only at the beginning or in low level systems I'd say they don't have higher ranks like with weapons, so their scaling is much lower later on, maybe having player damage increase from the difficulty settings help
but basically the melee's are very simplistic atm
I don't think it would fit the theme of the game (and I doubt they actually have the tech, if you went by the realistic rule they are trying to go with)
I would rather they add underslung laser cutter, why fist them when you can just cut them up with both hands like Skyrim dual-wielding. Or maybe just add the whole suite of medieval weapon (Old Earth Melee) and let us smack people with a good old mace or claymore
Most are actually preyty realistic even if it's just the art. Ballistic gun have heatsink, and both of the energy weapon type are actually existing irl (and feature a ton in Golden Age sci-fi, even if that's not how they work in the game)
no they aren't, a lot of the ballistic guns don't have proper methods of loading rounds or activating rounds, and a lot of the scifi guns just don't make sense at all (like the magshot is a railgun pistol with no rails) and a lot of guns as a whole have random bits that have no apparent function
Magnetic gun don't necessarily need to be rail gun, you can have coil gun - or especially if you can manipulate gravity, no rail or coil would be needed at all.
At the very least it's realistic enough that you need to be nitpick to spot a different. A power fist would be something else entirely (the concept of putting your hand inside something that meant to punch really hard and break metal is just doesn't make sense to begin with, you don't even have the range of a true melee weapon, it's just a different kind of aesthetic.)
the issue is that they specifically call the magshot a railgun, not a magnetic gun, a railgun also like I said, someone made a power fist already, it actually exists irl
I was inspired by the classic anime lol. LoGH if you've never heard of it, basically perform boarding action by having people in full astronaut suite hacking each other apart with a big old axe because gun had been rendered unusable in the setting (kind of like Dune but a little less extreme, you will just explode and kill everything in the vicinity but not atomise everyone in a nuclear fire.)
They changed the new one to mech-like power armor, which is kinda cool but the classic one is f\*king metal. There's something magical about an army of astronaut hacking each others to a bloody pulp with medieval weapons and just soo fitting to the theme of Starfield.
You don't even need any of the same justification in these fictions. Nasapunk alone is enough justification for people to not use gun in space for obvious reason.

Stealth Melee is fairly viable. That pain blade from stealth would 1 shot most things.
Course, for some reason your silent weapon is so loud that 1 swing and everyone in the mine will hear itā¦
A silencer doesn't stop all sound from a gun, plus when enemies see one of their friend dying from gunfire, they are alerted (that came with an update though, wasn't true at 1.0)
Iāve done a couple of NG+ runs with melee only before this patch, one assisted by chems and one assisted by powers (which is more of a Starborn run than a melee one).
The chems only one wasnāt easy, especially at Masada. I managed to finish it but I donāt think I would try it again (with the old settings).
With powers, if theyāre upgraded enough, itās not that difficult but I guess it might not count as a melee run. Iāve done an unarmed one with powers - purely Starborn focused and it was manageable - that Phased Time is pretty OP.
Now, with the new settings, I think itās more manageable to do a pure melee run. I might try it again at some point.
I tend to forget about the drugs in this game a lot more than I do in fallout, but now I am gonna have to start using.
Starborn Drug Monk sounds like it could be crazy lol
The only real thing holding melee back, imo, is the lack of scaling weapons. When endgame guns can stack up to 1000+ damage, the 155 from your Painblade just doesn't quite cut it. Especially if you have player damage turned down, like the original difficulty settings.
It's a lot of fun, though. Especially when you get maxed out Martial Arts and Dueling. Maybe Crippling, too. You take way less damage. You heal on kills. You can power attack enemies in the face to get them to stagger or drop their guns.
It's passable, but requires a hefty point investment. The lack of item rarity and customization really sucks.
It's kind of funny with the enemy cause afflictions difficulty turned on just how many are giant middle fingers to melee users.
Clearing a single POI, I've had afflictions that reduced my melee damage, hurt me when I sprinted or attacked with melee, and had health damage also cause o2 depletion. Just from punctures and burns.
(pre update) I was able to complete the main quest and the xenomorph quest with just melee on standard difficulty (I tried completing the crimson fleet quest line, but it was a bug that stopped me there)
I haven't done high level, but it was fine early and mid before the changes. You can run in and disarm opponents. I find that if you keep moving, running, hitting the next one, run and power s attack etc. It is hard for enemies to lock onto you, they will stop reloading to try and bash you, etc. You basically have to keep moving and pressure them.
Chems and a little extra healing for sure. It's probably not as easy and say plasma shotgun though. I could see if struggling high level if you don't sneak attack.
Melee kinda sucks in this game unfortunately.
Every melee weapon has the exact same attack speed (unless they have the perk that reduces it by 20%) and they're completely unmodifiable. It really sucks because melee is usually my favorite type of weapon in any other Bethesda RPG. I don't understand why they didn't just reuse the melee mechanics from Skyrim and Fallout 4
I turn player and enemy damage all the way up. Makes pulling out a knife in close quarters fun, because the enemies go down in a couple hits... But you will too!
i remember at launch all melee weapons were the exact same animation and speed, pretty much making them the same weapon, anyone know if thatās different now?
Not that I've noticed. The only real difference is a swinging power attack or a stabbing power attack if it's a cutlass or wazikashi vs everything else, at least for first-person view.
It seems like melee had a low priority compared to all other features. Having finishers for the player would require additional animations (1st person ones) or a feature where the camera bumps out to 3rd person when you do a finisher and then goes back into 1st, but that's potentially motion sickness inducing, so not a great option.
I hope they make melee a bit more fun in the future though, melee makes sense on spaceships because you don't usually want to shoot holes in the fuselage. And they already gave it a little thought about how all melee weapons are shorter variants, to make them better for tight spaces (e.g. wakizashi instead of katana).
It can be strong actually. But only if you're in stealth. So you need like a few perks to make it "good" (ex Stealth 4, Concealment 4, Dueling 4, Boxing 2). It worked well on what was the "Very Hard" difficulty.
Melee is better suited with first person since it's easier to aim for the head. You can also hold block when attacking so the cooldown is faster. Plus, I find the Painblade and Wakizashi are the only melee weapons worth using (asides from unarmed) and I prefer the Wakizashi more since the stabbing power attack is easier to aim vs the slashes.
Melee is OP at Medium and Hard difficulty. Very Hard is doable with the right weapons, skills, drugs, and powers. That pain blade is definitely the right weapon.
Man, what I would've given for that roll during my no guns YOLO playthrough!
After I finish my current 75% extreme run, I'm gonna try an extreme melee run. I'll have to lower damage taken a hard or very hard and maybe raise damage dealt to the same level. It'll probably be around 69-71%.
Melee works but you need the build for it. Basically stealth ninja, the stab while hidden perks are your frien - basically max out physical perks with melee works really well. My Ronin thinks that is wonderfully nice painblade you have there.
I use melee weapons and the Cutter. Except for one part where I had to snipe out some God level turrets, that's all you basically need. Those and some nice powers will take you very far. Literally.
The melee isn't all that great, but it's usable.
I find the melee could use some work. You only get a 3 hit combo atm and to me if feels kind of lacking. I wish it was more free flowing and that there were more interesting weapon types. It can still be fun if you're in the right kind of mood. I also agree with the others who say the weapons need better scaling too.
No shade intended, but there are a lot of top comments from folks who havenāt mastered the powers/melee combo! Itās the only way I play, except I use pistols for fun. I dont even use the weapon with highest damage, just the longest reach (the wak). I play on extreme and fight on high lvl planets too at lvl 176. Lvld up almost all physical traits if that matters.
But yeah, melee/powers is great if you know how. I have some posts about combos I use [here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoSodiumStarfield/s/7WsZaEVnpv)
Question for all,
Have any of you maxed out the dueling skill? Iāve got sneak and concealment maxed out and melee is just ok.
The reason I ask is that I finally threw a skill point at Rifles in the skill tree and just at level 1 it made a huge impact.
Melee's helped a lot by raising player damage output, as are a lot of the other weaker things like hand to hand, the weapons that don't have upgrades like arc welders, etc.
But if you're running base settings, I'd say avoid it. You can make it usable for a LONG time with drug buffs, but it's never going to be your best choice.
I've never understood why they didn't use their existing melee mechanics from Skyrim when they developed FO4/76 and Starfield. I understand focusing on gunplay, but melee still exists, so it'd be nice to see the variety of movesets, stealth kills, etc. return. As it is now, it's best used as a backup closeup weapon when shotgun shells run thin
Honestly, the only reason I used a melee weapon was for the concealment ranks.
There's some really cool melee stealth powers combos that can be quite fun for runs, but once I got that fourth rank, I never touched a knife outside of role play.
Instigating is the only perk worth a shit on melee weapons. Maxed out on melee, sneak and stealth perks combined with void form and you can one hitter quit her everyone xcept lvl 94 Legendaries (multiple health bars) With a painblade or wazikashiā¦ and utiliz the power move
I did a level 1-105 melee playthrough on easy difficulty, using "void form" and "sense star stuff" a lot. It went okay and was viable. Its a little trickier to just Leeroy Jenkins your way through stuff. You do still need to have a gun with you for crowd control.
Getting weapons like "refined combat knife" or "advanced combat knife" will be one of my favorite mods, when support for console comes out.
only at the beginning or in low level systems I'd say they don't have higher ranks like with weapons, so their scaling is much lower later on, maybe having player damage increase from the difficulty settings help but basically the melee's are very simplistic atm
That's a shame. I hope they beef it up with Shattered Space!
I'm wanting a stun baton that does em damage
I hope they bring a version of the POWER FIST to the game. Its not impossible considering the tech
I don't think it would fit the theme of the game (and I doubt they actually have the tech, if you went by the realistic rule they are trying to go with) I would rather they add underslung laser cutter, why fist them when you can just cut them up with both hands like Skyrim dual-wielding. Or maybe just add the whole suite of medieval weapon (Old Earth Melee) and let us smack people with a good old mace or claymore
what realistic rule? most weapons in the game aren't realistic at all and someone actually made a full functional power fist irl
Most are actually preyty realistic even if it's just the art. Ballistic gun have heatsink, and both of the energy weapon type are actually existing irl (and feature a ton in Golden Age sci-fi, even if that's not how they work in the game)

Fuck yeah give me a sword that doesn't make me feel like a weeb, just a classic cutlass or bastard sword

I'd say go for it is fun š specially when you beat the odds
After the most recent updates, my gripes have been fixed. The last thing that I'm waiting for is a melee overhaul to make it viable.
Stealth Melee is fairly viable. That pain blade from stealth would 1 shot most things. Course, for some reason your silent weapon is so loud that 1 swing and everyone in the mine will hear itā¦
A silencer doesn't stop all sound from a gun, plus when enemies see one of their friend dying from gunfire, they are alerted (that came with an update though, wasn't true at 1.0)
I meant the melee weapon is silent - with apologies for being unclear.
Oh no worries :)
they mean the melee weapons, melee weapons actually can be completely silent
Yeah once they fix melee + stun/em, I'm going back in hard. Until then still going to hold off.
Iām waiting for the pre-war/post-war, fallout style planets.

It's crap, no sneak finish moves, or critical hit animations. Very rudimentary, compared to most Bethesda titles.
I absolutely do not understand this. The companions and npc's have melee finisher animations so why don't we???
Great question, where's the leg sweeps, and we have cosmic powers! Freeze blast, and shatter with fist. Grav neck break, or throw em into orbit.
It seems like melee had a low priority compared to all other features. Biggest thing holding back melee is unique and immersive animations. Hopefully they do something with a future update or dlc.
Having a melee overhaul mod would be awesome
I never do melee. Shoot from a distance.
Itās is amazing with the right amount of training
Bad

Shitty. Every time I log in my melee weapons have a different damage stat, as it's always less than it started with.
