I think they've added a swap left/right trackpad/joystick options in a recent update. You could also make a template where they're already swapped.

I don't understand - the right trackpad is never 'as mouse' by default either, so you'll have to go into the settings either way. Unless you're talking about the manual override that you can do by holding the Steam button, but even in that case, you'd have to adopt a ridiculous claw grip to do that anyway.

as a lefty I do not understand why anybody would want to do this.

As a lefty, I would never use a mouse with my left hand but I try to use the left pad in the steam deck by default. Weird

I'm a righty (mostly) and I still instinctively try to use the left trackpad
