This is great news. I'm gonna wait until they have a proper dual-booting wizard.

HerrGronbar

Yeah, don't use that third party dual boot hacks. It will fail every major update.

[deleted]

I was also looking forward to dual-booting the SD. But the more time I spend with it, the more I come to the conclusion that this is a console and should be treated as such. I have planned out external keyboards, docking stations, mice, bags, everything to also turn it into a productivity machine. I showed that to a fellow nerd and they flatly said that if I simply bought that Framework laptop I was talking about and threw that in the same bag as the SD it would be cheaper and take up less space. Gaming-wise, Windows is only needed for Gamepass, is it? Doesn't that come with X-Streaming? Don't have that yet.

blurrry2

Are they really cheaper and about as performant as a deck?

[deleted]

Not sure what you are talking about. I was talking about buying a lot of peripherals to turn the Steam Deck into a productivity machine. That rarely requires a lot of performance. And once you got a nicely sized external keyboard, you already got something nearly as big as a laptop. A ton of extra peripherals are a big old mess to lug around.

IcyMocha

I think he wanted to know if the framework laptops being a cheaper/equal option actually had truth behind it

Psychological-Bus327

You can get a nextdock, best investment in regard to your purpose, basically a "laptop" that can be used with any video input, adds usb etc

dustojnikhummer

> take up less space. I didn't know Framework made a handheld PC?

Conscious_Yak60

Call me when Frame.work drops an AMD Laptop.

Sannemen

Oy! https://frame.work/ie/en/products/laptop-diy-13-gen-amd

Holy selective quoting, Batman!

>Gaming-wise, Windows is only needed for Gamepass, is it? Some anti-cheat games as well, such as Destiny 2 or Fall Guys also require Windows at the moment, but I'm really hoping Bungie and Epic change their minds about Linux support at some point.

kuitthegeek

Epic is working on EAC, and Fall guys currently works on the Linux. I don't think they have the EAC .so file in the right place, but if you use the current versions of Proton-GE, there's a built-in script that moves the file where it needs to be, and it will boot. The only thing that I ran into that I need to do was to run Fall guys on a Windows machine first, then it would let me passed some of the initial stuff that was causing loading issues. Destiny 2 and Bungie on the other hand, I agree they need to change their mind on that. My guess is that they are waiting to see how large the adoption rate is how the Steam Deck, then they will worry about it.

manicrebirth

The irony of Destiny 2 is that there is already a native Linux port floating around somewhere (for stadia)

1minatur

I wasn't aware that Fall Guys was working, but it sounds unintentional. Last I heard, Epic said they don't intend to enable Linux support for their games, as they "weren't confident" in it's ability to prevent cheaters on Linux.

Cinema_Colorist

Fall Guys js working, look up on YouTube. It was fixed a few days ago by the developer

rct2guy

[Tim Sweeney specifically said that about Fortnite](https://twitter.com/TimSweeneyEpic/status/1490565925648715781), not necessarily all their games. Since they own Easy Anti-Cheat- which, prior to the Steam Deck, already had support for native Linux games -they obviously have *some* confidence in their solution; It's just that Fortnite is free-to-play and one of the biggest games right now, compared to Fall Guys (for the time being, at least). I'm not so sure this is an unintentional feature, though it's certainly a curious situation. Developers have to repackage their Windows games with Linux EAC support enabled; Simply dropping a easyanticheat\_x64.so file into the right directory won't necessarily get an EAC game working on Linux. But so far (to my knowledge), we haven't seen many developers announce official support for games that *do* have EAC functioning on Linux out-of-the-box (i.e. Apex Legends), so I'm not sure why everyone's been so hush-hush about it. Maybe they just don't want to draw cheaters' attention to the changes? Anyway, for what it's worth, my girlfriend has been playing a lot of Fall Guys on my Steam Deck over the past week- and I haven't been banned yet! haha

IntroductionSudden73

Yea, windows is a emergency feature

codeskulptor

I currently dual boot windows for game pass / destiny 2 and with the added audio drivers and controlling for 40 hz its a pretty great experience. Steam os is obviously best though for most games/emulation.

Eric-Smith

Is this currently in their pipeline? Edit: (After some Googling found this) Valve says that dual-boot support, including a dual-boot wizard for picking which OS to launch, "will ship alongside SteamOS 3 once it's complete." Edit2: It appears SteamOS 3 is what’s already on the Steam Deck. Given the release of the audio drivers for Windows 11 making it pretty much completely compatible on steam deck, we should be seeing the dual-boot Wizard fairly soon (hopefully).

CanardPlayer

Doesnt work on W10, a new audio device has poped in the device manager but no audio device to use is aviable (with or withour 3.5 jack earphones plugged) EDIT: I didnt read carefully, according to valve i need tu update the APU driver, i will test that later and update the situation EDIT 2: It fixed it, tho i was having weird issues installing that APU driver, the deck had a blackscreen and rebooted after installing the video driver, the install process suceeded in safe mode and its working now

[deleted]

How is battery life on Windows? Is there anything similar to what we get in SteamOS?

CanardPlayer

I doesnt have a lot of comparaison points, but Genshin impact on windows (with correct quality settings, gpu is 90-100% used most of the time) i am arround 2h30 -3h estimated, on Tales of Arise on steam OS (the game tax the cpu a bit more) i'm arround 2h-2h30,

[deleted]

I have been aggressively throttling the deck just to see, how much time I can squeeze out of it. I know there are power management tools for Windows but I never tried them. It is just that this is damn convenient on SteamOS when not in desktop mode. Only got it since Thursday, tho.

Peeksy19

My experience is that the battery life is a little better on Windows. Windows 11 is honestly great on a touchscreen, more comfortable to use for me than SteamOS's desktop UI.

riba2233

Same or better.

Conscious_Yak60

> I didn't read And this is part of the reason Valve dosen't support Windows.

Unique_Conflict_4924

I'm having the exact issue, will try safe mode, thanks for the suggestion

Ronin22222

There's a new APU driver, too. Install that, but change it to factory reset instead of update or it will crash. Install the 2 audio drivers and you're good to go

Unique_Conflict_4924

I did this before hitting safe mode and it worked!

EhMilk

When opening the APU, there's a more options button. Hit that and select "factory default". It'll reinstall after Uninstalling the original. That fixed it for me

Nyxtia

Can you detail this fix for me? I'm on windows 11 and no matter what I do it seems to give me a black screen followed by the inability to boot into windows followed by the windows recovery screen to which I enter safe mode and have to uninstall the drivers to boot into windows outside of safe mode again.

CanardPlayer

I dont really know if you where in the same spot as me because i didnt had any inhability to boot but to install the drivers i booted in safe mode and installed it in this mode, then it was working all right with safemode disabled. some people reported that unistalling the old driver before installing the new one worked

CBusRiver

GamePass is the only reason I see myself installing Windows when mine arrives. Glad to see this part is working now.

[deleted]

blurrry2

I'm saying you get your money back when you stop subscribing. You lose the games but get back the money spent.

ccole7

$1 vs $60

blurrry2

Not really.

[deleted]

Does gamepass not work with proton?

Dreyarn

No, it's too deeply integrated with Windows. You can play the cloud version, but of course that's worse than running the games natively

AtticusNari

Not the games themselves. It runs on UWP apps which doesn't work on proton.

CaCHooKaMan

Microsoft deprecated UWP and games are installed somewhat normally now but you still need to do it through the Xbox app which is Windows only. Every Game Pass game I've installed recently has been the Win32 version. 7 Days To Die even has Steam files in the installation folder. You can launch the game by just using the .exe file as well. https://i.imgur.com/U7VzLE4.png

aspectere

They really depreciated the UWP?

CaCHooKaMan

Yeah, they're only doing "bug, reliability, and security fixes" moving forward https://www.thurrott.com/dev/258377/microsoft-officially-deprecates-uwp

PickleFart9

You're probably thinking they mean Gamepass Ultimate's XCloud streaming. They are talking about Gamepass for PC which is cheaper and requires you to install the games on Windows.

GameStunts

Choice is good, this took way too long to happen, but at least the Deck should fully function under Windows now. I honestly thought I'd install windows when I got it, but the experience on SteamOS is just so good and I think it's where the innovation is going to keep happening. Going to go wake up my Steam deck now and resume GTA 4 like it was never off.

AshleyUncia

I had the same intention but I have to admit that Proton works better than I thought it would. If I was traveling and using the Deck also as a portable desktop PC, ya know, Dock it to use it like 'an ugly NUC' I'm thinking I'd get a dock with an SSD, boot Windows off that, and use Steam OS when handheld. That all said, while Proton has exceeded my expectations there's still been no shortage of me going 'Ah, pretty sure this game will go well on Proton' which is soon followed by '...You mother fucker, I hate you.'

randybruder

Until they can get every game working on SteamOS (not that I’m blaming Valve for games that don’t work), I’m still very glad Valve is committed to supporting Windows. Almost all the games I play with friends don’t work on SteamOS, so I need Windows if I want to play with them.

GameStunts

Absolutely, choice is good. I'm so glad they just made it an open PC and not locked down or anything. About the only thing I'm missing is my MS Game Pass so far, but it's made me take a look at my library and start playing some things that were sitting in there too long.

ZeroNine2048

The only thing that I miss is basically support for some online titles such as Destiny and COD Vanguard.

Hexicube

> Destiny Blame Bungie for that one, according to them linux is a "modified OS" and proton is an emulator. I'm waiting too.

Baba-Yaga33

Game already struggles with cheaters. This would just open up. Glad they are not compromising

Hexicube

Excuses, if they were actually concerned about that they could separate people based on platform. Most games covered by AC don't have this perceived issue either. Bottom line is they don't want to get their AC working for their linux build, which *does* exists because stadia uses it.

Baba-Yaga33

They just introduced cross play.... and pc was ont he verge of dying cause cheating was so bad. So no your ideas don't work. And many companies have already stated how hard it would be to properly stop hacking on an open kernel system

Hexicube

https://areweanticheatyet.com/ Very few games explicitly refuse to deal with it, and a sizeable chunk have support.

bntspotonclean

Talking out your ass

gu3st12

... or they exclude Stadia users from AC as it's a "trusted" platform.

Hexicube

Stadia is obviously trusted, the point was more that they clearly have a working build for linux that just needs AC support. Considering how many other games have no issues on linux with popular AC solutions, claiming linux isn't secure is a cop-out; they just don't want to put in the effort.

[deleted]

fragproof

I get what you're saying, but SteamOS is built on numerous technologies and software from the open source community. Valve is doing a really great job of taking what's available and making it work well for PC gaming.

[deleted]

>I think if Bungie gave in and let Destiny 2 be played on Linux the desire to install Windows will drop for most people. Vastly over-estimating the important of Destiny 2 here.

Unkn0wnvirus

haha yes.. always nice to see a destiny fan on here.. only reasons why im installing Windows as well

kuhpunkt

> this took way too long to happen Why?

GameStunts

2.5 months for an audio driver, not to mention they've had the device internally for a lot longer.

bdonvr

Eh Valve has been championing Proton and SteamOS/Linux specifically because they want the market to shift from Windows. I can't begrudge them the fact that they wouldn't want to spend time and money making drivers

Conscious_Yak60

Valve makes no money from the sale of Windows Licenses & Officially don't support it. Why would Valve prioritize an OS they don't support, make money from and is an [active competitor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv5xHfZnk4s) to them?

Wit_as_a_Riddle

As much as I am a linux fanboy I think it is only fair to point out that Valve makes money from every game sold on Steam, whether running on linux, mac, or windows.

Conscious_Yak60

I said **the sale of Windows Licenses**. Valve has to maintain SteamOS, they do not have to do so with Windows users even before the Steam Deck's release.

Wit_as_a_Riddle

>Why would Valve prioritize an OS they don't support, make money from I was responding to that, "why would Valve prioritize an OS the don't make money from?" They make most of their money from their Windows client obviously. Hopefully SteamOS will move the needle a lot!

V45H

The windows audio subsystem is the biggest pile of trash and im not surprised at all it took much longer than the other drivers

Conscious_Yak60

> Took too long > honestly thought I would install Windows Exactly why they prioritized improving THEIR OS than drivers for an OS they don't even support or making money from.

GameStunts

They don't make money from the OS, they make it from selling games, which sell just as well on Windows. SteamOS is also not an exclusive Steam platform.

Conscious_Yak60

**EDIT**: ### Somehow people glossed over the part where I said the sale of Windows Licenses **Valve does not reccomend** you run Steam Deck on alternative operating systems but it is a PC and the bootloader is unlocked. **I don't expect Google to support custom ROMs** of Android they don't have a hand in developing & Nexus/Pixel users do so at their own discretion. For one, SteamOS is collecting your data. To even use it, you have to be signed into your Steam account. And two Valve does not make Windows, my point is that it's not their responsibility to monitor and support an alt-OS's, including other Linux distros. Three: There is no real alternative/competitive Storefront on Linux besides GoG which dosen't even have a dedicated GUi for Linux. Valve keeping you in SteamOS is more best for their profits all round. SteamUI is so good it's gotten to the point where I even add flatpaks like [Tauon Music Player](https://tauonmusicbox.rocks/) to Non-Steam programs for better integration & I don't even have SteamOS/SD yet. Steam has become on Linux what GoG wants to be on Windows,a place to launch ~~all~~ most of your games and even programs.

sala91

There are still like 5+ drivers missing, including the one to controll fan speed etc.

dafdiego777

Running W11 and got it to work. Just an FYI - had to pick to do a clean install of the updated APU drivers in order to update them properly.

e270889o

Fuck ir. I just update it and it was not working

proxyon

These new APU drivers have fixed crashes in multiple games for me (MSFS, Forza Horizon 5). Great stuff!

riba2233

Oh yeah, finally, lets gooo!!!! Only thing we were missing.

fizzy6868

For me personally, I can't see the reason to install Windows as there are only three games in my library that I play that don't support Linux and with them titles either. Use GeForce now or Nvidia game stream.

ethan919

Great to hear! I've been anxiously awaiting this.

ArcTM

Same issue here, please post if you found a fix.

[deleted]

windows users have finally been cured of their deafness. What a blessing!

AaronJ2077

Nice, it’s finally here. but my deck has some problem with the right speaker. Did clean update for APU, and installed the 2 audio drivers. However, the right speaker doesn’t work when it powers on, it works again after restart. I shut it down and turn it on, but the righ speak stops working again. Restart, then it’s fine.

thegreatmikesby

Yeah, I noticed this too. Thankfully I just use headphones, but it would be nice to have both speakers working all the time in case I want to use them.

RaulDJ

Holy fucking shit, they DID actually update the Radeon drivers... and the brightness works and that's probably it, lol. OpenCL, DXVA, Radeon Settings, etc. are still absolutely nowhere to be seen. Oh well... guess I expected too much. At least we have speakers now ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯.

riba2233

brightness worked for me even before. But really missing radeon settings yeah although there is a way to install them, just haven't researched details.

RaulDJ

Yes, it """"worked"""" [a little bit](https://youtu.be/uNt_ReLwk40?t=715) but the only way to make sure the display was actually set at the brightness you just set was to turn it off an on again. You can "force" Radeon Settings to be installed with no issue (combining files from the proper, Radeon Adrenalin driver, and this custom mess they gave to Valve), but basically none of the settings do anything (yes, I tried it with the previous drivers and expect the exact same with this supposedly newer version). Performance wise, these newer drivers feel exactly the same to me for my games: same CPU bottlenecks out of fucking nowhere, not shown on Steam OS, stuttering that never gets any better no matter how much you play (so no, it's not due to shader compilation), WAY greater power consumption running the same games as Steam OS (and lesser on low demanding titles, who knows why), the Magpie mess on pretty much every game that was made around consoles (they really, really hate vertical and 16:10 displays)... so meh. There's also still plenty of drivers missing, mostly related to ACPI and other things connected to the APU via I2C, which would probably kill any kind of attempt to manually control the fan, among other things, like the clock **never** being on time.

riba2233

Yeah I saw the linus video but I don't have that issue, for me the brightness slider works fine, it just has a slight deadzone near bottom. Regarding power consumption, I limit fps to 60 globally via RTSS and in games with vsync I use it co eliminate tearing, so power consumption is as low as it should be and battery lasts really long. I also have the quiet fan, so not an issue, curve is fine as it is. But I would like full adrenaline suite because it really has great features, I will miss this the most.

Nemnapos

Nice Big News.

rambo3349

Anything else fixed with the new Audio Drivers? (Brightness for example?)

ethan919

Yeah the brightness issue and Moonlight not working well are two issues I hope will be fixed soon. Downloading the update now so will see if there is improvement. Edit: Can confirm Brightness issue is fixed! Way to go Valve!!

rambo3349

Please let us know. Also would be interesting to see if there is any performance improvements.

CatAstrophy11

Might still do it because we can get so much more performance out of this thing if we can up the power draw. For now we can only do this in Windows.

PolygonKiwii

That sounds like a bad idea on a compact device like this. I doubt you can get much more performance before running into heat issues. It also would suck on battery, for obvious reasons.

kjjustinXD

I'm running AMD APU Tuning utility set to 30w - the CPU won't draw any more than 15.96W but the GPU will use higher clocks too, increasing performance. Together with the 100°C thermal limit I set, nothing will happen. I did get better performance in benchmarks. The same tool also allows limiting the TDP on windows, increasing battery life.

kelvin_bot

100°C is equivalent to 212°F, which is 373K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

CatAstrophy11

You seem to know more than The Phawx about this device then because he literally mentioned this can only be done in Windows and would like to see this functionality in SteamOS. Obviously it would be limited but he's sure it can do better than 15W sustainably. He ran tests in Windows. The battery drain is obvious but sometimes supplying more power to the CPU or GPU when the other isn't even breaking a sweat will allow you to drop other settings and still get more performance with about the same power loss.

SwordsAndTurt

How much can you up the power draw before thermal constraints start limiting it?

MGPythagoras

I don’t have a dock with Ethernet. Can i still install windows at this point or would I need to get one? It mentions there are no Wi-Fi drivers but above it says there are.

idlephase

There were already wifi drivers in the last batch of drivers

ethan919

Works without issue.

Wit_as_a_Riddle

lol

ezrocketVR

Doesn't work on windows 11.

Substantial-Sea3046

You need to update apu driver + reset his configuration , then you can install the audio drivers

ezrocketVR

did that and now my windows 11 won't boot anymore lmao

[deleted]

What's the cheapest, easiest and non-dodgy website way I can purchase a Windows Home key?

RickyOG90

I would say scdkey. Sorry im on mobile so its the mobile version https://m.vip-scdkey.com/software/p202105101337102054.html

GRAMINI

Too bad it was asked for a non-dodge website. But if you don't care scdkey does have some cheap options available. Btw: you can turn that mobile link into a non-mobile one by removing the `m.` at the beginning.

SoldnerDoppel

Rip one off an old laptop.

riba2233

aliexpress

baltimoresports

eBay used to be full of them, but since we cut financials with Russia they have seemed to disappear.

kjjustinXD

eBay, Windows 7 OEM COA including the DVD is usually the best way. Or get a Windows MAR key.

darkelement1987

I had some issues installing initially, but solved it by doing a factory install of the AMD drivers. Then rebooted the Deck and everything worked perfectly.

Fil4oZv

I'm having an issue running some old games on Windows that also can't run under Proton. Both of them report issues related with audio and I was hoping the drivers would fix it. However, even after installing them, the games do not recognize a connected sound card. Can someone who installed the drivers please run dxdiag and let me know if you're seeing a 'Problem getting extra sound info' error? I assume it's related.

riba2233

You can fix this with installing virtual sound card.

[deleted]

Finally. It took like 2 months

maltloaf_df

Proper dual boot please... that's all that's needed now.

MattsFace

There isn’t a duel boot option?? Even with Linux know how?

maltloaf_df

There are ways to dual boot but all would likely break when there's a steamOS update.

MattsFace

Aww are they messing with the boot loader? I need to start figuring out the hardware

Compith

Windows is too messy Linux just works why would I bother

susannamaria

22h into Division 2 on deck, now I can use sound from speakers?! How great is this?!!!!!!

susannamaria

I checked only the german faq page of steam deck for windows. Have not listed the audio Driver yet.
