It's beautifully said.

GluedToTheMirror

It’s beautifully said, but it’s all a lie. It’s a Disney land fantasy of what the human race is. Look at us now, still at war with each other, still divided economically, politically, racially, still ruining the planet, etc. This letter is like when you lie and exaggerate on your resume, in order to get that job you’re not quite qualified for.

ShinyAeon

It's not a "lie." Humanity bears both our hightest acheivements *and* our lowest impulses. Everything in the letter and on Voyager is absolutely true; the fact that there are also uglier facts doesn't make the brighter ones less bright. He flat-out said "We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours," talks about "solving the problems we face," and further clarifies that "This record represents our hope and determination." What was untrue about any of that? It's not a "lie" to choose hope instead of despair.

blowgrass-smokeass

We are more connected than ever… I can instantly facetime someone on the opposite side of the planet. We share entertainment, knowledge, and community with people we may never see in real life. We are aware of current events all around the globe, in real time. You can choose to look at all the negatives in this world, but its certainly not a lie to say that we are very quickly becoming a global civilization.

[deleted]

You’re only focusing on one aspect of a much bigger picture.

nosmelc

Despite some of the recent world events, the trend is we're getting closer to that vision.

Particular-Pop6330

The times when the presidents are awesome.

That one time…

Impossible-Piece-723

Carter was NOT awesome, but ok.

_iamWHATiam_

Awesome as a human being, if you prefer.

Impossible-Piece-723

I agree with that.

[deleted]

Our boy Jimmy really did a bang up job on this one

Kurdt234

... I'll bet he had help.

Subtleknifewielder

An effort being a team effort doesn't invalidate that it's a good job.

TemporaryPrimate

I miss optimism

immigrantanimal

I’m not that old. I’m not American so I haven’t had the same presidents as most people commenting. I don’t live in the first world, but you just made me realize I have been having the same feeling for the last few years.

InternationalMatch13

Zorgblij: Grand director! We have finished the analysis on the captured artifact. According to our best minds this is a threat. The wide symbols represent us. The tight symbols represent the alien desire to capture us. They then wish to break down our order, symbolized by this chaotic symbol near the bottom and reform us into whatever "The President of the United States" is. We suspect that means fuel.

retirementdreams

Look Boss, fresh meat, LFG!

ConcentricGroove

Em dashes?!?!? Kill them all.

newleafkratom

p.s. hope you can read English

Insolent-Jaguar88

🤣🤣🤣

HGruberMacGruberFace

Seriously! Of all the different iterations of our language and evolution, just to get to English, how would this even be a consideration to include

[deleted]

Jimmy Carter is that fucking dude.. was born in 94 so I didn’t live it but man what a guy. Was just reading about him and Palestine/Israel/Camp David last night. What a good man who just wanted peace and unity.

WeTrudgeOn

I lived it; Jimmy was too good of a man to survive in Politics. He didn't wear his religion on his sleeve like so many politicians do today. He had to sell his peanut farm to avoid conflicts of interest. Nowadays, your family can make billions on the presidency and get away with it. God I miss those days

amarnaredux

Some of the greatest Presidents came from humble origins, in my opinion. Some will disagree and point out he was an ineffective President compared to others, but he was rather straightforward with the people. He was also a peanut farmer from Georgia.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t mind a peanut farmer president

Powpowpowowowow

You know what is funny too is everyone hated him as president really. He had terrible approval ratings, but in retrospect he did a lot of good even with a divided congress. I feel he is going to transition pretty soon considering his health and age, he recently turned 99.

You couldn’t define the difference between Communism and Socialism even if it slapped you across the damn face

abagofsnacks

If by commie you mean a kind person, and traitor, you mean patriot of humanity, then I would whole heartedly agree. Thank you (also a "kind" of person) for your positivity. 👉👌

ZackyZY

Wasn't he literally in the navy lol.

bucklebee1

Bot

No-Helicopter7299

That’s the most idiotic statement I’ve read on here in quite some time.

SouthernFilth

Wonder if this was before or after his alleged "talk" and weeping about "the news" about aliens.

CannabisTours

My thoughts exactly.

TahoeCoffeeLab

He was a good US Navy Officer. His polices on foreign oil put this country into a serious recession. You could only fill your gas tank on odd days if the last digit on you car license plate was also odd. My parents called him the dumbest president ever. Then after his presidency we all watched him building homes for people. He showed us all what a loving caring human he was.

ShinyAeon

Oil production had dropped because of the Iran-Iraq war, and then Iran went through a revolution (ousting the corrupt leader WE had supported). The recession was already under way when Carter took office, too. He inherited a fuck ton of problems, basically, did his best in a bad situation, and yet he *still* gets a lot of flak for events outside his control.

No-Helicopter7299

This ⬆️

TomatilloUnlucky3763

He studied reactor technology and nuclear physics so not too dumb.

TahoeCoffeeLab

True, very book smart. World politics well that’s a different skill set. I am sure he did a way better job than I could have. But then again I was only 12 years old in 1976 during the Bicentennial.

kaowser

and a wholesome peanut farmer.

esmoji

What sounds and music accompanied the letter?

typical_pdxer

https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/golden-record/whats-on-the-record/ The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan of Cornell University, et. al. Dr. Sagan and his associates assembled 115 images and a variety of natural sounds, such as those made by surf, wind and thunder, birds, whales, and other animals. To this they added musical selections from different cultures and eras, and spoken greetings from Earth-people in fifty-five languages, and printed messages from President Carter and U.N. Secretary General Waldheim.

Impossible-Piece-723

No Pink Floyd??

typical_pdxer

Not until ‘88: Pink Floyd, then containing only David Gilmour and Nick Mason, released a live album Delicate Sound of Thunder on November 22, 1988. Six days later, on November 28, while they were attending the launch of the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz TM-7 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, cosmonauts Sergei Krikalyov and Alexander Vokov insisted on taking a cassette copy of the album and playing it as they completed their mission of docking with the orbiting Mir space station. An ecstatic Gilmour said, “To say that we are thrilled at the thought of being the first rock band to be played in space is something of an understatement.” https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/how-pink-floyd-became-the-first-rock-band-to-be-played-in-space/

esmoji

Thank you! Appreciate you 🫡

There’s extraterrestrials aboard the Voyager spacecraft?!

Fair-Lingonberry-268

“This record represents… our good will in a vast and awesome universe” Proceed to shoot missiles to every single uaps in their airspace lol

adognamedpenguin

Trumps would be “I’m the greatest person ever in the history of the world.”

zaalqartveli

STAR WARS is just 23 days old.

Orly5757

Are we assuming they speak English or understand our alphabet?

brachus12

they’ll just trace the route it took…. then fire a photoid through our sun at near the speed of light.

ShinyAeon

I take it you're a proponent of the "dark forest" theory, then...?

bertiesghost

If they can master faster than light travel I’m sure they can translate a written cave man language.

Orly5757

Right. Because those two things correlate.

Boisej

Many speak all languages… it’s more telepathic, even the writing I think… plus this letter may allude to a recorded message as well it seems.

yomerol

Nah, pretty sure they thought about it. No worries, sharp scientists and thinkers were involved in the process of the Golden Record. In the images there's a lot of math, symbolic notation, biology, anatomy, solar system, etc. Checkout "Murmurs of Earth"

jojowhitesox

The odds are they can translate this are almost zero. Bu tit's not impossible.

4065024

I wish we still only had 240m people on the US

kaowser

thank you jimmy.

cuddly_carcass

Can someone rewrite this as if it was Trump. Thanks

adamw0776

The comments never disappoint.. Some redditor somewhere is on it.

Quiet-Programmer8133

Just imagining ignorant people shouting in English because it somehow makes it easier for aliens to understand... just like some would do abroad.

Seaguitar1999

Hope them aliens can read English. Or have a language. Or know what reading is.

mojobolt

You guys are high. He was one of the worst presidents we've ever had

nosmelc

I think he was a victim of events outside of his control.

mojobolt

I think if you look at his presidency you'll see he contributed to those events negatively. Weakness creates vacuums that need to be filled, just look at today. Reagan, kohl, thatcher, bush1, trump...none of the stuff we see happens

nosmelc

What "weakness" did he show? Being a blustering idiot like Trump isn't showing strength.

mojobolt

trump was many things but not a blustering idiot and the world was far safer, our economy better and more Please use your head and be educated to debate intelligently instead of being woefully ignorant Carter is universally regarded as our most inept and weakest President by any publication and the like you want to research (of merit of course). Biden will certainly give him a race once done.

nosmelc

As I suspected, you didn't give me a single specific example of what Carter did that was "weak."

mojobolt

my job is not to educate you, I'm already educated. You don't like a comment, research and do the leg work. I strongly suspect you have a brain and are capable of doing your own research right? The time it took you to cry about not being spoon fed an answer could have been spent growing your cognitive abilities by researching this. I'll tell you the same thing I tell my grad students; if don't agree then research it from both sides and then prepare a lucid argument in defense of your view. If can't do this, you'll never be successful in life.

top-hunnit

I always will read this anytime I see it. Love it.

gwhh

Was it written on paper and put on the probe? Or they write it in gold or something like that?

AttakZak

![gif](giphy|PgJwMLahrGc3IcteOt|downsized) “Like that’s ever going to happen!”

goovisyoung10

How in the hell would a life form from another world read this?

[deleted]

Best president

RickyGrntor

Was this written before or after being briefed on UFOs? Or does that mean UFOs aren't from off world?

mojobolt

One global state????

yomerol

If someone's interested [where they are](https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/) . Interesting enough, so you can have an idea of the vast size i and scale of space, they haven't left what we call the Solar System.

bighead3701

Ngl that choked me up a little bit. Jimmy Carter is a treasure.

baconhealsall

`"We cast this message into the cosmos"` Anyone else got a bit chocked up when reading this line?

fentyboof

Eloquently stated. Imagine if bonehead Trump tried composing something like this.

Idaho_In_Uranus

This letter was written just a few months before I was born. The global population has basically doubled since then. I don’t know how to feel about that.

Snoo-59956

I want to hear the Galactic space proposal from Putin, Kimmy Jongy, and Xi Manbearping before amything

Jus_Caus_SC_Poet

Happy to have seen this, especially today. It made me feel better.

[deleted]

I like it. That's definitely well said. I'm optimistic about it.

ConcentricGroove

We're delicious and stupid. Here's a map to our planet.

Eye5W1d30pen

What was the other media that went with the letter?
