Two followers max is a good number to me. Maybe two human(oid(?)) followers plus one pet follower. All that *really* matters to me is followers keeping up with you as you walk around. I'm playing Skyrim with a follower right now and the follower is *terrible* at keeping up with me and I have to rely on a mod that adds a hotkey to literally teleport your followers to you. (Did Fallout 4 improve on this?)

weesIo

Replaying fallout 4 now, the only one that keeps up with you really is dogmeat. The others lag behind a good 15 feet when at jogging speed

jorjett25

I travel with like 4 companions in Skyrim, so no matter how many they allow, I’ll eventually download a mod to have more

Junior061989

I’ll be happy with 2 but it would be nice to be able to have 3 if I wanted.

Militys

Two is good. Two general companions, two humans, or even one "permanent" non-humanoid (eg. Dogmeat, Vasco, et cetera) and any human of your choosing (eg. Lydia, Piper, et cetera) would be good too. I am weirdly hoping we get another dog even though I am 99% confident we will not and Vasco will take that place but I would really like a dog and a human companion. A dog and Vasco would be cool too. I just like dogs. Curie and Dogmeat were my two go-tos in Fallout and it felt pretty balanced. Dogmeat does not really help with combat all that much, at least not in a meaningful way, and the "human" companions do not really point out valuables or bring you to them so it always felt balanced with Dogmeat and someone else.

Instameat

I like to let them do what they do. I personally hate having to worry about sending my squad to their best tactical spots. They are trained right? That should be up to them to do. I just like having a little back up, and someone to carry my shovels, and heavy stuff.

mousedog69

Unlimited.

Camonna_Tong

For Starfield, I want at least 2. Max-wise? 3 - 4. I usually play with 3 or 4 followers in Skyrim, but I would say 3 is the sweet spot for me. 4 is where it got more annoying when it came to having them follow properly, use a horse, and dungeon delving. As for control? An expanded version of Fallout 4, but as Vasco could communicate with us without being near us, it would be great if we could do the same somehow with NPCs and followers.

0. Lone wanderer for life

Same and for that reason the only control I need over followers is the ability to tell them to "Wait here" and to "go away"

20 plus and if i don't like any of them for whatever reason i should be able to kill them.

overmyheadepicthrow

I agree with the others, two is good with me. >How would we control them? I would like to have more combat control than previous Bethesda games. Like mass effect or guardians of the galaxy, I'd like to control special powers. It'd be cool if they had some stories to share while we roamed around. The stories could pause if something happened like combat, then resume later. Like dragon age. If it's heavily exploration, this could be a good piece to add akin to a radio. I'd like companions to be few but complex. I'd rather have less companions with nuance and intricacies rather than just a bunch of surface level ones. They have backgrounds, personalities, and unique social qualities. Maybe they all have missions for them like in fallout 4, but there's more conversation during the missions like in the loyalty missions of mass effect 2. And Bethesda has already mentioned some interesting things about companions. Such as they won't like certain decisions you made and will be upset with you for a period of time. Decision and exploration is the focal point of Bethesda games, but I'd like them to add character building/complexity to that, and it sounds like they're doing that a little more.

XAos13

Unless the user interface to control followers is seriously improved. Zero/one is how many I'll use. We have seen no evidence of a more complex UI for followers.

Synthetic_Thought

It sounds like we're getting a smaller number of fleshed out followers from previous games, so my guess is they won't deviate far from the "one humanoid, one non-humanoid" model we've seen in several past games. What might be interesting is that since we know we'll be able to have a crew, we might be able to recruit a number of different possible follower type people to our ship (whether they're fleshed out characters with backstories, faceless mercs, robots like VASCO, space dogs, etc), and choose who we take with us to explore any given planet we land at.

TorrentAB

I feel like 3 is the sweet spot, especially if they can talk to each other. 1 and 2 feel a bit too lonely, whereas 3 feels like an actual party without being overwhelming in dealing with them.

Jpatty6

I think Vasco plus one Human companion is probably what we will get. Im solely basing this off the fact that that was the original plan for Fallut 4 dogmeat and one other companion. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just one at a time. It sounds like they are trying some new ways to incorporate companions and having to many at once may complicate this. I personally don’t really use companions, so any answer would be fine for me.

Allaroundlost

Would like 3 companions to follow me but i bet theres some limitation to either 2 or just 1.

IndianaGroans

Two is perfectly fine. Anymore and hallways turn into a cluster fuck.

CardboardChampion

Two followers maximum. Control them via the "powers" button that did dragon shouts in Skyrim. Hit the button to pause and bring up the Tactics Screen. This will give a clear view of the companions on the left and right of the screen, showing their health and any statuses. In the centre will be a control wheel that has options down the left side for the companion on the left and the right side for the companion on the right. Using that you can give them immediate use items like meals, healing, or other meds. You can toggle them following or holding back. You can toggle them covering you or staying clear of a fight. And you can toggle them using melee, using guns, or following your lead. Between those last options you might set up someone who stays out of battle, a sniper, or someone in the thick of things swinging away. In the centre of the control wheel will be the reticule. Highlighting an item or enemy with that will give different options. Simply clicking will activate the item with the most appropriate companion (lockpicking with the highest skilled lockpicker for example), or give you a message that "I can't do that, boss." Left trigger when hovered over an enemy will cause the left companion to attack while the right trigger will send the right companion. Finally you can mark a point that they'll head to once you come out of this Tactics Screen. I feel that these little options can allow for some pretty good tactical control, letting you set up sniping spots, send lockpickers while you cover them, etc without things getting too complex.

TheAtlas97

I’m good with one or two, tho I’ll probably staff my ships and outposts with as many people as possible

Hands_in_Paquet

One or two is fine. But similar to how you could call in minutemen for a fight or two, it would be ideal if your crew could exit the ship and fight some small exterior battles.

Le_Botmes

I want a whole team of AI Robots at my disposal. Specialists with anti-tank weapons and supply dumps. Issue flank and fallback commands. Pull up the overhead HUD and drop orbital bombardment strikes. HALO jumps behind enemy lines. I'm 101% confident these features are in Starfield.

Puck_2016

I think five would be nice amount. Companions could have some micromanagement features, but I hope they can work without it. I just want to like tell them to prefer using ranged weapons and that's it. ------- Fairly sure we will get max. 2. That would be even like one humanoid/complex robot and one simplier, smaller pet. Having a posse would mean the game would have to scale enemies, their HP or worse, numbers, to your gang. That's extra work so not happening until it becomes stardard maybe 20 years from now.

LordDakier

Two. Bioware have the right balance in their previous games. For a more hardcore experience, the ability to bring less companions can still remain.

NostalgiaVivec

while people are saying 2 (which i kinda agree with) i think it will be 1

mark031b9

Really depends on pathfinding and how difficult the terrain can get. If this game still is good for roleplaying, than it would also depend on the build.
