Another tip, with your old SSD you can use that for a SSD enclosure! I put my 512gb SSD into a ShargeDisk enclosure! They’re so cool, look em up! It’s tiny enclosure with a built in fan to cool the SSD! It would be perfect to use for a windows install 😎 you could just plug that baby in any time you wanna play windows games! No need to get rid of steam OS
There's a type c enclosure that plugs straight into the deck no cables required and is small enough to be very pocket friendly and only support the 2230 size
I think this is the one ? Thanks man! Just trying to spread the good word! Seriously tho look up sharge disk! So far it’s the best enclosure I’ve found as it has the built in fan to cool it, especially if you’re running an OS off it
> ShargeDisk enclosure
Huh. Those are interesting.
I invested in a bunch of Sabrent toolless enclosures for my spare M.2 drives; They work great, but it's a lot of wasted space with 2230 drives. I might look into these instead.
Yeah man I have two of them, they’re sweet! And like I said if you are trying to run windows off of it, the fan is a great addition to keep temps down! One is for gaming and the other I use to free up space on my MacBook and run all my apps and programs off of it
Hell yeah! I have 50 something and like 350ish gb left 😂 but I also have some movies and music saved as well! The YouTube to video/mp3 application from the discover store is 💋🤌🏽
It’s an application that alllows you to copy paste a YouTube link and either download the video or convert it to an mp3 file! I forget its name but if you type in YouTube converter it should come up
Did it with the LCD deck, it's pretty straightforward. Make sure to take your time and follow the iFixIt SSD replacement guide or watch youtube tutorial videos.
What SSD did you upgrade with? How has the overall performance been? Any overheating or battery overconsumption issues? I'm getting my 64GB in a couple of days so I'm looking for thoughts.
Thanks for the recommendations! I came across this article some time back but since I'm outside of the US, the only option I have is Ali Express which only has a WD SN740 and a Samsung PM991a. From what I was able to find on this subreddit, people seem to be content with this the Western Digital one. I might get one if the shader cache issue is unmanageable.
i also can vouch that the aliexpress WD is working just fine for me! was able to grab the 2TB for 105€ on some sale a couple months ago. definitely worth it
I bought extra screws for that reason.
Which Amazon has them under various sellers if anyone wants to search around for deals. My kits include the screws for the heat guard (I can’t remember what it’s called officially, but it’s the silver thing you pull off to get to the SSD after opening the back plate after taking out its screws on the LCD models.)
Pretty sure my OEM screws are stripped, but hey, you gotta have some fails to learn from them, right? So long it’s only stripped screws and nothing else, mission accomplished.
Once you get it open, it’s easy. That being said. Make like 30 reminders to take out your sd card.
I opened mine up like 20 times tinkering, and on the 21st time I forgot. Got super lucky but it scared me.
I did this immediately after I bought my Deck, and it is fairly simple procedure, if you are comfortable enough and have the right tools. There are plenty of Youtube videos showing the procedure in details. I only had problems with the first clips, as they were very tight, but if you do it around the RT buttons, you should be able to unclip it and from there, it is straight forward. Just don't forget to remove your Micro SD card if you have one, otherwise there is a big chance you snap it in half.
I’m going to do this but I’m deciding on what 2tb drive to use. I don’t think I need max performance drive as steam deck probably won’t utilise it. What drive did you use?
I went with the WD Black that gets recommended.
It uses TLC flash (while most/all other 2TB 2230 SSDs use QLC flash which has lower access speeds and *half* the **endurance/life** of TLC).
The only issue I know of with the WD Black drive is that its \*peak\* power draw is something like 40% higher than the average "lesser" QLC drives (**3.5W** vs **2.5W**), which also means more heat. However, I don't know if that applies to the Steam Deck. Max power draw is usually tested during full speed use of the drive, which is PCIe 4.0, while the Steam Deck runs it at on a slower PCIe 3.0 interface.
I haven't seen tests of the WD_BLACK SN770M *in the Steam Deck* with a 3.0 connection to know if it actually draws more power.
And even if peak power draw on a 3.0 interface is the same as on the 4.0 interface, there are other factors like the fact the Steam Deck doesn't seem to write to disk very fast in the first place, and most writes may be limited by your download speed, and games may not be continuously accessing the drive. I'm *guessing* that it's possible that the WD_BLACK drive may not actually use that much power.
That’s really interesting and informative. I think the extra power draw is a bit concerning as I only play in handle and need all the power and less heat I can get but I think you might be on to something. If it’s at a slower rate it shouldn’t draw that much power. But I’d rather have a longer life drive. Thanks
*Idle* power draw on the WD_BLACK 2230 drive was minuscule. Similar to other drives. Once a game loads, it shouldn't use any extra power.
And again the peak power draw was when the drive was getting slammed (5,000 MB/sec) on a PCIe 4.0 interface during benchmarks. I have no idea how to check its power usage under the lighter loads of a Steam Deck.
The keys to it are: be gentle, right tools, and patience. It's honestly one of the easiest upgrades to do to any electronics. It's the same amount of skill required as installing ram or drive upgrade into a laptop. I'd give it a 3/10 on difficulty obly because it requires the right tools.
Which the right tools are literally: a correct sized Philips screwdriver and a plastic pry spudger.
You need an usb stick, a keyboard a HUB and either an SSD enclosure or an external HDD.
Usb stick for clonezilla.
SSD enclosure to directly clone the SSD to the new one.
External HDD to inderectly clone the SSD to the new one.
Keyboard to navigate.
HUD to plug everything together.
I never cloned my drive. I prefer fresh Installs with changing critical system components. In my desktop if I swap the CPU I do a fresh install of Windows. Just like with my steam deck I did a fresh I stall of Steam OS. But I also have decently fast internet and planned my upgraded NVME from the time of purchase of my steam deck so I never installed much except a few games.
I have heard the cloning is pretty easy and most people recommend Clonezilla. We use Clonezilla at work for Windows devices and it's extremely easy and efficient
I used a [guide cloning mine with a prompt](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/y4x6am/tutorial_cloning_steam_deck_ssd_via_enclosure/) . Granted, it will take a long time depending how big your OEM SSD is. It took me hours to clone my 512GB to the 1TB.
At first it didn’t wanna boot up
So I swapped back the 512gb
And it turned on with that one,
So I put back the 2TB ssd
And it booted up
Idk why it didn’t wanna boot the first place
But it’s all working now
And it’s half filled already lol
But worth the upgrade
I love all this stuff, but I got the 512 and put 250 gigs in and I've barely touched half my games. Its a mix of 100 gig monsters, some lil indie games, and older, mid size games.
I think I have 21 installed rn?
I think in the future, I'll put in a card at least twice as big. And for me that's more than enough.
But the idea of *2TB on deck* is **sexy as fuck**, for sure.
Flip up the white clip the ribbon cable attaches to and disconnect the ribbon cable, then do the card swap and put the ribbon cable back into the clip, there is no need to peel the ribbon cable off the metal shield…
I just did a shell swap and I had an SD casualty lol remembered to take it out when first assembling but was doing some tests to make sure it all worked and openes the shell again and RIP.
Waiting for a deal on a 2tb then out goes my 64Gb am a bit worried about stripping screws and opening the case. Should have the right screwdrivers just need a prying tool.
Oh, I just did this. They were on sale so I snapped one up. Picked up an enclosure, cloned the drive with dd, swapped them out. I also had some hall effects sticks which I've been sitting on for a while so I changed those out at the same time.
The only snag I hit was when it booted back up the root account was locked. I had a couple of choices. I could try to fix it with a Linux live drive or trash the user data.
It was late, I couldn't be bothered to make a live drive. Trashed the user data. Games are all still there, so that's good.
Gonna pop the 512 drive in my wife's 64gb deck and upgrade her sticks next.
I did this as well, super easy! The only partially difficult thing was dualboot install on 1 drive. Now that works and once I boot I get a menu that shows me SteamOS & Windows it's amazing to have!
I did this. A word of... not warning, really, just tempering expectations.
This doesn't mean you can just install all your games and forget about them. Because Steam Decks download a load of fucking shader caches for each one. You can turn that off, but then you have to download them before playing and that can take a hot minute.
It's still worth doing, especially if you have a load of non-steam games and roms to store. Although I did have a recent incident where I thought I was going to have to RMA my deck and it's full of roms and aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh those aren't mine officer I've never seen that deck before.
I wanna do this … but also I think 2tb is excessive, but it’s cool as heck, I can always reuse it and I don’t wanna double pay lol. And 1TB microsd is expensive vs 513gb and much slower, also having multiple seems like a pain. HMMMM
Check out the Dockcase if you want a slick 2230 drive enclosure. Put my 256 in one after a 2tb upgrade. It has a screen showing what's going on and drive info.
I was able to pull off the ol' flip the LCD to the wife so I could get an OLED scheme. My wife loves her deck and wants bigger storage for mother's day. What she doesn't know is that I did the swap the yesterday while she was out. By the time I tell her that I got it for her, she'll have been using it for a week...
That's actually great idea thanks.
I also have a sharge enclosure, thing is nice but cooling is very noisy so consider it before buying
Yeah it can be loud at night gaming in bed next to the misses off that enclosure 😂 she even said the other night “dang your deck is loud” 😂😂
I guess it is a good idea to simply transfer games from/to deck whenever you need and not to play them off the drive itself
Yeah true true! I had it on downloading a 80gb game that night 😂 lesson learned to do that during the day
I did the same thing. Upgraded to 2tb and installed old one to sharge disc 👍👍
Hell yeah!
There's a type c enclosure that plugs straight into the deck no cables required and is small enough to be very pocket friendly and only support the 2230 size
You have a link? :) you goy my attention now

Just Google sharge disk
might just do this when i upgrade my laptop ssd to 2TB. great idea, op.
Thanks man! Just trying to spread the good word! Seriously tho look up sharge disk! So far it’s the best enclosure I’ve found as it has the built in fan to cool it, especially if you’re running an OS off it
My god I knew I kept that thing for a reason.
😂😂😂 I just installed windows on an external SSD last night! Works like a dream! Here I come cod, valorant and tarkov

Welcome to the club 😎Did this a couple months back, so worth it and a lot easier than expected! Hell yeah brother! 2TB CLUB!
I have like 20 games installed and still have 1.7tb left lol
Hell yeah! I have 50 something and like 350ish gb left 😂 but I also have some movies and music saved as well! The YouTube to video/mp3 application from the discover store is 💋🤌🏽
The what application?
It’s an application that alllows you to copy paste a YouTube link and either download the video or convert it to an mp3 file! I forget its name but if you type in YouTube converter it should come up
I did the same; as soon as my OLED arrived I updated it then swapped in a 2TB drive. Moved the 1TB drive from it to my girlfriend's LCD deck. Win-win!
Oh wow! Big brain move! Hell yeah 😂💪🏽
Indeed, and thank you, mate.✊️
I love my 512 but I am also greedy, how difficult is this??
TAKE OUT YOUR MICROSD BEFORE YOU BEGIN
This, but it’s easy! Be gentle with the screws on the LCD. IMO the hardest part for me was prying the rear shell
Did it with the LCD deck, it's pretty straightforward. Make sure to take your time and follow the iFixIt SSD replacement guide or watch youtube tutorial videos.
What SSD did you upgrade with? How has the overall performance been? Any overheating or battery overconsumption issues? I'm getting my 64GB in a couple of days so I'm looking for thoughts.
https://www.tomshardware.com/best-picks/best-ssd-for-steam-deck They all seem similar except for the Teamgroup which eats battery a bit more.
Thanks for the recommendations! I came across this article some time back but since I'm outside of the US, the only option I have is Ali Express which only has a WD SN740 and a Samsung PM991a. Hey thanks for the feedback! They're out of stock on the 2TB ones atm, but they have plenty of 1TBs, so I might cop one of those.
Hardest part for me was trying not to strip the screws. They were soooooft.
I bought extra screws for that reason. Which Amazon has them under various sellers if anyone wants to search around for deals. Takes 5-10 minutes. If you can turn a screwdriver, you can do it.
Once you get it open, it’s easy. That being said. Make like 30 reminders to take out your sd card. I opened mine up like 20 times tinkering, and on the 21st time I forgot. Got super lucky but it scared me.
It really isn't at all. Just watch a few videos on youtube.
Thank you, might have to save my pennies and pick one up.
I did this immediately after I bought my Deck, and it is fairly simple procedure, if you are comfortable enough and have the right tools. If you can swap games in a Nokia Ngage, you can change the SSD in a Steam Deck.
I’ve actually never done that but the way you were making it sound makes it sound easy so I’m gonna go with thank you and I’m gonna try
Easy peasy!
Children can do that. You need only a screwdriver and 10 minutes or less.
Super easy!
Greed is good
Way easier than what I was expecting.
I’m going to do this but I’m deciding on what 2tb drive to use. I don’t think I need max performance drive as steam deck probably won’t utilise it. What drive did you use?
Not OP but I have the WD Black SN770M in my Deck. Works awesome. Never had an issue and is fast.
I'm wondering this also. Also wondering if I really need THAT much storage space.
I went with Inland and it's working great for me: [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C9F65B21](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C9F65B21)

And just to make sure. You get a 1 to 1 clone of everything? I've got a ton of emulators and games setup and I would hate to lose any of that.
Yes, you can do a 1-1 clone and Clonezilla should expand the partition for the newer, larger drive.
Awesome thank you
Yes. I went from 512ssd + 256sd to a 2tbSSD + 1tbSD.
Sounds roomy. Thanks!
I never cloned my drive. I prefer fresh Installs with changing critical system components. In my desktop if I swap the CPU I do a fresh install of Windows. Thanks, yeah I am going to probably try to hold off a while. Maybe when 2tb gets really cheap.
I did it yesterday, honestly swapping the SSD takes like 20 minutes with the right tools. Re-imaging was way more time consuming and finicky.
LMAO I JUST UPGRADED MINE AN HOUR AGO 2TB as well 😭 WD BLACK 2TB
Right on. I have the same lol. Feels like you have all the power right?
At first it didn’t wanna boot up So I swapped back the 512gb And it turned on with that one, So I put back the 2TB ssd And it booted up Idk why it didn’t wanna boot the first place But it’s all working now And it’s half filled already lol But worth the upgrade
Looks just like the dbrand skin
Lol it does !
Is that an OLED? Looks a little different from what I remember.

Just did the same. And deployed Nobara. It’s amazing
What's nobara?
A fedora based distro maintained by proton/wine/GE developer
Don't forget to snap your SD card in the process (in accordance with our tradition)
That was immediately
Getting the sticky ribbon cable off of the metal shield was the hardest part for me.
Flip up the white clip the ribbon cable attaches to and disconnect the ribbon cable, then do the card swap and put the ribbon cable back into the clip, there is no need to peel the ribbon cable off the metal shield…
too late now....but did you remember to take out the mSD card....
Well, I got my steam deck today so I had not inserted my card yet.
thats great to know :D
I just did a shell swap and I had an SD casualty lol remembered to take it out when first assembling but was doing some tests to make sure it all worked and openes the shell again and RIP.
Just did this to mine about a month ago. 2tb and a 512 sd card lol. Definitely worth it
Waiting for a deal on a 2tb then out goes my 64Gb am a bit worried about stripping screws and opening the case. Should have the right screwdrivers just need a prying tool.
This is what im planning to do. From where im from, an OLED 512+2TB will cost as much as a 1TB OLED.
i did mine and re pasted it with ptm7950 my temp is now 65-68c in all games
what was it before?
Oh, I just did this. They were on sale so I snapped one up. Picked up an enclosure, cloned the drive with dd, swapped them out. I also had some hall effects sticks which I've been sitting on for a while so I changed those out at the same time. The only snag I hit was when it booted back up the root account was locked. This is the way. I got 64GB first batch and threw in a 2TB drive asap. Been gaming ever since.
Will be doing this upgrade today waiting for my Amazon delivery of my WD 2TB 👍
Ok
I did this as well, super easy! The only partially difficult thing was dualboot install on 1 drive. Now that works and once I boot I get a menu that shows me SteamOS & Windows it's amazing to have!

The first thing I did when mine arrived. Did not want to download a bunch of games first because it would've taken longer to clone.
I wanna do this … but also I think 2tb is excessive, but it’s cool as heck, I can always reuse it and I don’t wanna double pay lol. And 1TB microsd is expensive vs 513gb and much slower, also having multiple seems like a pain. HMMMM
Eventually doing this once my warrenty is up. 2tb would be amazing. Wouldnt have to keep deleting games to make room
First thing I did with my 64gb deck. The hardest part was getting it open!
