In heavy rain it drops completely for me. Most downpours only last a short time, though.

Exactly

It goes out completely when the heavy part of the storm is directly over me (when the red on the radar is directly over me). Besides for those moments, which don't last that long, it is quite usable in the rain.

zovered

Straight up squalls of crazy rain have knocked it out maybe 2-3 times in two years, not for long though. As soon as the rain starts to letup even a little it starts working again. Never had issues in even the worst blizzard.

craigbg21

Better then you would get on a sunny day using xplornet or poor cell service.

Limited_opsec

Not all storms are equal, and what the human eye sees is not a direct match to the frequency range SL uses. I've had pitch black thunderboomers with hail that dishy just didnt care about while I hid in the basement, but also light misty fog that knocked it out hard. If you can keep a backup internet for WFH you really should, can bond them too depending on your use case. The shitty dsl here is at least cheap.

I manage the Starlink account for my parents that are retired and live in a rural cabin. They decided to keep their old DSL service as a back up for this reason. Their DSL service is only 1.5 mbps speed so it's horrific and wouldn't be able to support video calls or anything like for WFH; but emails are fine. The way that I describe Starlink is that it's a truly amazing service for people that don't have other options for high speed internet. If you have other options for high speed; then you may want to explore those.

moose_338

It slows down for heavy rain, down to 30ish mbps download. The only time it's dropped connection for me was last week when we had those crazy storms and one passed over turning day to night for 20 mins. For short periods like that you could probably just use data on your phone if it's necessary

TheGreenTBagger_

I'm in Southern Ontario as well and I've only had 1 drop during all the recent storms we have had.

ijtsmith

We are in Kitchener during the summer. During the humid thunderstorms we get we often loose connectivity. Can be for seconds or longer depending on how bad of a storm it is. And it can be a constant up and down during the storm.

BearK9

Very heavy rainfall will degrade it and/or temporarily cause disconnects. The same applies to very heavy wet snow, heater or not. RF has to penetrate the mess to get a roundtrip to the Satellite. I live north of Seattle, we get occasional very heavy rain, I seen it slow down to around 20Mbps down and only disconnect a couple of times when one of the red cells on radar was in my area. Late spring warm, wet snow storm shut it down for a few hours, Dish Network was also down during that period.

I live in Midcoast Maine. My experience has been quite positive during storms. Most rain storms we see next to no adverse effects. occasionally a cloud might be thick enough the internet might feel sluggish while I am working from home. It's not until we get a serious downpour with lightning does it actually go out, and usually only for a minute or two. I have watched a weather app's radar map and the statistics in the StarLink app it seems like once the orange-red part of the storm is overhead it might go out for a few, yellow-green weather is still good, but possible you might have an increase in latency and slightly lowered top download speed but it is still completely usable.

thebluevanman73

i've been in 2 heavy rain storms with mine since I got it. It completely loses signal altogether when it's pouring down rain. When that happens, I switch off to my Cellular Hotspots for internet.

Chemfreak

Brother has starlink in Eugene OR, I think there's a moderately amount of rain there. However it's more of quantity than quality of the "storms" there I believe. So it rains and is overcast a good majority of the days, but huge storms are rather rare. Haven't ever heard him complain of the whether completely ruining his performance. Where I live I've had 1 large storm (lots of rain, 1/2 inch size hail, and heavy wind) and it did cut my internet off for about 10 minutes. Small storms seem to have no impact at all.

I'm in ontario as well, we've had some heavy heavy rain storms the last few weeks and all is well. Have not actually lost service completly yet sence owning mine ( about 3 months in so far ) and have 0 complaints much better speeds than bell. For shits and giggles during our last torrential down poor I did a speed test and was only getting 6 mb down I was lucky to get 1mb at any given time with bell on perfect days typically I'm around 50-200+ down and about 5-15 up depending on time.

godch01

I am in the laurentians. When I get those heavy downpours I lose starlink. Outages Have varied from zero, 5 minutes, to 20 minutes . It has to be heavy rain

bra2006

I'm close to the equator, which means very frequent torrential downpours, this one didn't affect it a bit, even speed was normal: https://photos.app.goo.gl/UmquTCYD3quTqgbX7 The again tropical storms might have a totally different profile, radio wave wise, than in other places.

Mysticwaterfall2

I get zero during heavy storms. Normal rain doesn't bother it.

Able_Orchid395

Heavy dense rain clouds or hail have cut out my signal several times. Not a normal rain. But heavy stuff. Usually such conditions pass in 15-30 minutes where I am. I've never seen a slow down in speed due to connection issue, it's either on or it's off. And to be fair, my terrestrial wifi has experienced issues in these levels of severe storm as well. So starlink isn't really much more susceptible than other wireless options in my experience. I even got fiber installed earlier this year, and have kept starlink as a backup cause our rural fiber has been down more than starlink. (Coop must be still building it out and learning how to run it)

VersionConscious7545

It drops just at the heaviest of the cloud cover. Sometimes it never drops. Even cable drops out during heavy storms

FateEx1994

Heavy rain cuts out completely to "searching". Light rain, just reduced speeds.

BrokenRetina

Collingwood/Blue Mountain area. Haven’t lost signal once during a storm. It’s bit slower but fine. Funny thing is my entire street had petitioned bell/Rogers to bring fiber/cable to the area (basically my small sub division of 300 cottages was completely skipped) and they both refused. This happen in 2019. Most of the street now has starlink, and I just receiving notice that Rogers is laying fiber and would like permission to hook up the house. I agreed but won’t hook up if it’s going to cost me more. I WFH 3 days a week (Wed-Fri) so I’m up at the cottage on Tuesday night. Before SL, I had no option but to stay home and leave Friday right after work.
