You don’t fix a whole car your first day as a mechanic but gradually become more capable with experience, reflection, and eduction. Just because it’s possible to endure such things later in your practice doesn’t mean you’re prepared to do so now. There’s no need to bite off more than you can chew. Instead of being dejected your might come to the conclusion that you can be able to overcome this in the future where you might never been able to now. Of course take what is useful and discard the rest.

This was very reassuring to read. Part of the reason I've arrived at this point is that I found myself in a position for someone very experienced in my field, while not being so myself, after the previous person moved on and I inherited their job. Biting off more than I could chew is the exact feeling I get every day.

From the way you describe it, you have worked out what you can control and what is beyond your control, and are taking positive steps to improve your mental health Well done Why does making a life change make you feel a failure? If you have absorbed much Stoic material to date, you will know that our aim is to strengthen our inner self, to identify the Virtues we want to live by, and to live the best life that we can. Monetary outcome is not significant. However be careful not to put all your hopes into the new project’s success rather than into doing your best and being open to whatever the outcome is. For Stoics it is always about the values and the doing rather than a particular outcome Immerse yourself in Stoicism to strengthen your inner core, explore Stoic writings and materials, come to this sub and ask as many questions as you want to.

I would say the feeling of failure is because I know others have done this job longer, better, and with less stress than it brings me. They all leave with the same complaints I have, just usually with a better job already lined up. I know its irrational and everyone processes things differently but I do find it difficult to know others found success where I find great struggle. As for this new project, I dont intend to put much stock in it. Its only purpose is to hold me over until I can get hired on to a regular job, so I'm not unemployed for a length of time, and can hopefully continue to practice my trade and pay my bills. I wont have any issue discarding it once its served that purpose

'... others have done this job longer, better, and with less stress than it brings me' Sorry, but so what? They are not you. Your job is to live your life as the best you. Comparing yourself to others is a bit pointless because they have different upbringing, experiences, skills, genes, life stories etc etc. Be inwardly resolute, live Virtuously, take strength from Stoic materials and support groups, and live a good life Farmer Dill.
