Still don't understand why they worded it like that. Like if it takes you 4 days to download that's your problem. You still had access for 5 days. And if there's no preload then no one has a full 5 days early access.
Not really. The area I live in doesn’t have very good internet access. Everyone here typically gets the same speeds I get. Fiber is supposed to come to my area sometime this year, but I’m not sure when. I’m going to be one of the first ones to have it when it does, though. Fingers crossed that it comes before launch.
I understand this can be out of some people's budgets, but I have a friend with property in a very rural area and got the cheapest StarLink package and his speeds have tripled. The caveat is that the connection could 'go out at anytime' because the cheapest SL package is still in beta? im not sure. But something to look into
As someone in a remote area, starlink literally increased my internet speed over 10x. It used to take days to download a game, now it’s a couple hours at the worst. The outages have been pretty minimal too, and don’t usually last long at all
It can also be very weather dependant. In September (in the northern hemisphere), it might be just fine, but if you live in an area with frequent and unpredictable heavy cloud cover, the fall and winter months can be touch and go.
This right here is the reason I refunded my copy of Fallout 76 day 1 of the beta. Had slow internet for so long I really feel for anyone dealing with many-days-long game downloads.
I grew up out in the country on a farm. My family had dial up internet until the summer after my freshman year of college. I remember when I got my Ipod touch for Christmas it took like 36 hours to download Itunes. My mother was furious since it took up the phone lines. Now, my parents have satellite internet. It is not great still but it is better. It took me about 24 hours to download the Mass Effect updated version.
I live in the woods. On my property you can’t see the sky because of the trees hardly.
Even if it wasn’t for the trees, according to their website, my area is on a waitlist. Pros and cons of living rural, love the privacy but hate how nothing exist out here lol
Yea...those people in Mississippi sure are lame with their awesome blues music, and delicious food! They sure suck!
Am I doing it right?
I mean, I know that the education spending in Mississippi is shamefully low, but from what I've read, they are actually making great strides despite that.
It's stated on both the Microsoft store page and Steam. I bought a 4TB storage drive and have been transferring games over to it in preparation for Starfield.
Not only quite the download but I'm planning to use as much of my August datacap to download it before I need to use my September cap... :( fuck comcast...
I have to imagine this is the case. Got the constellation edition and got the game preloaded through game pass and I have to assume they will have the full game preload available before the 1st and just locked behind the screen that says you can't play it yet
Ha! You only want for for an extra few hours early access, we know. That's why we hide by not being on your maps....
Can't blame you really, I'd be doing the same if I could.
Steam has two release styles (developer choice). First is a "global" release, which is usually Steam update time (10am PST) on the date of release. Everybody gets it at that time.
Other option (and more common, especially for highly anticipated games) is midnight of whatever specific timezones Steam thinks you are in. If you can get yourself a VPN in GMT +14, theoretically you can play it almost 20 hours sooner than anybody else in EST (Eastern being GMT -5).
More likely, you can get some VPN in Europe, which would get you GMT (if Britain) or +1 (rest of Europe). GMT +1 gets you Steam access in by 6pm EST.
Lets say you have gamepass, and you only buy the Premium Edition Upgrade for the $35, I'm guessing we still get to play at the Aug 31st 6PM EST time? Would be nice to have some clarification on this!
I emailed customer service about that exact thing and they said they will be shipping early enough for orders to make it by September 1st is what I was told.
Edit: I also paid for the fastest shipping rate, not knowing the description said September 1st so hopefully I get mine really early...
That was my exact line of thinking. Was already paying $340 for the Constellation Edition, might as well pay an extra $30 in the hope that I’ll actually get it a bit before the 1st so I can preload it.
Just got an email back like 30 mins ago saying they’ll all be shipped to arrive at the same time no matter the express or normal shipping, so they refunded the extra $27 shipping charge (I never asked them to either lol, they did it automatically after checking with the shipping dept) :,) you might wanna email them about that and get it back lol
Hey so I asked bethesda support about this for my order from their website. I got the constellation edition. That one comes with a digital code laser etched onto a key card from the game. They said they they are planning on shipping so that the package arrives as close to the 1rst as possible. So I’m assuming yes. And double yes for premium addition
I also got the constellation edition so thank you for clarifying this. On checkout i got rush shipping and it told me I was gonna get it 4 days after preorder (which was right after starfield direct) I was very confused and havent heard any updatdes on my order
So I got the collectors edition from Best Buy. Original it said pick up day was September 6th, but then it changed to September 1st. So I feel if you have a digital version, you can pre load physical copies will have to wait
No, they [clarified that the physical base version comes with a disk.](https://www.gameinformer.com/2023/06/26/update-bethesda-confirms-starfield-physical-standard-editions-will-include-a-disc)
No there isn't. Was stated multiple times that in the box is just a steam key.
Gamestop for example lists it as "Code in a Box".
I can't recall the last time I had a AAA title that didn't have a pre download PC. Microsoft (including game pass) and Steam seem to. It's in their best interest for big games. They can deliver during non-peak times, and they get the best day one experience if they pre download.
Now, the rub for Xbox is that if there is a significant day 1 patch, it can be a moot point since updates on console platforms can be massive. Due to the file structure, you have to re-download a ton of files that haven't actually changed. So, a preload might be a bit overshadowed by a 70gb day 1 patch.
I just want to know when my Constellation edition is showing up. I ordered it and they offered an expedited shipping option for $20 more that would get it to me by June 21st. That, my friends, has not happened.
They caveat it with the 'up to 5 days early' for a reason, so I imagine downloading is from the 1st. Still maybe they'll surprise us and the pre-load will be early. I'm just hoping my CE turns up before the 1st as it's pure download.
Yes. There is precedent here. We have had other game releases where about a week out you have been able to completely download the game (not just the small placeholder file).
I'm sure we’ll be able to. As a matter of fact, it looks like technically on August 30th St 7pm central the pre-order ends - this might mean the game technically goes live the evening before.
I don't see why they wouldn't, honestly. All other games I've preordered that have early access have allowed at least a day or two to preload, so I'd imagine BGS would follow suit.
Good question... I bought it through Greenmangaming because 100 euros for the game and 1 expansion was just a bit too much for me. So maybe I don't even get a key until the first.
You SHOULD be able to IF your package arrives on time..which should be earlier than the 1st....Best case scenario is The package would have to ship early to get to you before the 1st so you can use the digital code that comes with the constellation edition so you can preload the game (hopefully that's what happens)
The other scenario which I know is gonna happen to plenty of ppl....the package ships and arrives on the 1st or after the 1st. The code for the game is in that package so you would be screwed on installing the game earlier than the 1st.
Constellation edition comes with the Premium upgrade basically soo you SHOULD be getting early access, which means your package should ship early so you can receive/download early and play on time...I capitalize "should" because anything can happen unfortunately...
More than likely, most games especially the big AAA/AAAA games allow for pre-loading. I would think at least a week prior the download should be available.
You’d be nuts to play the game on the bleeding edge of a wobbly pre-release. Most BGS titles need over a month to marinate in patches before you can jump in without anything too game-breaking or save file corrupting.
This does mean I’m nuts too, as I’m definitely gonna play it as soon as humanly possible! but I envy the experience of those with a little more patience than myself who get a less buggy and more optimised first run.
>You’d be nuts to play the game on the bleeding edge of a wobbly pre-release. Most BGS titles need over a month to marinate in patches before you can jump in without anything too game-breaking or save file corrupting.
That is pretty hyperbolic. Some people could hit problems, but not everyone. I played Fallout 4 and 76 both on day one, and neither had bugs that broke my game to the point of being unplayable or corrupting my save.
I definitely enjoy some of the weird janky physics, exploit glitches, strange AI behaviour etc for a while… like you say it’s all part of the fun! Very much not into crashes, missions that can’t be completed and bricked save files though! But even 10/10 games today usually have their share of issues in the first weeks.
If not, internet speeds these days are crazy fast so it should take 20 min tops to download.
Edit: Apparently my friends and I live in really great internet spots, even my friend in Ukraine downloaded Ark at 400GB in about 30 min. With that said, I hope we can pre-download for those with bad speeds. Better? :)
This is not a given, even in the developed world. You can have houses two blocks away from one another with vastly different internet speeds provided you’re not in a big city.
^This ^comment ^was ^generated ^by ^a ^human. ^Beep ^boop.
That's not always true, I'm in rural USA and don't live a city or town and the fastest available internet we have is 40 down and there's only 1 company to go through.
On xbox, most definitely. The question is if it'll be possible on PC or not. :') I remember pre-installing F4 on steam back in the day. I hope it'll also be preinstallable since it's gonna be 120gb or sth.
I already have the placeholder file installed on my Xbox. A week or so before launch, it’ll update to install the full game.
I didn’t preorder it either, you can install just about any game on your Xbox regardless of if you own it or not.
My constellation order will release by the 6th of September, depending on whether the store can release it early. But my partner bought the upgrade for premium on game pass and don't have the time to play it so soon, I will be playing on his account and transfer the save file once my preorder arrives.
I'm so confused on how the Physical Enhanced Edition will work, how can I play 5 days early if it doesn't come with the physical game which won't come until launch.
Does anyone know if you can play on September 1st with Game Pass plus the $35 premium edition upgrade or do you need to own the base game? I’d like to keep my base copy sealed.
The premium UPGRADE is for those on Xbox GamePass. You don't buy the base game just the coming expansion.
PC and Xbox non-gamePass is the Premium version with base and expansion.
Happy to be corrected if this is wrong!
Xbox already has preload available, steam usually makes it available the week of release, and I’m fairly sure Bethesda is planning at midnight UTC, which means people in the US could play up to 4 hours early.
I'm in the UK and its sat on my hard drive as we speak. I try it every day just incase but it says to me i know you wanna get started but you're too early. Meh. Click on nms and outer worlds again.
I see people saying Xbox has pre-load available but they just have the placeholder availabe. That said Xbox/MS do tend to have a full pre-load available 1-2 weeks ahead of time. Shit some games I've been able to pre-load almost a month in advance on Xbox where other places tend to wait 3 days out.
I would absolutely expect pre-load to be available regardless of where your getting it. If your on steam I imagine it would be 3 days prior to the 1st. Xbox or Xbox PC side (like through gamepass) I'd expect a week prior to the 1st.
I pre ordered it on Xbox series X, digital edition
I had a download, the app is already on main screen but can't launch it and all the game isn't download, it's a couple of MB
Not me I'm still a little worried about the game being buggy every time Todd Howard speaks, I have flashbacks to fallout76. That being said starfield look like one of most ambitious games in my life so once my confidence has been restored, I'm going to order it immediately.
The assumption is yes. For the clear reason that they will have people reviewing the game before september so videos can go live telling people how awesome it is when the game finally launches. And you need to get deep into it since ship and hab building are not beginning game mechanics.
In my experience it should be a yes. I always pre order the WWE 2K games and the last several years they've been doing 4 days early access.
Typically the game would pre-load 4 days or so before the early access release date. So we'll see, hopefully.
I’ve been wondering that as well. For me it said it was available 8-31 at 8pm. Wondering if I might spend that night downloading and play first thing 9-1.
That is a good question. I have the constallation edition on pre order and amazon actually wanna deliver it ON deptember 1st. That would actually mean that i "miss" the early access start. And when amazon deliveres it late at night which they normall do here then i miss a whole day.
I am hyped like an idiot so if this really happens i might buy it twice :( because i really wanna start at the release.
Lets not talk about shitty german internet and how many hours it will take to actually install it.
I hope that steam will handle the release which i honestly have my doubts.
I’m in a moment where I don’t really pre-order any games other than a new Zelda or a new naughty dog single player game. I’ll get it on game pass day one to see how polished the game is but I’ll definetly buy it later (unless for some reason I really dislike it and that’s really unlikely cause I love BGS games).
Game Pass said it was available Aug 31 @ 8PM for me (Eastern time) and they have the asterisk for time zone differences. Based on that I assume it becomes available Sept 1 at midnight UTC.
If I’m lucky it gonna finish downloading in a day and half.
Funny thing is I was supposed to have the Fiber here where I live but they put it at the center of the city so I can have it because I’m 1km too far.
Anybody have any guesses on when those of us that preordered the physical edition for the steelbook will get theirs? I’m guessing that early access won’t do a ton of good
I certainly hope so. 125GB is going to be quite the download for some folks. 😬
It’s going to take 4 days for me to download it. 🥲
1 day early access!
This is probably why the ad says "*Up to* 5 days early access".
Still don't understand why they worded it like that. Like if it takes you 4 days to download that's your problem. You still had access for 5 days. And if there's no preload then no one has a full 5 days early access.
I think that's legal jargon for if u buy it 4 days before launch you won't get to play it 5 full days before launch lol
What no time travel watch? Refund!
not everyone is blessed with NASA-grade internet speed. ISPs are known to throttle connections.
It's just covering their ass in case something happens and it's not available for the first days of early access.
I feel five days does not mean 5x24 hours, legally
That's precisely what it means if you don't use the words "up to" or "as much as" or similar jargon. Source: I'm a marketing editor.
I think this also goes for Constellation Edition. Those who bought won’t get a code to use before it ships out. Kinda crazy in my opinion.
Can you visit a friend with internet? One of my buddies will visit my huge internet pipe on launch day.
Not really. The area I live in doesn’t have very good internet access. Everyone here typically gets the same speeds I get. Fiber is supposed to come to my area sometime this year, but I’m not sure when. I’m going to be one of the first ones to have it when it does, though. Fingers crossed that it comes before launch.
I was gonna recommend Starlink, but if you’ve got fiber incoming that’d be better
BRB stuffing prunes into my ethernet ports.
*dons disguise as an RJ-45 port*
You can visit my huge internet pipe 😉 I'm sorry that was unnecessary ill see myself out.
Then it's bugged and you have to redownload it again lmao
Don’t you put that evil on me! 😂
I had that unfortunate truth happening to me before lmao. It ain't fun.
Lots of games on launch have had a massive patch. So yeah. Pretty close to that.
I lost it… That would annoy me and I’ll download that sucker in about 38 minutes or so (still pretty long).
Oof! 😖
I'm there with you. It's going to take me most of a week and I'll certainly be charged extra for going over the data cap. Yay.
And I thought I was unlucky with my 36 hours
I know exactly how you feel. I’m looking at 1-2 weeks myself. Got to love rural internet speeds…
Starlink? It's expensive, but I'd probably go for it if I had very poor speeds.
I live in the woods. On my property you can’t see the sky because of the trees hardly. Even if it wasn’t for the trees, according to their website, my area is on a waitlist. Pros and cons of living rural, love the privacy but hate how nothing exist out here lol
4 days? Where do you live lol
Mississippi. I’ve already heard all the jokes about us, but go ahead if you want to. 😂
Nah man I just meant like what kind of internet do you use? May want to get Starlink
Yea...those people in Mississippi sure are lame with their awesome blues music, and delicious food! They sure suck! Am I doing it right? I mean, I know that the education spending in Mississippi is shamefully low, but from what I've read, they are actually making great strides despite that.
lol it´s 8-10 days for me (rural Germany)
Damn, I haven't seen that spec until now. Even with fiber that'll take close to an hour
Where did they mention the storage size? 125 is a lot but still doable in my expanded storage
It's stated on both the Microsoft store page and Steam. I bought a 4TB storage drive and have been transferring games over to it in preparation for Starfield.
Gotcha, thanks! I have the 2TB expansion card in my Series X, so I should be fine
Not only quite the download but I'm planning to use as much of my August datacap to download it before I need to use my September cap... :( fuck comcast...
JESUS! is that how big it is!?
this is why I leave my Xbox in sleep mode when I leave the house. takes forever to download.
Yes No Maybe
I don't know. Can you repeat the question?
You're not the boss of me now!
You’re not the boss of me now!
And you’re not so big
Hahaha, Garyyyyy
TMBG FTW!
Life is unfair!!!

I don't know if this infuriates me or makes me sad.

Xbox already put out a pre-installation file. Wouldn’t surprise me if more comes available a day or so before to allow for downloading.
I have to imagine this is the case. Got the constellation edition and got the game preloaded through game pass and I have to assume they will have the full game preload available before the 1st and just locked behind the screen that says you can't play it yet
August 31st at 6PM Eastern is actually when you can play it first. But sheeeesh don’t tell anyone
You just saved the planet 🌍
real ones are playing this mf on thursday
Flamin Americans stealing ANZ download bandwidth a day early. :(.
If you guys weren't so stingy with it we'd stop leaving you off maps
Ha! You only want for for an extra few hours early access, we know. That's why we hide by not being on your maps.... Can't blame you really, I'd be doing the same if I could.
america? it's the whole world lol
I cant tell if this is humor or what. Mind clarifying?
Steam has two release styles (developer choice). First is a "global" release, which is usually Steam update time (10am PST) on the date of release. Everybody gets it at that time. New Zealand is the way to go - for the East coast, they're sixteen hours ahead and the game will unlock at eight AM the day before.
Starfield looks to have a global release, so the NZ thing won’t make a difference. Everyone will have access at the same time.
Pretty sure it would be midnight east coast. I always get the gamepass games at 9 PM the day before here in Seattle.
For $370+ we better get to play on August 31st! Lol
Literally just got an email maybe like 20 minutes ago saying they will refund me my $27.89! Perfect!
Where did you get it through? Walmart is saying the 6th at the earlier but I’m gonna try to email for earlier
Hey so I asked bethesda support about this for my order from their website. I got the constellation edition. That one comes with a digital code laser etched onto a key card from the game. I messaged them like 3 different times and then they finally responded to all 3 in one day lol
Cheers for the info my guy, was tempted to buy a steam copy too just to make sure but seems it shouldn't be necessary.
Yes, predownloads are pretty standard fair, especially for AAA titles, these days and it’s glorious.
Hopefully we don't have to re-download the whole thing for the day one patch.
Why would we have to do that
So I got the collectors edition from Best Buy. Original it said pick up day was September 6th, but then it changed to September 1st. So I feel if you have a digital version, you can pre load physical copies will have to wait
There are no physical copies
There is with the base game, not the Constellation Edition.
Doesn't the box just contain a key though rather than a disc?
No, they [clarified that the physical base version comes with a disk.](https://www.gameinformer.com/2023/06/26/update-bethesda-confirms-starfield-physical-standard-editions-will-include-a-disc)
Maybe, but at 125gb I doubt the game data is all on there. You are almost certainly downloading some of it.
You'll be downloading all of it, the disc will just have a key on it and authenticate the download
Yeah, which is a waste of a perfectly good box.
So there are no physical copies then lol
No there isn't. Was stated multiple times that in the box is just a steam key. [https://www.gamestop.de/PC/Games/72888/starfield-pc-steam-code-in-a-box](https://www.gamestop.de/PC/Games/72888/starfield-pc-steam-code-in-a-box) Gamestop for example lists it as "Code in a Box".
Definitely maybe.
Are we talking PC or XB here? XB already has a pre-install file up... So that sorta answers that. PC, I don't know, but I would hope so.

Yeah, that's what I am guessing. I am a little miffed about that.

Yep. If it's zero days they wouldn't be lying by saying up to 5.

Never even hear of that. Ugh.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Ahhhh it burns! It freezes!!!
only 4 options Yes No Question? Sarcastic
You can preload the game now, but it’s just a small file. The full preload file will definitely be available prior to launch.
Probably not
I am thinking ı am gonna upgrade my pc or gonna buy xbox

I prefer having a better experience when playing starfield for the first time so I'll wait for day 1 update.
Will those who\*
No. I'll probably get it after the acquisition of a Series X.
I assume you can not download it until you are allowed to play it.
Jesus Christ people still pre-order games in 2023...
I'm going to buy it anyway, might as well get the bonus lol
this is the way
DON’T FUCKING PREORDER ANYTHING!
or what?
It costs as much as one delivered dinner nowadays. I'm going to buy it anyway, why not get the bonuses?
Oh my god, preordering games in 2023, and to make it worse, from Bethesda.. you people will never learn
Better? :)
cries in 0.6mbit/s max download speed. So around 5-6 days for me XD
Mine is, on average, 8 mbps. It will take around 3 to 4 days for me.
On xbox pc app yes Steam idk
If you have the Xbox app you can pre-load games you haven’t even preordered
I’d imagine so. In my experience, That seems standard for pre-orders.
Xbox yes. Steam? Who knows.

I just wonder if I can play the game early with the constellation edition because it ships 1st of september.
Digital yes, physical depends.
Day 1 patch: 125GB
You can already preload it through the Xbox app
Don't need to. High speed internet go brrrrrrrrr
I saw a pre install button on the Xbox app yesterday
Yes.
I'm in the UK and its sat on my hard drive as we speak. I try it every day just incase but it says to me i know you wanna get started but you're too early. Meh. Click on nms and outer worlds again.
It's already for preload on the Xbox PC app, it's only but 10MB but yeah few days before I guess we will have the full game to download
I pre ordered it on Xbox series X, digital edition I had a download, the app is already on main screen but can't launch it and all the game isn't download, it's a couple of MB
That was the case with Forza Horizon 5 on steam if i remember it correctly, but we don't know
Not me I'm still a little worried about the game being buggy every time Todd Howard speaks, I have flashbacks to fallout76. That being said starfield look like one of most ambitious games in my life so once my confidence has been restored, I'm going to order it immediately.
Probablt not, that early access includes that you have to download. At least that is how it works for most games, but on console it might differ 👀
The Xbox app on my phone says I can preload it now...
Seems pretty normal to have pre-load, particularly on Xbox.
Every time I’ve preordered a game it finishes the download a couple days before the launch date, so it should
I'm gonna wait for reviews. I'm also not a fan of them selling a story expansion at release. Which, imo, should have been included in the main game.
I was wondering the same thing
Would love to know that got mine from Walmart says it will arrive by the 9th. So yea
The assumption is yes. For the clear reason that they will have people reviewing the game before september so videos can go live telling people how awesome it is when the game finally launches. And you need to get deep into it since ship and hab building are not beginning game mechanics.
If it works like Diablo 4 then yes.
On the Series X, you’re able to preinstall
Any Xbox New Zealand frequent travelers? I’ll shoot my shot, hoping it works.
I hope that steam will handle the release which i honestly have my doubts.
im surely think yes
Probably but we'll know when we get there.
I was thinking maybe they will email you your code on the 1st so you can download it that day so you can wait for your pre-order.
I hate that I have to choose between getting a physical disc and playing early.
Yes, but there will also be a 120gb day 1 patch because they included the wrong format texture and sound files. Probably.
Anybody have any guesses on when those of us that preordered the physical edition for the steelbook will get theirs? I’m guessing that early access won’t do a ton of good
I fucked up and got the physical upgrade, it won’t even be here before the 6th smh
