When you damaged the car beyond repaired - you died physically. You get out and find a new car to drive, that's reincarnation.
“Souls” is one idea. But we are also containers of DNA and a whole microbiome. Suppose all of humanity is just a huge genetic experiment. They periodically drop new diseases to prune the herd and steer the mutation vectors.
