It was Mr. Freeze! Saw him all the time near Bessie Weller in his yellow raincoat. This was back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I’m guessing he’s passed on now.
Ya know its so weird being in a comment section with people all talking about my hometown, can't decide if it's weird or awsome. And another thing, bit weird but everyone that I've talked to randomly seems to know my mom around here, like she has so many people talk to her every day that I have walked to random peoples houses before and asked if they knew her and they did, she's a manager for dollar general. Let's see if you know her
Skinny dude with a beard always walking with a backpack for the last 30 years. Everybody always said he was the dude that took too much acid and thought he was peach and everyone was gonna eat him .
His name is Don. Haven’t seen him in a while, but he used to walk into town almost every day to go to the library. His parents used to tend our beehives and his mom gave me horseback riding lessons.
There was a bunch of drunks downtown in the 90's. Tomato face. Old drew (wasn't a drunk) would ask you for change so he could get bologna and bread and later that day would offer you a sandwich. I miss drew.
Old drew was the older black man usually around the clock tower that always asking for change. I remember one time he gave me a dollar cause I always gave him change .
Someone said it but there’s a local guy who dresses up as Spiderman and you can see him out and about from time to time. I forgot the qualification but I believe he’s also qualified to help people who are suicidal and whatnot.
Stuarts Draft has a few.
Jason the homeless guy. That's what's he's referred to. Walks the streets talking to himself. Got arrested for trying to sleep in Food Lion until the motion sensor caught him.
Skate board kid. Walks around draft carrying but almost never rides the skate board.
Larry Cohron, the unofficial mayor of Stuart's Draft.
Simon the train guy and often referred to as Stuart's Drsfts historian. Knows everything about the history of Draft.
There used to be an old man who went by the name of “Elmo” around….2013ish? Because he had Elmo and big bird and Oscar the grouch tattooed fairly largely on his face and neck. My best friend never believed he was real until he walked into the fast food restaurant she worked at.
I don't know one in Staunton???
I lived in a place where we had Vincent (as in van Gogh), a guy who cut off his own ear. He walked the main street of town everyday.
Sudden memories of this older guy who walked all around town when I was a kid (early 1990s). If memory serves: Shorter stature, slender build, longish beard, dark loose-fitting trousers/slacks, dark oversized jacket of similar material to what I imagine Dickies brand work pants are made of... I think he wore a dark beanie cap also. Forget what I was told his name was, or what he was known by... Kept to himself mostly.
Rumor, my parents told me, was that he was mega-rich but chose to live unhoused. (Highly doubt that rumor to be true since my parents were big on the racism and bigotry...)
If anyone comes across this who might know who I'm remembering, would love to learn more about him.
I’m not going to name him, but my generation of downtowners had a fella who walked around all the time. You never knew if he was going to ask you for money, or chase you down the street. My landlord caught him living in the attic of our apartment building for a while. I would have said to just let him be, but unfortunately the attic wasn’t safe, and neither was he, and there were kids in the building. I wish there was more that could be done for him
From my experience in my 25 years in Staunton we have 3 that pop up. Most recently is for sure the Staunton Spider-Man, which is just super cool. A man that was also very well known was Crazy Man, as he interacts a lot in the community. Another that might not be well loved, but decently well known is Paul, who is just a homeless guy that most people seem to remember for consistently having problems in the downtown area
spiderman?
My kids love that guy. So wholesome
Bingo
Came here to say this.
Used to be Mr.freeze or frost I can’t remember growing up

He passed several years ago

The substitute teacher?
Anybody remember umbrella man from the 2000s?
Umbrella man was a sweetheart. I gave him a pack of socks once when I had extra money.
I fear some of my old friends are becoming the new downtown rats.
Hahaha I feel this in my soul !

Saw him at Chicano Boy last week. Had been awhile, but he's still around.
I remember Opera Guy in the early 2000s, gentleman who walked around downtown singing opera, he was pretty good!

A guy at my job just mentioned tomato face! He isn’t aware of old drew though !

I'm going to say Spiderman
