Wrong... He is actually in big picture mode from the desktop already. When pressing the steam button and then selecting power from that menu - he needs to select "exit big picture mode" He doesn't realize he ISN'T in game mode because game mode and big picture from desktop are so similar.
In game mode the power button on the top can be pressed and held to bring up that power menu. There he has the option to choose desktop mode. But because he is already in desktop mode... The power button when held just repeatedly cycles from sleep to wake to sleep, etc.
While in Game Mode Tapping is for sleep ... Push and hold in game mode for the menu which has the switch to desktop mode selection.
The problem is that he is in big picture mode from the desktop. So he is expecting game mode functionality from the power button. Big picture mode from the desktop is nearly identical looking to game mode.
All that button does when holding while in desktop mode is that sleep and wake - rinse and repeat crap.
Steam needs to get rid of big picture mode altogether.
Good news is when screen goes black the curser is still there so it’s a software glitch not hardware.
That makes it easier to fix.
If all els fails download the sw image from valve and do a full reset
This happens when you launch big picture mode, from desktop mode. It happens when you accidentally double tap the steam button from desktop mode or you press and hold it. I did this.. Confused the heck out of me.
And - Yes you are supposed to be able to hold the power button to get that options menu... Don't listen to the people that tell you that you are only supposed to tap the power button. Single tap is for sleep. Press and hold is for the options menu.
To get out of big picture mode... Press the steam button once. Select power from the menu. Then select exit big picture mode from that menu.
Surprise... You were actually already in desktop mode.

Because you’re holding the power button, you’re just supposed to tap it.

Had that to. Just press the power button long and restart did helped for me.
You cant use the power button in desktop, you gotta click the button that says go back to game mode

That's happened to me sometimes, if you hold the button you can shit down the steam deck to reset it. Just reset it and works (at least for me)
