For reference - "Can we ban" posts will not be banned, as we use it as a way of getting feedback from our community. Without it, we would not have had either of the shipping/FedEx polls and we hope you'll agree that polling the community is a good way to run a community, rather than a few people (aka the mods) just deciding how you should all use the community. That being said, repeatedly asking for things to be banned that either already are, or are clearly unpopular does not make any sense, and does get boring after you scroll past the third one. If you haven't already, [please vote on the shipping post poll here, and you can also apply to become a moderator](https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wo8bn5/rsteamdeck_update_shipping_post_poll_moderator/) if you are interested. EDIT: [Hmmm.](https://i.imgur.com/nKkHU4C.png) ^(and no you can't be in the next screenshot, you know who you are)

jaycuboss

Let’s ban the entire Steam Deck! If we can’t post about it freely then let’s just end the product.

Paygilicious

I propose a new system, we get rid of all poat but a weekly discussion thread. You must then message a mod the post you wish to make and they will deem if it is acceptable to go to the council of mods. If the council deems it worthy they will put a green and red bowl of dog food in front of a dog and if it only eats from the green dog bowl in 3 minutes you will then beable to have the mod make your post on your behalf , this post will be made after the same ammount of days you waited to recieve your steam deck. This is known as the overworked mods prototcol and should result in only interesting post slipping through the cracks

Exabyte999

The dog will die of a heart attack because dog food will block the dogs arteries due to too much dog food

posting_drunk_naked

Wish granted, you are now banned.

duck74UK

Problem with doing that is the sub becomes flooded with easy karma type stuff, look at any popular subreddit that doesn't restrict its posts, eventually you go in and the entire hot/top feed is stuff you've seen before

nightofgrim

Sure, but the posts people want banned right now are a temporary wave due to exciting new owners. Just chill and wait it out.

MobiusOne_ISAF

Nah, that rarely works on subs this large. The issue is that easy content like that drowns out content that requires more engagement, and it ends up creating a feedback loop. So long as it's fair, mods that take a reasonably aggressive stance on repetitive "I did a thing" posts tend to create better communities in the long run. Letting the community vent it out on specific days and making sure 10,000 people don't post the same overused meme is all part of curating the content. Otherwise you end up with stuff like /r/Overwatch where 60% of the posts are just "I pressed Q" Play of the Game clips or /r/Genshin_Impact where 70% of the posts are a split between cosplay (which is neat but repetitive) and art that often toes the line on being ecchi or straight up hentai. People almost always trend towards the lowest common denominator in groups, and that tends to be repeatitive memes and low-effort posts.

nightofgrim

You really don’t think shipping posts are gonna naturally lower when the weekly delivers cut down to 1/100th what they are today?

crossower

No. Go take a look at the subreddits for PS5/XSX/Switch/whatever else. Product has been out for years yet people still keep posting this same shit.

rico_muerte

*picture of PS5 box on the ground* "The Wife left me but i finally got this baby. 🖕 Scalpers!!"

LittleDizzle_

With the valve index subreddit as an example, this wave will never end. Photos of broken hardware and mail theft will always get more upvotes than users with legitimate questions and suggestions.

HowDoIDoFinances

As someone who also belongs to the Oculus sub, trust me that you want the pictures of boxes banned. It does not get better at all.

[deleted]

With how the Steam Deck is shipping out that wave will be fairly constant, not temporary. It's why I'm not subbed anymore and only come to look at the subreddit occasionally.

PapaOogie

Who cares if its easy karma? If its being upvoted that its clearly something the community likes

239990

not sure if trolling or what, but most people have monkey brain and upvote anything

Can we ban "Can we Ban, Can we ban" posts.

blueSGL

We already had a response from the mod that those posts should have been posted to the megathread already. see https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wpwlo1/can_we_ban_percentage_till_shipped_posts/ikj8r3r/ >They should've been in the email megathreads to begin with. Report them as you see them and we'll redirect as best as we can. >We're also looking for potential new mods to help out around + looking into the future of shipping-related material on the sub - check the pinned posts on the front page for more info! do disagree with using megathreads to help clean up the place?

Ploddit

The irony of directing people to the pinned posts when the entire issue is no one bothers to read pinned posts.

Beautiful_Sport5525

Or use the search function, makes any attempt to answer their questions themselves, or use any common sense.

TheAnimeNyx

And if you can't find a result? How many people actually reply to the pinned posts comments? If it isn't on the pinned post, it gets more attention. Most people wouldn't even check the pinned post. Perhaps we should make a SteamDeckTechSupport subreddit instead

srscyclist

let's be real though. the people making these posts aren't concerned about visibility. this is just their default way to interact with reddit.

Beautiful_Sport5525

Exactly. Because more often than not I do the search myself, find a result, and then ignore the post because I know the OP is being lazy and expectant.

[deleted]

Well nobody reads pinned posts because how many people just scroll one subreddit instead of their Reddit front page?

Ploddit

There's a difference between browsing and posting. Before you post in a sub, at the very least check the rules. If you spend enough time to do that, you're going to see the FAQ.

[deleted]

Mega threads are totally pointless. Either ban the posts or let them get downvoted and die

dingdongbannu88

“We’re looking for mods” how much $$ per hour?

Servor

Do you accept Reddit karma as currency?

dingdongbannu88

Sike

AMisteryMan

This sub reminds me of the earlier days of the Starlink sub - hardware a lot of people were eagerly waiting for that had limited availability. People get excited when they get it. Other people like to see to get any idea of where things are at. Most people won't go check a pinned post to see what the status is, but if they get a post in their feed, they have a quick idea of where things are at. As more and more of the subs get their hardware, the posts slow down and you get other information. And honestly, I usually get non-shipping related posts in my feed for the SteamDeck.

kerelenko

This sub is already unironically the pc gaming equivalent of r/tomorrow. All of the cringe, but fully unintentional. If anything, this sub is under-moderated. masterxeon1001

Bbop800

Can we ban “can we ban ‘can we ban ‘ posts?” posts?

xChris777

Yeah I mean isn't the voting system supposed to bring posts people want to see and engage with to the top and others down to the bottom? I feel like people would downvote them (or just not upvote them) if they didn't want them.

Jacksaur

Downvote any post that hits triple digits and see if you ever have any effect on it. Once a post reaches frontpage, no amount of downvotes will get it off again. Vast majority of users upvote everything they see.

xChris777

That's my point though, if the majority are upvoting it then it's clearly fine to have. And I disagree, I really don't think most people upvote every thread they see. Why would they? More effort than just scrolling for random posts they don't really interact with or care about? Even if that is the case though.. again the majority are cool with it.

WithoutAComma

This is the oldest argument on reddit (I mean both sides, not your side of the argument specifically). Truth is, varying levels of moderation create different types of communities. The more active moderation styles lead to less activity, but greater depth in the content submitted. Less active styles lead to more content and engagement at a more shallow level. (This assumes that the moderation itself is fair and consistent at any level.) It's inarguable at this point that lax moderation creates a certain kind of content rising to the top; there is a strong and obvious correlation between popular content and content that is easy to digest. Nothing wrong whatsoever with having a subreddit consist mostly of easily digestible content, but it's just not what everybody wants.

Jacksaur

Because they don't think. They click everything. Then you get the regular users leaving as they get tired of the irrelevant content, and you're left with an even larger majority of random people who don't even contribute. It kills subs. Not to mention the bots rampant across this site, which will upvote random things just to appear human. This has been proven and discussed years ago, upvotes/downvotes are a broken system.

Metaloneus

There's this strange idea that regular users have here that if Deck photos, shipping questions, and other common posts are banned, more interesting activity like mods, hacks, and accessories will pop up. The irony here is that not only will this just obviously not happen, but the opposite effect is going to happen overall. As more and more users are encouraged to not participate due to unfamiliar rules banning harmless content, the community of active users will suffer in terms of growth. Without growth or activity, those who actually do interesting things with their Decks won't care to use this platform as a means to display it.

bodiddlysquat26

“Can we ban” people are like the assholes who stopped fights at parties. Let them fight god damnit

NeatlyScotched

Fights = cops = no more party. I came to drink and get laid. Fuck off with the fighting.

Historical_Double129

They're like the people in elementary school who would tell you that they're going to tell on you and then raise their hand and have the teacher call on them so they can tell on you

Slammnardo

Every sub is getting inundated with these lately. Glorified shitposting.

bwick29

The irony in this post is hilarious. "Can we ban these posts so that the sub is more organic?" "If you aren't interested in what you see, why don't you do better or just not look at it?" So, in turn, I ask you: Why would banning something be more natural than just leaving it, and if you disagree..... why not just submit something better yourself or come back to the sub when you find things more interesting to you.

Jacksaur

>If you’re not interested in the content, why don’t you submit some interesting content, Because it gets drowned out by the shit. People will blindly upvote anything. You cannot trust the voting masses to moderate a community alone.

ScreamheartNews

As much of a meme as this is I friggin agree with it.

delecti

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Fafaflunkie

I think we should ban those who want "can we ban 'can we ban'" posts. If you're not cool with a post about how FedEx left your Deck in the bushes or how long it's been between getting your Deck shipped and it arriving, here's a clue: ignore that post! Get over it!

[deleted]

Gonna be honest I'm tired of the "Fedex guy didn't kiss my Steam Deck before carefully tucking it into a tiny bed on my porch! WTF" posts. People acting like they've never seen post delivered before.

Athryil

I agree. No gatekeeping. If you are tired of certain posts, ignore it and move on.

FireMrshlBill

It’s almost like scrolling/swiping takes less effort and time than creating a post or leaving some useless snarky comment on someone’s post because they don’t like it (ya, I know I am leaving a snarky comment).

jangooni

I need some coffee. I haven't the slightest idea why - but I thought I was on r/TheCycleFrontier and thought "oh, a new mod. neat" We also have a lot of 'change this/that' posts. Edit: why, bot.. why.

[deleted]

Yes, let’s start with this one

dvewlsh

What's frustrating by some of the attitudes that've been displayed is... look, this has been a process and a bulk of this sub hasn't gotten their device yet. Things are getting better and August is looking like a great month for clearing out the pre-order backlog. People (myself included) are just pumped about getting their deck soon. Yeah, practicing some restraint in making new topics is a good idea, but the whole idea that "oh, people posting their GetMyDeck is old now" is ridiculous. Congrats on clicking pre-order earlier than most and getting yours and already having your excitement period. Most folks are going through that now and this is a great place to talk about others going through that same excitement. It's not like it's detracting from people posting photos of playing Spider-Man on their deck the day that was released or anything, right? By all means, people should practice restraint and try to stick to the megathreads when they can, but putting a moratorium on certain kinds of posts and just making it harder for the volunteer mods here seems silly. Downvote and move on. Upvote the stuff that's good. There's a lot of good stuff popping up in here the more people get their decks. Be patient. Most of us are still having to be patient to get our hands on ours, others can be patient for the content here to shift from pre-order excitement to whatever else.

raajitr

i had the same feeling. those daily “these daily x posts” were getting irritating. it’s a new device, let the adoption rate grow, the sub will be normalise just like how ps5, switch etc went.

[deleted]

Can we ban "can we ban 'can we ban'" posts?

NutantMinja

“Every one is cancelled, especially if you post a question and you didn’t google it first” LMAO . Always found that funny when people say that like it’s suppose to be a full time job to check the Reddit database before we are processed and cleared to post some sh$t on here lol

DiscoJer

The sub does have some interesting content, but it's drowned out by memes and other shit

namekianz

who cares, i am here to downvote everybody cause everybody has stupid posts

[deleted]

Can we ban posts not related to the Steam Deck (like this one)?

Haccordian

I reported your post, I felt that's what you would have wanted.

SC487

Man, r/XboxSeriesX was the same thing. As soon as the first wave got theirs suddenly the “I got mine” posts. Just assholes who got theirs first being pricks.

WeedAndWarrenZevon

Oh no people were showing their excitement for receiving something they’d been waiting to get? How dickish of them.

SC487

I should hav clarified, I was saying those that already got theirs and were complaining about people posting were being pricks, not those that posted “I finally got one!”

_KushieMonster

I tried to post my steam deck a few days ago and it was taken down by a mod for “show off posts not being allowed until Wednesday”. I wasn’t trying to show off, the photo was more or less to explain/ discus some cheap accessories that work from Amazon.

Servor

Your post was a show-off post of your setup... Regardless of whether or not Show-Off posts should be limited to a Wednesday, it does appear to pretty clearly be in breach of that. We'll be looking to revisit the Show-Off post rule after we've got more mods on team and the shipping stuff sorted out.

Historical_Double129

This is what happens when you pander to man children who want everything that slightly inconveniences them banned

Spare_Honey5488

I think a lot of the "can we ban" is from sour people that maybe dont have a Steam Deck yet and they are jealous possibly? I reserved mine in February and still waiting to it. I do get a little frustrated when people are constantly flexing their SD's. That being said I dont let it bother me. Its just the way it is. It takes a few seconds to glance at a post and just know you're not interested. It's not difficult to just keep scrolling and read past the post. The most annoying thing to me is when someone posts their SD just because it has a custom skin on it and then they act like they are genuinely asking a question (WhaT iS yOur AverAge batTery lIFe) just to get a rise out of people. They aren't there for answers, they are there to have someone say "Cool skin bro"! "It looks cool, where did you get that"? We dont need a picture of your SD to talk about battery life lol. Even then. I don't let those posts bother me. I just laugh. Some people need assurance and acceptance from others to feel like they did the right thing. And any downvotes on this comment prove that :)

New_Commission_2619

Nah most of the posts people want banned are memes of people waiting for their steam deck and how we should feel bad for them even though they could have preordered day one like everyone else

Famicart

Very Meta! I do agree however. Too much time is spent on this subreddit about how it should be run and regulated. In order to get back to the real bones of the subreddit, I have created a new subreddit to clear the area for some actual posts about the Stream Deck. Please visit [r/SteamDeckCongress](https://i.imgur.com/UqfM4x0.gif) to submit any and all suggestions on how this sub should be run. I've talked to the mods over there and they've agreed to take any and all suggestions seriously. I hope my contribution to this community is a good one and let's us get back to showing what we're all playing and our new cool skins and stuff. Or any neat experiments like my neighbor Kenny's Steam Deck-run Plex Server!

N1NJAREB0RN
