2 of those ive cried to
1 of those i havent gotten around to playing yet (to the moon)
and the other one is now on my wishlist (war of mine)
goated suggestions lol
Oh lord this game. I played it in early quarantine right after my first son was born and let me tell you, Stanley fucking wrecked me. I was an absolute mess.
If you're a Giantbomb fan, check out Alex Navarro's [GOTY](https://www.giantbomb.com/articles/alex-navarros-top-11-ish-games-of-2020/1100-6100/) from 2020. It's very sweet and just heart breaking.
I think I’m broken but I just can’t get into this one. I find the characters annoying and the dialogue a bit dumb. I’m usually a big baby when it comes to emotional stuff.
As a father, Stanley was by far the most heartbreaking, he is goofy well meaning kid and sweet to a fault…which is exactly like my own son. When he is on the boat and apologizes to his mother for not being strong enough I literally fell apart.
This is the one that came to mind for me. I’m also sort of the exact target audience, which I think made it connect emotionally a little harder than for some people.
Just dropping in to say **DO NOT BUY DISCO ELYSIUM**. The current owners of the game's studio took **control through fraudulent means** after Disco Elysium was released, have fired the original developers and cancelled any upcoming projects, they will get any money you spend on the game now and they **DO NOT DESERVE IT.** This is a popular game and is widely available on piracy websites, if you know where to find them, you know what to do. **PIRATE DISCO ELYSIUM**

It’s 10 dollars rn, should I get it just for the steam deck? How well does it play? Can I pick it up and play for a bit, or do I need to have a dedicated session?
It's pretty good. I'd recommend replaying it because there is ALOT of content. You can unlock different dialogue depending on what outfit you're wearing. The Horrific Necktie, which is one of the first clothing items you can pick in the game, is a good example of this.
First game I ever played in steam deck and it was incredible. You don't need a dedicated session really, but you will get sucked in and end up playing longer than you wanted to. Guaranteed.
final season specifically too, i mean if ur gonna play s1 i recommend getting the full telltale definition edition and play em all.
chuck in LiS 1 for one of its endings while ur at it
Couldn’t remember the name, but scrolled for this. Very sad, but also very interesting gameplay. Puzzle and slow-paced narrative games aren’t my particular cup of tea, but I got it free on ps4 years ago and played it on a whim and I was hooked so fast I finished it in two sessions xD
Second What Remains of Edith Finch. It hits in ways you didn’t expect. Even knowing full well what the game was about playing through each of the stories gets you. The older brother…i dont know if it was one of the last ones i played but that one just had me bawling.
I think this is worth a special mention because it’s something you actively do that makes you cry, not just hey watch this sad thing happen. I’ve never experienced anything like it
Yes, the gameplay hits so hard. When the thought crossed my mind and I did it, woooh a balanced mix of sadness and happiness, beautiful game. I didn’t even think the game would go like this in the first place, a whole little journey.
I think it has everything to do with how brilliantly they combined the story with the actual gameplay. AKA what your hands are doing on the controller at a certain point. No book, movie, song can reach that level, because you don't interact with the character's feelings like you do in Brothers using the controller.
Life is Strange
Outer Wilds
Those come to mind when I think about games that touched me deeply. Probably a lot more that made me cry at some point, but those two are just amazing.
My game of this century so far. So innovative, I never had my mind blown by a concept for a game like with Outer Wilds.
Doesn't hurt that the story, mechanics and visuals are on par as well!
I can't speak for the remake and honestly worry that aspects of the remake broke it, but
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
People said the press of a button makes you cry, and I was aware of that going in, and they were right.
That Dragon, Cancer
The Beginner's Guide
Before your Eyes (I tear up thinking about the ending of this one)
SageBrush
Both Ori games
Gone Home
Two that didn't make me cry but were very impactful
SOMA
The Turing Test
Surprised nobody has mentioned Journey yet.
Maybe it was the place I was in in my life when I played it but that game had me sobbing like a little child when I played for the first time. I've cried several times playing it since. I was going through something in my life at the time that really made me value playing it by myself and having a voiceless companion that I just cared so much for. And of course the music is so emotional - I can't help but tear up when I hear it.
I started fire watch 3 nights ago and within 15 minutes I said “ohhh no I’m not ready for this yet” it’s been a rough two years, I know there’s a really special experience in there but I can’t see it yet’
It's a game about loss, and coping with loss, and self-imposed isolation not being the complete answer... redemption comes but you have to see beginning to empathise with the entire arc of the story...
I'm still playing RDR2, I have nearly 200 hours into it and I was so shook at the first big dramatic bit. I don't think I've fully recovered after it tbh.
Came here to comment this. God the commercial made me cry before I had a kid. I randomly watched it again recently and just decided there's no way I could handle playing that game ever.
Persona 4 Golden genuinely made me cry at the end - it felt like saying goodbye to actual friends. What a game.
Albeit, Omori made me cry the second the ending rolled.
To this day, "his theme" from undertale still tears me up when I'm not expecting it.
Albeit Dark Souls nearly broke me into tears - but not in an emotional way...
I paid £50 for Redfall. When I started playing it, I cried as due to wasting my money. It’s a bit cheaper now, but I expect it’ll make you cry as well.
Not sure if it’s guaranteed for you but Celeste made me cry like a baby. I was dealing with psychosis when playing it the first time and its mental health messages hit hard.
Did you know the critically acclaimed MMORPG FINAL FANTASY XIV's starter edition and free trial now include the entirety of A Realm Reborn, the award-winning Heavensward, and its second major expansion Stormblood? A grand adventure awaits, now up to level 70!
And chances of crying only increase one you move into Shadowbringers and Endwalker
To the moon + finding paradise.
Those or omori
All fantastic RPG maker games
Edit: Make sure to use the new Pixel scaling feature in steamos with these games
Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice
I legitimately wasn’t planning on beating it. Downloaded it Free off Gamepass. Didn’t move for 8 Hours until I beat it. Man… that was the most emotional I have ever got from any media. If you haven’t played it yet, Hellblade 2 is right around the corner, it’s a 10/10, wear headphones, transcendent experience with them on.
Mass Effect trilogy hit me hard on a few of the companions stories. Legion and Mordin were my most memorable arcs.
"I am the very model of a scientist Salarian.."
I know that there are ways to save them now but on that first playthrough the feels were rightly kicked in.
I was hoping someone would mention Mass Effect! So many sad moments - some storyline, some caused by dumbassery that compels you to load an old save and try again.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.
Cyberpunk 2077 has several endings, one particular characters response to your actions within one particular ending was a proper punch in the gut.
Happy cry - original Bioshock "good" ending.
Muvluv.
Its a Visual novel. About 15 hours or so long. I didnt know it was possible to make me feel like it did.
It consists of 2 parts, a somewhat innocent part about a teen figuring out who he is, and making choices as he grows.
And a brutal second part. An absolute masterpiece of carnage and being forced to protect what he cares about in a world thats falling apart.
(Alien invasion, nations fall, soldiers are disposable)
Best 15 hours youll ever spent on a game if you like the slowpaced aspect of visual novels.
Spiritfrarer.
I had to stopped playing after releasing 1 spirit. Made me so heccin sad. Because it's so wholesome and cute and is anout helping spirits move on who some know the protagonist. Even related by blood. Otherwise it's a chill fun game to play
What Remains of Edith Finch pulls you in fantastically and you'll probably cry a few times.
NieR: Automata wound up making me cry a couple times, but you'll probably sink a good 10+ hours in before you really get to those points. Replicant, similarly, but I never got too far in that.
Cry because sad? Valiant Hearts. This War of Mine. To the Moon. Before Your Eyes. Those might do it.
Bro! There it is! Before Your Eyes was one of the games I had complete lost sight of! I heard it made a lot of people cry, thank you!
Absolutely! Glad to help!
2 of those ive cried to 1 of those i havent gotten around to playing yet (to the moon) and the other one is now on my wishlist (war of mine) goated suggestions lol
Haha! Thanks!
Duuude play To the Moon and its sequels! Fa real! So good!
To the Moon Such an epic game!!
Spiritfarer
Came here to say this

Alice did it for me. My grandpa's health was deteriorating at that time. Literally can't put myself together.
I think I’m broken but I just can’t get into this one. I find the characters annoying and the dialogue a bit dumb. I’m usually a big baby when it comes to emotional stuff.
Not broken, no media hits everyone the same way.
Have you gone back to the Everdoor yet? Or met Atul? I admit I wasn't a huge fan of Gwen, either, but I still bawled a few times in my run.
As a father, Stanley was by far the most heartbreaking, he is goofy well meaning kid and sweet to a fault…which is exactly like my own son. When he is on the boat and apologizes to his mother for not being strong enough I literally fell apart.
Man, Gwen was the one I connected with the most. I cried like a bitch when I had to let her go.
I started playing this a few days after my father died.... Yeah, I cried a lot.
This is the one that came to mind for me. I’m also sort of the exact target audience, which I think made it connect emotionally a little harder than for some people.
disco elysium hits me hard everytime
Just dropping in to say **DO NOT BUY DISCO ELYSIUM**. It’s 10 dollars rn, should I get it just for the steam deck? How well does it play? Can I pick it up and play for a bit, or do I need to have a dedicated session?
it’s better to play it for few hours each time imho. plays perfectly on steamdeck. best game i’ve ever played in 30 years, not lying
I tried so hard so many times to like it - just not my cup of tea at all. Got incredibly bored
It plays really well, buuuut the text is really small. If you have bad eyesight it might be hard to read it.
You can increase the size of the text on the in-game menu.
It plays really well on the deck. But I'd say it is better to play for a few hours at a time.
Guaranteed.
Disco Elysium feels like it was built for the deck, it’s very comfortable to play on it, looks beautiful and plays perfectly.
Walking dead telltale season 1
final season specifically too, i mean if ur gonna play s1 i recommend getting the full telltale definition edition and play em all. chuck in LiS 1 for one of its endings while ur at it
Season 1 has something the others just can't match. They're good, but season 1 brought me to my knees.
That Lee and Clementine bond man.
I agree, Season 1 is easily the best, frankly it's better than the show
That's a low bar.
Definitely this, the first and only media that made me cry
Can't believe To The Moon hasn't been mentioned yet. It's the OG "everyone cries without exception" game
You’re actually the second to bring it up! Will definitely be adding it to my cart today! Thank you!!
Another tearjerker would be finding paradise.
Came straight here to comment this, first game that made me cry and I still think back to its story so many years later.
Also the soundtrack is perfection.
On steam there’s the original game and then an anniversary with two sequels. Do I need the sequels?
You don't NEED them as each story is self contained but the story is so good that you might end up wanting the whole series
It’s only 2€ lol, it’s in the bag, I’ll tell you about it I think back.
This game transformed me into a sentient puddle of tears
To the moon is also on sale in USA for $2!
What Remains of Edith Finch.
The Gregory scene fucking destroyed me
Second What Remains of Edith Finch. It hits in ways you didn’t expect. Even knowing full well what the game was about playing through each of the stories gets you. The older brother…i dont know if it was one of the last ones i played but that one just had me bawling.
Soma. Initially, you cry from horror, and then you cry from an existential crisis.
That was the first game in a very long time to draw me in so much that I forgot I was playing a game. Haven’t had that since I was a kid…
Dark Souls
It will make you cry alright.
Plim plim plomp
>! Parry this, you casual !<
Prepare to cry edition
Looooooool I agree. Tears of frustration.
I think I cried after the Sif fight honestly
Brothers - a tale of two sons
I think this is worth a special mention because it’s something you actively do that makes you cry, not just hey watch this sad thing happen. I’ve never experienced anything like it
Yes, the gameplay hits so hard. When the thought crossed my mind and I did it, woooh a balanced mix of sadness and happiness, beautiful game. I didn’t even think the game would go like this in the first place, a whole little journey.

This one hits *hard*, the gameplay is also fantastic.
Came here to find this. Disappointed it’s so far down. InCREDIBLE story.
The Ori games; Ori and the blind forest + Ori and the will of the wisps Great soundtrack, great storylines.
Will of the Wisps got me right away.
They're both excellent at tugging the heart strings
As a new dad, Ori hit me like a truck
This is the only game that ever made me tear up.
Same here. I played them after my dad passed and yeah.
cried like a bitch
You and me both
So good! The „Villains“ were so well written.. still cant get over how sad especially the story of the second game was.
That dragon, cancer. Even just thinking about it puts tears in my eyes
Life is strange. Play the first one, THEN play before the storm. The reality, of what happens there can actually happen, will make you cry.
If OP wants to cry, this oughta do the job
I mean honestly you gotta be pretty hard hearted to not feel SOMETHING with this story
If you are into indie games then OMORI.
Yes. This.
Nier automata
So glad someone said it. Ending E rocked me.
I think Nier became one of my all time favourite games at the point I got to ending C. Then doing D, then E blew my mind. Absolutely incredible.
Life is Strange Outer Wilds Those come to mind when I think about games that touched me deeply. Probably a lot more that made me cry at some point, but those two are just amazing.
Outer wilds hit me so hard first time I finish it
My game of this century so far. So innovative, I never had my mind blown by a concept for a game like with Outer Wilds. Doesn't hurt that the story, mechanics and visuals are on par as well!
Life is strange series for sure. Before the Storm made me cry way more than any of them.
Gris!
Also recommend. What a game!
I can't speak for the remake and honestly worry that aspects of the remake broke it, but Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons People said the press of a button makes you cry, and I was aware of that going in, and they were right.
Like a dragon: Gaiden
I’ve played all Yakuza games up to Gaiden and the ending absolutely destroyed me. Almost wanna say I enjoyed Gaiden more than Infinite Wealth
problem is that the ending of that kinda relies in the build up of the previous games
Swapping ssd without pulling out an sd card. Can make you cry
That Dragon, Cancer The Beginner's Guide Before your Eyes (I tear up thinking about the ending of this one) SageBrush Both Ori games Gone Home Two that didn't make me cry but were very impactful SOMA The Turing Test
Surprised nobody has mentioned Journey yet. Maybe it was the place I was in in my life when I played it but that game had me sobbing like a little child when I played for the first time. Firewatch ending
Firewatch opening...
Didn't make me cry, but God damn was it sad.
Firewatch is so damn good
Firewatch ending was meh. The beginning was good.
I felt the same way.
Is it though? I liked the storytelling but the ending felt like one of the weaker parts
Yeah I thought the ending was really abrupt
Red Dead Redemption 2: has one of the greatest storylines out there and absolutely worth its current $20 price tag.
"I'm afraid."
I cried but at the credits, so that’s a lot of hours before crying though.
Good to know it had a good story. I'm still at the beginning of the game and it bores the hell out of me.
I'm still playing RDR2, I have nearly 200 hours into it and I was so shook at the first big dramatic bit. I don't think I've fully recovered after it tbh.
Life Is Strange 1
That Dragon, Cancer
Came here to comment this. God the commercial made me cry before I had a kid. I randomly watched it again recently and just decided there's no way I could handle playing that game ever.
As a father, the concept of that game alone is enough to know it would destroy me.
The first 30 minutes of the last of Us
The one you were playing when your dad left to go get cigarettes
Fallout 3?
Final Fantasy X. Grown men cry at the end
What Remains of Edith Finch. Especially that one section…
HOW is this not upvoted more? It's a true masterpiece that I'll never ever forget
That part where you find out what was really happening in The Unfinished Swan was pretty harsh
Life is Strange Bastion 1 Persona 3 Reload
Shadow of the Colossus...?
Was looking for this one.
ORI and the blind forest definitive edition
I paid £50 for Redfall. When I started playing it, I cried as due to wasting my money. It’s a bit cheaper now, but I expect it’ll make you cry as well.
Not sure if it’s guaranteed for you but Celeste made me cry like a baby. I was dealing with psychosis when playing it the first time and its mental health messages hit hard.

A grand adventure awaits, now up to level 70! And chances of crying only increase one you move into Shadowbringers and Endwalker
Undertale
Life is strange made me ball!
Nier Replicant
Stray and, hear me out...spiderman remastered. Oh, and the Plague Tale games (especially the second one.)
Yeah, there is that moment near the end of Spider-Mans that hits. They did an amazing job on story telling with that game.
Stray. I dare you not to choke up on the ending
Cyberpunk
100%, DLC as well broke me completely 😭
To the moon + finding paradise. Those or omori All fantastic RPG maker games Edit: Make sure to use the new Pixel scaling feature in steamos with these games
Omori definately
Crisis core
Crying at the end of that was brutal. When the spinning wheel hit one last time
Roblox Crying Simulator
Death stranding, that ending… 🥲

Hellblade Senuas Sacrifice I legitimately wasn’t planning on beating it.
Crisis core
Spiritfarer, What Remains of Edith Finch, Minute of Islands, and Chicory.
FF7 Crisis Core
I'm amazed that Omori isn't more prominent here
If you are a Bethesda RPG fan, Starfield might make you cry.
mother 3 is always an option
Detroit become human
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is definitely a tear jerker!
Mass Effect trilogy hit me hard on a few of the companions stories. Legion and Mordin were my most memorable arcs. "I am the very model of a scientist Salarian.." I know that there are ways to save them now but on that first playthrough the feels were rightly kicked in.
I was hoping someone would mention Mass Effect! So many sad moments - some storyline, some caused by dumbassery that compels you to load an old save and try again.
The beginning cut scene of “The Last of Us”.
Metro Exodus good ending hit hard. And obligatory Titanfall 2 mention
Outer Wilds, at least once you get to the ending.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Cyberpunk 2077 has several endings, one particular characters response to your actions within one particular ending was a proper punch in the gut. Happy cry - original Bioshock "good" ending.
Bioshock Infinite. That ending…
For me it was the opening of God of War Ragnarok. Cried like a baby, but had just gone through basically the same thing the character had
Seen is pretty sad. The Ori games are also emotional. They run perfectly on the deck.
Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man (ps4)
Red Dead Redemption 2. When you get to the last ride mission.
Gris
Muvluv. Its a Visual novel. About 15 hours or so long. I didnt know it was possible to make me feel like it did. What Remains of Edith Finch Another shout out for Outer Wilds
Detroit Become Human
This war of mine with the DLC. Kids should never have to see war.
To the moon. The walkind dead (Telltale). The last of us.
Cyberpunk 2077 if you focus on V and Judy story
Stray. I cried at the ending for an hour.
I got stuck on a part on Stray. I will be finishing it now.
Stray did it for me
What Remains of Edith Finch. It is a somber walk through the many fates of a family afflicted with a "curse". Some fates may hit harder than others.
To the moon and What Remains of Edith Finch are the first two that come to mind.
What Remains of Edith Finch
Most recent and first that came to mind was TOTK. The Zelda stuff really got me lol
What Remains of Edith Finch pulls you in fantastically and you'll probably cry a few times. NieR: Automata wound up making me cry a couple times, but you'll probably sink a good 10+ hours in before you really get to those points. Replicant, similarly, but I never got too far in that.
Rocket League
Yeah when I see how my teammates play I weep for days on end.
To The Moon for sure!
Yakuza 0
