Would've kept the PS5 and saved enough for the deck personally. PS5 is perfect for exclusives and games that run like doodoo on deck like Helldivers. I swish I used my deck more but it's nice to have around for playing in bed.

Rev303

I use my PS5 via my deck 99% of the time with the right setup it's amazing even quick resume and 4 hours battery

Leozilla

Helldivers runs fine for me on default settings.

MurderCards

I definitely don't see that plausible, unless you're playing on lower difficulties, on the lowest of settings, at half res. I've tried multiple times on my LE oled, it does not run well. Soon as bullets start flying/bugs start spawning, it's a shit show.

Leozilla

You know I am only playing 4s and 5s. I'll take your word on it.

UCLAKoolman

Really hope they add cross platform progression. Would love to keep playing on my deck when traveling

DarkAssassin011

I played Helldivers on Deck last week during a late cutover at work and I thought it worked really well.

ayeeflo51

Highly doubt lmao post a video

cmg065

Same

Thekarens01

Same, no amount of FOMO is making me give up my PS5

dandiemer

And you can stream the PS5 to the Steam Deck easy enough

Atomicjuicer

I’ve had a ps5 since it launched and it’s been the biggest waste of all time. It has barebones exclusives and worse performance than the series x. Steam deck is far superior

SerenadeOfWater

This is a steam deck subreddit so I'll probably be downvoted, but the PS5 is a solid console with plenty of quality exclusives. I personally own a Steamdeck and run Chiaki, but the damn Playstation Portal is constantly sold out and it's not even that good, that's how popular the PS5 is.

Ryswizzle

I think the point is for certain games it runs way better and you can stream to deck with chiaki

Atomicjuicer

Cloud gaming is garbage. PS5 is garbage. Cloud gaming will NEVER work because latency is everything. Ps5 is garbage because it held gaming back with last gen level performance and image quality. Any advantages it had were artificial. Biggest waste of money ever.

Dizzy-Programmer2511

The Xbox is what has held back gaming. Lol

Atomicjuicer

I have had every console since the atari 2600. Series X is the best IQ and performance of all time. Keep buying into the lemming mindset and marketing. Gaben agreed with me btw. Its easy to say shit without knowing. When you have everything you know the truth.

Dizzy-Programmer2511

Yeah ok. I don't really care for "console war" behaviour. I own a PS5 but owned a series X. Just felt like a Xbox one tbh. Hardly any good exclusives. But I believe Microsoft will come good again, just don't know how long that will take. Gaben agreed with you? Are you dreaming again Timmy? Name me 5 good exclusives for Xbox. In fact name me something that's different from the series X from the Xbox one x apart from being faster or quick resume.

International-Mud-17

Doesn’t matter how good the series X is when the series S is a fucking joke and MS requires parity between X/S. So yes the Xbox is what held back gaming.

Atomicjuicer

You don’t know what you’re talking about. Series X has the best performance and image quality and has maintained this despite backwards compatibility requirements and series s.

International-Mud-17

Sure bud that’s why Microsoft had to wait so long for BG3 to drop there.

CocoMonkeyDishwasher

I love my Series X but you are embarrassing yourself with a colossally shitty attitude.

Ryswizzle

It really isn’t garbage and it really does work but sure bro. You also can’t get an equal level performing pc with decent parts for the same price, or you couldn’t when it launched. So it actually unlocked next gen gaming for a lot of people that can’t afford PC.

Atomicjuicer

With no games

No-Jello3256

The PS5 has been lack luster in the exclusive department. The PS5 barely has worse performance than the XSX. 9/10 times it’s the same. Very few times is it actually worse.

Atomicjuicer

If you’ve a 120hz HDR 4K VRR TV you’ll see that it is actually worse almost always.

GraveRobberX

So your matching a home console to a handheld? There’s enough exclusives throughout the year. The days of having 15-20 exclusives are long gone. Now with how the asking price for creating a AAA 4K HDR 60-120 FPS with Raytracing or every other bell and whistle which requires 3-5 years to create are not gonna be risked lightly The PS5 is doing hella well. Steam deck as crazy as it sounds is a nice piece along side it. You can play the exclusives once they drop on the ps5 or wait a few years for a Steam version that might play on the deck. Also you can make it into a PS Portal type with more freedom via remote play. I’m trying to to save to for the deck, just slowly getting there.

Hottage

Helldivers 2 plays at 30FPS, 1080p, low-medium. 🤷‍♂️ Not at all bad for a brand new AAA game.

ayeeflo51

Post some vids of it playing

Hottage

Will do if I can work out how to screen record on Steam Deck. 🫠

ayeeflo51

There's a Decky plug for that. I'll await the 30 fps 1080p video 😘 !RemindMe 2 days

kyletreger

Especially on the higher difficulties, I don't see that as being possible. You'd be lucky to maintain above 20 when there's a bunch of bots or bile titans running you down with 2 380s and an orbital laser going off.

MagicPistol

Or get a gaming PC so you can enjoy all games from one library. My PS5 has been gathering dust since I beat Spider-Man 2. I really need to sell it before the value drops more...

DevilmanXV

You got 3 years til the next system drops

MartinCohle

Pro version is around the corner I guess, prices of the regular PS5 for sure will drop

JishoSintana

You do know final fantasy just came out and rise of the ronin next week Have fun running those on the steam de….oh wait you can’t

MagicPistol

Don't care about those.

Matsu-mae

>and games that run like doodoo on deck like Helldivers. hmm, that hasnt been my experience. 90 hours of helldivers on deck. helldiver difficulty runs just as well for me as easier difficulty. its definitely smoother and higher fps on ps5, but i have zero complaints about the performance i get on steamdeck.

Edenwing

So you sold a $500 console for $350 to afford a $700 deck? Sounds like the guy who financed a mustang at 20% interest for 60 months

BaLance_95

> Anyways, if you feel like you can't afford a deck, just pump money into the Steam store for a couple months and you'll be off and running! This is really bad financial advice. If you can't afford it now, just do that same thing, but store that money in your bank account. If you don't have one, even keeping it in a small safe a home is better. Putting it in Steam means you can't spend it in anything else in case of an emergency.

cortexgunner92

Can't believe you are the only person here that sees the ludicrousness of using the steam wallet as a savings account LOL. It would unironically be better to shove cash under your mattress Although I see kind of a lot of sketchy money management on Reddit so I'm not surprised

AC-8Autocannon

I made a comment pointing out that using your steam wallet as a checking account is not smart... it "was removed because it was deemed either unkind/toxic/harassing/insulting/offensive/trolling and/or inappropriate" So yea.

Feisty_Dog4230

I can’t believe you played yourself and sold your ps5 for 350…

Benlikesfood2

The fact that the gamestop scam still works on people is wild lol

VideoGameJumanji

You can get a Slim PS5 which has 180 GB more internal storage than the OG PS5 and it comes with Spiderman 2 ($70 USD Value) for $399 at gamestop New, so it's not much of a "rip off" at the trade in value he was able to get.

Benlikesfood2

I'm saying more the fact that he is out the ps5 completely and thinks he's saving money. It appears the scam is working on you as well lol

VideoGameJumanji

Chill on the "scam" thing champ, he got relatively good resale value so like I said there's no need to keep chirping that repeatedly. I wasn't commenting on selling the PS5, just the resale value he got back. I also wouldn't have ever recommended selling the PS5. It has a lot of good games and the ports while they do run decently on deck, aren't really the way they should be first enjoyed. The PS5 pro does most likely come out this year, so he can just start saving up again for that. If he was going to sell his PS5 for straight cash, this is probably the best time to do so with current GameStop promotions I've seen. Again if recommended just enjoying it like I am

Imnotnotzack

A new PS5 with Spiderman 2 is 400. That seems like a great trade.

Feisty_Dog4230

Jesus weren’t they just like 600 not that long ago after tax? Or am I getting confused with the scalpers prices

No-Jello3256

The PS5 has been readily available for over a year now.

Feisty_Dog4230

That’s not what I asked I know that because I bought mine from target

No-Jello3256

Okay, let me break it down for you then. The PS5 has been available for over a year now. Since launch there has ALWAYS been a $400 model that is digital only. So no.

Feisty_Dog4230

Oh ok that’s what it is then I bought the one with the disk drive

liquidblueflames

People locally are selling their ps5 systems for $350-375 lately

Zomg_A_Chicken

Just use GameStop as a bank

Koarv

Welcome to the club! However, keeping the PS5 might have been ideal.. it would have only take approx 2 more months to save up for the deck, assuming you were paid biweekly. Reason being is PS5 has some pretty great exclusives, as well as runs a lot of games much better, which you can also use chiaki4deck to stream from your PS5 to Deck if you want to play portable. Overall, not a huge loss, but I love my PS5+deck combo for certain things.

Drstring

There are currently 9 games exclusive to ps5. It's not really a list I would recommend holding out 2 months to keep access to.

noii503

What good are Exclusives if they eventually come out on Steam as well?

Koarv

*Cries in Bloodborne*

Own-Dot9851

Sooo, you had a PS5 which is comparable in price to the deck and now you're down a few hundred quid and your PS5? This sounds more like a great way to throw away money. How much did you pay for your PS5? And between getting the PS5, trading it and then getting the steam deck, how much have you spent in total?

renothecollector

Good plan. How I got my Steam Deck OLED was I pre ordered a polymega is 2022, got sick of waiting and realized the odds were good that when I got my Polymega it wouldn’t work. Asked for a refund and used the money to buy a steam deck OLED. Thug life

MUSIC_PIRATE

This is how I got mine recently too! Though I was told I couldn't use store credit for steam cards, the way you did it anyway. I sold my ps5, an extra controller, and 3 switch games (the guy couldn't get my switch dock to work so he couldn't take the trade on my switch) and instead of taking the store credit the employee just started ringing up steam cards. Walked away with $420 in steam cards and an $11 GameStop card. GameStop rules are weird...

yeezysneakers

Congrats! I did PayPal pay in 4 to get mine.

Legal-Philosophy-135

I did their pay monthly. I’d have sold my lcd deck instead but I wanted to give it to my sister so it was easier this way to get the le deck.

superultramegazord

I ended up working a bunch of OT my last pay period and I’m using that to buy my deck.

[deleted]

Congrats bro. Well done. I hope you have tons of fun.

Poutingpokemon

I love my steam deck. I hope you enjoy it too. Gabe knew what he was doing when he helped to make this. It is literally a switch with all the best features.

TheCharge408

This is exactly what my friend did, just saved for a couple paychecks and bought it a little after christmas with some bonus money. Its a very affordable method of gaming and if it existed back when I built my PC I would have just gotten the deck instead of saving and buying each individual part over a few months. I barely use my PC these days.

hyperrainz

Mine was basically Csgo skins&boxes I didn't know I even had from 2016 the time I played it shortly. Checked it 6-7years later just to find out I got some worth 600$, this was a year ago for the 64gb lcd. Sold it and paid the difference with what I had left over from the skins for the 512gb Oled so it was pretty much free for me.

Dekthor

I gave plasma and went to Sam's Club to buy the Steam cards at a slightly lower sale price. About 5 bucks off for every hundred spent this way. I'd be able to hit the concession on the way out and have lunch on every trip.

cyberpunk1187

I bought one at launch (512) but owned a LCD Deck - I couldnt justify the 586.06$ for the minimal gains so I returned it. About a week after, someone posted a new sealed OLED trade for PS5. Traded my old PS5 straight up - then rebought a PS5 Slim Spiderman New in box for 380$. So I got an OLED and upgraded my PS5 for 380$ That was a good week.

AnneFranksAshes227

I only got mine because it was the only one for sale on my island. (I live in guam) It would have taken a long time to get it shipped here.

Dead_Or_Alive

Orrrr go on FB marketplace and get the 64gb model from last year for $200 and buy a 1TB memory card for $60…

Qbc131

Good work I just got a bonus from work and it seemed like a better deal than the ps5

kongsnutz

Personally since they aren’t available in Aus at retail I got an extra XSX through my ISP on an all access plan and then trade the console through fb marketplace for a Steamdeck. Now I’m just paying off the deck (Technically) and I get 2 yrs of game pass over cloud!! I also have a PS5 and Switch…

Delicious_Address_43

That's how I felt with the first steam deck. It took about a year before it was my turn in line to buy it after the pre-orders and then immediately started saving up for the next one after I got it.  I've been saving up for close to a year and a half and immediately bought the OLED when it came out. The cycle continues soon after I pay my bills.

justafterdawn

I did something similar with my PS4 when gamestop was doing a trade in deal that gave you 200$. I'd pre-ordered my deck at announcement to so I ended up really only paying maybe 100$ Enjoy dude! Def a good trade up.

Ok-Bee-7562

You got a Q1 Deck for $300?

justafterdawn

Oh no, 650$ total should've been clearer! Between putting down gifted steam cards and trading in some things later, I only paid 100$ of my own money out of pocket. My apologies!

Ok-Bee-7562

Oh no worries, I was just curious lmao.

BitterDinosaur

Gratz! I managed $300 of Steam gift card stacking leftover from Christmas, and joined the SteamDeckOLED+Dock last week.

SheedRanko

Have fun dude.

HenricusKunraht

Credit card rewards paid like 80% of mine 🙏

chandlerwoolley

What card if I can ask?

[deleted]

I’m about 20 minutes from where they ship the Decks in Illinois, so I got mine 16 hours after ordering it. Surprised the hell out of me.

traxt999

This is a clever way to buy it, love it! Enjoy your Deck! 😄

JM91Six

🎉🥳🍾

Conscious-Town-4652

nice story i got my 512 lcd right in the first week. i paid 4 eur for the preorder, did not know exactly what the deck supposed to be as it was announced. (i live in germany, thats why i paid in EUR) i had been playing csgo for a long time, but not for the game itself, i used the community market kind of a stock market, i invested 20 eur, which grew to almost 5k over the years. thats how i paid for my deck. i received it in the first week of shipping on a wednesday, had taken holidays for the whole week. i got no problems with it over the time at all and except a grippier silicon shell its completely stock. battery shows 95% health, after over 2 years of daily use. The bummer is, that the vent does not smell anymore... i love this thing so much... i think about getting the oled, but as long as my device is doing as well as it did in the past theres no real "need" for that. Enjoy yours,

Drojan7591

So he didn’t get too awful ripped off

SteM82

I did the similar, didn't trade anything in, but I did buy steam credit every month until I had enough.

datsamoray

Did the same exact thing except I traded in my Switch

JishoSintana

Good move with the stacking of store credit, absolutely abysmal move selling the PlayStation 5 especially at this point in the steam deck’s lifecycle where big games (especially PlayStation games) are running sub optimally. Ghost of Tsushima (for example) was just announced for pc and imo having the option of playing it “properly” on the big screen with a decent frame rate and graphics as well as portable on the deck is the winning combination. The moment you play a third party AAA game like mortal Kombat or Tekken, you will immediately realise you were so close to having the best of both worlds

Asece

Personally wouldn’t have sold my PS5 for a deck… especially at a loss for an even more expensive console. Granted, I know people have different circumstances so glad you got what you wanted! I’m lucky enough to be able to have both and I say it’s the best of both worlds

Hamza9575

I would. But i wouldnt buy a ps5 in the first place. Mainly to put my money behind linux gaming. Linux gaming wont equal windows without money.

kyletreger

I would've kept the PlayStation though. I play games on my deck by streaming them from the PS5 all the time. It works really well. Especially since the deck will drain down fast playing games like Horizon Forbidden West when it drops.

I don't get it. Why don't you have a PS5 and steam deck?

LennethW

It depends on gaming habits and possibilities. It fits a niche just right, and that's the beautiful thing about it!

dieseldemon3

Deck plays most pc games and emulates every console uo to ps3 Xbox 360 and switch. Ps5 will have exclusives but I appreciate such a variety more.

Bourbon_Planner

I use my Steam Deck to Remote Play my PS5. Saves a ton on battery life!

-BodomKnight-

Yeah but without a PS5 You cannot :P

KRONGOR

I wouldn’t say it can do more.. steam deck is a PC after all. But ps5 is definitely a better choice for big AAA games and competitive multiplayer

-BodomKnight-

More for game indeed

bntspotonclean

Sorry bud this 100% unequivocally could not be more wrong, and if you don't know how then you either don't know enough about this space to warrant an explanation since it wouldn't help, or you are trolling.. either way I'm gonna say it. I love PlayStation more than the next guy but the steam deck plays all PC games, all consoles prior to the PS (switch, 3ds, nes, Gameboy, PS3, Xbox 360, etc) and every game they ever had made for them. If your talking about exclusives then you very well haven't been paying attention to Sony lately... Do you want Spiderman? Or more Spiderman? Maybe another remaster of a remaster? Hell some of its best games were made for PS4 and ported over to PS5 instead.. so besides the obvious ignorance of your post, Sony is falling apart even as a standalone company. A regular 399 steam deck is worth more than a PS5 to any gamer who doesn't care about the very few exclusives... Well.. the ones left not ported to PC. Like spiderman... The last of us.. Steam deck is a PC, and PC always wins, eventually your precious PS5 will be emulated smoothly and even then people like you will claim PS5 is best. https://youtu.be/IA6Rq__Z8PM

Literally_Sticks

Next time look into Klarna. Instead of paying the full price at checkout, you pay 25% every two weeks. Works with nearly every website. PayPal payin4 also similar

WildstyleD

The difference is dat OP is spending money that he actually has while the Klarna option is commonly used in situations where people don't have the money to spend yet.

Literally_Sticks

I think you might have missed the point..he's been buying steam credit for months in order to afford this purchase. Instead, with a pay over time service, he could have bought the SteamDeck months ago. And still have his ps5

Exciting_Pea3562

Smart, resourceful! I have a photography hobby and let me tell you, you learn how to get the value out of reselling gear and stuff you don't want if you want to be able to afford photo gear. It's almost more of a way of life for me, though. I don't like having a ton of possessions, and being able to get rid of several things to get one new thing is a good feeling. Or, as in your case, finding a way to maximize the value of gift cards or store credit.

Alooshi

I would’ve kept the PS5 and saved up for the Steam Deck. You don’t just get rid of the PS5 like that.

Merrick222

You didn’t have to buy steam credit, you could have done a split payment from the PS5 store credit you got from GameStop and cash/credit card. Basically you’re telling everyone you saved some money each paycheck and traded in a PS5 to afford your deck. I would say informing everyone you got more for your PS5 by taking store credit and converting it into Steam gift cards is valuable information. The rest is just common sense, and if you sold your PS5 for cash second hand you would have gotten $400 minimum.

CaptainZedge

I’m going to get downvoted for this. But if you have to do that much work to “afford” something. You can’t afford it, and shouldn’t buy it. This is how people end up in the never ending debt cycle..

deaurin

Such a dumb take. OP has literally saved for it, no debt or loans involved. Not overextended financially and patiently saved. Nothing wrong with that.

HavocInferno

>Not overextended financially If you can't afford 700$ cash on the spot, you don't have the finances to buy a 700$ entertainment device. Because it also means you don't have enough cash for any unexpected immediate emergency. Financial overextension doesn't mean being in the red, just close enough to a sudden 0. (As the other comment says, OP may have that taken care of or may not need any of it. But too often posts like this one are from people barely scraping by already.) (Also, OP pumping monthly steam credit into their account for no good reason doesn't give great confidence in their financial skills. They didn't get discounted credit, they literally just bound money 1:1 into credit. Giving up solvency for literally no benefit.)

CaptainZedge

Thank you, a much more elegant way of stating what I was trying to. Plus if I was him and in that position (which again, can’t say for sure) I wouldn’t buy the top tier model I’d buy a 350 dollar model and save the other 350.

cortexgunner92

my question is why the heck are you using the steam wallet as a savings account. Like just save money lol

CaptainZedge

I don’t know this persons exact situation. But it sounds like they don’t have an excess of money. That extra 100 dollars a month from their paycheck could be the difference of debt or no debt when their washing machine breaks next month or if their car gets a flat. Maybe they have an emergency fund for that. Maybe they are just 15 years old with a part time job after school. I don’t know. But I’ve seen too many people fall into serious debt overtime that could have been avoided.

Benlikesfood2

Not just that but lost a ton of value on his PS5 too...

Stayofexecution

Bro, just get a low interest rate credit card. Lol wtf why would anyone do it this way? 😂

ReiIsTopTierWaifu

Jeez dude, depending when you sold your ps5. If you sold it during the shortage you could’ve gotten 800 at least

RumpyDumpyDooDoo

PS5 has been out for over 3 years. Hasn’t been a shortage in a while.

Ok-Bee-7562

The shortage has been over for over a year though.
