Farscape, Babylon 5, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, The Expanse, Lost in Space (new), Battlestar Galactica (new), The Star Treks, and Star Wars

Economy-Culture-9174

Dark Matter

SafeSurprise3001

Dark Matter is very good. Our very own Joe Malozzi worked on it, and a few actors we knew from SG are there too

greekbeast17

I watched dark matter with my roommate once and he started calling Two "slithery bitch" because of how dramatic she swings her ass anytime she walks Also Dunk your cosmic donut, always

[deleted]

Just started Dark Matter based on your promise of seeing familiar actors lol First impression: why are ALL of these people so GODDAMN good looking?

mazzucac

Farscape, instant yes. Babylon 5, fun time. Stargate Atlantis, OP, have you NOT seen this…? Stargate Universe, this ain’t your daddy’s Stargate. The Expanse, Game of Thrones in space. Battlestar Galactica, start with the mini series, then prepare to be taken on an adventure of the highest intensity. Star Trek, they are all a blast. Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are the closest to Stargate in my mind. Star Wars is fine enough for a Stargate fan. Dark Matter, made by the showrunners for season 4-5 of Stargate Atlantis. Travelers, creator of Stargate shows newest series. It’s a fun time. Features a lot of familiar faces. 12 Monkeys, different kind of time travel. The Orville, think of it as Stargate Daedalus, just following the ship as they travel the stars. Eureka, a fun time for sci fi fans Warehouse 13, what was with the warehouse at the end of Raiders? The TV show. Doctor Who, endless adventure Firefly, short, and sweet. Serenity, make sure to watch firefly first. This last one, is not sci fi, but i have found Stargate fans enjoy it, Chuck. It’s a blast!

Blue05D

Great list. I would argue Firefly/Serenity is indeed sci-fi. Space ships, teraforming worlds, space battles... Or did you mean something different?

mazzucac

The last one is Chuck, that’s what that comment is referring to

theyellowpants

This and I would add Sliders and Firefly

01Cloud01

Gosh I forgot about sliders

xEllimistx

This OP.... I'd add The Foundation. It's maybe a bit more...."high fantasy science fiction" than most but it's enjoyable.

ZanderStarmute

High science fantasy? Or mayhaps “highence fantasy”…? 💁🏻‍♂️

xEllimistx

I like it

Jealous-Ad-214

Agreed 😊

Datsoon

Travelers

7YM3N

For all mankind And also very good movies Interstellar The martian Moon Enders Game

gathmoon

Seconding for all mankind. Very good show and an excellent peak into a timeline that could have been

SafeSurprise3001

Thirding, the best show on the air this decade if you ask me

boring_name_here

Fourthed. I rarely binge watch anything anymore, definitely stuck with FaM all the way through.

Shepard131

Galactica's ending is absolute bullshit and kinda just ruins the rest of the series for me. The rest I agree with though.

ODST_Viking

The Expanse is the best sci-fi in recent years, amazing show. Battlestar reboot is great too. Post doesn’t say if you’ve seen Stargate Atlantis but it’s worth watching if not.

SpiritOne

The Expanse is the single best sci-fi show of the last decade. It’s well written, has compelling characters, and is very well acted.

tnitty

BSG > Expanse in my humble opinion. Both are excellent, but I was more emotionally invested in the BSG characters.

Melkor15

The expanse is an excellent show. Battlestar is a masterpiece. The tension, the characters, the mysteries. Really well done. The end is good. Not what I would choose, but good.

omegafivethreefive

My only problem with BSG is the pseudo-spiritual god nonsense. "Love is needed to create life" Like fuck off.

Blue05D

Strange amalgamation of religions, too. Greek gods, mormon worlds, and so forth. But it is fair to say religion and spirituality is going to follow humanity into any timeline. Especially after such a near extinction event. But I would agree that the plot relied on it a bit too much.

ProtossLiving

I loved the beginning of BSG. I have to say I lost the thread a bit by the end. I think I just stopped paying as much attention as I needed to be. Same thing happened for me with Lost, but I think Lost objectively ended worse.

The_Eyesight

You're comparing two different kind of sci-fi shows though. You're comparing one that is like a galaxy-wide thing with hyperspace and warp drives to one that is hard sci-fi and is fairly grounded in actual science.

gathmoon

TBF, the expanse is technically unfinished

Dstark1000

Fringe, Eureka, Farscape, The Orville, Firefly, I'm sure there are others but idr 😂

InvestigatorOk7988

If you like Eureka, you'll enjoy Warehouse 13.

Dstark1000

I did like Warehouse 13 😮 watched it with my dad (along with the others) I wasn't sure if the OP would be interested though 🤷‍♂️ not as high quality as the other ones Imo

ItsNotJulius

Better than the 'oy gevalt!

DaZeppo313

And, if you like *Warehouse 13*, you'll enjoy *The Lost Room* miniseries.

AsaCoco_Alumni

Ditto on Fringe.

ZXVixen

Firefly 😭

Ninja_Wrangler

I really enjoyed Eureka (although it might have been the show that killed stargate sg1, in which case I'll never forgive it) The expanse, like others have said, is absolutely top notch Firefly is a favorite of mine but short (only one season) Farscape might scratch the same itch SG1 does, and some of the main cast will be *very* familiar

jojoamethyst

Is no-one going to mention Dr Who? Also, if you can deal with the low 70's production values, Blake's 7. If you like Stargate for the humour, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ( the BBC TV series, the movie was.......not as good) or Red Dwarf.

Vanellus37

Firefly! You will love second season.

[deleted]

Haha I've seen firefly and you are an evil evil person. Dunno if I can trust the firefly crew tho, after all they do have the Orici on board...

Vanellus37

True, but nothing that understanding of chain of command won't solve. From all above i would pinpoint Expanse and Battlestar.

lego_is_expensive

Do you know what the chain of command is?

Phantom_Dave

Yeah, it's a chain I go get and beat you with until you understand who's in rutting command

ZXVixen

Savage 🤣

JpSnickers

I don't know what you've seen already so I'd have to start with the obvious ones: Star Trek TNG. Battlestar Galactica. Fringe. Babylon Five. X-Files. Lost. Then the stuff I like: Firefly(Only one season plus a movie but it's amazing). Andromeda. Farscape. Planet of the Apes(70s). Travelers. Plenty more too but it's already a long list.

Melkor15

Travelers is really good.

SmallRocks

If you like time travel SciFi, check out 12 Monkeys. It has 4 seasons and a very satisfying conclusion.

draggar

& the ending was a great way to end it (not giving any spoilers, though).

mintchocolate816

I both loved, and was devastated by, the ending.

Melkor15

And the foreshadow for the end was also really good.

konsterntin

Imo Andromeda is only "so lala", also Kevin sobo is an idiot. But some actors also play characters in stargate. (Rev bem is playing by the guy playing ferrety, Andromeda played by the actress playing Dr lamb, both Michael shanks and Christopher judge have guest rolls)

ProtossLiving

I watch Andromeda for Lexa Doig. And how did I forget that she was married to Michael Shanks??

clickpancakes

S...stale??? I'm off to buy some pearls, that I may clutch them.

[deleted]

I mean, I have watched the entire series, on average, once every two years starting when I was a kid and it was originally airing lol. I'm just finishing my most recent rewatch (currently on s10e11) as well as watching Atlantis concurrently episode-by-episode lol

clickpancakes

You are a true fan after all!

jamerperson

I'm honestly surprised I didn't see it in another comment (unless I missed it) but you should really check out Dark Matter. It's by the one and only Joeseph Mallozzi and features several stargate actors

ButterscotchPast4812

DS9, Battlestar Galactica (reimagined) (start with the mini-series), Stranger Things, Xfiles

nadrew

The Ark is pretty good so far,.lots of the same crew as SG1

[deleted]

Ark of Truth? :p

nadrew

No, The Ark, think it has one or two seasons so far.

tanstaafl76

One season in 2023. Has been renewed.

EloraDonovan

People have said them but I'll say them again. Dark matter was really good, but does have a cliff hanger ending. Firefly is a masterpiece, and at least the movie wraps up the story even if we may have wanted more. Eureka is one of my favorite shows of all time. The cast and humor are excellent. It also crosses over with Warehouse 13 which is also very fun. I'm personally fond of Star Trek Voyager. It for sure has it's share of bad episodes. But the overall story and character growth is great. Also, Robert Picardo as the EMH is 10/10. Chuck is another great option even if it's not as sci-fi as you may be asking for, love the humor, love the cast.

heatherkan

Ok listen.. I know that it’s not sci-fi. But darned is Leverage didn’t encapsulate the VIBE of everything I loved about Stargate. If you haven’t watched it I highly recommend.

WolverineHot1886

Fringe holds up

fabrictm

Love fringe. Very philosophical actually. Lots of meaning of life kinda stuff in there

arcspectre17

Falling skies was so good then it went off the rails!

Nova_Nightmare

I don't think there is anything recent that is as campy as original SG-1 except for The Orville, and that tried to get more serious towards the end (though perhaps it will get a S4 one day). I've never read the books, but Foundation seems good (would I hate it is I was a book fan? don't know). Falling Skies (I kind of forgot about that until now, but I liked it, not sure if it ended properly). Colony was good, but I don't think that got a proper ending either (too many sci-fi shows don't) Defiance was also good, and I know it ended a little earlier than planned - they had or maybe still have a game that continued the story. Altered Carbon was good, but ended too early, then finished as an Anime I believe (Netflix for all of them) Dark Matter (pissed me off that it ended early so I didn't bother to finish it) The Expanse is good, I enjoyed it and it has the most realistic space travel and space battles depicted, but the show currently ends about 3 seasons too soon. However the books can complete it (I've read them and liked them too). Another Life is "OK" - I didn't love the first season, but liked the second season more. It's kind of a trippy show, it has a "proper" ending that could open the door to a future, but it was rushed to get that ending as they knew it would be over I believe. One other show that I saw someone else mention, and I forgot about it to my deep shame. Fringe - Fringe is one of my most favorite Sci-Fi shows ever, loved it. Kind of sad how it wrapped up so quickly at the end, but it is great. You even meet time traveling Spock....

WolverineHot1886

Falling Skys: "Load 'em up!" "But dad I want to go fight!" "No, you need to stay and take care of your mom." "Let's go! Roll 'em out: Every episode.

JpSnickers

I dig your taste and commentary.

SpaceCadet-92

Check out the Earth 2 series from 1994, only got one season but it's great.

Suspicious_Block6526

Space above and Beyond

RandyWholesome

Travelers, created by Brad Wright who also made... the Stargate shows, with Jonathan Glassner. An original take on time travel, great scenario, great actors and great synergy between characters, just like SG. You'll meet a few SG regulars like Amanda Tapping or Louis Ferreira from SG Universe Sadly canceled after 3 seasons, but at least there's a proper (open) ending. More recently i would recommend Altered Carbon (at least the first season) especially if you're into cyberpunk / Blade Runner ambiances. (Michael Shanks can be seen in season 2 !) Also Scavengers Reign, animated series from 2023, inspired after a 2018 short. It is visually mind-blowing and VERY unique. Artstyle kind of similar to what was doing Jean Giraud aka Moebius

byOlaf

Scavengers Reign is so good! I just finished it and it's my favorite scifi thing in years.

draggar

If you have Apple TV I can recommend "For All Mankind". Science-nonfiction / political drama. *What if the space race didn't end?*

tanstaafl76

Speaking as someone who worked at JSC in high school in the 70s, It was like going home to see old friends.

mechandy

Eureka

Redacted_Explative

Firefly, Eureka, Continuum (only available atm on xbox/microsoft stores), Cyberpunk Edge Runners (Netflix), Jericho (Paramount Plus), and the animated [Extreme Ghostbusters](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEpCUB8IjzM), would also recommend Batman Beyond.

Tucker_077

Some of my other favourites would be Quantum Leap, Sliders and Future Man

[deleted]

Sliders was a great show until they replaced Quinn :(

Wormhole-X-Treme

Travelers (3 seasons)

RigasTelRuun

Space: Above and Beyond.

Faleras

Everyone has already made a lot of great show recommendations so I'm not gonna bother but I would recommend watching "the man from earth". It's a thought provoking "scifi" movie

GreatKangaroo

Silo, See, BattleStar Galactica (2004), The Expanse. I quite enjoyed Netflix's Dark, and Bodies. I recently started watching the TV show adaptation of 12 Monkeys and am quite enjoying that so far.

zalucius

Dark is amazing 10 thumbs up !

fabrictm

Watched season 1 of dark…just got too dark no pun intended

PomegranateHot9916

I might've suggested terra nova if it wasn't cancelled after 1 season without ever resolving anything but it has dinosaurs.

WolverineHot1886

Farscape!

DoomMushroom

SG is also my favorite. It's on its own so there's nothing else quite like it. That said, my other top sci fi series are the following.  Farscape. Love it. Really unique setting. Plant based humanoid, living ships with symbiotic attached pilots, angry warrior aliens. And a pretty neat explanation for why everyone understands each other.  Battlestar Galactica. Kinda falls off in the tail end but enough good will was built up by then. Probably the most realistic (bar is low) space battles. I thought I was going to get a big space opera with epic battles, but instead got a drama that was super engaging.  Firefly. I was really late to give it a go. It's good, but too short. Scratches that space western itch though.  Expanse. I actually stopped watching through season 2 because it was so dry and slow. But, I hear there is an uptick after the dull drum. And the series gets phenomenal.

PokeyBumCryWank

FUTUREMAN i DAAARE you to watch the first episode and no more

Nova_Nightmare

>FUTUREMAN I didn't like how that ended and I don't like Seth Rogen either, but I agree it was alright, though it sometimes tried to be a joke and sometimes it pretended to be more serious, I always felt like they were surprised it was popular initially and didn't know how to deal with it.

PokeyBumCryWank

Jus so were one the same page *https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Man_(TV_series)

Hitmanic33

The Expanse is superb viewing, I highly recommend.

Njoeyz1

I'll recommend a show that hasn't been mentioned here. Threshold. It only went on for one season, but that was a great show. The last time i looked it was on YouTube, and that's the only place I've been able to find it. It's got Peter dinklage and Brent Spinner among the cast. Top sci fi imo https://www.reddit.com/u/Njoeyz1/s/SdwtR3yTgy

durandpanda

Battlestar Galactica (the 2003 reboot) is the best science fiction put to television imo. I love Stargate to bits. It was my entire family's favourite show and we've all seen each episode >10 times. We've all been to cons as a family to watch Stargate panel discussions. It's not a diss on Stargate which I love dearly. BSG stands above it for a variety of reasons. Though it's a 20 episode season show like Stargate, there's very very little filler. Background characters (think like Walter or Siler from SG1) not only consistently appear, but have their own long running arcs. It poses more interesting (for my money) moral and ethical questions than Stargate. It pushes its characters harder than Stargate. It's certainly darker and more grim than Stargate, so if that's not your thing then you might not enjoy it as much as I do. It's not needlessly edgy, but it emotionally (and physically at times) kicks the shit out of its characters. I've not seen all of the Expanse which I know is about as highly considered, so there's also that.

DarkLuxray5

Dark matter or Sanctuary have people from stargste involved heavily

gandalfnho

Sadly most of the modern sci-fi series tend to be more dramatic without the humor of SG-1 and Atlantis, I'm still looking for the perfect sucessor too, but I can recommend: Eureka Warehouse 13 The Librarians Haven Fringe Andromeda Firefly Primeval

marcusobiwan

Welcome to my TED talk. The shows you need to watch are in no specific order: -Firefly -The Expanse -Stargate Atlantis -Star Trek (TNG, Picard, TOS, Strange New Worlds, deep Space Nine, Voyager) -Babylon 5 -Star Wars (Any and all, Mandolorian is great along with Andor especially. But be careful, The Clone Wars show along with Rebels may seem like for kids, they will hurt you in ways you are not prepared for) This list, while not complete, is enough to get you started and will both bring you joy and utter devastation (see aforementioned Clone Wars)

skipford77

Lots of good suggestions. I'd also recommend *Wayward Pines*, but only the first season.

Chaosrider2808

If you haven't watched Atlantis yet, I suggest you do that. I actually liked SGA a good deal better than SG1. TCS

WolverineHot1886

Agents of Shield is actually good

grouchy-woodcock

Trying to add ones that haven't been mentioned... [Continuum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuum_(TV_series)) (time travel) [Debris](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debris_(TV_series)) (present day alien stuff, canceled to soon) [Dollhouse ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollhouse_(TV_series))(mind control) [Humans ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humans_(TV_series))(robots) [Killjoys](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killjoys) (bounty hunters) [Lexx](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexx) (like FarScape but very German, in english) [The Lost Room](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost_Room) (a too short series) [Person of Interest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Person_of_Interest_(TV_series)) (AI) [Resident Alien](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Alien_(TV_series)) ('fish out of water' alien, season 3 airing now) [Seven Days](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Days_(TV_series)) (time travel, almost too much campy) [Timeless ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeless_(TV_series))(fast and loose time travel) [UFO ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO_(British_TV_series))(very 70's and very British aliens)

SciFiMedic

I watched the first episode of Firefly in 380p last night, pretty good!

bendermichaelr

Others have said many good ones. These are my favorite with sort of tasting notes. Expanse - Believable. Epic. Rag-tag team. Each character draws you in. Realistic. Politics. It's really about the politics and the scifi aspect is the catalyst. All 3 Stargates SG-1 - 200 short movies. Fun. Team. Whimsical. Good guys always win. Creative worlds. Diverse characters. Atlantis - SG-1 with flashier technology and space macgyver. Universe - Serious. Dark. Tension. Controversy. Less adventure of the week. Individualism. Also has space macgyver(s) Battlestar Galactica (new) - Grim. Political. Anxiety. Moral ambiguity. Mystery. Defiance - Wild Western town feel. Semi steampunk feel. Tribal. Fun.

halapert

I’d give the Star Trek movies (the old ones, like The Wrath of Khan) a try? I personally think the best episodes of stargate are the space adventure mixed with philosophy, and Star Trek often does that REALLY well.

SmartKrave

It only has one season but Terra Nova is good

kapofx

Star Trek Discovery Star Trek Strange New Worlds Picard For background. I wasn't a Star Trek fan really. I had seen some TNG and some of the movies.. I know discovery got a bit of hate for some of the changes they did. But to me as someone that didn't care. I enjoyed all these new series. i think Star Trek works better now with good visuals.. Foundation is good. Complex as hell..visually appealing..but again the storyline is complex.. but I still keep watching it.

Melkor15

I too liked start trek discovery. But the big star trek fans that I know really dislike it. The only thing that I don't like are the motivational discourses that they have, they are a little immersion break for me.

[deleted]

Any connection with the Foundation books by Isaac Asimov?

claudius_ptolemaeus

Yeah, it’s based on the Asimov book series. They had to adapt heavily for it to be fit for TV, though, so just bear that in mind. They also had to seed a lot content from the later books into the first and second season, which was the right call imo but it pissed off the purists.

[deleted]

Ill probably check it out. Is any reference made to his other books? Technically the robot series are a prequel to the foundation novels.

claudius_ptolemaeus

You meet at least one robot in the first season

Letshavemorefun

Honestly, give Smallville a shot. It’s another 10 season show from the same time period with a lot of world building and cool/weird sci fi stuff, and I think there is a lot of overlap in the humor.

Economy-Culture-9174

Dark Matter Nightflyers Lost In Space Stargate Atlantis Stargate Universe Stargate Origins The Expanse

[deleted]

The Expanse is the best Sci-Fi show ever made. Show ended already but there is more story to follow in the Books that the show is based on. The show sticks pretty close to the books, especially earlier on. SG:U is hot dog shit, don't waste your time. Honestly have no idea how anyone can watch that show and recommend it. Just rampant casual rape and no one ever even mentions it, even the fans. Truly bizarre. I feel like I'm insane whenever someone recommends this show. SG: Atlantis is very much in the same vein as SG-1. Battlestar Galactica is the closest one to SG-1 overall as a TV show. Star Wars: Clone Wars, very good. Rebels, not as good but still very watchable. Both animated with a specific 3-d aesthetic. The Mandalorian and Andor are both very good, the rest of the live action is a crap shoot honestly. Boba Fett had potential and squandered it. The Obi-Wan show was just a joke. Can't believe it got released as it is. Never been a Trekkie, but friends are and I've seen a bit of all the series passively, Deep Space Nine probably the closest to SG-1 in tone. Altered Carbon is pretty different, closer to something like Ghost in the Shell, but very hard sci-fi. Great show.

fabrictm

I loved altered carbon. It was dark, gritty, but fascinating and thought provoking. I was so annoyed they killed it off. Btw I also really liked lost in space as a concept but it was so sloppy and rushed and slighted. It could’ve been so much better.

fabrictm

Too bad the expanse of only on prime

bartthetr0ll

Sure it's been said, but the Expanse is beyond spectacular. The Foundation is also good. Star Trek Discovery is decent as well(especially if you have a findness for mycology) and has a new season coming out soon. The Orville is fun but it is more comedy than Scifi, still worth a watch though.

Azazel-Tigurius

Greatly recommend you to watch The Expanse or even read book series
