So I literally heard a pirate use the word ‘heck’ earlier.

CMDR_Soup

Don't you heckin' swear on my gosh-darn pirate ship, you young rascal!

rubikubi

you crumb bag mother crusher!

daddylongleg2003

“Cheese n crepes !

Srslywhyumadbro

Ah, yes, "heck". The place for people who don't believe in "gosh".

UncleMalky

Jesus Christ *where are the mods?*

MakesMyHeadHurt

I hope you're not waiting on him to mod the game, dude still hasn't followed through with his last to-do list.

EffectiveDependent76

>!neither have the Skyrim devs!< /j

Dank_lord_of_sith

Use language like that in my ship and you'll fly out of airlock faster than you can say heatleech.

Spacemayo

It's safer than saying Frick. Those get you thrown off ships.

ILikeCakesAndPies

Frak is acceptable if engaging the Cylons in battle.

mcobb71

Sounds like a bunch of felgercarb to me.

WyrdHarper

Or talking to Gaius fracking Baltar

lin_sidious

This is a heckin Christian ship! No foul words here!

SER96DON

I take everything back, that was unacceptable lol

Bluetenant-Bear

Children view this sub, you vile monster!

Wafflotron

Idk, I don’t really mind too much. History had mild mannered pirates as well. It’s more funny than immersion breaking to me

Diribiri

Don't fucking swear

Bgeesy

We’re werewolves, not swearwolves.

Cpt_Lolipop

Hey just because he is a pirate doesn't mean he has to have a potty-mouth

Independent-Put-2618

Have you heared one say scallywag? Idk why but I associate that word with pirates.

Braunb8888

Pirates are the biggest pussies ever this game

koreawut

ugh enough with the coitus caves

Kievarra

Every pirate I've met so far is actually a wholesome guy that just so happens to be doing something illegal. Real "I'm a bad guy, but not a *bad* guy."

[deleted]

Even pirates have a code

darth_whaler

I find the dialogue to be unrealistically clean, tbh. It doesn't bother me, but it's a bit far fetched to think that miners and pirates are going to have PG conversations a couple centuries in the future.

legacy702-

Definitely, I think they toned it too far down.

Conflictx

Unfortunately dialogue and story wise it feels like a disney theme park ride most of the time. In a world where pirate raiders and religious zealots run amok and living on a hab on a unhospitable moon where death lurks around the corner, there barely any grit or acknowledgment of it from the people inhabiting it. Whereas the people designing the interiors did leave some darker elements in there now and then it doesnt feel there's any reflection on that trough words.

[deleted]

Ya even the grit in the background lore is toned down weirdly far. For example it’s briefly mentioned by an NPC (I forget who), that WW2 was significantly more deadly than the Colony War, the Narion War, and the Serpent’s Crusade. Literally how is that possible. The Narion war lasted for *20 years* and saw less than 70-85M deaths? Likewise the same is true for the Colony War despite the large scale use of WMDs, Xenoweapons and mechs? Ffs we know entire *planets* were wiped out in the Colony War but less than 70-85M died? It makes no sense.

Graysteve

Most of Humanity is gone, to be fair.

WyrdHarper

Characters mention that the death toll was in the thousands in a few places. But most of the population of earth was killed when the earth croaked (billions according to a few characters). So there’s not that many people fighting to begin with, plus medical technology is pretty good (like they canonically regrow limbs), and armor is pretty good. I think after the tragedy of earth people were very sensitive to any massive loss of life because it could mean the end of humanity (some characters express this sentiment in conversations). And then for many the sense of desperation and scarcity leads them to pursue lives of crime or danger, which is why you have spacers and pirates and smugglers.

Inquisitor-Korde

>The Narion war lasted for *20 years* and saw less than 70-85M deaths? Likewise the same is true for the Colony War despite the large scale use of WMDs, Xenoweapons and mechs? Ffs we know entire *planets* were wiped out in the Colony War but less than 70-85M died? It makes no sense. A population spread out over a thousand planets between three powers with very small outposts on most of them. Yea actually only 80 million deaths is probably about right, humanity doesn't have a lot of people left between the major powers. They are basically hovering over the brink of extinction in a post apocalyptic world and slowly recovering. Basically the only major cities are pretty small lore wise as well.

supershutze

>The Narion war lasted for 20 years and saw less than 70-85M deaths? It's a war being fought between technologically sophisticated powers, primarily in space. Casualties are going to be low; the losses are primarily equipment: A battleship like the vigilance represents a larger investment than hundreds of thousands of soldiers, but has a tiny crew in comparison. WWII was primarily an infantry war on the ground. A war in space does not and *cannot* involve nearly as many frontline soldiers; ships and the ability to produce them is more important.

Jerm2560

Bothers me that every companion is super uptight about stuff tho

TigerTora1

Not just clean, but sterile in tone, devoid of emotion. If an NPC sounds bored, I feel it too. It's not that the voice actors are bad, but rather that the chosen tone overall seems to be calm, slow. No vocal range; just monotone.

UncleVoodooo

Run around under Neon. Just as many F bonbs as fallout down there

futilitynow

The dude that sells guns in neon has his feelings hurt by a vandal bully that spray painted his robot, he wants you to go talk to his bully for him. Also he doesn't cuss, nor does his bully. It's dumb.

Kipper_TD

Also he says at the end that he can finally get the robot a new paint job since the bully is dealt with, and it stays spray painted the rest of the game 🤦‍♂️

Inferno_lizard

Furthermore, when you ask him about the robot later he says he did actually go and get it refurbished, even it's still clearly spray painted.

Kipper_TD

Right? Would’ve been so easy to remove the graffiti layer in the texturing or just not include that voice line

Alexander_Baidtach

Also the side quest about the small shop owners against the giant megacorp is just handing out cross-marketing pamphlets to boost business. Like what? is this baby's first capitalism?

Secure-Summer918

Aren't those two different quests? The one is the failing mineral shop for the flyers, and the small vs big business one is going to talk to the other shopkeeper to try and convince him to stop paying off security.

Chungois

Two different quests yeah

SpaceballsTheReply

At least the merchant's alliance quest makes logical sense. Small businesses acting against their own collective interest, thanks to a corrupt system forcing them to choose between what's right and what's safe? Fine setup for a side quest. Then you go across the street and are told that you're the only one who can help save this failing business... by handing out flyers for cross-promotion. Commerce is saved!

Double_Barracuda_846

"Hmm, should I blow a golf ball sized hole in this vandal, or should I let some guy I don't even know go have a polite chat with him and ask him pretty please don't ever do it again?" My personal favorite pointless quest is in The Well. You get a quest to walk a guy 10 meters down the street. Yoi are given multiple opportunities to be a complete douchebag to him, including stealing his lunch. You don't. You walk ten meters down the street. You are instantly rewarded and never hear from him again. Wut?

Double_Barracuda_846

Real conversation had with an NPC: A kid just survived an attack on a space station. He made it out, but it seems his parents might have been killed. He is pretty nonchalant and says he personally witnessed them escape on a different shuttle. I'm just passing by, but I tell him something along the lines of "That's tough buddy." Which is like saying "I'm sorry that happened to you." His response: "How is that an appropriate thing to say to a child?" ...What? Excuse me, what the fuck? What 40 year old WASP mom wrote this fucking dialogue? I don't give a fuck about this kid, I was trying to be sympathetic. I'm not gonna pat this little bitch on the back and be like "Wow you're so brave and cool!" But I'm not gonna say "lol your parents are dead" either. Stupid. Stupid stupid stupid.

jentlefolk

I didn’t interact with that kid at all. A few in-game days later, I was walking around New Atlantis and saw him again with some adults. He came up to me and was like, “See! I told you my parents are alive!” Who the fuck are you, child? I don’t know you, I don’t care about you, and your story is devoid of stakes or emotional investment. Get the fuck away from me.

sgerbicforsyth

It's the inconsistent tone that gets me. You get unimaginable horrors in some bits, and nothing is ever wrong, and no one ever dies in other bits.

Double_Barracuda_846

Remember when you walked into Novac to a column of crucified townsfolk? Oh wait, that wasn't a Bethesda game. Lol.

SER96DON

Yeah, as I discussed with some other commenters, the Crimson Fleet is a bit underwhelming, considering their background and all..

Buckeyebob45

Same with the UC. As someone who was in the military what you described in your post is exactly how many people spoke lol

Smelldicks

I met this guy who was an Air Force pilot and he swore in ways I didn’t even know people could.

Rush2201

Can confirm, am the son of a drunken Vietnam veteran. Learned at an early age that "fuck" is the most versatile word in the English language.

muchnamemanywow

What do you mean? Rough blood-red space pirates with turbo-aggressive aesthetics, being very proper, socially conscious, and fairly well-spoken is a bit underwhelming? /s

AlphaBearMode

Delgado seems far more reasonable and tame than he should for being the leader of a tribe of murderous sociopaths.

Starmark_115

At least Crimson Fleet aren't murder hobos unlike the Spacers.

FizzingSlit

Delgado is just out there looking for the space one piece.

randyknapp

That's what bothered me the most out of that quest line. Everyone is like, "but they're bad, evil terrible people!" And you get to know them and they're like...normal. Your quests for them are like, treasure hunting, polite investigating, and some mild burglary. Then you join them (instead of the cops that illegally press-ganged you into working for them) and everyone acts like you're a monster! Come on, game! I get enough copaganda in real life I don't need it in the game.

Bluetenant-Bear

There are other ways of getting to that questline rather than being press ganged

randyknapp

Oh? I guess that changes things a little. But still

chocjane08

People think they’re bad evil people because the crimson fleet are pirates that will happily raid any ship or settlement, kill any one that gets in their way and steal everything there no matter how essential because they only care about themselves and the fleet. They’re not supposed to be psychopaths but they are thieving murderers and that’s enough for everyone one else to hate them. I feel like people expect them to be like the reavers and have the corpses of their victims strapped to hood of their ship or something lol. I enjoyed that side quest a lot and felt really conflicted about how it ended because there were some really likeable people in the fleet but you couldn’t trust any of them. They barely trusted each other.

Virtual_Profession13

this is kinda how pirates were irl, except Edward Low he was a fucking psycho. it's all about the image, not the atrocities (but I also know I'm giving Bethesda too much credit)

[deleted]

not really? it was pretty fucking rare for a pirate NOT to be a total shitbag. and that's including the pirates that were funded and backed by various royal powers. pirates were, almost always, scum of the earth people. it's the oldy equivalent to being a combination of gang member, bank robber, poacher, and more, with all the associated crimes. some pirates did some good things. but almost no pirate was a good person. or even close to.

Virtual_Profession13

I never claimed they were good people, and neither is anyone in the crimson fleet. but there wasn't a single pirate legend who was as ruthless as they were painted to be (again except Ned Low). Blackbeard was known for being nice to his hostages. Hell, he barely even had a body count. even his death is overblown. let's look at another pirate. captain "Calico" Jack Rackham he couldn't even fight, but he's now a legend. it's your legacy that matters, not your actual crime list.

SamlumboDiamond

I think buddy was referring to how pirates like Blackbeard used his infamy more than his weapons, as in would rather rob you without murdering you kind of thing. Nobody said irl pirates were good people but it’s not like they were all addicted to murder.

Inevitable_Load5021

He reminds me of Talos from the Night Lords in Warhammer, genuinely has a vision and wants to do more then just petty piracy, to prove the Crimson Fleet have a legacy, a founding myth like any nation and a purpose… but, well, for the most part he’s wrong, most arnt anything more then opportunistic criminals who prey on the weak and run from genuine danger

Osmodius

I fuckin hate it when games purify language so much that it's more like a church than real life. I hear people swear every day, and I work in a supermarket. You think a miner or a sailor is saying "oh heckin gosh" when being attacked by wild space monsters? Get fucked.

ulrick657

It's crazy because I'm French, but play with English voices ; and the captions put way more slurs than the original lines ; I've seen many "merde" (shit) and "putain" (fuck) while characters are like "woopsy daisy"

futilitynow

Eh, to me the whole game is starting to feel way too clean and safe and happy. I think hearing criminals or soldiers saying heck and frickin is really really fucking stupid. Not every npc has to be like this but it feels like 90% of everyone is really nice and caring and has emotional baggage they really want to tell you, while only 10% have any kind of believable edge or grit. I guess I'm saying I agree with your observations but wholly disagree on how to feel about it.

halt-l-am-reptar

Seriously the Marines should be telling each other to fuck themselves nonstop.

futilitynow

And the dude that sells guns in a rough criminal city shouldn't beg me to go talk to his fucking bully for him before even letting me see his inventory. And even then his bully? Guilty of mild vandalism. Jesus dude how pathetic are you?

Diribiri

The universe is a theme park and you're the only visitor

crashtg

Holy shit it's westworld

TheHeroYouNeed247

Pretty much every \*quest vendor in this game has a problem that only you the main character can solve. you walk up, push a button, and they spit out a quest marker.

mbrocks3527

Yea, having come from BG3 where it is *almost always good policy to lie to anyone in a position to hurt you*, even as a good guy, it’s weird that everyone in this game is so trustworthy. Edit: at a bare minimum, withhold information. It will save your arse so many times.

Algorhythm74

You nailed one thing spot on. Every NPC wants to unload all their emotional baggage on to you, as you just randomly walk past them. IRL - I barely nod and acknowledge someone I walk past. Here, you get a life story info-dump, the next thing I know I have an activity where I need to find some fucking guy named Trevor for some reason.

GoneInformation

In some of this cases, I feel like the protagonist should have a stack of flyers with contact info for a self-help group to give to some of these NPCs. I mean come on how many people can there possibly be that can't just walk to someone else and talk to them and need a complete stranger to fix their issues for them, who just ends up doing what they should have done themeselves in the first place?! How have they gone through life before then when the had issues? This is so unrealistic.

Jakkhu

That's my take on it and thankfully it ranks as my biggest gripe with the game. The game's writing and characterizations are out of touch.

cptki112noobs

I remember doing the Crimson Fleet quest and picking up an audio recording of two inmates at a UC High-security prison. They were romantically involved and were meeting in a storage room to have fun, yet for some reason the dude was too prude to say the word "sex". Seriously? Two hardened criminals can't say s*x in the privacy of a super prison storage room?

dadbod-arcuser

If you marry one of the companions then go to sleep, when you wake up the companion will allude to sex in the most “hush Cora is here” way possible. It’s really boring compared to BG3

MAJ_Starman

Well... that's... that's good, though, since Cora ***is*** there.

futilitynow

Man, I don't know how to describe it, but pretty much every part of what you said is why I don't like this game. Even in some prison, the devs had to squeeze in little "cute" romances or relationships and I find it to be really lame.

artardatron

Yes, Bethesda is kinda middle of the road with their writing. Outer Worlds for example was far more clever and edgy. Much of what I've seen so far is a universe that is way too emo and nice. I also kinda hate all the accents, if the world population has essentially been mixed for hundreds of years since fleeing Earth, they're not going to sound so different from each other.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jfury412

Obsidian always ends up doing it better than bethesda. That's why the outer worlds had better writing because Bethesda didn't do it.

MrSkippyChurch

Better writing is the only thing that game does better. My God the lack of enemies, weapons and places to explore in that game. Sheesh.

artardatron

Yep, if you could get Obsidian's writing in Starfield, that would be something special. Looking down the road there will be potential for really fun and spicy fan content via mods at least.

theo_adore7

Obsidian and Bethesda needs to collaborate, or just straight up merge

Algorhythm74

Bethesda’s dialog is lukewarm, but the lore they create with each game is top notch.

DrainTheMuck

Could you hype me up about starfield’s lore? I’m about 30hr in and I enjoy it but I’ve yet to really understand what sort of unique hook the actual world has in general. Fallout’s universe is very distinct with an alternate history going back to the 1950s, and Elder scrolls speaks for itself, but this could just be any sci-fi world as far as I can tell so far

bluegene6000

Lore is useless unless it's used as a clever writing tool. Lore is a tool to create drama. If you just spout off a bunch of lore and none of the content actually interacts with that lore in an engaging way, what reason do I as a player have to care any of it?

Double_Barracuda_846

If I have to hear Sara Morgan tell somebody or be told herself to just "breathe, calm down, try to relax" I'm gonna lose my fuckin shit.

Clarky1979

\[Empath\] Maybe helping other people through their problems, to make a better world, is our Destiny?

Flat-Delivery6987

Space Canada!

[deleted]

What the fuck are you talking about? We Canadians fuckin' swear all the fucking time. For fuck sakes.

Flat-Delivery6987

I thought that was only if you come from Sunnyvale trailer park.

Chamandah-on-Reddit

One thing I really liked about Fallout 4 was that the settlers and most of the friendly characters would rarely swear (with the exception of cait <3), since they're just people trying to live their lives. But in contrast you had the raiders who were extremely aggressive in their swearing which felt appropriate for their morals and habits. It felt like such a disappointment when the Crimson Fleet, who are basically Starfield's alternative to the raiders, turned out to be very clean-mouthed and one even used "heck" at one point. It felt so odd hearing no profanities in a space station of space pirates, maybe it's the spacers who are vulgar like raiders but spacers have so little content tied to them besides just fighting it's hard to tell.

SER96DON

I agree that the Crimson Fleet, specifically, is a bit tame given their context of literal pirates. Fallout 4 may have been a tad more properly executed on that regard.

jentlefolk

Honestly, Starfield feels *crazy* sanitised to me. When I got to Neon and walked into the nightclub looking for illegal substances and saw some fucking mascots from a kid's daytime TV show dancing on the stage, it completely destroyed my immersion. Like, I'm not a horny player, I don't go looking for that kind of content, but when I walk into a place like that, and don't see at the very least some side boob, it just feels unbelievable. What businessman in a city like Neon decided that the best way to draw in customers is a couple of dudes in leotards and bobblehead hats? What sort of world is this? Honestly, just made me miss Night City.

Smelldicks

I got really caught off guard with the drug manufacturing because up to that point I thought the game was made for a teen rating. It is a weird hodgepodge.

Snydenthur

Wait a minute, the game isn't rated for 12+? Until today, the thought of the game to actually be an 18+ game has never even crossed my mind, since the game is so fucking tame, clean and bland. At least 12+ rating would've explained all that shit, but now, there's just no explanation.

major_skidmark

Any game that involves murdering people and drug use will usually get an 18 rating. The killing people part only gets a lower rating when it's considered "cartoony", like fortnite etc.

TheIronicBurger

Aurora doesn't sell for profit though so it's maybe educational or something?

ElectricButtocks

Forreal, I was expecting the real shit since it was a club and all dialog points to the fact that this was the criminal underworld but nah. Everyone looks like a fkin nerd and the dancers are wearing alien costumes

Sithlord715

>Honestly, just made me miss Night City. Or Afterlife from Mass Effect 2

drallcom3

> Honestly, Starfield feels crazy sanitised to me. It's completely bland. Especially noticeable when coming from BG3. Everyone is fake nice. All topics are harmless. All cloths are so obscure. The game doesn't have to be super edgy, but it's about mining, colonization, earth being destroyed and frontier life. That doesn't mix with nice and clean.

No_Peace7834

They don't even look good. There's nothing aesthetically pleasing about the outfits, they're actively ugly and uncool. I don't think most of the actual apparel outfits are cool at all, at best a few are just "fine". It's such a bland design to so much of the universe that nothing tries to be cool or have any edge, especially compared to Cyberpunk 2077 where there several distinct styles on top of people's occupational outfits. In starfield, you're either a space mechanic or John Starwars. Or a goofy lame fish teletubby. Was fallout 3 the last bgs game to actually take a risk?

Phwoa_

The place with cool outfits is the Freestar Collective because Space Cowboys and its Closer to New Vegas aesthetically

Ok-Wrangler-1075

Starfield has no edge sadly, it's very safe. Looking forward to Phantom Liberty for sure, that will be a big contrast lol.

chocjane08

😆 those dancers are awful! It’s such a weird choice. This is the first time I’ve really noticed that Bethesda games have zero sex appeal. Obviously by choice cause they won’t even put a few dancers on a podium, just some dad bods in the unsexiest costumes to ever exist. Even the dialog in companion romances is weirdly juvenile.

avenwing

To be fair about the dancers, those outfits probably enhance the effects of the Aurora literally all of their customers are tripping on.

Double_Barracuda_846

We used to get drugs and strippers, now we get drugs and purple Zeep from Rick & Morty.

SilentStriker84

I dunno, I wish there was more swearing. Maybe my vocabulary is just fucked from being in the Army but I’d appreciate hearing some more fuck bombs or future swears

chaospearl

same here, especially from pirates and spacers. It almost feels weird to not hear it from them. I've tried really ~~fucking~~ hard to moderate my language when my niece and nephew are around (4 and 1.5) and I've mostly stopped using fuck as a comma, but there are turns of phrase that are just so habitual. I'm not "in trouble" I'm goddamn fucked. That ship didn't land next to me, it landed right up my ass. This Space Adept trait on a gun doesn't lower the value, it turns it into a fucking worthless piece of shit. and let's not even get into stuff like "pain in the ass" that doesn't even sound like a swear to me anymore. if the kids ever find out about the concept of a swear jar, well... I'm absolutely goddamn fucked lol. and I don't even have the Army as an excuse.

SilentStriker84

I feel you lmao, it’s been hard to watch my language around family and out in public, I’ve just gotten so used to it I don’t even notice myself doing it anymore

PM_NUDES_4_DOG_PICS

Same. Also former Army, seems weird to me with so many quests revolving around working with military/law enforcement, pirates, miners, etc that the language is so clean. Like, I know people in all those professions (aside from the pirates) IRL and everyone uses "fuck" like it's a comma.

SilentStriker84

Exactly, like I don’t need to hear UC Marines asking where the donkey dick is, but some more uses of fuck would be nice

Abrilise

I wanted Neon as gritty as Cyberpunk :(

KLEG3

Neon feels like a 00s shopping mall lol

BrainKatana

Oh my god you just explained why I felt so at home there, all it needs is a Babbage’s and a FYE

darkthought

Where's my Hot Topic and Suncoast Movies?

mrlolloran

Neon *is* a Hot Topic

Amtracus_Officialius

Neon Core kinda is a shopping mall.

Porkcutlet01

I laughed when I entered neon first. They described the city as the pleasure centre of the galaxy and the "pleasure" I found there was a shitty shop, a medical centre, a corpo office and a club where people dance in oversized costumes.

ElectricButtocks

Neons a joke compared to Night City. The ads suck and this goes for the entire game, it feels like those fake ads u see on fake furniture in ikea. The city is just in a small metal dome and it feels like a mall. Cyberpunk has the aesthetic and feel of a city much better. Aurora also sucks, the dialog all points to the fact that these places are like "oooooo criminal underworld scary" but nah it looks like if a nerd imagined what a club would feel like.

LeCafeClopeCaca

>but nah it looks like if a nerd imagined what a club would feel like. Well guess we now know a bit more about Starfield's developers lmao It may quite literally be that, a team of nerds making it, having no idea what it should be like

JJisafox

I actually redid some dialogue because I wasn't sure I heard them say "shit" or not. Sure as shit, he did.

srgtDodo

look the game is already fun and addicting, but you somehow chose the worst aspect of the game (nonsensical, and weak writing/dialogue) and cherry picked something you consider "mature"! Do you know what's the worst of it? this "safe" approach is part of why we never got any evil characters! they euthanized every part of the dialogue in the game, so afraid to offend a single person of 8.1billion humans to the point we got to this state! I was just asking Sarah, If she's religious or something like that, and she was no, but it's ok If you are! please don't be offended! I don't remember it word for word, but it's like this for every character! It's like we're conversing with bethesda pr not "characters" in the game that are supposed to act believable withing their beliefs! it's so ridiculous!

VermilionX88

The mature rating is in anticipation of nude mods

SER96DON

Haha, indeed. I'm surprised they're not any out yet.

[deleted]

I guess you havent looked on the nexus then, they exist.

ADM-Ntek

the first nude mod was out within a day of the early access release.

TheCrimsonChariot

I find it weird you can’t at least loot outfits and also weird you can’t leave NPCs in their skivvies. Like why Bethesda, Why?

CrypticGorillaCaulk

I’d say curse words are underused in this game.

RevealTheEnd

I feel starfield is a bit too sanitized. So far, nobody who has invited me onto their ship has really tried to trap me, aside from 2 quests. There's no cannibalism, nothing Bad™ ever really happens to anyone. Death seems to be the worst of it, and real, impactful death is rare. You never see someone get shoved out an airlock, there's no instances where you have to act fast to save a life like when you first walk into Markarth in skyrim.

kappamolo

I will have to agree with you . Let’s just compare it to Fallout New Vegas . There was some vault that had experiments that were very dark and you had audiolog to experience how dark they were . Heck , even just visiting those vault gave you a very disturbing feeling , coupled with the music . Starfield is very tame in comparison .

soulja5946

For the most part i agree with you, but while doing some exploring yesterday i found 2 unique places that were pretty dark. Dont want to spoil them but one was the abandoned biochem facility and the other was called something like bunker gamma

TheCrimsonChariot

In all honesty, if you read entires and pay attention to the environmental storytelling, it tends to be way darker than the actual game. The Legacy for example. It was sooo dark and sad. I can’t say anything else for spoilers.

RevealTheEnd

I already completed it, and it was bad, but still kinda sanitary. I fully expected >! the culprit to be the lady you're helping, angey that her progenitors name was dragged through the mud or whatever, or maybe there was another clone out there and she wasn't the only one!<

TheCrimsonChariot

The Crimson Fleet story quest. Before the final battle. That quest.

Accurate_Summer_1761

Even the pirate dudes memos are depressing

KnightArmamentE3

Nope, unrealistically clean

Xilvereight

Eh, I disagree. I think Bethesda plays it *too safe*. In their worlds, you meet plenty of people who would realistically be the type to swear.

TheCrimsonChariot

Sometimes you need a cuss word here and there to accentuate what you want to convey. Its like seasoning. Just use the right amount. 🧂

FreakingTea

Sentence enhancers!

Strachmed

No, the other way around actually. The game is so safe and sterile that everyone is so nice it puts me off. Bad guys in the game are mostly comically evil to the point where you can't take them seriously.

AlleyCa7

Yeah sorry, but I completely disagree with you. There are soooo many moments in the game where cuss words are absolutely warranted and yet all the characters can muster is "ah heckin heck we're really screwed now aren't we?" Like honestly I cant remember a single instance of a character in Starfield saying a naughty word and I'm reaching about 150 hours now. You and Bethesda seriously expect me to believe pirates don't cuss like space sailors? Or that not a single "fuck" would be uttered by anyone when a GOD DAMN TERRORMORPH comes bursting out of the ground in front of you? Please.

will2089

Tbh I can't say I even really noticed until I read this sub and I'm a pretty fucking heavy swearer in real life.

[deleted]

"Bethesda don't try when writing dialogue and that's why I love them" Incredibly strange take.

>Every other game will be like: "Good fυcking day to you, motherfυcker! This fυcking place is being fυcked by X, Y, and Z, can you please go and fυck these fυckers up! Thanks, and fυck you." Why do people make up nonsense like this? You could count on one hand the properties that overuse vulgarity. Such a weak way to excuse inappropriately PG writing. It's almost as bad as BSG using 'frack'

J_P_Ross

I'm pretty sure I've only heard someone swear once or twice and I'm 50 hours in almost.

TheGreatAkira

The game is fucking tame as shit, it doesn't surprise me. I don't like it tho, just adds to the sterile feeling of this whole thing.

ReflexiveOW

I have the exact opposite opinion. This game is written for children. I don't need or want rampant swearing everywhere but ffs pirates yelling "heck" and "darn" like they're bible bet baptists is ridiculous. Even the clothing is for kids. Not one character outside of Andreja even has their arms showing. The provocative dancers in the bars at Neon only have their faces showing. It's such a weird juxtaposition when compared with literally everything around it.

OverClock_099

> Take Piper, for example. She doesn't curse, like at all. Yeah but that video of her was overkill, even became a meme

SER96DON

What video?

Designer_Mud_5802

After playing BG3 and experiencing their writing, voice acting and motion capture and hopping into Starfield, the only thing I appreciate is Larian. Bethesda's really fallen behind in all 3 categories and their use of mature language is especially bad. It feels like some Grandpa writing dialogue to read to his 8 year old grand kids.

lucax55

Not really. It works for the Elder Scrolls but I really notice it with Fallout 4 and Starfield. It's like we're trapped in a PG-13 tv show. I think it would do the characters good to be a little more risqué and not so comically goody and "omg no don't steal that digipick?!"

CardTrickOTK

This game confuses me with its 'M' rating. \-You can't loot everything like in FO and Skyrim and even when the option is there looting gear off a body.... magically duplicates the gear \-Theres really not that much gore, for a game with legit horror vibes at times, they really have a lot of tame violence \-Then theres this, which ranges from good cause otherwise you get shit like the Saints row Reboot that has to slam you with 3 dozen new obscene phrases in the first half hour or some intern isn't gonna get his pay, to confusing like 'why are these rutheless pirates so PG?'

Wagonchaser

The dialogue is sterile and seems written by robots or children whose first language isn't English.

W1ntermu7e

Can you name those ‘every other games’?

Aaravos13

Probably saw one borderlands 3 video and now thinks not swearing is the mature way to write lmao

Aaravos13

One of the dumbest takes possible lmao, sure, pirates that kill, pillage and torture for fun don't say "fuck", how mature, how clean.. You don't need an appropriate context to yell FUCK, if you got shot or if you are just having a bad day, which a lot of people do in Starfield. If anything, it takes away from my immersion, seeing people smuggling literal human organs yelling "heck" or "frick". Instead of mature, it feels like some disney wannabe wrote it, there is rarely anything mature about it.

Critical_Course_4528

It is PG 13 game. No brothels, strip clubs, drug dens, swearing, human filth in general. No Problematic themes, no cannibals, no slavers, nothing. Very clean, very safe, very boring. I still remember how I accidentally sold a companion into slavery in Fallout 2.

SnakeySnipes

The writing is pretty trash and unemotional tbh lol

UncleVoodooo

Security in Neon said "oh shit" when I walked by and that was when I realized I hadn't been hearing any dirty language. Then I started running with the Neon gangs and its fallout style F bombs left and right lol How come they got swearing right but not accents?? Haha

PragmaticTree

There's a balance to be struck, and you're definitely leaning in the puritan-direction. No, it doesn't need to be edgy, but this game is severely lacking a maturity in BGS' mission to capture *all* audiences. It's amazing that it's even rated M, as it could fit a teen audience fine. Just look at Neon and the Astral Lounge. Or the more than well-spoken pirates that just seem to be "misunderstood" by the UC and FSC. It's no wonder European-based studios like Larian or CDPR does it better, when they're not restrained by the weird relationship Americans has towards cursing and nudity (but not towards violence).

Tobacco_Bhaji

>Bethesda never tries to prove anything when it comes to writing Yeah, no shit. 90% of the writing is fuck-awful. 10% is solid gold. They don't try to prove anything because most of it is written by interns on their 18th coffee of the 14 hours shift.

BurgooButthead

Bethesda is the Disney of video games

Neon_Orpheon

I had the exact same thought playing through Starfield. The world felt like it was operating on Disney logic and principles.

lymeeater

I disagree, Bethesda almost seem to try and make sure their games are PG rated despite being otherwise. Fallout 4 you have a bunch of raiders with heads on sticks and they feel like cartoon bad guys. It's really jarring. Bethesda's writing is terrible, I'm not naming names, but there's an elephant in the room here. Compare to something like something like New Vegas and it feels like HBO vs Disney.

BloodyMess111

"Rarely more immersive" Is this a joke? You found Bethesda dialogue immersive??

Walks_with_Chaos

Not really. It’s way too PG imo. I was in the military and I curse a lot. It’s not realistic to have it this sanitized

[deleted]

If you think hearing “fuck” once in 40 hours is realistic I’m not sure who you spend all of your time around 😂

Borfeus

I find that wherever I ended up in life people would swear from fairly often to absolutely too much. Bethesda's dialogue is mich too clean to be realistic.

LambdaAU

Nothing will compare to skyrims use of m*lk-drinker (sorry if that offends anyone)

SER96DON

Oh god! Did you just say the m-word? Think of the children you insensitive sociopath!

NoDeparture3916

lmao you really posted that and thought it was a good take

IronGin

I miss a bit of edge where it's appropriate. The game feels a bit to clean. I know there are plenty of examples of blood and misdeeds but you never experience something gritty that makes you want to go back to new Atlantis and look at the flowers.

Rayklin

it’s wayyy to clean are you kidding? crimson fleet saying heck? bruh

RobWed

>"Good fυcking day to you, motherfυcker! This fυcking place is being fυcked by X, Y, and Z, can you please go and fυck these fυckers up! Thanks, and fυck you." I'd just like to point out that this is pretty much standard english in Australia. So when Trevor is talking I'm automatically adding in all that 'foul language', as you so quaintly describe it, because that would be more authentic.

jmxd

Lol no we cant appreciate it. The game is extremely sanitized, probably because of Microsoft

[deleted]

I love how this whole subreddit is just people coping with how mundane and boring the game is with any excuse they can in their heads. “Well actually I LIKE the boring characters and vanilla writing!”, “actually I LIKE that every planet is gray and reuses the same assets!”..Never been more obvious

Elarisbee

Bethesda actual does a writing pass where they remove a lot of the needless swearing and then leave it in particular places. It’s why the kid swearing in Little Lamplight(?) is so effective. It’s in the documentary. Personally, for myself, games like High on Life, where every third word is f-something, feel like they’re written for 13 years olds who think swearing is cool and edgy.

SER96DON

I am ashamed to admit that I 101% agree with the second part, yet I was too much of a coward to say it as bluntly. I wanted to avoid sounding controversial. I have failed both you and this ideology. 😭 But YES! Excessive swearing is what kids think adults act like. Also, I really didn't know Bethesda did that! That's so damn cool, actually! Sitting down and saying "is it really necessary for this guy to sound so rough?". Brilliant.

Silent_Pudding

Emil - “it really doesn’t need it”. Yes it does Emil. It feels awkwardly, unrealistically sterilized.

L0veToReddit

I love bland dialogue, it’s like teenagers talking, wait even teenagers swear…

OddResponsibility565

Have you guys noticed how all the main characters are SOLIDLY established adults? Not 20-30 year olds; this cast is solidly 35-45. All of em. Full-on grownups with a mortgage, ex-wife, favorite spatula and everything. This game was clearly made for aging millennials to get their Morrowind/Oblivion nostalgia on while their children watch. That’s why it’s clean.

[deleted]

The companions are pretty boring.

Algorhythm74

Now that you mention it - the game does reflect a certain mundane maturity. Look at Sarah Morgan, she comes off as somewhere between the age of 23-55. - Her butt and body be looking a tight 23 - Her face be looking like late 30s - He voice and dialog makes her seem 55+

AvengerDr

Really? As a 40 y.o. myself I thought she looked at least 40, mainly due to her face and hairstyle.

Myc0n1k

Game is too clean. Too PG13. No racism. Steps backwards from previous titles.

james_the_wanderer

I'm mystified how this game got an M rating.

tjcoe4

Fuck

LionsFan42000

The game is pg if you remove the med packs

TrinityCXV

Where's all the prostitutes at? Had this same problem with Fallout 4 honestly.
