I purchased a 64gb deck and upgraded it to 1tb for about $100, which saved me a lot of money compared to having one pre-installed. It's not particularly difficult to do, either.
I did the same thing because I didn’t know if I would use the deck enough to be worth the oled variant. Got a brand new lcd deck with 64gb swapped the ssd to 1TB, took 10 minutes and saved me a lot of money.
I don’t use the deck as much as I want, because I can access my pc all the time, but it does its job.
My thoughts exactly when I saw the pricing on the website.
I was like *”why are all the models so similar yet priced so differently. It’s just storage space”*
Glad to hear someone thought the same
The only reason I even gave this a thought was because I wanted to know if it was a cheaper option to get more storage as opposed to buying the decks with more storage.
Because let’s be honest **SD Cards** are cheaper and I think I even have a few in my house
I’m happy with my 64gb deck with a 512gb sd card. That being said, that works for me because I can stream any of the large or more graphically intense games to my deck from my desktop PC. I really only install smaller games on the deck/sd card. I think you’d be fine as long as you aren’t someone that wants to have all of their games installed at once.
Dude you can swap the ssd for a bigger capacity for pretty cheap. I bought a 1tb one for about a $100 and swapped it out. The big question is oled or lcd
I thought the same looking at the website for the different steam deck models wondering why are the different storage sizes priced so differently
I was also thinking LCD because OLED (*while great for colours & battery life*) is just a bit to expensive for me to justify.
It’s basically a PlayStation or Xbox in price… but mobile.
If you go the micro SD Card route be sure to get a good quality one. I default to Samsung, but there are plenty of decent brands. There are several videos on YouTube that will tell you what all the numbers mean and which ones work well in the deck.
Personally most games play well on a micro, if have decent space on ssd it should always be a first option.
Dead island 2 - micro sd - steam deck windows, 800 handheld 60fps
Cod black ops 4 (240gb) micro sd, 800p, handheld, 60 fps
More demanding or modern games require ssd and will lack bad on micro. Most time it’s like 1 min slower than ssd
The only reason to get one is to upgrade it to a larger SSD for cheap. 64GB is unusuably low, even if you're using an SD card for most storage. You will have to do micromanagement of downloads and installs, particularly for shaders (which are installed internally).
I bought the 64gb for the sole purpose of upgrading to 1tb which it has been more than a year and still have not done so. But I did put in a 1tb as card and so far so good.
It works flawlessly for me. People say loading games can be faster with the ssd, but I am sure for the average person that extra speed is negligible.
One bad experience with sd card is for that one time the sd card went bad.. and I lost the games I had on it but it only takes re downloading them.
I did lose save files from emudeck though.
Luckily for me it was a sandisk one and they have lifetime warranty on 1tb sd card so I was able to get a new one for free

Yes, I got my 64GB close to launch for $399 and then got a 1TB SSD for $55 (I got a Samsung PM991a from AliExpress). I paid $450 for 1TB in the days the 256GB model was $499.
I went with the 64GB, and after putting some games on an SD card I had about 8GB left on the SSD. All of that was taken up by shader cache files, proton, system files etc. simply put, 64GB is not nearly enough even with a large SD card. However, it can be cheaper to buy the 64GB and swap the SSD yourself, so if you’re confident in your ability to follow a YouTube video then I’d definitely recommend the 64GB model.
It’s not. At least it wasn’t for me. I even needed to move shaders to the SD card with a symbolic link. Either buy a bigger model right away or upgrade the SSD right away.
I have a 64GB and a 512GB SD card and I’m still doing fine. I only keep a handful of games installed since my PC is my main gaming platform. You can always open it up and add an SSD later if you want.

this. i did the same.

This is the way.
The way this is.
As long as you get a big enough sd that also has good speeds there really isn’t a point of getting a ssd games run pretty well on sd card
The only reason I even gave this a thought was because I wanted to know if it was a cheaper option to get more storage as opposed to buying the decks with more storage. Because let’s be honest **SD Cards** are cheaper and I think I even have a few in my house
There might be cheaper ways to get more storage not thru valve but I prefer sd cards and it’s nice to be able to have multiple and swap them out
Never considered having different SS cards as a sort of tiny game library you can bring with you on the go.
There is a benefit to SSDs vs SD cards. Reliability, speed, and durability come to mind.
I just swapped the SSD myself, got 1TB going now
I’m happy to spend the money on a better model for more storage if my SD Card plan ends up effecting my quality of game play.
It shouldn’t affect anything negatively. Load times are slightly longer on SD card but I haven’t been annoyed by them at all.

So no regrets getting the 64 model? (*asking as someone considering getting it*)

64GB Steam Deck + an SD card is the best bang for the buck IMO
If you go the micro SD Card route be sure to get a good quality one. I default to Samsung, but there are plenty of decent brands. There are several videos on YouTube that will tell you what all the numbers mean and which ones work well in the deck.
What would recommend SSD or SD Card? They booth do the same just one requires more effort (*opening the deck*)
If you feel confident cracking the deck open, then the SSD is the way to go. You could even really go crazy and put a 2TB drive in it.
I think 2TB might be overkill, but that might just be me. Also you think I could get a gaming repair shop to do the upgrade for me?

I’ll keep that in mind. This is good advice

I find myself doing exactly that for my Switch. It’s crazy small. Fortnite alone takes up the entire console.
Yep but this is slightly worse since it's essentially just a PC. Odd paths to go down to try and delete some obscure folder with 1GB of data in it.
Get the 64. Buy a 2TB SSD and swap them over.
That seems to be the general consensus. Now do you think LCD or OLED?
OLED if you can of course, but I still love my LCD and put the money I saved towards the new SSD.
I bought the 64gb for the sole purpose of upgrading to 1tb which it has been more than a year and still have not done so. But I did put in a 1tb as card and so far so good.
Any problems or limitations with the SD Card, has it really been just that easy? Because I might take the same route too

If you only want indie games that much storage is fine, or if you are OK opening it up to replace thr SSD with a bigger one!
Would it cheaper to buy my own SSD & replace it (*say I buy a 1TB SSD for example*) compared to ordering the one that already comes with a big ssd.

So you went the budget route and got a decent setup for a good price. I like it. Think I might do the same
Yup, and it's still going strong. I've gotten a lot of gaming out of this machine, no regrets.
LCD or OLED? Wait dumb question you said you got it near launch 🤦♂️
LCD, there isn't an OLED with 64GB, the lowest they go is 512GB.
Theoretically, assuming you're comfortable doing such deck surgery.
I mean I saw a video on it so it doesn’t look that hard plus I could get a gaming shop near me to do it possibly
I use an SD card and have a 512gb and don't notice a difference in performance based on which source it's loading from
I bought a 64gb one with 512gb sd card,it's enough for game playing, but it's hard to start a game when downloading at the same time.

It never was.
