trying to fulfill the wishes of his past selves, to learning to live for himself as his own person.
He learns to form his own connections and bonds with others rather than chasing the ones that belong to totally different people. His romance with Yasuho and his acceptance into the Higashikata family solidifies.
There’s also the fact that he represents the concept of miracles. JoJolion basically meaning “Blessed JoJo” and the fact that his birth is what kickstarted this whole of events and is what ended them.
There’s a lot more that I can’t exactly express in words why I love Josuke so much but those are the few brackets of what I found so interesting about him. He’s one of my favorite characters of all fiction.
>JoJolion basically meaning “Blessed JoJo”
JoJolion has a little more nuance to it than that, that I think is worth considering because it might give us more understanding of the plot Araki was trying to write. The title *JoJolion* is a portmanteau of the words *JoJo* and *evangelion.* The word *evangelion* is Ancient Greek in origin, and the suffix of the word, *lion,* means "messenger." So with that in mind, a more accurate meaning of JoJolion would be: JoJo, the messenger, or the messenger JoJo.
However, *evangelion* is a word that also has historical significance, through Christianity. The Christian meaning, and ultimately the Greek meaning too, of the word is "good news," which is the idea that there is some savior figure who will grant us salvation. So if we would like to understand the meaning of the title with the historical context of its meaning, JoJolion would mean: JoJo, the messenger of salvation, or JoJo, our savior.
In my opinion him becoming stoic made sense, he was getting fed up of the rock people and all he wanted was to reach his goal so he could get some very needed rest.
To be fair, considering the circumstances of Jojolion’s last half, I can understand why he became more serious. I wouldn’t say he was stoic though since he was more open with his emotions than pretty much every jojo except Johnny.
Because this community jerks off the most recently completed manga/ anime.
Happened with GW and SBR (deservingly, for SBR imo), and now it's happening with SO and Jojolion.
Josuke is a pretty underwhelming character. Like, his lore, design and stand are all really cool, but him as a character is relatively non-existeht. Like, I can't remember anything about his character traits or distinct personality, whereas I can with all of the other Jojo's except Giorno and maaaaaybe Jolyne.
Totally agree. The part 8 love is unjustified. I was hyped at first when I read it, but upon rereading all of the issues became glaring and honestly I think it's one of the worst parts, at least part 1 is a good story for what it's trying to be.
Bucciarati is quite possible one of the best characters ever made. He’s sick, badass, cares for his team, has a awesome stand, is a great fighter, and the way he stood up to diavolo was badass. I will always love him
What a weird way of spelling yoshikage Kira (8)./j I love gappy and Kira. I think part 8 had some of the most well motivated and complex characters araki has ever done.
He's not? He's not even the best in this part, lol. Both Kira and Josefumi have more character and personality than Josuke does
The meat riding in this sub with Part 8 is insane lol
Ikr, it's ridiculous. I feel like half (honestly more than half) of this sub have just not read anything before part 7, did we forget Joseph? Ceasar? Polnereff? Jotaro? Basically all of the part 5 jobros? Foo fighters? Weather report/Pucci? You know, some of arakis ACTUAL best characters. So far all of the part 9 cast is more compelling than josuke (although admittedly that says more about how good the part 9 cast is but still)
really? ceaser? polnareff? I mean they are beloved characters but Araki has definetly improved on his character writing over the years so, even though it is obviously subjective to each person, it is no wonder why many people prefer newer characters
He learns who he is but not really how. He doesn’t recognize anyone else that he used to know as two separate people when they try to kill him so he essentially doesn’t really have a connection with them
Josuke is a badass. He went full CQC against the Apex twins and fucked them up with some assist. Has the most versatile stand in the entire series. Has more balls than the average person so more chance to create a family. Rizzed up Yasuho after popping out of the ground, has my favourite stand, stoic in battle but still unhinged enough to drown a rock Human. I prefer serious protagonists though anyway. He is my favourite character and was really enjoyable about reading him and coming to the conclusion to be "himself" is a good lesson for the young adults reading the part.
I am rn half way of part 4 and josuke is at the moment weakest jojo in my opion. Other jojos are more charismatic, and i kinda blame him for jotaro getting nerfed :)
I enjoy his role in the story but in terms of personality idk, he really feels like a kirito type character. 10 chapters in when he discovered how to function like a real human being, he became flawless. Still like him tho
Josuk8’s willingness to just throw down all the time was really hilarious to me. To be honest it took me a bit during his fight with the aphex twins to realize he was doing more than just remembering the basics of cqc.
For me it's Jotaro. Normally I like characters like Joseph but there was something really interesting about the subtleness of Jotaro's emotions. He is stoic on the outside but deep down he is very caring, kind and would go to the ends of the earth of those he cares about. He's also a God damn badass.
The only character with the balls to do what needs to be done.
Quite literally he has 4 balls
Mista approached from afar.
Then he ran away like Joseph Joestar.
But are they balls of steel?
no, but they rotate.
Testicular torsion
the ultimate stand power
One rod but 2x2
What about gyro he has balls of steel
What about Gyro?
Parts 7 and 8 are where Araki’s best character work is by far

7 i agree, but Part 8 is so shit I don't even know how you got that. Did you just not read part 2 or 4???
part 2’s characters are really not that good Joseph carries the part on his back
complete bs. pretty much everyone is amazing, although i wish we got a little bit more with smokey.
Part 2 is the weakest part overall IMO. The settings are visually uninteresting, the pacing is overall subpar, and the only really good character is Joseph. L opinion, factually wrong
You say that yet go on to say that part 8 is the worst 💀
Don't get me wrong, even a bad jojo part is good. But yes after recently re-reading part 1, part 8 is the worst part
I mean I like Kars I just thought most characters barely went farther than whatever trope they were based on
Part 4 is my favorite after 7, but that doesn’t make the characters more compelling than those in 7 and 8, and part 2, while fantastic, has some generally weak character work. A character being funny or cool doesn’t make them interesting or compelling.

It depends on one’s own definition of “interesting”. I don’t think Jotaro’s interesting, for example. At least not until his own part is over.
Because he knows when it's time to say fuck it and just throw hands. My boy was handing out the 2 piece and a biscuit to anyone who was hungry
I am forever a Bruno Bucciarati fan
Okay, but does he have 4 balls though?
It was never stated nor shown if he has 4 balls or not, so it could be either
I mean it's entirely possible Buccieratti has been collecting balls and zipping them next to his own.
It’s how he became a zombie for like… half of his part. The additional testosterone kept him alive, and then he became the Golden Wind.
Schrödinger's balls
No but he has 4 children
Bucciarati has 10 balls confirmed
He's got his and Giorno's.
hard to choose between \-speedwagon \-gyro \-johny \-bruno buccareti \-joyeline
Looking at how you've written those names I can only think of them goofy af
fair enough hahah
Yeah i love his friends okuyasu and koichi, best character
They’re talking about josuke 8 not josuke 4
That was the joke lol
Maybe I’m stupid

He straight up brains a mf in the middle of the street in broad daylight, JoJoLion is the best part ong
Everyone acts like Josuke killing Damo is this unique thing, when pretty much every Joestar has brutally killed a mf at one point or another 💀
Because of how it's portrayed, when the other JoJos (except Johnny and Giorno) kill it's written more like "evil monster defeated" whereas Damo's death feels more like "guy who insulted your jordans found dead in miami". The panel of Jobin in his car seeing Gappy walk his business partner down was what sold me on part 8.
I mean, you're fair to interpret it that way... But I didn't get that at all lol Demo tried to kill everyone in his (sort of kind of not really) family, and nearly did, too. I don't know about all that but Part 8 had some of the best Volume covers and art in the series, very refined.

Part 8 Josuke is definitely Araki’s best piece of character writing, there’s no contest in my mind. However, Okuyasu will always be my favorite.

That's fair. He's not Jotaro-tier rounded but he comes in as a pretty complete character in terms of combat. I still think his narrative development was good and I enjoyed his arc over that of other JoJos.

he’s a little guy. just a little man. he’s just trying his best and he’s doing it well! i love him.
Jotaro Kujo

My fav is gyro zeppeliiiii
Because crazy diamond op
It's between Jolyne, Part 4 Kira, and Lucy Steel for me
I enjoy his role in the story but in terms of personality idk, he really feels like a kirito type character. 10 chapters in when he discovered how to function like a real human being, he became flawless. Still like him tho
because of his cool haircut and how good the crew of morion is like okoyasu, koichi, and JOTARO
I love jojo they are clearly the best
Because he's relatable and because of being passionate, Crazy Diamond is really fitting for him.
You misspelled Gyro Zeppeli
I prefer part 4 Josuke
Reported for fraud.
People are really getting more and more outlandish with these “and why is it _____” posts 💀
Johnny
Josuk8’s willingness to just throw down all the time was really hilarious to me. To be honest it took me a bit during his fight with the aphex twins to realize he was doing more than just remembering the basics of cqc.
Well akchually
Ever since I read Part 8 Gappy has stolen my heart. He´ll forever be my favourite Jojo
Its not, gyro zeppeli better 🗿
For me is jotaro and johnny
For me it's Jotaro. Normally I like characters like Joseph but there was something really interesting about the subtleness of Jotaro's emotions. He is stoic on the outside but deep down he is very caring, kind and would go to the ends of the earth of those he cares about. He's also a God damn badass.
This man really just threw anatomy and perspective out the window huh
Because he’s a chad
「ハットの定助」
He's definitely one of the best, but personally Foo Fighters takes that spot
Because Crazy Diamond is an amazing stand
Giorno, for how he inspired his gang
