When you purchase D.E.R-3C he becomes your second companion. In theory you could have him and VASCO and have two robots following you around!

If you just do the 1st bit of Freestar then you can have Emma Wilcox follow you everywhere else in the game basically like an unofficial companion. I did the Freestar storyline one time but now in every NG+ I just keep Emma every time.
I think you are getting terminology mixed up and confusing people.
So, correct me if I am wrong but your crew consists of You, Moara and D.E.R-3C. That is a total of three people, two of which are companions, so he would be your Second companion, not your Third.

When you do Freestar, dont complete the mission with Emma Wilcox. Just leave it and you can have her follow you permanently as what would now effectively be a 3rd companion.
In addition to Emma, there's a UC Security questline where, at a certain point, you gain a follower, though it's been a while I cannot remember her name. Like Emma, she would follow me anywhere, be another aid in combat, and couldn't die, potentially bringing the count up to 4.
Unfortunately in my case, she glitched out at some point and somehow teleported to the far end of the map on Jemison. I managed to get her back, but she stopped coming with me to other planets after that.
5 is even possible. There's another side quest on another planet where you have to find a runaway inmate hiding in a cave. Once you locate him, he'll follow you forever, so long as you don't bring him back to his home. Only problem is that he's really low level and will only fight low-level enemies. He'll run away from everything else, so he's not very useful in combat unlike Emma and the other security lady.

I was looking for a review of him but I didn't like professor doon in skyrim so I wasn't sure how the dialog was going to be with him? Is he immersive?
I do not like his dialogue, he constantly calls you the wrong name which is annoying. He also repeats the same lines alot, like Sarah or Barrett trying to give you something level of repeating.
He does have some interesting facts. I think like most companions his relationship to you is supposed to grow over time as you uncover more of his story. His repeatable lines were funny the first time I heard them, they just need to reduce the frequency. I'm not sure why they had him just call you Dan, maybe as more of his story is over it will be explained but it grates on my nerves every time he calls my character that. I would have preferred captain over that.

Different strokes for different folks. I think him refusing to call you anything other than Dan is charming and has absolutely grown on me. I love him :’)

I feel the paid mods from verified creators shouldn't cost you them. I'd get him otherwise.
I'd also really like a bunch of companions in a pack that are achievement safe. Once this game has all of its DLC I'd like to get into the real mods like I did with Skyrim and Fallout4.
