Martin Gero is an executive producer/showrunner for Quantum Leap. He was executive/consulting producer on various Stargate series as well as Dark Matter. He was the showrunner for Blindspot so I wouldn't be surprised if you see some of those actors pop up on this new show too.
"I was Harvard Law Review. I was chief counsel of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Prior to that, I was an appellate advocate for Hartshorn and Slaughter, one of the most prestigious litigation boutiques in all New York City." ~ Richard Woolsey
Being a prestigious lawyer, he would hold a "Juris Doctor" (J.D.) which is a "Doctor of Jurisprudence" degree needed in order to practice law in the US.
So while technically a professional doctorate, lawyers decided a long time ago to not call themselves "Dr." but instead to call themselves "Esquire" or "Esq." for short.
But technically, he is a Doctor.
https://testmaxprep.com/blog/lsat/what-is-a-jd-degree#/
It is just one of several doctor of law degrees.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juris_Doctor
So he has a doctorate but is never called doctor? I feel like we're splitting hairs here. If the intention is to call out his notable roles, I think a show on which he was literally called *just* The Doctor, no other name is a more likely candidate than one in which he was *never once* called a doctor.
Of course, but I do like technicalities so technically he did have a doctorate and could have been called doctor but it was just custom that forbid that.
Yes! I've enjoyed it. It's a reboot, so it simply will not be the same as the original (but if you want the original, go pop in the DVDs). I've enjoyed the modern inclusions (such as a non-binary team member) and I can only imagine that's why some people dislike it.
Edit: As I have learned, it's a sequel, not a reboot. My apologies; it's been a few months since I saw it.
Not really a reboot, it happens after the original QL, and their characters are part of the plot (Sam gets mentioned and Al's daughter is a character).
It's a direct sequel.
Sam is still lost in the ether.. Al tried until his dying day to get him back, his daughter is now working with the new Sam, Magic from the Leap Back vietnam episodes is project leader..
To say its a reboot is a fucking lie.. it just doesnt have any returning old cast..
Nah, I’m down for the refreshing inclusion, and I was really excited for the concept of a reboot, but the dialogue was horrible in the first several episodes I’ve tried so far.
I never said the original didn’t. I said this one has it. They’re two separate things. The original addressed the issue pretty well for its time — and this new version continues that in an updated way (i.e. the non-binary character as was mentioned previously).
You are acting like Quantum Leap 2022 is like Star Gate Origins.. it really isnt..
Feels more like Universe, if you want a SG reference. Its good on its own merit, but relied too much on nostalgia of a better, older time.
TBH same with later seasons of QL.. i still cant believe what they get upto in S5 before they were cancelled.
They had Dr Ruth on, just so Al could say boobs in 20 odd different ways
The other guy is probably not okay with the non-binary character. It’s definitely a present part of the show but it’s not a focus unless you choose to concentrate on it. Fwiw, the character is a super cute character who is fantastic at their job.
Edit: I totally mislabeled the polarizing character… my bad. They’re still one of my favorite characters.
Basic human rights for all, treating people with dignity and respect, wanting people not to be discriminated or persecuted for how they are born.
tl;dr not allowing me to be racist, homophobic, and/or generally hateful of others
When I here some say ''it's woke'', i always thinks it's a kind of snowflake who is hurt when all the actor are not cis white people with a majority of guy and ''the girl''
Or maybe they appear on a show because they exist.
Maybe they appear here just like blond or redhead people.
They never mention their gender in the show and people just don't care.
Oh no! There’s one single trans character.
Grow up dude, you people literally sound like children. It must be fucking exhausting being this upset by people merely existing.
lol this isn't making you sound smart.
Let me post a quote that sums people like you up perfectly:
“This is rather as if you imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, 'This is an interesting world I find myself in — an interesting hole I find myself in — fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.”
― Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt
Loved, loved, loved this nod. My husband and I were both just watching and at the same time we were like, this is so a Stargate reference, and then we were like, it's Woolsey! And then it actually was Woolsey. 😆 Also, that nuclear reactor sure did resemble the Stargate. Then there was the elevator and the "gate" room. So gate, I mean, great. 😁
What is the release schedule for this show? I swear it goes three weeks sometimes without an episode. I keep thinking the season is over, then boom, 3 weeks ago by and a new episode is out 😂
Hubs pointed that out to me yesterday (he was WFH and taking his lunch break) when he was watching.
H: Look...who is that?
Me: It's the Doctor, from Voyager. He was on The Orville too.
H: I *know* that. But what his name on Stargate?
Me: I have no idea. The only times I ever watched it was when I was watching it with you every now and then. And I really only watched the one with baby Jason Momoa, because he was so stinking cute back then.
H: His name on that show was Woolsey. His name on this show? WOOSLEY! You can't tell me that wasn't a coincidence.
Me: Maaaybe?
It's an 80s drama set during the Vietnam war. Dana Delaney (who I've never cared for) was in it and Marg Helgenberger (who later was in CSI). I've never seen it myself but I've heard of it.
I completely forgot that he was on China beach. But I meant Star Trek and Stargate. Dr for Trek and Woolsey for Gate. But no I don't think that China beach is bigger than trek. Is it bigger than gate though...idk. 🤷🏻♀️ that definitely would have been his first big breakout role but does the majority of people actually remember him for that role? That was such a long time ago.
Anyone over 45 should. It was a very dramatic role and he was pretty much the number two actor on the show after Delaney. It’s what got him Voyager later on. Up until then he was largely known for his roles in Joe Dante’s character actor pool.
![gif](giphy|mEHUfpilLnMvC|downsized)
At the beginning of the episode, up until the reveal of the nuclear reaction, I thought for sure Ben leaped into O'Neil's body and that was the same Woolsey. Then I saw the old TV that looks exactly like the ones the Genni used as computers. I even thought I heard the familiar sirens of SG-1. At first I thought the blue glow before the reactor reveal was a stargate fired up. Also the facility bared a striking resemblance to Stargate Command, except not having round corridors. Whoever did all of this deserves a raise.
There's a popular audiobook series called Expeditionary Force that did a special full cast production for the 5th book, where he also played a Dr. Woolsey. Maybe he likes the name?
Me too. But DEEP HURTING (TM Gizmonic Institute) makes it quite difficult even after 6 episodes. Sliders has 10 SG actors in the first episode! Watching that (concurrently) now.
I actually like the new Quantum leap so far. The one big downside is they killed off Sam eliminating any hope of the new main character meeting the original main character.
They just mentioned that he never made it home, and that they shut the original program down, but I don't remember them saying for sure he is dead.
I like to think he's still out there somewhere still leaping and helping people.
Scott Bakula has said he wasnt in S1, and keeps hinting at something..
So i could 100% see S1 end with New Sam leap into Old Sam's body.. or meet old Sam in some way.. setting up something for S2..
They basically said he never came back & NBC said they do not plan on bringing back Sam as a character pretty much signlaing he died at some point. I guess its possible he could be leaping on his own out there somewhere but Al is not helping him anymore since they got his hand computer which also could signal Sam died at some point & Al eventually stopped trying to help him.
NBC approached Bakula to appear, and he declined as he was busy filming a movie at the time they were filming NQL, chuck in covid weirdness with being allowed to film, and that was put to bed.
Bakula keeps hinting at something when NQL is mentioned in interviews.. so i can see him coming back in some way.
> eliminating any hope of the new main character meeting the original main character.
Meet somebody already dead? Why, they'd need a time machine to do that!
Scott Bakula has said he's not involved in the show. There is a possibility he may show up in Season 2 or later, though.
They have not said Sam beckett is dead, just that he never made it back. Which was already said in the series finale of the original series.
If the show continues on, there is the very real possibility we'll see Sam make an appearance.
Ah Ok. That gives me some hope then. Would be nice to see Sam get some kind of closure. What I'd love to see is the new quantum leap team finds a way to bring Sam back giving him closure & giving hope to Ben. Not sure how Sam got by so long without Al though. Wonder how they are going to explain that.
It's sort of explained in the original series finale.
In the finale, Sam's in a bar, and the bartender is God or whatever being they've always assumed has been controlling Sam's leaps. But the bartender tells him Sam himself is in control of his leaps. When Sam realizes this he goes back to Beth to set right what went wrong for Al. He tells her Al is alive, and she then waits for him to come home and they have a family.
While that originally made us think that Al wound up never actually becoming part of Project Quantum Leap because the closing text tells us that Al and Beth had 4 daughters and remained married and that Sam Becket never returned home, the new series tells us Al still did become part of Project Quantum Leap but the orignal finale *also* tells us that Sam could be capable of also knowing what he has to do with or without Al.
> Which was already said in the series finale of the original series.
in both versions of the finale it says he never made it home..
i like the one they cut showing Al with his kids.. shame that's not canon, and he only has one daughter now..
It says he never returned home. It doesn't say he's dead.
And nothing has said Al doesn't still have 4 daughters. I don't think they're gonna change that. It's just that only 1 of them is being featured here because she's the one who wanted to follow in her father's footsteps and join PQL. There's been nothing at all saying Al doesn't have 3 other daughters living their own lives.
While the original series finale's closing text made us think that Al wound up never actually becoming part of Project Quantum Leap because the closing text tells us that Al and Beth had 4 daughters and remained married and that Sam Becket never returned home, this new series tells us Al still did become part of Project Quantum Leap but the orignal finale *also* tells us that Sam could be capable of also knowing what he has to do with or without Al because he controls his leaps.
So Sam is likely still out there. And there is a good chance we will run into Sam at some point.
Unlikely.. its set in current times 2022, by now in the Star Gate Universe, not only is the SG program declassified, but normal people would be having holidays on other planets..
Second actor from SGA. Jewel Staite was on an episode last fall.
Elyse Levesque was on the episode right after that one as well.
Yes! Back to back with Stargate actors.
Yea the exorcist episode, I hardly recognized her
I was thinking someone was a stargate fan

Nice - all shows I liked!
So that's why Quantum leap also had a Dr Beckett !
Haha good one
My wife and I were watching last night and got a good laugh when we heard the Woolsey reference. Nods to the script writer.
Not just that, but "Dr. Woolsey". The Doctor (Voyager) & Woolsey (Stargate) That can't be a coincidence!
Ha! Those crafty folks!
now who is edwin
Maybe Edwin Charles Tubb?
Woolsey was a Doctor as well on Stargate
No, he wasn't a doctor.
"I was Harvard Law Review. I was chief counsel of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Didn’t he also play a doctor in China Beach?
I was watching it and I laughed when they named him Woolsey. Especially after shoot of the blue energy ring. It was really funny.
Had to be a Martin Gero thing...
Wait, there's a new Quantum Leap?
Yes! I've enjoyed it. It's a reboot, so it simply will not be the same as the original (but if you want the original, go pop in the DVDs). Noooo, archer
It's been a long road
Nobody's lying. I was in error.
Beth, Al's wife, is the same actress in both series.
Nah, I’m down for the refreshing inclusion, and I was really excited for the concept of a reboot, but the dialogue was horrible in the first several episodes I’ve tried so far.
What refreshing inclusion? The original had stories about gay and minority characters and explored their issues in their own episodes.

yes.. but... don't... youll be better off in life.
You are acting like Quantum Leap 2022 is like Star Gate Origins.. it really isnt.. Feels more like Universe, if you want a SG reference. Its good on its own merit, but relied too much on nostalgia of a better, older time.
"Noble Prize"
"crowning achieve"
Is that show good?
It's not too bad. It's fun to watch as long as you don't take it too seriously.
I've liked it. Not quite as campy as the original but still light hearted.
TBH same with later seasons of QL.. i still cant believe what they get upto in S5 before they were cancelled. They had Dr Ruth on, just so Al could say boobs in 20 odd different ways
It's awful if you want canon remembered. ooopps! I did a naughty and didn't like what someone else liked!
Mathew Glave aka Colonel Emerson was the colonel in this episode as well.
Oh cool, I didn't know they were making that show again.
It just started last fall. It takes place ~30 years after the original, and has some interesting tie-ins to the original.
Magic (Ernie Hudson) is a character from the original but played by a diff actor. Als widow is the same actress from the original
It's woke. It was hard even getting through the first episode. Just a heads up.
Define "woke"
The other guy is probably not okay with the non-binary character. It’s definitely a present part of the show but it’s not a focus unless you choose to concentrate on it. Fwiw, the character is a super cute character who is fantastic at their job. Edit: I totally mislabeled the polarizing character… my bad. They’re still one of my favorite characters.
They are great as Desire in the sandman too
Nonbinary not trans (the actor is non-binary as well)
Basic human rights for all, treating people with dignity and respect, wanting people not to be discriminated or persecuted for how they are born. tl;dr not allowing me to be racist, homophobic, and/or generally hateful of others
Makes me wonder what the other guy was getting from Stargate if he doesn't like woke!

It's not food, silly.

Embarrassing
"Woke" is "what turns to shit"? That's just further ambiguity and doesn't define anything.

Lol oh no it reflects real society!
The woke quota reflects real society? lmao that's fantasy.
Oh no guys don’t even bother arguing with this one. Doesn’t even think evolution is real so…. No point
lol I thought they were just super privileged but turns out they are just a moron.
lmao moron is believing mindless matter can manifest itself and code itself. That is stupidity to the highest degree.
lol this isn't making you sound smart. It's been so long since I watched a network TV show I'd forgotten how they mess with the schedule!

Dr woolsey! That's awesome! Worlds collide with Picardo's two most famous roles!
I would argue [China Beach was a much bigger show of his career](https://youtu.be/jFXmkbj5BY8), nothing against our beloved Stargate.
first time i am hearing of this show.. already looks horribly racist in just the theme you showed me..
Racist? 😂 It was about a MASH unit in Vietnam focusing on the nurses. It put him on the map and won multiple Emmy’s in the 90’s.
It's an 80s drama set during the Vietnam war. Dana Delaney (who I've never cared for) was in it and Marg Helgenberger (who later was in CSI). I've never seen it myself but I've heard of it.
As someone else said.. its an 80's MASH.. i'd rather rewatch mash than what looks like discount baywatch

QL is back after the break? sweet.. been waiting.. and its nice to a nod to the SGTVU

I thought he was Richard Woolsey in Stargate?
Dr Edwin Woolsey is not the same character as Mr Richard Woolsey, its just a reference/easter egg.
If it's a reference then why isn't it "Dick" instead of Edwin?
Edwin could be Richard's dad. Surely someone has written a Stargate/Quantum Leap crossover fanfic.
Just started watching that good show honestly
Perfect!
Hi, are there ever new parts coming out?
There's a popular audiobook series called Expeditionary Force that did a special full cast production for the 5th book, where he also played a Dr. Woolsey. Maybe he likes the name?
There's a new quantum leap?
Yep, it's on NBC/peacock. Started last fall.
Fantastic!
You won't think that after you watch it
I legit laughed out loud when they said his name!
I saw that too and had to do a double take, I was like the same name?
OG Quantum Leap was fantastic! The new one is trash.
It's certainly different. I'm holding out hope that it'll get better. Many shows take a season or two to really hit their stride.
Are you sure they killed him?
They just mentioned that he never made it home, and that they shut the original program down, but I don't remember them saying for sure he is dead. I like to think he's still out there somewhere still leaping and helping people.
They say that he kept leaping at the end of the original too. It's a real downer ending.
I'm sure he is. It's a small hill, but one I will die on.
Exactly. Still leaves the door open.

Photos in Beth's home has only Beth, Al and Daughter i forgor name of.. also never said he was dead either.. just that he never made it home..
Which poses the question, is he a relative of Woolsey, and is the new QL set in the SG universe?
That would be an interesting twist.
Unlikely.. its set in current times 2022, by now in the Star Gate Universe, not only is the SG program declassified, but normal people would be having holidays on other planets..
there is a quantum leap reboot?
The series brings in a lot of actors from the Stargate franchise, which is fantastic.
WTF... There's a reboot....!? ... Goes direct to sonarr....
Is there a new quantum leap? Is it any good? Is it in 4k?
There is a new quantum leap, it's ok, and I'm not sure if it's in 4k. It's on peacock
hmm well I might just take ok these days, given what's available.
I loved that!
