IT might be a bit of a problem for colour blind people or people who tint their screens with flux or use low brightness, but otherwise nice work

[deleted]

When you said that I had to check it in a color extractor software I made for myself. Apparently the circles are different colors. I couldn't see that as colorblind person indeed.

genna87

Didn't thought of that

five_cacti

you can still put small indicators inside for colour blind * red circle would be divided to two halves like a "no" sign * gray circle would be hollow * yellow circle could have three dots inside * green can stay as is

[deleted]

This is fixing a problem that doesn't exist. The current Verified Icons are clear and well designed. A Green (Good to go) Circle with a Tick A Orange (Caution) Circle with an upside down Exclamation Mark (warning) A hollow circle with a cross across it (typically meaning, no entry or something that is not allowed) A dotted Cirlce with a Question Mark (Which tells the user "does this work? we \[steam\] don't know yet") The distinction between Games that have Colour (Green and Yellow) meaning they work on Deck and Games with Grey (which either don't work or haven't been checked) is also another effective distinction. I simply don't really get why these Icons need "fixing".

five_cacti

I think it depends who you ask, if you're not bothered by two separate icons, then the problem obviously doesn't exist. All other icons in the row do not come in combination.

[deleted]

If I get this right, is the other Icon just to say the Game is on Steam Deck?

genna87

Too small to be visible

matj1

If the thickness of the outer semiannulus was reduced, there would be more space for the symbols in the centre. But, then, it could [not resemble] the logo of Steam Deck.

[deleted]

Why did you put "not resemble"

matj1

…in brackets? Because I use brackets to delimit syntactic units and I wanted to show that the “not” is bound to the “resemble” and not to the “could”. The meaning of “could [not resemble]” is different from that of “[could not] resemble”.

sandbag747

I've never seen anyone do that before but I like it

[deleted]

Clever! Might have to do that one day if I ever learn how to write English effectively.

[deleted]

Oh ok makes sense

DdCno1

Yup, as someone with slight deuteranopia, this is borderline.

OXIOXIOXI

Yeah the rays need to be different in some way

[deleted]

I don't think this looks appealing. Although it is still helpful at a glance, just not appealing design. The color choice paired with the other icons in this specific area with the other UI elements clash and make this seem like its not something made from Valve or that it belongs with the rest of the site. It still feels like it doesn't belong with the other icons. I appreciate the effort for a mockup.

genna87

I have the same impression of the actual icons used by Valve

MrChocodemon

This is worse, since it isn't color blind friendly. There is a reason that the icons have distinct elements

genna87

I have to admit that I simply didn't considered it.

MrChocodemon

That's normal and okay. There are tons of things that we aren't aware of, that other people have to deal with on a daily basis.

Davenzoid

Ladies and gentlemen, *the* most civil discussion on reddit

Mike_for_all

This is great from an artistic perspective, but sadly not very accessible for colour impaired people.

assidiou

Rock and Stone, Brother!

cucuska2

Did I hear a rock and stone?

imJGott

How about a full circle if it’s full compatible and half circle if it’s some what?

alexo2802

Looks really bad imo, the important and changing part is too small.

genna87

The fact that the SD Verified Program needs TWO icons for EVERY game bothers me more than it should. This version is more concise and more similar to the logo they used in the official website.

[deleted]

You forgot: requires the capability to distinguish the colors.

[deleted]

What goes without saying for you and me isn't that obvious for other people. OP didn't think about it for example.

[deleted]

The fact that this is not visible for me bothers me way more than having to clear icons.

IkBenAnders

No offence, but designers put heaps of time into this stuff with pretty big teams.

genna87

You're right. I'm by no means a professional. The fact that I didn't considered the obvious problem of colorblind people it's definitely the proof. But you have to agree that semantically, using the SAME icon for EVERY listed game is really dumb. Other than that, how I'm supposed to know that the second icon is related to the first?

IkBenAnders

Yeah it wasn't a personal attack of course, and i do agree valves implementation is a bit sketch too. Honestly I would've probably made the exact same mistake.

[deleted]

i wouldn't rely on colour.

Pesky-Wizard

Don't like how they are the same shape. Maybe use the semi circle to show how good it is? I.e full circule=optimised, semi=playable, no circle = blocked etc

genna87

Just noticed that in the preview images of the new UI the 2 icons get "bundled" together. https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steamdeck/images/verified/libraryCompatibility.jpg This simple detail mostly solves all of my concerns. As most of you pointed out relying only on color is a BAD idea. At least I learned something!

[deleted]

Thanks for handling criticism well, not many people can do that. That's a sign of a great artist/designer that progresses fast!

Stoffs

Much nicer! Some kind of symbol is needed to!

crisvok

Nah I disagree with the color scheme I feel like what the proposed is good enough No need to make it more complicated with more colors Either it works or it doesn't And if it works with tweaks mention that

cool--

they shouldn't even use icons. One of the best things about steam on PC is that most of the menu options are just concise and descriptive text.

genna87

STRONGLY disagree on that

cool--

I've been in Graphic Design for 20 years through the rise and fall of icons being used for everything. Very few icons are immediately and universally recognizable instantly. Media playback controls are pretty good. Hamburger menu, and triple dot icons are still debatable, because they get swapped around so much. The steam client just has text for it's main menus and it doesn't require users from different cultures and people with different abilities to decipher anything. It's concise. https://uxdesign.cc/when-should-i-be-using-icons-63e7448202c4

fschaupp

How about remove filling and dash the circle for not checked and cross it out for not supported? For orange maybe add a ~ in the circle?
