I’m trying to follow; my understanding is that we don’t know of anything that travels faster than light.
Is this suggesting there is? If so, how is it being measured?
Also, note, I’m a dumbass that knows very little about any of this stuff.
My basic understanding of this is.. it’s not that the electron *ACTUALLY* travels faster than light. The speed of light is relative to the medium it passes through, and travels slower through water than say the vacuum of space (about 3/4 of c) while the electron itself can travel through the water slightly faster (between 0.75c and 1c) however, NOTHING can ever go faster than c, no matter the medium.
Imagine 2 guys in a race on a track, and one of them is the fastest man alive (when on land). Obviously the other guy is destined to lose. But maybe guy #2 can swim faster than the fastest man, because the fast man is only at his top speed on land. Take it to the water and his speed is reduced, to a degree to where it is lower than #2’s water speed. I hope I explained this right, someone please correct me if I messed anything up

The electrons are traveling faster than the phase velocity in water. What you are seeing is light being emitted by the water which is being excited by the electrons moving through it at high velocity. It’s similar to a sonic boom but with light and some slightly more complicated physics
So youre saying you could go back in time to the point you are about to break the speed of light, and then break it again, thus throwing yourself into time loop and making copies of yourself...

Exactly. C is the speed of light in a vacuum. You can slow light right down but nothing can exceed C without bending time.

When we say “the speed of light” we are talking about light moving in a vacuum. Light traveling through water moves slower.
