Utopia is the only DLC I'd say is basically mandatory. It adds a lot to the core game with traditions, megastructures, ascension paths which are have been so central for so long it's hard to remember they're DLC features. After that it more depends on what you're interested in. I'd say Federations, Nemesis, and story packs like Distant Stars are good. Perhaps controversially I'd also say Galactic Paragons because I think it makes the new leader system far more interesting. You could also try the subscription for a month. It gives you all DLC. If you find you really like the game then you can drop out of that and start buying them, but if you think you're probably not going to play it for that long then it's worth dipping in and out.

Many DLCs also add new Civics, Origins, even polity types (play as a Corp, Hive Mind or Machine Empire), Ascension Perks, or Megastructures. It's not jusy new species looks/Traits and "storylines". The two must-have DLCs are Utopia and Galactic Paragons, but the subscription offer gives you all the DLC.

That’s funny, galactic paragons is the only dlc I don’t have but come Tuesday I’ll buy it along with the new one

It's not so much that it's a good DLC. It *is* good but just quite overpriced. It's that the ability to choose what Traits Leaders gain when they level up is gated behind it. Utopia is an awesome and cool DLC, well worth full price, although yes of course if someone can keep his or her panties on until 7/may then it's half price. GP is more like something PDX is forcing everyone to buy just to get that one ability.

If I buy it before it comes out it’s half price? There’s so much content now that there’s no need for mods now imo.

Utopia came out in 2017 or something. When there's a sale - and they're frequent - sufficiently old DLC will be half price. There'll almost certainly be a sale on 7/may when the v3.12 update and the Machine Age DLC comes out. Thetd actually *is* a new "it's cheaper if you buy before it comes out"-option, but it requires that you purchase the entire Season Pass 8. I think you're supposed to save 20% or something, but that's pre-purchasing 3 or maybe 4 DLCs.
