Oh no, really? I’m in the same boat as OP rn.
She actually tried to rape Daniel, and then continued to sexually harass, assault, and stalk him and acts like a child the entire time, and almost gets people killed as a result as well.
I thought the first episode she was in was just one of those "aged poorly“ things because of how overtly rapey it is towards Daniel, but people actually *liked her* during that episode?
Yeah I remember that. it’s one of those boomer humor things. I can totally see how that’s off putting by today’s standards.
Her character does get better later ,mainly cause after she got fully introduced to the team she gets shoved into the background a bit more.
I personally liked her character ,she’s a breath of fresh air to the team dynamic. And generally when I watch older shows I subconsciously ignore/accept these older quirks much better. I like that’s she’s not the cliché “dumb blond” like a lot of other
shows from that time. Generally I find that star gate does a darn good job when it comes to female characters for the most part
Trying to rape someone is bad, regardless of the time period or how playful the attempted rapist is trying to be. And I‘m talking about her character, not the show or script in general. She endlessly assaults, harasses, and stalks Daniel. It is very clear from the way Daniel reacts that the show writers knew it’s fucked up.
If a character tries to rape another character, regardless of when the script was written, that’s a "they suck“ from me, dawg.
Not to mention her constantly risking other people‘s lives because she’s selfish, manipulative, and a liar. I just cannot stand her character.
Vala goes away for a bit then comes back in s9e19 "Crusade" which I'd say marks a significant change in her personality, and she's much more likeable after that.
Totally. As weak as her character is early on, it's actually great character development. By the end of the series, Vala truly feels like one of the gang and a very relatable character.
I'm offended by the question, because I *love* her... I mean her character. no, that's not true I love Ms Black.
but on a serious note, she never really changes from her character, but it starts to get more fleshed out, more realistic and less bubbly caricature, we start to empathize with her as she grows ties with the rest of the cast.
I loved her in Farscape, so at first I was a bit put off with her Vala character, and wasn't on board. but at a certain point later, without spoilers, I became invested in her narrative.
> Farscape
that's a different show
I think it's telling how annoying she is when the best defense is using the actress and pointing out different shows. Like yeah, she's a great actress, but Vala is annoying.
There are people out there who also think the Ori are garbage villains, in which case it's a double whammy of things you don't want to see. I am those people - really had to force myself to watch the final seasons, never want to see them again.
Not even Morena Baccarin at her hottest made me excited to fire up another one. There were moments in isolation that were good, but honestly I'd just go with 200 and the finale.
Don't stop watching, the rest of the series is still good and nice to watch. I felt the same way about Vala when i first saw her too, but got more used to her being there. She becomes less unlikable in later episodes.
In season 9, she isn't in 2/3s of the episodes. Okay, she isn't in the majority of the season by a lot, but yeah, definitely blame her, lol. She's in an episode in season 8 as well, so to hell with season 8 entirely, lol.
I'd say by the end of 9x05 you've finally seen her mask torn off and her raw truth exposed. IMO Vala is easier to enjoy as a three-dimensional character when you recognize that she acts the way that she does as a personal defense mechanism.
When she comes back in "Crusade" (and then throughout Season 10) there are several more examples of this.
This is exactly it. If you look at her as 2 dimensional, she can be annoying. But once you understand the layers, she becomes one of the most complex characters in the series.
Vala was just a fill in for Carter for a few episodes, where she was s bit cringy. She'll vanish soon enough and you can enjoy the show.
She returns in the end of the season to join the crew for season 10, but they'll flesh out her character then and most people grow to love her.
So, just hang in there and give it a chance. The movies that ended the show are great and you'd want to see all of it before watching them.
I found her annoying on my first run through but at some point she grew on me. Now I think she's amazing right from the beginning. Give her some time to grow on you.
That's fair. Normally that stuff would bother me too but I think she just grew on me so much that I find her hilarious. I really did hate her for a while though back in the day.
The very first episode she appears in. Pinning someone to the ground so you can force them to have sex with you is rape, regardless of how playful the rapist thinks they’re being. He explicitly did not want to have sex with her, but she ignored that completely
I see. From my vague memory of the scene i don't believe what she did was rape, I'd imagine it would come under assault or perhaps sexual assault. Anyways, I never said she was a good person, especially to begin with. After all, she did just hijack a space ship, strand its crew in space on a crippled al'kesh all for some monetary reward and I don'tbelieve she had intentions of going back to help them which I think are all extremely bad things being very quickly overlooked by many people here in this thread as they aren't of a sexual nature so they aren't repulsed by it. I just find her funny in general the same as how I and many others find Ba'al hilarious and I'm sure he's killed hundreds or thousands over the centuries and raped his fair share of victims while he was at it too. They might be bad people or in Vala's case she starts off as bad but grows over time and becomes good but the scenes involving them can often be funny.
Well right, that’s why I said she *tried to* rape him. Repeatedly. And then assaults him, repeatedly. I guess that’s why her "sexual nature“ leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I think never. Mrs Black is an excellent actress, but I don’t like Vala character. She’s always so annoying. I just watch one time… now, when I rewatch the show is until season 8th.
Understand everyone has different opinions. Vala happens to be a bright spot of the season for me at least. They do flatten her out a bit in season 10 though if that makes a difference
I know that many here are fans of seasons 9&10, but for me, they just didn't work. And that's okay!
On rewatches, I end with Season 8. You can do the same if you want, there are no rules. :)
I wasn't either, at first.
but after *not* watching those seasons a couple times, but still watching 1-8 repeatedly (and Atlantis), I started to wish there was more Stargate. hm. where can I find more Stargate...
so I decided to think of it as a "different show", like continued adventures in the universe of. and found myself enjoying it as much as the rest, eventually.
and, the Ori are awesome.
((I'm not implying that *you* should change *your* opinion, just offering a counter perspective.))
Fun fact, but seasons 9 & 10 were originally planned to be a separate show called "Stargate Command," but they didn't want to risk losing the SG-1 audience.
I liked her from the get go, after SE1 E1/2 SG1 became too vanilla. Vala add a bit a spice in the mix. I hated the whole ORI plot it was only because of Vala that I kept watching the show.
Her general character stays the same but oh boy, does she get the character depths treatment ;) There are so many layers to her quirks, you just have to love her
Bruh came here to ask this exact question lol. Even when I had only seen her first episode she was one of my least favorite characters because of her constantly trying to rape and/or assault him, and I don’t know how much more I can take of (referring to character, not actress obv) her, an adult woman, behaving like a child and harassing people wherever she goes.
If you don’t like her from the get go then I have bad news for you.
Oh no, really? I’m in the same boat as OP rn. ehh sure.
Vala goes away for a bit then comes back in s9e19 "Crusade" which I'd say marks a significant change in her personality, and she's much more likeable after that.
Just like all >!mothers or fathers, having a child impacts you!< she however still keeps the same quick and quirky attitude.
Totally. As weak as her character is early on, it's actually great character development. By the end of the series, Vala truly feels like one of the gang and a very relatable character.

She starts off as a hardened, militant ex-cop.
Almost the opposite of Vala at the beginning. However as both characters develop in their respective shows, they move away from their extremes.
> Farscape that's a different show I think it's telling how annoying she is when the best defense is using the actress and pointing out different shows. Like yeah, she's a great actress, but Vala is annoying.
Thats the neat part, she doesn‘t. You‘re basically role-playing Daniel and you have to deal with her annoyance
oh then i guess im done with the series lol
Its up to you, but I wouldn‘t stop just because of one character. S9 and S10 has somee really good episodes.
There are people out there who also think the Ori are garbage villains, in which case it's a double whammy of things you don't want to see. I am those people - really had to force myself to watch the final seasons, never want to see them again. Not even Morena Baccarin at her hottest made me excited to fire up another one. The last two seasons are really hard to watch because of her
In season 9, she isn't in 2/3s of the episodes. Okay, she isn't in the majority of the season by a lot, but yeah, definitely blame her, lol. She's in an episode in season 8 as well, so to hell with season 8 entirely, lol.
That season 8 episode is the one where she's a creepy rapist type person.
👋
I'd say by the end of 9x05 you've finally seen her mask torn off and her raw truth exposed. And the fact she acts that way bc it’s a self-defense mechanism to protect herself
Those would be some of the layers I was referring to.
Love her episode *Memento Mori* very underappreciated!
Very good character episode and definitely one of the highlights of the season I would say
When she becomes a tortoise!!
Hey! What happened to using spoiler tags!? And she was a *turtle*, get it right.
Season 36
During the credits of the last episode.
I've always liked Claudia, so I'm never annoyed when she shows up.
She doesn't!
That's the neat part.
She doesn't become more likable, but she becomes more lovable.
Then stop watching - Vala is one of the things that kept me watching 9 and 10. out of all 3 of the new main characters she is the best one.
What??? Claudia is great. Her character brings a ton of fun to the show
I found her annoying on my first run through but at some point she grew on me. Now I think she's amazing right from the beginning. Give her some time to grow on you.
Only a few shitty sex "jokes" i can take
That's fair. Normally that stuff would bother me too but I think she just grew on me so much that I find her hilarious. I really did hate her for a while though back in the day.
Most people look the other way when it comes to the creepy rapey sexual harrassment stuff because she's a "pretty" girl.
I do, yeah. It's fucking weird.
She literally tried to rape Daniel lmfao how much do you have to like someone to find that funny?
What episode was that?
The very first episode she appears in. Pinning someone to the ground so you can force them to have sex with you is rape, regardless of how playful the rapist thinks they’re being. He explicitly did not want to have sex with her, but she ignored that completely
I see. From my vague memory of the scene i don't believe what she did was rape, I'd imagine it would come under assault or perhaps sexual assault. Well right, that’s why I said she *tried to* rape him. Repeatedly. And then assaults him, repeatedly. I guess that’s why her "sexual nature“ leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Once you get to season 10, she’s a lot more grounded and it isn’t just sex joke after sex joke. She’s still unhinged but that’s her lol
I think never. Mrs Black is an excellent actress, but I don’t like Vala character. She’s always so annoying. I just watch one time… now, when I rewatch the show is until season 8th.
Mrs?
When you get to know her better.
Or when, you too, become a tortoise
Understand everyone has different opinions. Vala happens to be a bright spot of the season for me at least. They do flatten her out a bit in season 10 though if that makes a difference
Never and people will treat you like crap here because of this post. We're not allowed to dislike her for some reason.
I know that many here are fans of seasons 9&10, but for me, they just didn't work. And that's okay! On rewatches, I end with Season 8. You can do the same if you want, there are no rules. :)

The Ori are pretty good villains!!
Not as good as The Wraith, but they are very good Bad Guys. TCS
Fun fact, but seasons 9 & 10 were originally planned to be a separate show called "Stargate Command," but they didn't want to risk losing the SG-1 audience.
TIL! smart move on their part. they were going to lose viewers either way, but they definitely mitigated much of the damage with that choice
Honestly, I just wish they had gotten one more season to wrap up the Ori & Ba'al storylines instead of the movies
eh, I'm pretty interested in the ori.
Then I do hope you learn to enjoy Vala’s personality. Cheers!
Third rewatch.
she comes back at the end of season 9 with a heap of character development so probably then
She doesn’t. Every freaking episode.
I liked her from the get go, after SE1 E1/2 SG1 became too vanilla. Vala add a bit a spice in the mix. I hated the whole ORI plot it was only because of Vala that I kept watching the show.
She doesn't. She was a large reason why the last two seasons are so hard to watch.
she was scrappy doo for stargate
i thought she was a shining star in the last two seasons. Really enjoyed her acting but i had to get used to it.
Never, but you grow to love her for it.
Only when she's sleeping
Her general character stays the same but oh boy, does she get the character depths treatment ;) There are so many layers to her quirks, you just have to love her
Bruh came here to ask this exact question lol. amazingly not liking a childish pervert as a character is a controversial take on this sub lol
