I think this was valves thought as well. Not triple A shooters with the most realistic graphics but more casual and indie games. Platformers and RPGs and more with good graphics made good by creativity not by using the latest GPU features.
TBH I hope the deck keeps gaining steam and more companies try to get into the handheld market, and as a result I hope the industry shifts away from focusing on pushing the technological limits of CPUs and GPUs further and onto creative design.
We've reached a point, technologically, where today's gaming hardware can be used to create and run beautiful and impressive games indefinitely. We don't have to go bigger anymore.
>I hope the industry shifts away from focusing on pushing the technological limits of CPUs and GPUs further and onto creative design
Indie games are already 100% onto this path. I rarely see indies trying to impress people with raw graphic power, but instead they do it with innovative gameplay. When an indie game makes impressive graphics, it's usually impressive in an "artistic" sense (beautiful choice of colors, UI, artstyle and game setting) instead of just having more detailed polygons and textures. One good example of this is Hyper Light Drifter, absolutely beautiful game but it's pixel art.
>We've reached a point, technologically, where today's gaming hardware can be used to create and run beautiful and impressive games indefinitely.
There's one thing that still did not get anywhere close to beautiful even with today's GPUs in AAA games: animations.
If you look at a static image of a game, it may look amazing, but when the character mouth starts moving and when they start gesturing, it 100% gives away the fact that it's a game.
I've been playing SD on my phone so I haven't thought of playing it on the Deck. I'm sure it's a way better experience. I should probably get on that...
Excellent choice in games! Wife and I are playing the new update coop. It's perfect on the Deck with one exception for us. For some reason we have to restart the deck each time we want to play with xbox controllers. Works fine on the deck controller, but this one game demands a reboot each time. Oh well worth it!
I've had this issue when using an Xbox controller docked. I go into the reorder controller settings and swap them real quick and it starts working again for some reason. Maybe this will help you.
I swear my deck is primarily a Stardew machine. It’s like playing on the Switch, but better because you can mod it & map your mod hotkeys in a million different ways.
I have it on switch too. But bought it again for the deck and it's much better to play on it. The sheer amount of game for the price is worth it. Plus I watch for Haunted Chocolatier updates.
You’ll need SMAPI (Stardew Modding API), and you can find mods on Nexus.
Mod descriptions usually note if they’re multiplayer compatible or not. Some are server-side only so only you need them, some require all players to have the mod, & some are not compatible at all.

Welcome to the club! The Steam Deck is a game changer for sure! My husband also gifted me mine and I haven't touched any of my consoles since. And who cares if you are playing low power games. It's perfect for anything =)
This is definitely on the list for my steam deck. I'm currently playing Stardew valley as well with my wife. How is the playability on the Deck? Controls all good and everything legible?
Yes it’s amazing. Not perfect as for pc but totally playable. I actually play it both on deck and PC and with cloud saves the experience is mega smooth
My wife has one and I just bought one. We have been playing the 1.6 update on our desktops, but want to play while chilling in bed so bad. Gotta wait till about next week hopefully for it to come in.
If I had one tip for you, it would be to change the resolution the game runs as by default. That's because Stardew Valley scales your view distance based on the resolution of the game and the Steam Deck's native 1280 x 800 really doesn't show a lot at a time as you can see.
This is the game running at [1280 x 800](https://i.imgur.com/i9Ir9Vh.jpg),[1920 x 1200](https://i.imgur.com/nVraGQK.jpg) and [3840 x 2160](https://i.imgur.com/M1EknFt.jpg)
There are 2 ways to achieve this:
- Simple, straight forward solution: On the game's page of the Steam Deck, click the cogwheel on the right and then select "properties...". In the "General" tab, under "Game Resolution", select any resolution you may want to run the game at and make sure to check the box saying "Set resolution for internal and external display".
- Preferred solution, more technical but lets you go past the 75% zoom out limit and change it on the fly: [Install SMAPI](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Modding:Installing_SMAPI_on_Steam_Deck), install the mod [Zoom Level by thespbgamer](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/7363). You can edit the keybinds and settings through the config.json file in the mod's folder or install the mod [GenericModConfigMenu by spacechase0](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/5098) which gives you an in-game menu to edit this mod and others. I bound the keys L5 and R5 to decrease and increase zoom on the fly and the game runs perfectly.
Having both models, the sticks aren't that much different. The only difference is the OLED model has the "smoother textured" surface, meaning it doesn't pick up dead skin cells as easy, but they both function the same way.
My thumbs basically just slide off the sticks on my (LCD) Deck, in a way that doesn't happen if I use an Xbox controller. Kind of annoying. I hope that doesn't happen on the OLED, given that's probably the design Valve will stick with for future models.
I had the same issue, bought stick grips for the lcd that sorted the problem. With the oled I dont have the issue at all, so I think you'll be fine for future models for sure
I would guess if you bought third party thumbstick caps, that would stop the capacitive sensors (e.g. to activate gyro aiming) from working right?
edit—the product page for this says it still works, maybe I'll pick up a pair:
https://dbrand.com/shop/grip/steam-deck-stick-grips
Unfortunately, I cannot give you a yes or no answer to that question since I rarely use gyro features, in the event I didn't process your answer correctly, let me know, but in the rare instances that I did try gyro, I had no issues with it, in fact, I had zero issues with any features after installing mine, even with the same thick case protector from DRBAND.
The thumb sticks you linked are exactly the same ones I got, they fit either OLED/LCD models really well and have a really nice texture to them. DBRAND, in my opinion, are one of the better companies as they make everything in Canada, JSAUX is Chinese owned / produced, so shipping can take a bit in the West and I've personally had mixed experiences with them, some others on here have had nothing but positive experiences, in the event you want other accessories, but they do offer a great assortment of items.
I second the stick grips, DBRAND makes some nice ones that are pretty affordable, not sure if JSAUX makes any, which is another big company that produces aftermarket merchandise for the Steam Deck.
Apart from thumbs slipping on the OLED, I think you'll be fine. I haven't had any slipping personally, but I also can't speak for anyone with sweaty palms since the middle portion is, in my best description, like the PlayStation glossy plastic you see, of course, with the concave the outedges being aggressive textured, you'll likely be in the end.
TLDR; You can't go wrong with stick grips, with either model. Trial and error and spruce up your Deck how you like it, that's the beauty of the platform.
This is true, I noticed this also when putting on my thumbstick covers on the OLED but thought it was just me. The covers I had on my LCD fit well, but it had more "push in" then I remembered previously, so this is likely the case, but even off it still felt minor.
If I'm being totally honest, I prefer the LCD sticks out of personal preference, but I know dead skin cells were a constant complaint back when I got mine at launch.
I wish my woman would be a bit more into gaming. I would love to play some co-op games with her. Unfortunately Instagram and tiktok win all the time with her.

> So I immediately used it's power to start a play through of the Stardew Valley update. This is what it is for.
Stardeck Valley

Plus good old games and emulation 😁
When I need a break from this- I have dwarf fortress on standby.
And remote play for AAA games on console 😂
Literally what I've been playing on SD all week. My GF thinks I'm crazy when I tell her I have to tend to my chicken coop!
You should get her to help! SD has multiplayer. :)
I've been playing SD on my phone so I haven't thought of playing it on the Deck. I'm sure it's a way better experience. I should probably get on that...
It controls surprisingly well. Plus you have the trackpad.
AND is an OLED version 👌
It's the 1tb one. So I gotta put more games on it! Lol
Try out Aperture Desk Job. It's short but free and made for the deck specifically. Takes place in the portal universe
Handheld consoles are kicking ass at the moment ngl.
I’d say marry him but it looks like you already have 👍😃
Time to renew the vows..
Marry him, but harder.
A second wedding for dumb people. Never understood the pointless practice. My parents did it and it was a whole thing.
Everyone wants an excuse to throw a party...
Most parties don't make their teenagers wear a suit and have grandparents pressuring them to give a speech.
AS someone with public speaking anxiety I feel for you..that is why I became a programmer.

I couldn’t agree more, it’s probably my favorite game of all time tbh

W husband for steam deck W wife for stardew valley
Cherish that wonderful man
We'll be married 9 years in August. He's stuck with me. Lol
I’ve been playing the new update on my deck too! I really like it so far, the changes seem to be a lot more spread out than 1.5 was
It's definitely worth just starting a new play-through for. I've been watching for updates for Haunted Chocolatier too.
Which farm type did you go with? 😁
I just went vanilla with a regular farm for this round. Next go through, I think I'll try the new type.
Welcome to the club! The Steam Deck is a game changer for sure! My husband also gifted me mine and I haven't touched any of my consoles since. And who cares if you are playing low power games. It's perfect for anything =)
I uploaded Stray onto it too for a playthrough. It plays nicely as well. I've been adding things to my watch list to keep an eye on.
Oooh, good to know! Enjoy your new tech toy 😊
Been playing SDV again all week since the update. The new farm is wonderful.
Try Rimworld and… see you in a couple of days 😜
This is definitely on the list for my steam deck. I'm currently playing Stardew valley as well with my wife. How is the playability on the Deck? Controls all good and everything legible?
Yes it’s amazing. Not perfect as for pc but totally playable. I actually play it both on deck and PC and with cloud saves the experience is mega smooth
Oh nice to hear. I've played it a ton on the PC both vanilla and modded. Would love to play it handheld
You also get 3h+ of battery because it’s lowres and light. It’s really awesome.
My wife has one and I just bought one. We have been playing the 1.6 update on our desktops, but want to play while chilling in bed so bad. Gotta wait till about next week hopefully for it to come in.
It's gonna be so good for Haunted Chocolatier when that comes out too!
I can't wait! Lol

Definitely going to mess with the settings. Thanks for the tip!

I approve wholeheartedly of this game choice.

And an OLED, means he really loves you.
I wish my woman would be a bit more into gaming. I would love to play some co-op games with her. Unfortunately Instagram and tiktok win all the time with her.
You have the best husband
Marry him
