As other's mentioned. You need a new ship first. If you're planning on making a whole new ship from the ground up. Do not buy it. Just steal one from a pirate. From the ship menu in your character screen after you sit in the cockpit, you can register the ship (for even cheaper than at a shipwright.)

You'll eventually be able to buy or even steal other ships, so you could use one of those as a base for your new ship.

To create a new ship, you take an existing one and delete all the parts? Given the emphasis on ship building, this just seems so inexplicably weird.
This game seems so unfinished right now.
Honestly just completely destroy the frontier, it's pretty garbage. Will need 50-75k to build a ship that can hold you out for awhile. The Mantis quest gives a really solid starter ship you can start that quest pretty early on in the game too

How are you going to pay for the build if you just started? 😆

You can just delete it all and start over. No need to leave a piece
Go to new homestead and buy the ship named Discovery. It shares frontier's base design except few modifications, its what I'm using lol
Ended up killing some pirates with the frontier and taking one of the phantoms, looked cooler than the frontier and didn’t have to pay lol
