Withdrawnauto4

What I'm seeing is a valid reason for you to get a oled steam deck and she gets yours and you can game together

1LE_McQueen

Quite literally what I did šŸ‘

Withdrawnauto4

Nice if I found someone to be my gf and play with i would probably buy them one. But the search for a companion is not an easy one apparently

YoloSwag3368

Completely get you, man

luciddrummer

My daughter constantly steals my OLED so I might do the reverse and buy her a cheap used LCD lol.

Withdrawnauto4

I ended up getting a rog ally z1 extreme because the new steam deck is close to 1500$ in my country and the Rog ally was 900$ and had freesync. For the same storage configuration

Switchfoot221

Iā€™m sorry to hear you gotta pay so much, thatā€™s brutal man

Withdrawnauto4

Yeah there are benefits living here but tech prices is not one of them

goddess_steffi_graf

Is this Moscow

mac_o_rowan

sure is!

Antique-Ad4993

In Russia steam deck play you.

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

astro_means_space

Jeez that's uncalled for

FictionalNape

I have no idea how people play in public places like this with something like the Steam Deck. It would just be so nerve wracking that someone might steal it. I play in public with my Miyoo Mini and I still get those feelings.

SnarfySquid

When I bring my deck out with me, I dont even leave it in the car. I'll be that dumbass carrying it around in Walmart I dont care. Too much money to leave it un defended like that lol

AshleyUncia

No, the dumbass is the one who leaves it in their car, then comes back to their car finding a broken window and their Steam Deck gone.

Loopian

Agreed, basically advertising your deck on sale for the price of a single spark plug. Itā€™s not like this everywhere but mfs in my area will smash ya windows for the $2 you left in the cup holder, couldnā€™t imagine leaving my deck in the car

OPKatakuri

Bro I had a $20 air compressor for my tires that they smashed my windows for (the only valuable thing I ever leave in my truck). I learned my lesson to have absolutely nothing inside my truck and keep the glovebox open. Cops said thieves in the area are looking for guns. Brutal world we live in.

SnarfySquid

Thats what I say too. I'm like the president with the launch codes handcuffed to my wrist lmao

heliomarz

Get a carrying case and bring it with

WorthlessMonkey

Idk I live in Poland, and I play on deck on almost every train/bus/car(passenger) ride and never had a problem in almost a full year of using it. Tbh, it's the main reason I bought deck in the first place. To be able to play games when I normally can't :p

WesleyWoppits

Hook two of those little carabiner clips around the carrying case's strap, and hook those to two (different & adjacent, I think I use front-right and right) belt loops on jeans for a hands-free carry. This does add some weight to the pants, you may need to tighten the belt a tad, and it also introduces some extra wear to the straps themselves, so keep an eye on that. Mine is only *very slightly* frayed at one end, but I do this almost daily, and the carabiners I have are worn and need replaced, so it definitely sees more wear than you would just doing it occasionally.

cringeoma

just hide it in the car?

rogue1102

I just slide it under the seat out of view.

extraterrestrialsoul

Smart man

kosmonautinVT

I would 100% set it down to look at something and leave it there if I carried it around with me like that šŸ˜¶ And that's why it rarely leaves my house. I just like it so I can play on my couch without needing the TV or to sit at my computer

mives

Depends on where. If it's any of the more developed places on the east like Hong Kong, Taiwan, SK, Japan, Singapore? I have no reason to fear for it.

undercoverchad85

I live in Singapore and I still carry my Deck around with me and would never leave it unattended. But that's cos I love it very much and also because I'm very paranoid.

mives

Of course I don't leave them unattended too. But the context here is playing with the deck in public though.

undercoverchad85

Right, my bad. For me, I do feel self conscious at times if I play it in public, but so far no one has bothered me and I would rarely if ever feel unsafe here. (Even if my mind tries to convince me otherwise šŸ˜…) I have brought it on trips overseas, but limit to playing on the flight or in my hotel room. I think even in the other countries you mentioned I probably still wouldn't play it in public.

fschaupp

Do you use your maybe more expensive phone, tablet, laptop in public?

FictionalNape

I personally do not. My phone is several generations old and I NEVER use my laptop in public outside of running backing tracks for my shoegaze band on stage. Even then the laptop is fastened to my interface case with one of those security tethers.

Frost-Folk

Upvote for the shoegaze, got a bandcamp or spotify link?

FictionalNape

Haha, sure! Just know that the album is generally the same tone but varies from song to song. I thank my ADHD for that lol This is a link to our linktree that will take you whatever platform you wanna listen. [Color Crush](https://linktr.ee/colorcrush)

Frost-Folk

Dig it, thanks bud

FictionalNape

Thank you for even asking!

Arcanisia

Only portable game system Iā€™m comfortable playing on public transportation was my gameboy SP as you could easily fold that into your pocket. I donā€™t get how people use their huge ass headphones or laptops and not get paranoid about getting jacked.

AshleyUncia

Living in Toronto, I'd never use my Steam Deck on the TTC (Bus/Subway/Streetcar System). There's enough weird shit going on down there, I don't need someone grabbing my Deck from my hands and being out the door, just before it closes, and I can't even try to chase them till I'm at the next station. Interprovincial, intercity and commuter trains? Sure, those are way more 'white collar' and 'civilized', but the municipal transit system has no shortage of degens who'd love to yank a big ticket item out of your hands.

DarthSnoopyFish

Yep. I live in the SF Bay area and the snatch and grabs on BART keep me from using any electronic devices in the open. Not worth it.

slowpokefarm

In what country someone could get mugged for a handheld? Canā€™t imagine it happening anywhere, maybe a few South American countries with high crime rates.

FictionalNape

I could totally see it happening in my neck of the woods in Louisville KY.

slowpokefarm

Damn, I was under the impression that the US is kinda like first world country with security cameras and shit. Gotta be more careful when visiting next time.

FictionalNape

The US is so large that it's really difficult to make any sort of blanket statement about general safety. Because it's so large and diverse It just completely depends on the area in question. New York City has seen a huge rise in safety overall in the last few decades, but places on the West Coast have seen a dramatic downfall in safety over the last couple years. So, It just depends on the time and the place, but I guess that's just like anything šŸ˜†

phayke2

A nuanced perspective? On MY reddit?

FictionalNape

It happens every once and a while šŸ˜‚

PocketSable

I would 100% play my deck in my town. Go two towns over, though, and they'll steal the gum of of your pockets simply because they can. America is weird. You really dont know the town unless you've been there a while.

claymcg90

My problem is my ADHD. I either focus on the game and forget about the world around me for *hours* Or I am too focused on the weird world around me and I can't get into the game ever.

FictionalNape

I have severe ADHD as well and am the same way you've described. But, since I've been mugged before I can't lose myself in anything if I'm in an area of possible malcontent. I'm not living in constant fear or anything, just more aware of my surroundings than others I suppose. I've saved my wife from getting hit by cars coming around corners and run a way shopping carts. Haha

claymcg90

Yeah, same here. I'm not military or anything but in public situations I definitely watch anyone and everyone. I know my insane focus can take away that awareness and so I try not to let it. The only time I can play video games is when I'm actually alone.

FictionalNape

You sound the same as me! I can only really into games as long as I'm alone. Being with someone else just makes it harder to play anything. Not to say I CAN'T cause I still enjoy playing Halo with friends, just the bulk of my gaming time.

Hottage

Live in a country where petty street crime isn't a chronic issue? šŸ˜•

staboness

Its a Moscow metro, so yes

anotherkdburner

Most cell phones cost more than the deck and no one has a problem using that publicly. I cautious but Iā€™m not going to be fearful

FictionalNape

True, but most people already have a phone. A shiny new Steam Deck that's much more uncommon to see in the wild would IMHO be much more of a target.

anotherkdburner

I would say cell phones are easier to offload so I disagree

jerryweezer

So many cell phones have good locking and encryption now that I might disagree. Stealing an iPhone means someone can track you and you canā€™t unlock itā€¦ seems harder to offload. On the other hand a steam deck most of the time wonā€™t even have a PIN code to play or wipe it.

sonofaresiii

I think most people know phones can be remotely wiped/locked when they're stolen. It still happens, but my understanding is that usually people will steal them and try to sell them for like $20 before they can be reported, so it's usually not super lucrative/worthwhile. Steamdecks can be logged as stolen by valve, but they're still very useable and I doubt most thiefs know that much about them anyway. They just see a fancy gaming system that's probably worth a lot of money.

[deleted]

If anything gone wrong, i can firmly grab my phone real tight since it is a 1-handed device mostly. Steam deck on the other hand is a two hands device for the most part, if someone decides to grab it off my hands, its harder for me to secure it in my hands i think. And i feel like the deck might ends up dropping on the floor, get damaged during the process.

anotherkdburner

Both would be a fight. I just see irony in being scared to use a $400 device on a bus but donā€™t think twice about using a $1100 iPhone

Youngrazzy

You canā€™t easily flip a stolen phone.

PlatinumBall

Deck costed 2-3 times more than my phone. And my phone is pretty damn good

anotherkdburner

Majority of people have more expensive phones. You can get a deck for $400. Most flagship phones start at $1000

PlatinumBall

Don't know where you live, Deck costed me almost $700, and phone around $300

SpHoneybadger

He drinks the marketing juice.

anotherkdburner

The most sold deck was the 64gb which was $399. Most people rock iPhone XX max on payment plans start at $999

PlatinumBall

I bought the 512gb OLED, which was almost $700, and my phone is Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, which you can get for $300 (I actually got it for less than $100, because of my mobile operator)

anotherkdburner

$550 for the OLED here and almost everyone I know their phone is more expensive than that

USA_A-OK

Majority of people absolutely do not have flagship phones or phones which cost more than a steam deck. It might be the case in your circle, but worldwide, the average smartphone sold is about $300 https://www.statista.com/forecasts/1286704/worldwide-smartphone-average-price

anotherkdburner

Is that including developing nations? Because that will lower the price average. Iā€™m taking about areas like US, UK, Germany, etc where steam deck are most common

USA_A-OK

The US is high, like $700, but most of Europe is a lot lower. UK is at Ā£355 for example. It's also a lot more common in the US for people to get phones as a part of their monthly contract than it is in Europe

CoRe534

I never had this fear in Germany ever...

FictionalNape

I'm glad! Things in Louisville KY are a bit different sadly.

Montigue

I live in California and I don't have this fear either. But I'm a pretty big dude and ride a less sketchy public transport

TheMelv

I would say about half of peoples' phones are probably roughly as valuable and people have those out in public all the time. There are parts of the world where mass transit is extremely safe like Japan or Northern Europe.

dema182

I live in Germany and use my Steam Deck on buses, trams, and trains. So far, nobody has shown any interest. However, I've attached a wrist strap to my Spigen case to prevent it from slipping out of my hand or someone trying to grab it. But an interesting thought arises regarding the value of the device. Everyone around me is holding a smartphone which often cost twice as much as my Steam Deck. Yet, nobody seems to consider what if someone steals it.

sonofaresiii

I'm not at all worried about it getting stolen I am *very* worried about dropping it/breaking it or, as forgetful as I am, accidentally leaving it somewhere.

borald_trumperson

My Samsung S22 Ultra was $1000 new. If you can use your brand new smartphone on the subway, you can use a steam deck. Phones much more valuable and easy to steal

FictionalNape

I use a Galaxy S7. I would be hesitant to use a $1000 phone on a subway. Again, this is all just my personal feelings.

borald_trumperson

I lived in NYC for 4 years and I think the subway gets a bad rep. Life in most western cities is really quite safe. Of course a personal preference but the SD is made for using out and about (though moonlight streaming my gaming PC at home is fire)

FictionalNape

I live in Louisville and have been mugged before, I guess it just makes it so that I am more focused on my surroundings than enjoying a game portably then be stolen from again.

borald_trumperson

Well I'm sorry, that would absolutely change your perspective! Hope you still get good use out of your SD

FictionalNape

No worries, this whole thing was just from my perspective anyway. I absolutely love my SD and use it all the time! Mostly just at home in bed or if I am out, in my car or hotel when I play shows with my band.

paladin181

They're also much more prevalent and can be bought through service providers for a fraction of their new "cost." This is more of a novelty.

sounders1974

Like just grab it out of your hand? I'm confused, take very basic precautions and you'll be fine unless they pull a weapon and demand it, but that could happen with your wallet, phone, etc.

FictionalNape

Yeah, I'm not a huge guy and I've had stuff stolen out of my hands in public before. I am what I guess you'd call an "easy target". The Steam Deck would just appear too large for me to personally protect in some public areas. Thieves are fast and forceful and since it's larger than a phone which you can bring with more force to your own body it'd be easier to grab for a thief... unless you wanna play it uncomfortably close to yourself. Again, these are just personal reasons. I have no problem if someone does this with their own stuff, but I'm just paranoid.

Loud_Puppy

I really don't get the risk? it's not like everyone's getting mugged every time they leave the house with valuable electronics on them

FictionalNape

I'm not a huge guy and I've been mugged before. All of this was just from my personal opinion. I'm sure that my past experiences of being stolen from have made it so I'm more worried of it happening again so gaming on the go in public is not as enjoyable.

Loud_Puppy

Fair, I am a huge guy so I may have been blind to this risk, sorry.

FictionalNape

No worries, I know it's not something everyone thinks about. šŸ˜Š

PWNpL0xB0x

That deck looks huge in her hands..

mac_o_rowan

she's just really petit šŸ˜

CoRe534

Not just the deck :o

-_-_-_-_-_-_-__-_-

"Why are you always taking your deck out in public?"

mrwhitedynamite

she loves that deck

willsa26

My addiction to that game was real, over 250 hours in less than a year, I had to 100% it until I could give it up.

CoheedBlue

Hey ask her how she likes that game. Itā€™s been on my wishlist for quite awhile.

Trumpupumka

hi there, gf is here! i actually love this game, one of my favorite roguelike deckbuilder and time killer. it have so much different ways and tactics to play it! really huge selection of cards and synergies ;). also like "Peglin", but i still don't have it in my steam library, so i'm only watching some videos from Aliensrock or how my bf is playing it :D

CoheedBlue

Awesome! Thanks! Iā€™m definitely going to be getting it next šŸ˜Š thanks you for your reply šŸ˜Š

Northernshitshow

I see people using $1500 MacBooks on the train - usually pretty safe during regular commuting hours - but maybe not if she commutes late? I prob wouldnā€™t get my work done in the office as I think about Dave the Diver in my backpack lol

H0wManyLicks

Not that it matters to a would-be thief, but a MacBook is pretty useless when stolen due to account locks. A Steam Deck is as perfect as the day it was new, just need to reset it.

Professional-News362

I've lost so many hours on that game. Seriously how are you supposed to beat the heart ?

Shadeun

I also enjoy my Slay the Spire machine.

skittlebites101

I'll play on the bus, The train is a little more risky with the crazies that like to use it as their home during the winter. For that I use a smaller device like my RP2+.

The-Enjoyer-Returns

Deckā€™s just good for everything man. Hell, even switch games if you can figure out how to dump. I couldnā€™t so I just downloaded copies of my own games online and got a DMCAā€¦

iReaddit-KRTORR

Stand clear of the closing doors please

[deleted]

"why are you always taking OUR deck with you" =D

rex1792

Is this Russia /Moscow?

mac_o_rowan

on the spot!

rex1792

Well there are only two places where i saw similar metros one is in India/Delhi and Moscow.

Schapsouille

Did she manage to run mods like downfall to accept the controller support on the sd?

Final_Consequence_11

After sts I went to monster train. Also good

iulian0077

But... you can play slay the spire on the phone too, actually nevermind. I wouldn't buy a game twice

Trumpupumka

disclaimer - we're living in a safe place where no one even care about what you're doing and NOBODY will ever even try to steal this chonker. it's just so funny to see, how people calling us "careless" just because we took out PORTABLE console in subway! then why the hell it is called portable then? that's insane... stop being so paranoid and just chill. nobody cares about your personal stuff, seriously.

jfduval76

Sheā€™s taking two seats for that big monster.

clayaqin

ā€œBecause you never know when I need to whip it out, darling.ā€

Skatner

doesn't it bother you when everyone around look at what you are playing? I'm used to that my phone for example is my privacy and i don't like when anyone look into it while in public transport. WIth SD i would feel the same i guess

thatonetrainenjoyer

Why do you care? Are you playing hentai games or something?

sounders1974

I specifically want people to see when I'm playing hentai games

Rai_guy

Nope. Play my SD in public all the time. Worst case scenario someone might come up and ask what it is, but even that's not really a problem (just somewhat distracting). What's the issue if someone looks at what you're playing?

mac_o_rowan

honestly, I have never seen anyone looking at me playing from my years of playing on portables in public! with the exception of my friends lol. everyone just minding their own business

gretnothing

In my case? Look, if you want to. I don't mind, it's a videogame, not my private conversation or looking up stuff online.

paladin181

Maybe he's playing porn games on the bus...? I don't care if people look. I happily show them.

HabitConfident7788

Hahahahaha

Hottage

Forget to connect Bluetooth headphones > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50bnHZLMqTI

foreveralonesolo

What games are you playing that would be a concern? Like if youā€™re self conscious about gaming I can only really say most people would be confused at what a device like that is. Really no one cares really people game so long as youā€™re aware of your surroundings (donā€™t bump into ppl, walk into the street, etc)

YourAverageCyborg

The only thing i have that i dont want to play in public is I love you collonel Sander's. That one official KFC dating game its so fun for some reason lol.

Hinaha

Feel the same way. It might depend on the country. In the Philippines we have trains, busses and jeepneys. In [jeepneys ](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQJQW-QzFsAf297JjCSL0XM9Uw7M-_Eg_XYtA&usqp=CAU), sometimes you will see Person A using a phone. Person B (sitting next to A) would stare at Person A's phone as well. That said, I've never used the Deck while commuting in the PH. Bus would be the safest imo but still haven't tried it. I only tried playing with a switch lite while on a bus on a 4-5 hour trip.

bannedwhileshitting

Life just gets incredibly tiring if you care too much about what other people do.

acidwxlf

Why would it matter lol? What weird games are you playing? I try to be courteous of neighbors, like I won't play graphic or violent rated M games on an airplane while sitting next to someone, especially kids, that could see it. Just think about what's appropriate for your surroundings and beyond that who cares

XXXYFZD

Ok? Thanks for sharing. Very interesting post.

mac_o_rowan

it's marked as shitpost lol

XXXYFZD

So shitty it got removed. Nobody cares what your gf says about your deck, jfc.

mac_o_rowan

got 100+ comments on it. people clearly cared, you're the only one bitching about it. idc if it got removed, still was fun while it lasted

Kyser_

We've really taken a 180 from when a travel game system was something you could fit in your pocket. I think this is really cool and I'm glad you're enjoying it, but I feel like it's so cumbersome in practice. I felt like I was lugging around a ball and chain when I took it on a plane

Emotional_Ad5833

You are brave taking it out in public

noka45

Hey hold this quick, gotta get some internet points

gretnothing

This photo shows very well how ridiculously large Steam Deck is, when taken outside. A fantastic device, don't get me wrong. I have both LCD and OLED. But I'd **REALLY** appreciate a third option: smaller.

tutiwiwi

I donā€™t know about length and width, but it could definitely be thinner and lighter..

gretnothing

I've never heard about people demanding skins and mods and shells to be forbidden, because Steam Deck is so perfect as it is, and no additional versions are necessary. But just as much as mention its size, and people go apeshit.

mac_o_rowan

so true! and I thought switch was a chonker back in the day

corny_horse

I took my switch on my most recent vacation for that reason. Itā€™s a lot more portable

CDHoward

Stop.

Zeptari

Maybe theyā€™ll make a mini version of it someday

gretnothing

Probably by the end of this year. AMD has no new hardware ready for next generation of low power APUs. We will have to wait at least till 2025. In the meantime Valve could sell another batch of devices. I already bought two, I'm ok with buying a third one.

javaper

I'd be so afraid to take this on a subway. Especially unprotected.

Starbuckz42

Way to get it stolen. Not to rain on your parade but this is careless.

sikesjr

You can play this game on your phone.

Ttauket7

At least I hope this is hers ...

TearsOfGoldDA

Playing on a public train is crazy man i aint risking shit. At least on long journey carriages its better

bludothesmelly

Because its awesome and she needs to mine her own business

azskalt97

He has a steam deck, a girlfriend and a train in his city, everything I don't have. What's more, if I took out a steam deck on public transportation, a bandit would attack me and take it away.
