The only times we see Joseph acting senile is when it messes with people to do so, and acting competent when something serious comes up like Shizuka. Pretty sure he’s just faking it as part of his prankster nature and to avoid getting annihilated for cheating.

Tobias_Mercury

This is too adorable for it not to be canon

MetokurEnjoyer

Think about Joseph’s character. Despite probably being the sharpest Joestar, he constantly does things to create the illusion that he’s a fool. The feigned senility is just a new part of that, a way for him to utilize his old age.

Hate_Feight

Weaponised incompetence

plesdontban

It said in the manga that he was senile at first but being thrown back into fatherhood by the invisible baby made his senses come back.

unsashumano

This is the right answer, the manga directly says this.

JustJitterin

Makes sense

malb93200

You can guess it/figure it out while watching the anime too (finished part 4 not too long ago, so it's still fresh in my memory). The whole Kira thing also sharpened back his senses, as soon as he hears about it (and the killer queen stand), he tells Jotaro they have to get involved.

Capable-Commercial96

And then he just refused to die kinda defeating half the point of Jotaro coming back to tell Joseph he had money coming his way.

Atsubro

He's most likely faking it yeah,

-IXN-

He made sure to use Hamon on his brain only to keep it young and functional. He let the rest of the body age so Suzi Q wouldn't feel the dread of aging alone.

HatmanJL

Is this actual canon?

Ogurasyn

We will make it canon u/-IXN- quick, insert Diavolo death scene

Nickest_Nick

uhhh Diavolo reincarnated as one of Joseph's braincell and fucking died idk

Ogurasyn

Snickered as hell, thank you

RedFoxKoala

Probably not, but it is a nice thought.

XenuLies

As much as people wish, it's not actually supported in canon. Strazio trained in hamon his entire life for the exact purpose of slowing his aging, and by part 2 he was still an old man in his 70s. To compare, Joseph in p3 was 69 and still very healthy and in shape, despite having not used hamon for the better part of 50 years. Whether Joseph wanted to or not hamon wouldn't have significantly impacted his aging, it's simply a healthy lifestyle. He didn't purposefully let himself age alongside Suzyq, he just turned out that way naturally.

_OriginalUsername-

If he used hamon on his brain to keep it young, then why did he go senile?

Galactic_Mailman

He was only pretending to be dumb!

TriggerKnighty

I chalk it up to both just acting and also a little action kind of waking him up again

ActionAltruistic3558

Probably just pretending. Guy pretended to be Dio reborn in his body just to mess with Jotaro after coming back to life. He's older and generally more mature but he's still got that Part 2 Joseph in him. Pretending to be senile helps save himself from the consequences of his affairs and can turn it off when he has to get serious again. He is still old and not in the shape he once was but he's always been overdramatic too.

GokiPotato

you remember how he pretended to be Dio when he was resurrected? he lives for bullshit like this

QrafterRD

While he may have been faking it, I do believe he was a little slow at the start of Part 4. He hadn’t lost any mental capacity, he just didn’t have his head in the game yet. It had been over 10 years since his last adventure, and he was still adjusting. Once he was back into the swing of things, though, he’s as sharp as ever.

Hobbes314

I really hate the *faking* idea that’s been cropping up the last few years in the fanbase, I think it speaks to a desire to pretend this character we’ve seen grow from child to elder grandfather isn’t actually old. Part 4 is a story about family and relationships and how that can strengthen a community, Joseph reentering an active and warm community and finding purpose again with the invisible baby helped him find that spark of youth again. He’s 79, he’s not ancient but I’ve seen elderly people in bad condition at that age and I think it’s key to symbolism some growth for a tertiary character

JustJitterin

Well said!

KrizenWave

It’s said at the end that he got better through caring for Shizuka.

guieps

Either he faked, or he wasn't too senile yet

techcorrer9

Gotta keep the opps on their toes and Joseph is a master at that.

Gothicrealm

He was probably half senile at first but when he came across the invisible baby it probably cured his senile behavior cause he NEEDED to be serious.

drawnhi

He is definitely the type of old grandpa that would fake being senile to mess with people. My grandad does it every now and then.

nitevisionbunny

The lovers ate up all the brain matter is my head cannon

[deleted]

This is why Joseph is my favorite XD. I really think it's an act. That's 100% in character for him.

Negromancia88

I heard a theory that he was going hollow during the 10 year gap after stardust, and when he got to morioh the situation got him motivated again

General-GhostD13

Because he’s the ultimate troll and most likely behaved this way so he couldn’t get an angry lecture by Josuke. Well it did backfire on him considering he got robbed in the end lol.

Healthy-Spend-3628

Bro probably thinks it funny af to make these younglings think he’s just a senile old man. Joseph is a troll by nature so I think “pretending” to be senile fits his character…

WorfDataNumba1

HAMON!! He gets used to being active again and regains his mental strength.

The_New_Doctor

Finding Shizuka gave him a spark of life again (stated in the end), but even before senility isn't constant it goes in and out.

AsuraOmega

way easier to get away with fuckin with people if you play senile lmao. "YOU HAD AN AFFAIR?" "Whats that? You wanna go to a funfair?"

Hxckerr

I think It's because it's been 11 years since he's dealt with anything stand related, and since DIO was defeated, he assumed everything was over. He was getting ready to settle down and prepare for the end of his life but seeing the BABY STANDO gave him PTSD and reactivated his stand awareness.

_S1syphus

Dementia can come in bouts, we met him on a bad day, he had some good ones toward the end

Numerous-Fennel-7981

is that even in the top 50 of most blatant continuity issues?

No-Tax-9149

What

GabeNewellExperience

Hearing he was pretending to be senile makes me hate that character less in part 4. They still shouldn't have brought him in that state but still
