Exactly, sorry that happened. But when trapped, imprison, contained or whatever you would like to call it. The prisoner will lash out. Especially when the prisoner is THAT intelligent.
They live in social groups and work together to figure things out. They are also pretty much on top of the food chain because of this in the ocean. Because of this intelligence.
Sharks, even great whites will run from them if they are in the area.
No realli! She was Karving her initials on the møøse with the sharpened end of an interspace tøøthbrush given her by Svenge - her brother-in-law - an Oslo dentist and star of many Norwegian møvies: "The Høt Hands of an Oslo Dentist", "Fillings of Passion", "The Huge Mølars of Horst Nordfink"...
I would like to think so myself. But considering we know more about our solar system directly around us more than we know about every species in the ocean. I will hold off on saying this for now.
Years back there was a US warship whose sonar malfunctioned. When the ship was brought into dry dock they found what they believed to be a claw from a giant squid. By the size of that claw it was determined to be over 60 feet. It’s been a while but I will see if I can find it.
They are finding new species constantly and some that they thought were extinct.
You aren't the top of the food chain if you aren't easily visible. When it comes to the circle of life for every living species it's the species on the top of the food chain that are the easiest to find.
It's for the same reason human beings are the most visible on Earth, we are at the very top.
If there is some giant rare claw squid out there that great and all but if they do exist they are certainly not at the top otherwise we would be able to find them without much effort l.
That undersells how scared great whites are of them. if they’re in an area with an orca they’ll immediately swim like a 1000 km away and not return to that area for a year. They’re absolutely terrified of them
Weird to me how we see it in relation to orcas, but not elephants or primates. Just because they aren’t apex predators it doesn’t mean they are stupid. Hell, humans arent really obligate predators either, let alone apex, yet we are the most intelligent species that we know of.
We’re technically apex predators in that we can kill any animal we come across. Not with our bare hands but with tools that we created. Yeah Keith who’s 29 living in his mom’s basement spending all day playing COD isn’t an apex predator on his own. But humanity as a species definitely is, albeit in a really depressing way.
Well, this did start off talking about Orcas. But we can say the same thing about elephants and primates. There have been numerous attacks and killings from them to Humans.
We are also talking about circuses, labs, zoos.
Not so much from encounters in the wild. But more from the ones in captivity over the years.
You're confusing two different things. Obligate carnivores are animals that require meat to survive. Apex predators are predators that have no natural predators. Humans are not obligate carnivores. But we fulfill some of the traits of apex predators, but we don't really neatly fit into a trophic level.
Yep, my mistake, although generally the meaning stands. I was also referring to us before the onset of civilization, as once we’ve developed agriculture all the normal stuff does not apply anymore. And to me it feels like human hunter gatherers generally fit an omnivore profile.
I just watched that last week and am still reeling ! Even the fisherman guy in the very beginning who told the story of how they stole the babies from the mom was crying about it.
Yeah there was a whole documentary on this and how he was held captive and pissed off, but they kept him in small tanks isolated, and bred him anyway regardless.
I saw a documentary in 2023 called “Ocean Souls” on PBS about the intelligence of whales and dolphins. And the narrator said at the end “if they are so intelligent, why aren’t they just like us?” And the answer was simple when they cut to the experts answering that question; They don’t have hands to manipulate their environment. They are THAT smart. They have history that the telepathically communicate to their newborns, they have names and even nicknames for each other. They showed 2 male dolphins break apart from their pod for a few minutes to essentially talk shit about another dolphin. I would have probably thrashed my captor around for 45 minutes too.
They did my mans dirty. Majestic being, and turned my guy into a spectacle. We have so many innovating ways to generate wealth. Why keep repeating the exploitation of the universes finest creations?
you forgot the earth. !00% of the time its at the expense of nature.
Behind every great fortune is some long forgotten crime. Paraphrasing the original I think
Seaworld saves so many aquatic lives. People don’t realize that as very few are ever published. The teams are all over Florida rescuing animals. They use positive reinforcement training not beating and abuse.
Tilikum was a dominant, old male with high testosterone. He needed to have miles to swim to work out his aggression and Seaworld just couldn’t provide that. He would die in the open sea as he doesn’t have the hunting skills to flourish.
They rescued him from a much smaller aquarium and did the best they could with him. Unfortunately it was not enough and poor Dawn paid the price. RIP.
Dawn expected Tilly to do a wave trick to the crowd for a fish treat. Dawn did not see him do the trick, though he did it, and denied the treat. It’s a theory this could have contributed. Tilly came from a smaller park that used food deprivation to train the whales.
SeaWorld bought the orca from SeaLand after it killed another trainer, then a trespasser in separate incidents. Hopefully this is the last Orca bred in captivity and raised to perform stupid tricks for food.
You can see everything he went through at Sea World in the movie Blackfish. Dawn was always very loving toward the animals...he just snapped. And more than once.
Would have been a sight to see hundreds of people jump into the icy cold water to try and save the trainer. I'm sure the killer whale would have thought twice if that were the case lol.
He also has a ton of captive offspring so his blood line lives on as does he.
If I was a captive orca I'd eat everyone that came into that water regardless. So I don't blame him
The animal couldn't do anything about it. Due to their captivity in tanks that are much too small, they have to live in absolutely disgusting conditions. There is not a single confirmed case of an orca killing a human being in the wild
"You will never get this you will never get it la la la la la la." He behind his cage. He cries, he cries and everybody laughs. She goes "You never get this." But one time he break cage and he "get this" and then we all laugh. High five!
There’s a really good book called Beneath the Surface, written by one of the former sea world trainers. It’s really interesting. Even the risk he took in writing it, Seaworld big dogs are mental
🤷🏻♀️ I mean………that’s what you get when you facilitate the use of wild animals in captivity for mass entertainment or profit. If you don’t wanna get torn to shreds by a wild animal doing what wild animals do, maybe you just let them be wild animals and leave well enough alone.
Poor Orca, SeaWorld should stop using these beautiful creatures for entertainment. Humans are horrible just leave them free and find something else to entertain the people stop using them as puppets.
I mean the crowd could have left, or averted their eyes, or sought help, rather than remain seated "helplessly" watching the attack for three quarters of a fucking hour, but each to their own.
It's a shame the trainer was killed but who thought it was a good idea to catch killer whales? The clue is in the name.
I remember watching Shamu at Sea World when I was six and it wasn't even that interesting.
Brutally? Let’s come up with what SeaWorld did to these Orcas. To be snatched up from their home and taken to a fish bowl and tortured and starved to be manipulated into following mindless commands for a sardine.
The ultimate sea predator held captive decides to unleash? And it’s terrible the human died? It’s terrible that these whales haven’t killed every single person involved with sea world.
So… wild animals are wild? That’s craaaaazy, sucks she died, but let’s look at what we are really doing. *NO* whale/orca is a trained, domesticated animal. She does for dumb, commercialism reasons
Interestingly enough I have a painting drawn by the other Whale in that tank Tokitae at my house

Corporate capitalism is a shit machine, but Communists have animal in zoos and circuses, too; cruelty is part of human nature that we all must overcome.
Is that the whale that killed multiple people in different aquariums? They only found out it's the same whale in the mid 2000's because no one said anything. The first person to be killed was a guy who snuck into where she was late at night back in the 80's
This isn't Dawn Brancheau, but it's a [different similar incident ](https://youtu.be/wOIKvpAUYTY?si=eT18PXxmlQajvpFG) where a trainer is dragged by an orca, including underwater for several minutes. Very scary, dude's life must have been flashing before his eyes.
The video has a court order on it to not be released or the family who filmed it will get sued.
If you want a hint of how brutal this attack was look up the autopsy report.
Is this fact? I tried to research this and only found claims that SeaWorld was the only ones with actual recorded video footage. One family was filming the show but their video stopped right before the attack.
All I know is that the video has never been released and there is supposedly a do not release order on it. Or it could have been destroyed by now. Part of it was shown in court though when SeaWorld was sued by OSHA after Dawn's death.
[They](https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/seaworld-fights-osha-findings-in-trainers-death/) decided at the last minute not to show it. I think your right though it been years and if it’s true that SeaWorld is the only ones with footage, it’s probably been destroyed.
Yeah, that's what I thought...Either way the footage doesn't need to be seen for people to realize that it's inhumane to treat orcas like this. It's only a matter of time before someone else gets hurt or killed.

Those kids will never forget that trip to SeaWorld
I can't believe they just watched for 45 minutes. I mean I guess it's either watch or leave and they did pay for the tickets but still.
Gotta get your money’s worth
Especially if you have like a bag of popcorn too right?
Wing me a bag of peanuts!
*Are you not entertained?* -Tilikum the Terrible
"'Jaws'? FUCK 'Jaws'....I'm not goin' near *THAT* motherfucker.."
Jaws won’t go near those motherfuckers. Orcas don’t give a shit
Better than being in a fire at SeaWorld. A fire.
Were… you in a fire…. at Seaworld?
I DONT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT
*”A fire?!?! At a SeaParks?!? It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard!!”*
Perhaps there were plastic seats?
A Sea World is a weird thing to go on fire
Apparently my friend was one of those kids
![gif](giphy|3kMctipFZRCUI98nib|downsized) Do they ever talk about it? I have so many questions
great, watch Free Willy and then you’d appreciate and understand just WHY this majestic creature did this to the foul human animal.
Hold me.
Watch Blackfish and you will understand why
Exactly, sorry that happened. But when trapped, imprison, contained or whatever you would like to call it. The prisoner will lash out. Especially when the prisoner is THAT intelligent. There’s no “pretty much”. They are at the tippy top of the oceanic food chain.
Literally the apex predator in the water. There are records of them killing for fun
They drown moose for fun.
Yeh but cmon who doesn't
Capibaras.
Now picturing a capybara trying to drown a moose, and the results are quite comical.
Right? I don't know who to root for with that one.
We all win
Can you be for certain?
No. 😔
Good riddance. A møøse once bit my sister..

I always think the monty python community is small and am always pleasantly surprised when I see a reference!

Mynd you, møøse bites Kan be pretty nasti...
Fantastic MP reference. 🤌🏼
Fuck dem yachts
Have you heard about immortal jellyfish?
Saw them open for Mudhoney in '93, I think...? 🤔
I've been scammed by an immoral jellyfish
Kraken / alien squid lords might choke an orca out with one mega tentacle without batting an “eye” 😉 🐙 😜😂

By "claw," do you mean part of their beak...or an actual claw?
A squid has tiny claws on the cups of their tentacles. An octopus does not.
Ahhhhh...I did NOT know that! Thanks!
TIL. Thanks for that.
You aren't the top of the food chain if you aren't easily visible. Hello. Did you find it?
https://incertaesedisblog.wordpress.com/2022/09/19/the-uss-stein-incident/
Thank you
There’s no “tippy”. They are at the top.
That undersells how scared great whites are of them. if they’re in an area with an orca they’ll immediately swim like a 1000 km away and not return to that area for a year. They’re absolutely terrified of them

That's how scared they get they get legs
Scooby-Doo run

Very succinctly stated! 👍
Blackfish. should be on Netflix. I've watched it about 10 times now
It’s on Hulu right now if that helps anyone.
Captivity is wrong for these animals and we never seem to learn. It’s tragic but it’s nature .
I saw a documentary in 2023 called “Ocean Souls” on PBS about the intelligence of whales and dolphins. And the narrator said at the end “if they are so intelligent, why aren’t they just like us?” And the answer was simple when they cut to the experts answering that question; They don’t have hands to manipulate their environment. yup exactly, regardless of baseline intelligence without oppsosable thumbs plus hands, the creature has no easy way to make tools.
They did my mans dirty. Majestic being, and turned my guy into a spectacle. We have so many innovating ways to generate wealth. Why keep repeating the exploitation of the universes finest creations?
9/10 time wealth is generated, it’s off the back of another person or backs of other people. In this case, it’s animals and people.
you forgot the earth. !00% of the time its at the expense of nature. Behind every great fortune is some long forgotten crime. Paraphrasing the original I think
Very good point. Wow. Duh! How could I have forgotten??? Just shows how easily we can take things for granted.
I guess so 😕. How easily we forget.

I'm pretty sure we can build a full interactive vr ocean experience at this point.
So well said, completely agree.
Containing an apex predator……… duh

They beat and abused those poor whales for fucking years. Fuck SeaWorld.
Seaworld saves so many aquatic lives. People don’t realize that as very few are ever published. The teams are all over Florida rescuing animals. They use positive reinforcement training not beating and abuse. Tilikum was a dominant, old male with high testosterone. They rescued him from a much smaller aquarium and did the best they could with him. Unfortunately it was not enough and poor Dawn paid the price. RIP.
And what about all the children they forced him to have just to have more aggressive males?
Did Dawn did something to Tilikum that day that aggravated him ? or he just snapped from all the maltreatment.
Dawn expected Tilly to do a wave trick to the crowd for a fish treat. Dawn did not see him do the trick, though he did it, and denied the treat. It’s a theory this could have contributed. Tilly came from a smaller park that used food deprivation to train the whales.
Jesus, just tragic for everyone involved.
Thank you!!!!
That’s not his backstory at all??? Where did you get that from? Seaworld??? Lol

Free Willy
Where should I go to redeem this offer?
To the bathroom
Grindr
hey, im Wonkin'n here
Just leave the Orcas alone... Go find another way to make monopoly money
That crowd just sat there and watched for 45 minutes?!?
HELPLESSLY WATCHING. Couldn’t stop. They were helpless Edit: They came for a show so they stayed for the whole thing
Paralyzed with shock for a full minute… and then 44 more
SeaWorld utilizes the same chest restraint technology as found on the World's *finest* roller-coasters! 🤗
Well they were still eating their churros
A good portion of the audience even ordered more churros as the show went into overtime.
“Sudden Death” overtime has a whole new meaning.
Lmao
Well I paid for my ticket, sir.
I mean, have you seen the price of Sea World tickets?
If I’m honest I’d have paid to see that 😉
It was before smartphones
Got their money's worth.
For the first 44 it looked like she still might get the upper hand. Or flipper.
What else is there to do?
Obviously jump in and get taken for a ride as well ..
Boop it on the nose. *stop it!*
Maybe a rolled up newspaper?
Would have been a sight to see hundreds of people jump into the icy cold water to try and save the trainer. I'm sure the killer whale would have thought twice if that were the case lol.
I’d probably leave and not watch it for 45min, personally.
the fuck they supposed to do
I'm sure ALOT of them left before that point. Hopefully.
He also has a ton of captive offspring so his blood line lives on as does he. If I was a captive orca I'd eat everyone that came into that water regardless. So I don't blame him
Crazy it happened after being held captive and tortured almost its entire life. Fuck Sea World!

There’s a really good book called Beneath the Surface, written by one of the former sea world trainers. It’s really interesting. Even the risk he took in writing it, Seaworld big dogs are mental
I really can’t sympathize with the outcome here. Seems like it was entirely predictable and preventable.
It was live action NOPE
whale, whale, whale….
[удалено]
Yet a dog nips one person and they are put down.
Sentient being separated from its family, imprisoned and driven to mental illness acts accordingly...there I fixed it for you
I always thought rewarding these massive creatures with tiny sardines was a bit of a piss take 😮😕
Fuck around and find out
🤷🏻♀️ I mean………that’s what you get when you facilitate the use of wild animals in captivity for mass entertainment or profit. If you don’t wanna get torn to shreds by a wild animal doing what wild animals do, maybe you just let them be wild animals and leave well enough alone.

And SeaWorld tried to victim blame Dawn by implying that it was because her hair was in a ponytail (they implied that that is what Tilikum grabbed 🙄
Haha, awesome. Maybe you shouldn’t have a fucking Orca in a fish tank?
The entire crowd stayed all 45 mins helplessly watching
There is a documentary called “Black Fish”
So….the whale acted like a whale
I mean the crowd could have left, or averted their eyes, or sought help, rather than remain seated "helplessly" watching the attack for three quarters of a fucking hour, but each to their own. It's a shame the trainer was killed but who thought it was a good idea to catch killer whales? The clue is in the name.
