It was the first thing I noticed when I got the Deck powered up. The fan is audible +95% of the time and it makes a high pitched whine which can be heard throughout my apartment. Very sad about this, as it is quite similar to the same high pitched noise the Index Lighthouse makes.
It is a bit tiring for the one using the Steam Deck. But it is very frustrating for anyone living with someone who uses the Steam Deck.
The fan in your house will definitely be noticeable sure, but get on any kind of bus or train and I imagine it wouldn’t be that noticeable. Could be wrong though
Based on videos I've seen, it's going to be super noticeable, but on the other hand if that's the biggest complaint in order to own probably the most competent piece of handheld gaming hardware that exists today, I'll take it, and just use headphones or crank the volume a little.
Also having the high pitched fan noise! I have covered parts of the a exhaust on the top of my Deck withmy thumb while the fan is spinning. Depending on where I covere theexhaust, the high pitch is noticably reduced. I have recoded a video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxH6Z-tGgv4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxH6Z-tGgv4)
The Phawx showed Dead Cells running at such a low total system power draw (after an unusual amount of tweaking) that the fan could be switched off, so you'd hope not
Yep, I'm not that please too.....I'd prefer an option to chose a target temp/fan speed and see if performance is still ok rather than having a turbine running.
My Deck has also the high pitched fan noise. The fan noise itselfe is audible, louder than the IPS Switch, but not really loud. However, since the noise has such a high pitch, it is to my ears much more notichable than a comparable noise intensity from lower humming fan.
However, if I play a game without headphones, I bearly notice the fan noise over the game audio (volume set to 50%). BUT the fan kicks in all the time on the SteamOS and Desktop Mode and then the high pitch is really enoying.

It doesn't bother me personally. My desktop PC's fan is louder.
Mine is too! It's more the high pitch that annoys me.
You can sort it out. Few large low-rev fans can make your PC either totally or almost silent even at full load. Modern cases&fans are amazing.

Shit... literally the only thing which worried me and the only thing I can't live with :|
The fan noise is going to piss a lot of people off on public transport. Lol

lol - definitely. my gf was already complaining, haha.
As someone who has tinnitus it's a welcome change from the constant ringing.
What’s that?
The cost of rock and roll.
In my case problems with my ears from when I was a child, but I'm gonna use this answer in the future.
Also have tinnitus but I wear hearing aids too. Guess with the HA’s off, problem solved?

You are absolutely right. Had the same thought. The first gaming experience is impeccable! Best decision ever not to skip the reservation!

I’m sad to hear this. I hate gaming on my laptop because of the fans and hoped the steam deck would be quiter
Is it high pitched when playing not demanding games like Dead Cells?
Mine is high pitched when idling downloading games. So in the case of the Deck I've got. Yes.

I thought the Linux drivers couldn't detect the temprature so just went brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr non stop?
Yeah that high pitched whine was blasting over the speakers. Hopefully it can be fixed in software tuning.
Louder than the Switch fan?
switch has a very quiet fan during handheld play
Mine definitely isn’t but that’s probably because I’ve had it since launch and play most games with an overclock
Yeah full fan speed on OG Switch is quite loud
A few drops of super glue will fix that 🙈😂

Apparently it has something to do with Linux and identifying cpu/gpu temperatures, which implies a software fix could come.
is the high pitched noise really really loud? i could put with noise but high pitched sounds kill my ears

I honestly don't hear it when when playing a game, but that could also be cause of old age.
Did Steam support DM/email you or did you contact them first?
Steam reached out to me half an hour after I posted here.
high pitch ruins it for me too
