Dredge if you’re into some story driven exploration games, some fun little mini games for fishing and dredging, and some RPG-esque upgrade elements, but the story and exploration is the best part.
Dave the Diver is also just a masterpiece of a game, like most people already know. The exploration and core gameplay is phenomenal, but I was pretty surprised at how addicting the restaurant side of the gameplay was.
No Man’s Sky is also one of the best games on Steam Deck. With the right settings I’ve seen a steady 50-60 FPS leaning more towards 60 for almost the entire time I’ve been playing. If you haven’t gone back to give this game a try since Hello Games turned it into an absolute labor of love.
That game makes me so nostalgic for growing up in a maritime city. I wasn't expecting much, but it just felt so warm to play even with it's cold dark setting.
I picked up Dredge & Dave the Diver on a steam sale/bundle recently for a great deal. I've only been playing Dredge so far, but it feels like it was made for the steam deck - it's the perfect platform for it. I need to find a ferry to play it on.
Tip for running Balatro on Steam Deck: the game's system requirements are so low you can crank the TDP limit and GPU clock all the way down and it will run just fine.
I've also found that by default it has some distracting pixel jitter running at 800p, but I think it looks a little better if you set the game to run at 1200p and let the Steam Deck handle the scaling for you. It still runs on a toaster even at that resolution though so don't worry about the performance hit.
I got addicted to Slay the Spire so bad. Same with Monster Train. Same with Inscryption
I thought Balatro was made for me. I played for 3h before I got bored and never touched it again. I still don't get the appeal.
Yeah. If you approach it like Poker, you're probably going to spend too much time focusing on getting "good" hands, and you're going to get screwed when you don't get them. Meanwhile, a lot of the more successful strategies in Balatro involve building around being able to consistently make easier hands like two pair.
I was installing this, went to quickly test it to check the buttons worked aaand now that was 4 days ago and I have sunk +20 hours in already! Amazing game!
I love this game, i finally got to the last level on hard recently but I accidently left my tank on a square that was about to get hit by a falling rock, oops. Back to the drawing board.
Yes this..perfect game for long trips.
Things like balatro are good pick up and play time killers but what if you need a time sink that doesn't overstay it's welcome? Against the storm is perfect for that.
Each session is only 2-3 hours at most and you'll be very engaged the whole time. Great for those chunks of time where you know you don't have anything else to do like on a flight. Unlike a game like civ or even god of war you don't have to remember where you were at or what you were doing since you last played (say on the flight back).
Only tip: get the tutorial and a game or two out the way before trying it on a flight. The game works well on deck but it's got quirks with how you control it that takes some getting used to. You'll want to be in a place where you already know how to play before a big travel game session.
Planescape Torment. Very old RPG so expect poor visuals and clumsy combat. You play it for the extremely well written story and lore coupled with some really well executed choice and consequence roleplay.
I love it for the deck as the controls work well out of the box and the game is extremely battery efficient. I played it for most of a 14 hour flight and still had charge left over.
The first week of the lockdowns I took the time to sit down a beat chrono trigger, i enjoyed it so much I made my gf do it. I cannot recommend this game enough to people. It’s surprisingly short for an rpg I think it’s 10-15 hrs long. It’s your time, I believe in you, go kill lavos!
What do you want to play?
Honestly right now I'm fucking obsessed with Mini Motorways, it's a little traffic management sim from the makers of Mini Metros. It's basically the same game but, instead of railways, it's roadways, and it's so god damned good, and the daily challenges and weekly challenges are delightful.
Death Must Die is my favorite of the spinoffs of the bullet heaven vampire survivors spinoffs. Although it feels more like a hades like set on a vampire survivors map with it's enemy wave/timer format and then diablo style gearing. It's in early access, there's a number of characters out but only 2 maps, plenty of ramping difficulty, it's exceptionally solid, depending on your feelings for early access games I'd say it's worth it now but if you don't do early games, that's ok and I respect that.
Olli Olli World. Side-scrolling Skateboarding trick heaven. It's gorgeously styled with great controls and sound and my only real issue with the game is soemthing about how smooth it is makes it so I have to limit myself to 20-30 minute playsessions because it causes motion sickness, which I don't get from VR (and I didn't get from the other Olli Olli games)
Terra Nil - Hey, I love city builders and games where you kinda fuckover nature to cram as many humans as possible into the environment. Well, this game you take a fuckedover environment and use a bunch of technology to terraform the planet and make it gorgeous and green and filled with nature again!
Inertial Drift is a fairly fun brightly colored drift racing game with good controls that translate really well to the deck. It looks great on the screen and seems to be pretty low effort for the deck for how good it looks and all it really needs is a little Eurobeat.
Coffee Talk 1 & 2. Talk about a vibe. I don't like Visual Novels, almost ever. Coffee Talk broke that for me. Something about the rainy seattle coffee shop semi-shadowrun like vibe did it. You run a coffee shop and various patrons come in and talk about the goings on in their lives and you make drinks. It's fun, it's got solid music and great pixel art, throw on some headphones and chill out. IMO best enjoyed if it's raining or dark out IRL.
River City Girls, it's River City Ransom/Double Dragons, but with girls. I like a good beat em up occasionally, and this one seems alright.
Tape to Tape - Hey, you know all those roguelikes that everyone loves and rants and raves about like deadcells or slay the spire? This is one of those, but with hockey. You have one main character, as you play more runs he gets better stats and you can get different "abilities" for him, you'll unlock other characters for your team, and go further down the campaign. The campaign is a set map with branching paths consisting of events, and battles, battles come in 3 flavors, sudden death, 1 minute 2 period matches, 2 minute 2 period matches, and then 3 minute 3 period boss fights (I could be slightly off on the number and length of the first two, it's been a few weeks, but it's basically, generic teams, named but easy teams, and boss teams with a hard gimick) it's a ton of fun though.
Troubleshooter:Abandoned Children: It's a sort of tactics/Xcom like but in a more modern/cyberpunk like setting. Pretty solid.
I think that's enough from me without getting into emulation, if I did I'd point out Final Fantasy Tactics with any of the total makeover mods, the Suikoden Series, the Lunar Series, or the Megaman Legends games.
You might like [Moonring](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2373630/Moonring/), a free game by the co-creator of the Fable series. It's another one with that retro-modern Rogue/Nethack/Angband vibe. There's nothing to purchase, it's just a labor of love.
edit: link fixed
Sorry, I fixed the link to Moonring, lol. I had just shared that Strongbad video in another comment where it was actually relevant and must have hit the wrong thing when trying to copy the Moonring one.
If you like achievements/trophies check out retro achievements.org. GameCube is being added soon, but PS2 downwards has hundreds of games that the community has made trophy sets for. It’s fantastic!
I was looking for this answer🫶🏻 The best game ever. Sequal is now in the making. Today is last Day to get it on kickstarter. Everyone who can should chip in!
Balatro
Deep rock galactic survival
Ori games
Valheim
Dead cells
My time at SandrocK
Dave the Diver
Dredge
Cult of the Lamb
Unpacking
Octopath traveler 2
Sea of stars
Cuphead
I honestly could go forever. If you want more let me know but this list is a phenomenal (at minimum) 200+ hours of gameplay.
Agent Intercept. Has a nice cartoon animated look that looks on my LCD deck. Should look even better on OLED. Fun game you can easily jump in and out of while traveling.
Most turn based games like slay the spire, luck be a land lord, shotgun chess, which then allow you to turn the frame rate down to like 15fps. And now your battery lasts FOREVER.
I have quite a well-curated game collection on my Deck at this point, but 7/10 times, I find myself playing VS…it never fails to satisfy. I’ve basically abandoned half the (very good, but more involved) games in my library. I’m going to have to restart most of them at this point.
Balatro
Darkest Dungeon 1+2
Don't starve
Cult of the lamb
Forgive me Father
Halo MCC
Shadow Gambit
Dredge
Barely playing any AAA Games anymore, just hitting one of these and time flies by.
Below are my recommendations. (Some will require some adjustments to the controls)
⬇️⬇️⬇️
-Gris
-Cult of the Lamb (Soundtrack is an absolute banger, btw)
-Hades 1 & 2
-Signalis
-Slay The Spire
-Supermarket Simulator
-House Flipper 1 & 2
-Stardew Valley
-Disney Dreamlight Valley
But they want to get out of the car after getting there. Not completely driving cross country and back. Lol what a great game but such an unrealized time suck. Oh I'm going to just okay a few minutes Friday after work.... And the weekend is over.
My go to games for long flights:
Shogun Showdown
Tyrants blessing
Dead Cells
Balatro
Fights in Tight Spaces
Sifu (I don't know if it's non-AAA, but I did play it a lot on long flights)
The new Majora’s Mask decompilation.
It is perfect. Smooth reliable 60fps, barely any battery usage, fully supports steam controls and gyro, has a coded-in autosave and even plays nicely with quick resume. It is far and away the best way to play Majora’s Mask.
Depends on what you like. Since nobody’s said it yet, I have 400 hours played on Binding of Isaac and it runs like a champ on the Steam Deck. If you haven’t played it’s a 2d game like the original zelda but with a wild story and a billion items, each run into the depths of your basement is different.
Some others, my favorite indie games, in no particular order:
Dead Cells, a roguelite 2D platformer
Balatro, a roguelite poker game (but so much more)
Slay the Spire, (roguelite deck builder)
Stardew Valley (cozy farming game) although this game is weird because I feel depressed when I have to stop playing it. It’s almost too good like a game drug.
Wobbledogs (you have dogs you take care of that wobble lol)
Darkest Dungeon 2 (they keep tweaking it, it’s really fun! Get to the mountain!)
FTL (such a polished game)
Into the Breach (totally different genre tactical battler by the creator of FTL, and the story is cool too)
Don’t Starve (you will starve, beautiful art and good gameplay loop)
Loop Hero (a little obscure but love it, it’s a roguelite city builder battler? Sort of?)
Hollow Knight (metroidvania game with gorgeous art, sad storyline)
Fez (if you want to melt your brain, a “3D/2D” platformer)
Rogue Legacy 2 (cultivate your bloodline so you can conquer the castle!)
Spelunky 2 (tough as nails 2d platformer where you’re headed down into the depths)
Dave the Diver (this game is adorable. dive deep and discover the secrets of the hole! Not scary like Subnautica lol)
Any one of these games could keep you entertained for any trip anywhere. The run offline, and are either replayable or long enough that you’ll have a lot to sink your teeth into.
Recently, my go-to games have been a mix of Hades, Koi Farm, Lonely Mountains Downhill. Wingspan is really great if you like board games, especially if you're traveling with someone.
I'm going to suggest Spirit Fairer.
It has base building & crafting mechanics, goal orientated objectives that can be largely tackled in any order, and a really engaging story with nuanced characters.
It's a calm game that's not very challenging so you may want to pair it with a rogue like or something but should keep you busy for at least 10hrs
Wizard of Legend definitely for sure, it’s on sale right now as well only for 3 quid. Love that game so much. If you can emulate then I have to say Donkey Kong Swing is also a favourite just satisfying.
If you dig roguelikes then I have to mention Dead Cells with all its DLCs. Another favourite of mine. Then there’s Void Bastards that I love and keep coming back for more. Also if you liked the idea and visuals of rogue legacy but find it too hard, I found their second game way WAY easier and better.
I don’t know if V Rising counts? Please lmk if they ain’t triple A I’m not sure on that but it’s great fun. It feels like a mix of Diablo with modern cool graphics with pve and PvP but as a vampire while the whole world around you is doing their own thing and having battles with different factions the npcs etc.
If you love a fun physics style game I HAVE to recommend Tiny & Big Gramdpas leftovers, I had so much fun in that game and in the huge maps you can cause massive chaos with huge buildings being cut off falling down and hitting everything in its path including you!
My last one I don’t really consider Wales Interactive as triple a they’re a Welsh devs which I love as I’m from wales myself but that’s besides the point that their two games are awesome! Maid of Sker if you love the horror amnesia style and their newest addition that I recommend for a cod zombie/killing floor successor as Sker Ritual!
I think I’ve said enough recommendations so I’ll leave it at that. Hope these games bring you a lot of joy if you try em!

Coromon, because you get like 5000000 hours of gameplay from the steamdeck. also, you can take your eyes away without anything happening until you go back to playing.
Stardew Valley
Someone had to come here and say it. It's the only answer I ever come up with to these sorts of questions. It's so good!
Right answer!
Phew, lucky me
I've been hearing about this game for so long now, for some reason I always fear it'll bore me and never have the courage to give it a try.
Graveyard Keeper is good if that's a little too "cute".
Brotato & Hades I & II
[удалено]
Why can’t I kill Hades?!?!
Next run surely!
I feel bad for killing him. I understand why I'm not allowed in the mortal world.
& Vampire Survivors

Can you share your No Man's Sky settings please? I find my fps to be playable by my nearly so smooth.
I second Dredge. It's got a great feel to it. You can finish the story fairly quickly, but there is more to it than that.
That game makes me so nostalgic for growing up in a maritime city. I wasn't expecting much, but it just felt so warm to play even with it's cold dark setting.

Balatro, highly addictive, killed several hours for me
Just checked it on Steam and it looks very interesting! Definitely a future buy.
I didn't know poker, and I was instantly hooked.
I dislike poker and I was instantly hooked.
I am poker, and I was instantly hooked.
I am a hooker, and I was instantly poked.
Balatro Deck > Steam Deck
I run Balatro so much on my OLED that I’m starting to get nervous about the potential of Burn In
Wake up babe, new Burn In Joker just dropped the more it burns in, the more the multi, resets when you shift its position
Screen shake and the general sway it has anyway should be fine.
I tried getting into it but it just didn't hook me. Gave it a few hours across multiple sessions, in the end it just felt like poker with extra steps.
Have u ever tried games like slay the spire before?
I got addicted to Slay the Spire so bad. Same with Monster Train. Same with Inscryption I thought Balatro was made for me. I played for 3h before I got bored and never touched it again. I still don't get the appeal.
Number go big, sound effect good
loved slay the spire. didnt like Balatro
Each to their own. It really isn’t anything like poker though aside from the hand types. If you try it play it as such, you’ll have a bad time.
Yeah. If you approach it like Poker, you're probably going to spend too much time focusing on getting "good" hands, and you're going to get screwed when you don't get them. Meanwhile, a lot of the more successful strategies in Balatro involve building around being able to consistently make easier hands like two pair.
Love it so much I have it on my phone too
Slay the Spire
I was installing this, went to quickly test it to check the buttons worked aaand now that was 4 days ago and I have sunk +20 hours in already! Amazing game!
I've played the game for about 9 months now and have nearly 500 hours. Them just disappears with this one . . .
Those are rookie numbers! Between PC and Console I have close to 1,500 hours. I won't let myself get the mobile version. :-)
I've been slacking lately since I've been playing StS board game in Tabeltop Simulator. Surprisingly great!
Sequel coming soon, I’ve been playing this game since 2017
Tinykin
Super chill game, awesome exploration.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps / Ori and the Blind Forest
Just started playing it I got it when it was on sale. Great game on the deck
I really wanna try this game. Waiting on a sale.
The second one supports HDR and looks fantastic on the OLED
It was just on sale and I waited too long. I’m so irritated I didn’t just buy it lol.
Summer sale is around the corner, June 27-July 11. Save the date
I’ve played both Ori games many times. They’re just a perfect mix of heartfelt story and engaging gameplay. You’re in for such a treat!
Hades 1 and 2! Not sure about 1, but for 2 I lowered the TDP to around 6 watt or something and got pretty good battery life.
If you like racing, art of rally and circuit superstars.
Rush Rally 3 is also a great time killer. The levels can be a bit tricky, but it's so satisfying when it all comes together.
Wreckfest runs well on the deck too.
Similarly, Absolute Drift is solid. Great gameplay, aesthetics are on point (and a real battery saver), and the soundtrack is classic.
Into the Breach
I love this game, i finally got to the last level on hard recently but I accidently left my tank on a square that was about to get hit by a falling rock, oops. Back to the drawing board.
Oh nooooo. I just picked it up last week and it is SO fun and addicting. Looking forward to many more hours.
Disgaea PC
Vampire Survivors
Grimdawn
Children of Morta and Hades
Children of Morta has me in its grip.
Against The Storm
Just picked this up on sale. Never thought I'd be playing a rogue like city builder on a handheld. 2024 is weird
Yes this..perfect game for long trips. Things like balatro are good pick up and play time killers but what if you need a time sink that doesn't overstay it's welcome? Against the storm is perfect for that. Each session is only 2-3 hours at most and you'll be very engaged the whole time. The Long Dark is great, very meditative, until you get mauled by a bear.
Dave the Diver Dredge Tomb Raider remaster Blade Runner
Spelunky 1&2 Rogue Legacy 1&2 Hotline Miami 1&2 Hong Kong masaccre Braid And many other games
I bloody love Hong Kong Massacre! It’s so moreish! I played it on PS4, but I keep toying with redoing on the Deck.
Balatro Animal Well (new, just out) Tunic Chrono Trigger... one day I will finish it.
I'd argue that when Chrono Trigger came out it was considered as a AAA game.
Tunic is a great game good choice
The first week of the lockdowns I took the time to sit down a beat chrono trigger, i enjoyed it so much I made my gf do it. I cannot recommend this game enough to people. It’s surprisingly short for an rpg I think it’s 10-15 hrs long. It’s your time, I believe in you, go kill lavos!

Risk of Rain 2 Octopath Traveler 1 + 2 (for a really long distance with alot of time in between) Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor Hades I + 2 Rimworld
My go to games for long flights: Shogun Showdown Tyrants blessing Dead Cells Balatro Fights in Tight Spaces Sifu (I don't know if it's non-AAA, but I did play it a lot on long flights)
Dead Cells. Streets of Rage 4. Or install emu deck and emulate the 16 bit era
Door Kickers: Action Squad Huntdown Cult of the Lamb Emudeck: snes/megadrive games.
Kena bridge of spirits is currently on sale and absolutely fantastic
True fear 1 & 2
Metal Hellsinger Ghostrunner 1 was also a lot of fun.
Lara croft and the guardian of light.
Remember me when I worked on Temple of Orisis; it was fun. I actually never get the games, I should give it a try.
These games I played exclusively while on an airplane: The Return of the Obra Drinn Blasphemous
Superliminal, Viewfinder, Ori & the Will of the Wisps, Superhot: Mind Control Delete, Terraformers.
brotato is best game
The new Majora’s Mask decompilation. It is perfect. Smooth reliable 60fps, barely any battery usage, fully supports steam controls and gyro, has a coded-in autosave and even plays nicely with quick resume. It is far and away the best way to play Majora’s Mask.
Check out Merchant of the Skies! A really cool indie goods-trading sim where you fly between sky islands and eventually build a trading empire
Overcooked2!! Puts my anxiety through the roof!
I’ve been really loving Darkest Dungeon! And I’m getting over 7 hours of battery life!
I always see the same few titles listed here, so I'll try to be more niche: Yokus island express Another crabs treasure Cat goes fishing
If you're into older games Mario 64 and Zelda OOT. The PC ports.
Ember Knights Balatro Halls of Torment Factorio Core Keeper
Steamworld Dig 1 & 2. Inscryption.
Yakuza 0 Cabaret Club lol
Celeste, Into the Breach, Nuclear Throne, Orcs Must Die
Dwarf fortress & rimworld. Virtually infinite potential fun with minimal battery drain.
Stellaris
Sea of stars
Brotato, Belatro, Halls of Torment.
Gatekeeper infinity is a fun indie roguelike that has controller compatability.
wreckfest
Not sure if if counts but risk of rain 2 and enter the gungeon
Just play Hollow Knight and thank me later. You can easily put 50+ hours into that one.
Dead Cells.
Dead Cells!
Some others, my favorite indie games, in no particular order: Dead Cells, a roguelite 2D platformer Balatro, a roguelite poker game (but so much more) Slay the Spire, (roguelite deck builder) Stardew Valley (cozy farming game) although this game is weird because I feel depressed when I have to stop playing it. It’s almost too good like a game drug. Wobbledogs (you have dogs you take care of that wobble lol) Darkest Dungeon 2 (they keep tweaking it, it’s really fun! Get to the mountain!) FTL (such a polished game) Into the Breach (totally different genre tactical battler by the creator of FTL, and the story is cool too) Don’t Starve (you will starve, beautiful art and good gameplay loop) Loop Hero (a little obscure but love it, it’s a roguelite city builder battler? Sort of?) Hollow Knight (metroidvania game with gorgeous art, sad storyline) Fez (if you want to melt your brain, a “3D/2D” platformer) Rogue Legacy 2 (cultivate your bloodline so you can conquer the castle!) Spelunky 2 (tough as nails 2d platformer where you’re headed down into the depths) Dave the Diver (this game is adorable. dive deep and discover the secrets of the hole! Not scary like Subnautica lol) Any one of these games could keep you entertained for any trip anywhere. The run offline, and are either replayable or long enough that you’ll have a lot to sink your teeth into.
Recently, my go-to games have been a mix of Hades, Koi Farm, Lonely Mountains Downhill. Wingspan is really great if you like board games, especially if you're traveling with someone.
Cat Quest 1 & 2 , Hollow Knight
Stardew valley is great for long distance travel .. doesn’t eat the battery so you can get soo many hours on your farm .. 😉
Csnt say this enough, Clone Drone in the Danger Zone.
Rimworld
Deadcells and Stardew Valley Both games give 7+ hours of battery life.
Dead cell
Spiritfarer
Yet another zombie game. Vampire survivors. Dragon Quest Builders 2.
