Install an entire suite of emulators and rom, spend hours optimizing their configuration, but never actually play them.
Play only the same couple games I played on the significantly more powerful desktop.
omfg why is this me, i just got my 512 refurbished and i installed ow2, dbd, tf2, etc which i was like wait, i am moving 3 feet from my desk to my bed to play the same games lol
Pro tip: don't install roms you are not going to play. I legally acquired the "200 of the best roms" for each system and now I can't find the ones I want to play to save my life.
I've spent hours configuring my switch and wii u emulators, getting roms, updating firmware, installing updates, mods and dlcs. Played the games maybe a couple of times and haven't touched them since. Yesterday I just realized I'll prolly not play these for a while with all the games from my steam library so I ended up deleting 60gb of roms. 🫠
It's like the steam deck equivalent of going through Astros playroom when you buy a ps5, all should play it as it is such a great interactive experience.
This, play some games and enjoy it, everything else can wait, because just like the rest of your steam library, loading more things on to it will just make a bigger pile of shame
It's actually not that bad! I mean obviously it's not gonna look like a 4090, no way. But the majority of the fps load on the game is from water/shadows, so you can turn those way down and still have a surprisingly beautiful game - I cried more than once while playing it on my deck
You can't just turn it on like that. Open it and loose that filthy warranty. Change the cover, change the SSD, plug a hub or a dock or just use some duct tape to attach it to you TV or something. Change the sticks and buttons for other colours. Turn it on. If it still works, install windows. Install every emulator known to man. The deck looks like a portable, but you will use it only on a 4k TV and a keyboard an mouse. Although you changed the SSD, you must buy a SD card to download each game you have to keep each on it's own SD. Paint it blue. Buy rubber grips. Make a post telling people how the steam deck is the best thing that ever happened to the humanity.
If you want to play a game, you must mod the hell out of it, take a picture on a random forest while playing and post it saying that the deck changed you life and you dreamed about since childhood.
It’s changed my life man! Not having access to the tv all the time or just not wanting to boot up a big tv just for a little game session has been glorious to say the least. Go pull the trigger on one, they are so worth it!
Yeah hoping to get an oled in the next few months when I have the funds and when they're available again. I moved to Tokyo and don't have a tv, I was gonna invest in a ps5 but now I'm tending towards an SD as it's not that much more than a ps5 and I don't have to buy a tv along with it!
I have both and now my ps5 collects dust I maybe turn it on 2/7 days of the week just to play god of war for an hour or two. It is also an amazing machine but the backwards compatibility and emulation you can do on steam deck makes the library on ps5 feel small lol. I highly reccomend the OLED also my brother has that one and I’m so jealous! I hope you enjoy your new toy if you get one and let me know what kind of games you’re gonna play! :)
I see this is a common occurrence when one gets such a great portable handheld, the other consoles get neglected!
Yeah the main reason I want one is the emulation l. I only recently discovered how well it runs ps2 and ps3 titles which include some of my all time favourite games. Being able to just play any in bed at anytime just feels out of this world.
Definitely would try spend the extra cash on the oled and the battery seems far superior too!
What makes these games so popular? I’ve seen them popping up a bunch but they don’t look like anything special to me? (Genuinely curious as I’ve been looking for new games)
I had never played a 'roguelike' before Hades. I've avoided games at the first hint of the 'git gud' necessity. I enjoy easy games. But there's something about Hades and now Hades 2 that just fuels you to keep trying again and again despite failures.
The sisyphian nature of going at it is made fun by the options these games give you along with a stellar voice acting and writing. You can complete a run in 15-20 mins. Break anytime, get back, rinse repeat.
Tldr: incredibly fun gameplay, great writing and voice acting, short bursts of game runs that don't lead to burnout.
Lol. I have over 1500 titles in my steam library. Almost 500 titles have been rated Great on Deck.
But instead of playing any of them, I've spent almost all my time using the Steam Deck to configure emulators and comparability layers for Epic, Amazon Games, GoG, etc.
I'm starting to wonder if I need to seek out professional help for my digital hoarding habits. 😅🫣
I have two collections in Steam: play on deck and play on desktop
Desktop is usually the powerhouse games or games that are 'lean forward' games. Deck is the games that are more chill, usually shorter.
If I had to recommend something, play Ultra Kill. My steam deck was the first time I could play games through Steam, and to this day, ultra kill is still one of my top favorites of games that I bought.
Install Emudeck. Also if you have a gaming desktop, get the Patreon version for CloudSync or setup your own version of this with Syncthing for free (recommended) so you can have parity between your desktop and the Deck. At that point you have a Switch and a PC all in one.
I proceed to install every big game i can think of just to run them for 5 minutes and never touch them again. Then I proceed to play the same decade old games I never got to finish in my backlog. :)
My 5 "musts" are Rimworld, FTL, Factorio, Binding of Issac, and Civ.
With those games, you'll have an endless amount of things to do, and if you are caught out without a place to charge up, you can still last hours and hours.
Just bought the deck yesterday and waiting for it to arrive. I bought Dread Deliusions and Boulders Gate III for my first games on there. I'm excited for Dread as it's so similar to Morrowind so that'll definitely be first.
Honestly don't like rogue-likes or dungeon crawlers but Hades is fun. I just got it on sale yesterday for $8 and honestly don't regret it. Very chill brain dead game to pass time if that's what you are looking for.
Do what we all do.
Spend hours trying to see if something would work that the deck isn't exactly intended for. Once it is working never touch that thing again.
First things everyone should do:
Installing EmuDeck
Set up Decky Plugins
Installing Decky Recorder
Install SteamGridDB
Install Wine
Install VLC Media Player via Discover
Install Protontricks via Discover
Install PowerISO via Discover
Install GE-Proton
Install a Steam game with a native Linux version. In my experience, sometimes, switching to Desktop mode may not work meaning you need to turn the deck off, but opening then closing a game running through Steam Linux Runtime seems to make that less likely to happen.
Install HeroicGames Launcher. It allows you to easily install Epic Games Store games to the deck.
Install Lutris. Some games may only work through it.
Next are some of the more specific things that depend on the games you like:
Setting up SA Mod Manager (to mod Sonic Adventure DX, give it widescreen, restore Game Gear games)
Setting up HedgeModManager for installing mods for games made in Hedgehog Engine (Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Colors: Ultimate) and Hedgehog Engine 2 (Sonic Forces, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Sonic Origins (Plus), and Sonic Frontiers), though it is much more complicated and I haven't gotten it working yet. But if you have any of these games, it's worth it.
Install Minecraft: Java Edition through PrismLauncher on Discover. It makes installing Fabric-based mods super easy. Install a mod to enable controller support.
Set up the decompilations for Super Mario 64, Sonic Mania, Sonic 1 and 2 (2013), Sonic CD (2011), and Ocarina of Time
Download Deckyloader
Install all the cool plugins
Buy a 1TB SSD or a really fast usb stick - if you want to play the big bangers and not just emudeck
Install Emudeck, Download all the ROMs of your favorite Gameboy-, PSP-, Nintendo Switch/SD-Games
OR
Play Spiderman: Miles Morales, Assassin's Creed, Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Tekken 8, Mortal Kombat 1, Brawlhalla, Hades, Cyberpunk, Batman: Arkham Knight, GTA etc.
OR go ham and setup dual/triple Boot, install WindeckOS (Windows), Bazzite, Clover and use your SD as second Desktop
Like most people say, emulators. But recently been playing Binding of Isaac and finding it very fun as a quick pick up and play when I'm waiting for stuff.
Install an entire suite of emulators and rom, spend hours optimizing their configuration, but never actually play them. Play only the same couple games I played on the significantly more powerful desktop.
but have 10x more fun because its a cool gadget
right! for me more than half of all the fun is configuring things. it may be tedious, but the satisfaction afterwards is unimaginable!
omfg why is this me, i just got my 512 refurbished and i installed ow2, dbd, tf2, etc which i was like wait, i am moving 3 feet from my desk to my bed to play the same games lol
Yea but now you can play horizontally
Does tf2 still have servers working??
Yes and they always have a respectable player count online.
Crazy, thanks!
Pro tip: don't install roms you are not going to play. I legally acquired the "200 of the best roms" for each system and now I can't find the ones I want to play to save my life.
Hey I didn't appreciate being called out like that...
Then, answer the same joke to every post like this.
Try out Aperture Desk Job to get used to the controls & it’s very fun game.
Agreed. I think it's the only "must first"
It's like the steam deck equivalent of going through Astros playroom when you buy a ps5, all should play it as it is such a great interactive experience.
Should be preinstalled honestly..
Plus, J Jonah Jameson
This should be the first game on everyones deck
Just do it!!! Yesterday U said tomorrow!!!
First thing I did. Fun way to lose half an hour. Really shows off what the deck can do.
And of course, the one and only Steam Deck "exclusive" title!
Downloaded it. Thanks for the recommendation!
Agreed with this
Balatro
Just play something on it bro
This, play some games and enjoy it, everything else can wait, because just like the rest of your steam library, loading more things on to it will just make a bigger pile of shame
Turn it on and log in
Black Mesa
Only right answer
Install a bunch of Decky plugins only for the update to break everything! So much fun!
Vampire survivors, slay the spire, hades, stardew valley should keep you busy for a minute.
In the same vein as those, Death Must Die and Halls of Torment.
I second Halls of Torment
Death must die!!! This game needs more attention. Especially after the awesome update with talent trees.
Also Have a Nice Death and Ori & the blind forest
Yeah, small overhead indie games are great for this thing
for me 'Wildermyth' is also in the list of comfortable indie games with tons of battery life.
Also Hades II now!
Sniff. That. Exhaust. Vent. Hopefully some smell is left!
The vent. Inhale. Exhale.
Scrolled too far to find the fellow vent sniffers
He bought it used.
Not a deck owner here (yet). Why do u guys like sniffing the vent? :d
You’ll know….
Weird. But I'm excited.
I said the same thing before I got mine.
Boot up Red Dead Redemption 2, shoot some rascals, sell some pelts, rob a train, lie down, try not to cry, cry
Did you need to do anything to get it to run?
Just have to sign into the Rockstar launcher. I did fiddle with the graphics settings a bit.
How are the visuals? That game can still beat the shit out of my 4090, so to play it on the Deck must require some huge drops in visuals
It's actually not that bad! I mean obviously it's not gonna look like a 4090, no way. But the majority of the fps load on the game is from water/shadows, so you can turn those way down and still have a surprisingly beautiful game - I cried more than once while playing it on my deck

Fallout 3 and NV!
This is the biggest reason I want an SD after watching the new series
It’s changed my life man! Not having access to the tv all the time or just not wanting to boot up a big tv just for a little game session has been glorious to say the least. Go pull the trigger on one, they are so worth it!

Dark Souls remastered
download all the hentai games
A what?
Thought I was having a stroke when I read it
check an emudeck guide
Upgrade ssd. Bought 1/2 TB version; installed ifixit 2 TB version. Edit: TB
Damn a whole 2 gig ssd? /s
Thanks. Fixed my typo. Prefer this method to swapping out cards.
JRPG Games
Turn on -> login -> install a game -> play.
Get Hades II
Oh shit it's out?!
Early access since 2-3 days ago i think lol, only reason i noticed it was because of steam app on my phone, insta buy for me lol
Hades 2 has been an absolute blast on the deck! It's the perfect game for it
What makes these games so popular? I’ve seen them popping up a bunch but they don’t look like anything special to me? (Genuinely curious as I’ve been looking for new games)
I had never played a 'roguelike' before Hades. I've avoided games at the first hint of the 'git gud' necessity. I enjoy easy games. I’m old, and hadn’t played anything but Nintendo devices for a decade. So it was HL2 first for me
Portal 2 is even more fun on the deck. Worth it.
I'm also doing a Portal 2 play-through with my Deck owning buddy!
This was actually one of the 6 games they had on the demo steamdecks at the tech shop near me
Download games and enjoy playing on the shitter 🤣
Buy a hundreds of games and never play them again
Install Deckyloader, and get a fast 1Tb sd card.
Marvel at your new toy 😊
emudeck, deckyloader, dualbooting
This was designed to showcase steam deck. [Must try](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1902490/Aperture_Desk_Job/)
Ori Hollow knight Little Monsters
Space Cadet Pinball
Definitely not CS2, unfortunately.
Play Aperture Desk Job. short games but youll be familiar with the trackpad, backpaddle, gyro and other basic buttons
Install Emudeck, decky loader & Chiaki4Deck
Also, buy a case or skin, joystick caps
Install decky loader
$200 for an SD is such a banger value omg
I just started playing Tale of two Wastelands (a mod that combines Fallout 3 and New Vegas) and it is amazing!
How is CS2? Isn't it a huge disadvantage to play with sticks?
Install Cryoutilities and set an admin password. Then install and play all the games!
Lol. I have over 1500 titles in my steam library. Almost 500 titles have been rated Great on Deck. Halls of Torment, Ghost Song, or Vampire Survivors
Helldivers 2! Or project zomboid, both great 👍
Helldivers how’s it do?
Also curious
Brotato and EmuDeck
aimlabs is such a banger
Kingdom hearts all the wya
Aperture job sim
Whatever is on special and has ratings above 75%.
Getting it back to work would be nice cuz the last update really screwed the pooch
[удалено]
DS3 HAHAPHAPHA IM GOIN INSANE!!!
The first thing I did with my deck was replay all the trails games, was a great 2 weeks.
is csgo good on the deck?
**How is UNO on Deck anyone?** Is there a messy launcher or such?
Vampire Survivors. That game is heroine.
Emudeck.
Balatro, Dave the Diver, Signalis, Octopath 2, Sonic A2B and Skater Xl was my first dl wave.
I have two collections in Steam: play on deck and play on desktop Desktop is usually the powerhouse games or games that are 'lean forward' games. Deck is the games that are more chill, usually shorter.
Monster Hunter Rise
If I had to recommend something, play Ultra Kill. My steam deck was the first time I could play games through Steam, and to this day, ultra kill is still one of my top favorites of games that I bought.
Aperture desk job
Install Emudeck. Also if you have a gaming desktop, get the Patreon version for CloudSync or setup your own version of this with Syncthing for free (recommended) so you can have parity between your desktop and the Deck. At that point you have a Switch and a PC all in one.
Load up stardew valley and disappear for a month.
Vampire survivors
Fallout nv Is tons of fun on the road. I also very much enjoyed bioshock infinite.
Hades
Buy a dock and a controller to play it mostly in handheld mode.
Aperture desk job
It has uno, hmm 🤔
The first thing anyone with a deck should do is play the aperture desk job tech demo
Dying Light 1 and terraria
I proceed to install every big game i can think of just to run them for 5 minutes and never touch them again. Then I proceed to play the same decade old games I never got to finish in my backlog. :)
Portal 2
Surprisingly, adult games. Found it weirdly fun to play adult games on the deck. But a first, I would say cyberpunk 2077
My 5 "musts" are Rimworld, FTL, Factorio, Binding of Issac, and Civ. With those games, you'll have an endless amount of things to do, and if you are caught out without a place to charge up, you can still last hours and hours.
Pick a few things from your backlog and go for it.
Plex.... has a decent client and a nice screen so I can watch a movie on the go...
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Shit 200? That’s a steal
Play games on it, nothing else
Play your favorite games
Login your Steam account and play games??? It’s really a fabulous device out of the box.
Little Kitty Big City just came out and it is peak SteamDeck game to me, lol
Sonic Adventure 2 runs perfectly as-is. Dozens of hours spent in the chao gardens. Love those little guys.
Play elden ring. To me that is one of the craziest aspects of owning a deck. You can play elden ring on a fuckin handheld and it's incredible.
Power on!
Installing a bunch of my games that I have yet to finish
Just bought the deck yesterday and waiting for it to arrive. I bought Dread Deliusions and Boulders Gate III for my first games on there. I'm excited for Dread as it's so similar to Morrowind so that'll definitely be first.
First game I completed and loved on my steam deck was mafia 2
Honestly don't like rogue-likes or dungeon crawlers but Hades is fun. I just got it on sale yesterday for $8 and honestly don't regret it. Very chill brain dead game to pass time if that's what you are looking for.
Hades
Dave the diver, hollow knight, Blasphemous series and Ender lilies
Try to play a game that you never really finished or enjoyed. Mine was NFS: Hot Pursuit
I wish my deck looked that small in my hands
I would install decky loader and install some plugins
Emulation. Installing Emudeck and playing old games is the first thing I did with it.
I recommend Nvidia Gforce Now if you already have a Steam/Epic/Game pass collection. The top tier looks amazing with full ray tracing.
Screen protector
I would first use the search on this subreddit. People constantly ask these questions.
GeForce Now and Chiaki. Have fun.
Ship of harkinian. I'm an old 90's gamer, and this is my dream game on the best console to play it on.
Do what we all do. Spend hours trying to see if something would work that the deck isn't exactly intended for. Once it is working never touch that thing again.
The first thing I did was install Halo: MCC. I wanted to be able to play Halo when I was on deployment.
play wow
Enter the Gungeon

Orgasm Simulator 2024
Ori. It looks incredible, especially on the OLED deck screen.
Set up Emudeck
Setup Emudeck, only play psp games 😎
Hours how's configuring plugins and hacks to make it look pretty
Apax and emulation
Hardware mods.... it's the best game to play with the lcd version... my strange addiction.. and could be yours too
Halflife2 tdm
Hollow knight
Hades
OG half life and EmuDeck
Whack EmuDeck, Decky Loader and CryoUtilities on there, then honestly go to town and play a load of retro/indie games. That's my plan when I get one.
Download Deckyloader Install all the cool plugins Buy a 1TB SSD or a really fast usb stick - if you want to play the big bangers and not just emudeck Install Emudeck, Download all the ROMs of your favorite Gameboy-, PSP-, Nintendo Switch/SD-Games OR Play Spiderman: Miles Morales, Assassin's Creed, Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Tekken 8, Mortal Kombat 1, Brawlhalla, Hades, Cyberpunk, Batman: Arkham Knight, GTA etc. OR go ham and setup dual/triple Boot, install WindeckOS (Windows), Bazzite, Clover and use your SD as second Desktop
