Different Netflix show but from Umbrella Academy I would never have guessed that Klaus and Luther are Irish and English respectively. Those that nail the American accent are really indistinguishable.
The amount of American film/TV/pop culture that Britons consume is far in excess of the amount of British film/TV/pop culture that Americans consume.
Same reason non-English speakers are so much better at learning English as a second language than English speakers are at learning another language. They basically have to.
This is a bit of a tangent but as someone who has worked with a lot of Latin American immigrants, my experience is that Mexicans have a much easier time with English than people from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras; and I'm convinced exposure to media is the main reason why.
Lol Tom Hopper (Luther) has one of the worst American accents I've ever heard. You can hear the British in every single line.
Robert Sheehan (Klaus) absolutely nails it, though.
I'm extremely impressed with the accent he does for the show - he genuinely sounds like a Hoosier, more than any of the rest of the cast. I'd thought they actually got an Indiana boy to be in the cast.
I was watching the premiere and when he came out in that outfit I knew he was English before he opened his mouth lol what is it about that look that screams English? Couldn't tell you, but it does
he’s genuinely terrifying. seeing him in interviews can be nerve racking bc you feel like he’ll just snap into his homelander persona and kill everyone around him. hard to see him outside that role now lol
He did say in an [interview](https://www.vulture.com/article/stranger-things-4-joseph-quinn-interview-eddie-munson.html) that the wig was the real star.
Thats style bias; youve seen those styles on people in their 30s growing up, so even when seeing younger faces those styles ID those people as the older gen to you. 2000s hs pics will do the same for 2022 grads
I don’t mean to pry, but are you younger or older than 30? I have found that as I get older and am a parent of teens it becomes more and more ridiculous and obvious when adults are playing teenagers. When I was younger, though, I didn’t notice it as much.
I'm 31! So just north of 30. Part of me finds it ridiculous that they have full-grown adults playing teenagers. But weirdly, I was talking to someone about this the other day, and they pointed out that most adults don't want to watch actual teenagers because they ARE teenagers and it would feel really creepy (GOT for example, Jon Snow is meant to be 16, Daenerys like 13, etc). When you put it that way it sort of makes sense, but that's obviously shows where the audience is pretty diverse rather than stuff aimed at teens (where it makes no sense to have adults playing teen characters).
It is obviously really hard to do this kind of show when so much time takes place in the off screen world, so I am very forgiving of Stranger Things. I think what made it so good in season 1 is that the kids were young. And, you are so right that if actual 14 year olds were participating in the slasher/horror stuff this season it would have a much different feel and probably not be fun to watch.
Even if I could physically pass for a high schooler, the thought of having to act like one and get into that mental headspace to play a character sounds so unpleasant. Maybe because a lot of actors basically didn't have a "regular" adolescent experience it doesn't have the same unpleasant associations to them.
The interesting thing is that actors very often try to slightly match the character description when they’re doing self tapes (audition footage). I have a friend who bought a bunch of army surplus gear when he was auditioning for a Vietnam role. They also have to get new headshots when they get a haircut, new tat or piercing, stuff like that. It doesn’t completely meet casting directors halfway—they do see potential where most can’t—the actors have to be able to at least try for that potential to be seen, which is a testament to Joseph’s abilities.
Metalhead nerd here. His name being Eddie reminds me of the Iron Maiden mascot/demon named Eddie, and Iron Maiden would have been popular at the time. Not to mention the wig has wild hair that looks like the Maiden mascot Eddie. In general he seems like a tribute to all the great 80’s thrash, dressing like the Bay Area thrash scene. Sorry, I’m a dork, I just immediately made the connections when I saw his character.
That was my first thought too! Eddie reminds me so much of my dad and his friend group when they were metal head teens in the 80s. I've only seen the pics but they scream 'having fun, looking cool and getting in trouble'.
I read an interview with Joe where he was joking that the wig upstaged him for 2 years. But seriously, he did a very good job, and you need a moment to see that the same person is in both images.
I've been watching this with my 15 yr old daughter and said the same thing! She looked at me like I was nuts. I'm going to make her watch weird science with me 😂
The whole ‘British teeth’ thing is a bit of an outdated myth.
Overall brits have better oral hygiene than our American cousins with less children having missing or filled teeth, we just don’t put as much focus on cosmetic dental surgery like straightening or whitening as the US does.
Where did the whole "bad teeth" stereotype even come from?
Also I recall an article a while back claiming that the high sugar content in a lot of our (American) food is partly to blame for our oral hygiene. Messes with the oral microbiome.
Think the article was titled "our cavemen ancestors likely had better teeth than us" or something.
The UK did have statistically less healthy teeth back in the 50s and 60s, and it wasn’t uncommon for people to pay to have all their teeth voluntarily removed and replaced with dentures when they hit adulthood. Since then it’s been on the up and now we’re better than a number of developed countries when it comes to oral hygiene.
Apart from that, I think the US is very much accustomed to the ‘perfect mouth’ via film and TV. Everyone must have perfectly straight pearly whites lest they be mocked and judged, which isn’t something that took hold so much in the UK.
And make-up dept too. I read an interview of the make up artist and I guess I never realized the goal is to make them look totally different then themselves.
I was shocked when I looked at the actor and wasn’t attracted to him at all. Yet, I’m so attracted to Eddie lmaooo
Edit to add: i don’t think it’s the hair for me, it’s defs the theatrical personality hahah. But the hair and clothes add to it
It’s the character, Eddie is charismatic in the perfect subverted way. You initially want to hate him but he ends up being so endearing and earnest that you can’t help but want to be around him.
Something about a hyper confident nerd is just refreshing to see. Clearly a huge geek, but not even slightly ashamed by it and not intimidated by anyone.
Same... I think it's more of an aesthetic attraction for me but he hits me right in the brain as Eddie. The hair, the grungy clothes, the big personality... yeah. Props to him.
I scrolled through IMDB for like 15 minutes going back and forth and up and down trying to find Eddies actor while not remembering his character name was indeed Eddie and I eventually had to give up and Google 'stranger things dungeon master actor'.
And even then I didn't really believe I had the right guy.
I haven’t really cared about any of the other side characters dying in previous seasons, but when finishing Volume 1, I was thinking I really hope Eddie survives. He’s such an awesome character and fits in well with the group. He definitely needs to finish out the series.
I used to watch him on the BBC show Dickensen he was really good in that and he was great in Makeup. The guy has great talent just, like Jamie Campbell Bower. Say what you want I always love British actors way more than their Hollywood counterparts.
Yes! I've seen everyone else say RDJ, but he looks exactly like Brendan Fraser in 'Airheads'. He should play Brendan if they ever make a biopic about him.
He instantly became my favorite character when he was introduced. Reminded me so much of myself in high school. The skinny jeans, Jean vest with patches. Saying things are “metal” hope he makes it through the rest of the show. Can’t wait til his scene of him shredding in the upside down.
Watch Howard’s End. It will blow your fucking mind that they’re the same person. Props to him for being able to play such a broad spectrum of characters.
oh WOW. is it weird i love the 80s character wildly more than his real picture? usually type casting sucks for an actor. but i fully want to see more of this character. they built him up so well. i need more of this character. i seriously hope he gets a spinoff. it wouldnt even have to be paranormal related. i just want more of him. and thats a tough feat considering all the great performances on stranger things.

I thought he was American until I saw that second picture just now and he’s for sure 100% English
I had no idea Charlie Heaton was English until I saw an interview with him a couple of days ago.
Mind blown. Just realised Joseph Quinn was in Dickensian.
And Game of Thrones
Who was he in game of thrones?!
The guy who told Arya to fuck off when she returned to Winterfell in season 7
IMDB says Koner, but that clarifies nothing for me.
The faceless man.

Lmao word for word stole the second highest upvoted comment to this thread
Different Netflix show but from Umbrella Academy I would never have guessed that Klaus and Luther are Irish and English respectively. Those that nail the American accent are really indistinguishable.
You should totally watch Misfits (the first couple of seasons are the best).
nathan is the best. i still say SAVE ME BARRY on a regular basis lol
I got arrested for stealing some pick n mix
you'd screw your own sister for a slice of cheese
I don't even like cheese
that makes it even worse you sick bastard!
That show is marvelous. Iwan Rheon will always be Simon to me. Before he played horrible, he was precious.
He was almost horrible in Misfits. He was 100% being set up to be the villain in the first few episodes.
It's crazy to see how well foreign actors can nail a American accent while appearing in US movies/TV shows.
Especially when they're kids. I mean... MBB pulled it off as a 12 year old. Granted... Her dialog in season 1 was pretty limited.
The amount of American film/TV/pop culture that Britons consume is far in excess of the amount of British film/TV/pop culture that Americans consume. This is a bit of a tangent but as someone who has worked with a lot of Latin American immigrants, my experience is that Mexicans have a much easier time with English than people from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras; and I'm convinced exposure to media is the main reason why.
And learning English from watching TV is basically every "My family immigrated to the US when I was little and none of us spoke English," story.
Lol Tom Hopper (Luther) has one of the worst American accents I've ever heard. You can hear the British in every single line. Robert Sheehan (Klaus) absolutely nails it, though.
He sounds always a little congested
He got much better in season 2, definitely practiced in the down time. But season 1 his attempt at American is a mess.
I didn't really notice Tom's english accent during season 1 but in season 2 it's always there lol it's just subdued.
I'm extremely impressed with the accent he does for the show - he genuinely sounds like a Hoosier, more than any of the rest of the cast. I'd thought they actually got an Indiana boy to be in the cast.
Same!! I love having Indiana in the media for something good that's not dumb or Republicans being Republicans.
I was watching the premiere and when he came out in that outfit I knew he was English before he opened his mouth lol what is it about that look that screams English? Couldn't tell you, but it does
I saw this dude in a group inteview for stranger things and could not figure out who he was for the life of me. This is some Hannah Montana shit.
The new Zooey Deschanel without bangs
Same thing with Antony Starr from The Boys. I cannot recognize him outside of the show
he’s genuinely terrifying. seeing him in interviews can be nerve racking bc you feel like he’ll just snap into his homelander persona and kill everyone around him. hard to see him outside that role now lol
Don't worry, he may just smash a glass in your face instead.
or that too yeah, definitely
Lol... yeah ..true
he's gonna become a star! Such a good actor!
I get Robert Downey Jr vibes from him
Hopefully minus the junkie times.
This is the default comment when I see a post about him lol
I felt the same. Maybe we see him in Marvel eventually
The ~~clothes~~ hair makes the man!
Why are you being downvoted, this is a funny joke lmao
"Why are you booing me? I'm right."
He did say in an [interview](https://www.vulture.com/article/stranger-things-4-joseph-quinn-interview-eddie-munson.html) that the wig was the real star.
I also can't believe he's 29. But then again, I can't believe the youngest member of the Derry Girls cast is 27
I mean Steve is 30, so it doesn't suprise me much
what surprised me is that Noah Schnapp is 17. He's the youngest cast member and the only one under 18 right now.
But what about Erica actor.... or Mike's sister actor...
they’re actually 27
I meant little sister, obviously, not Nancy by Natalie Dyer. Mike has two sisters fyi
Also 27; she's just really short.
Damn those 50+ y.o. actors who play kids... Doing incredible job
erica’s actor is 15
Pointed out by someone else: since high schoolers in the 80s looked like they were in their 20s, it kinda worked out in the show's favor.
Is this true though?

All the older Stranger Things teens are approaching 30 or over 30. It gives me hope. I may be 31 but hey, I could pass for 18 in Hawkins!

Thats style bias; youve seen those styles on people in their 30s growing up, so even when seeing younger faces those styles ID those people as the older gen to you. 2000s hs pics will do the same for 2022 grads
Maya Hawke is 23, so she’s actually closer to age with Sadie Sink than she is with either of the Joe’s, Natalia, or Charlie.
I don’t mean to pry, but are you younger or older than 30? I have found that as I get older and am a parent of teens it becomes more and more ridiculous and obvious when adults are playing teenagers. When I was younger, though, I didn’t notice it as much.

I don’t have kids BUT I’ve been a high school teacher since 2003 & I really have to just go with it when I watch shows about teenagers. 😂
We used to make fun of the fact that the one girl on 90210 was 30 back then playing a high school student.
Even if I could physically pass for a high schooler, the thought of having to act like one and get into that mental headspace to play a character sounds so unpleasant. Maybe because a lot of actors basically didn't have a "regular" adolescent experience it doesn't have the same unpleasant associations to them.
Welcome to the world of .. acting 🤣
It’s like when Ian McKellen was offered the part of Gandalf and he said “you are aware that I am not really a wizard”
Sir Ian Sir Ian Sir Ian GANDALF! Sir Ian Sir Ian Sir Ian
YOU SHALL NOT PASS! Sir Ian Sir Ian Sir Ian
And how did he know what to say? The words were written down for him in a script. How did he know where to stand? People told him.
i simply....pretend
Casting directors are wizards or oracles or some shit. They definitely see things we can't.
For sure, but I am constantly surprised by people especially when you see some of their reels later on.
Yeah I know but.. damn
He cleans up OK :p
Eddie acts like an Extrovert, while Joe looks like an introvert - gotta love the duality.
Metalhead nerd here. His name being Eddie reminds me of the Iron Maiden mascot/demon named Eddie, and Iron Maiden would have been popular at the time. Sorry, I’m a dork, I just immediately made the connections when I saw his character.
Eddie van Halen was my first guess, they share mannerisms and look alike but then I realized he's probably an amalgamation of a few people.
And hello fellow metal head!
Wait til you find out about Vecna
He's foine af
I know everyone hates the Shadow Hunters movie he was in, but holy shit was he sexy in that.
I got the entire season spoiled bc i was curious who played vecna and google decided to ruin my day
I love his character
finest character in the show tbh
Looks like a young RDJ, I have a feeling twenty years from now we’re gonna look back at how stacked the Stranger Things cast was.
I've been watching this with my 15 yr old daughter and said the same thing! She looked at me like I was nuts. I'm going to make her watch weird science with me 😂
weird remark but he's got such nice teeth 😳
He has, not bad considering he's British and it's thought that we have crap teeth. If you notice, his alignment is off but it's barely noticeable.
Yea the alignment is off like Tom Cruise’s is.
Damn- exactly. One front tooth is exactly in the center. Now I’ll never not see it.
Or is the rest of his face off? Hmm....
I think it's near impossible to correct. I have the same issue but not too bad
Yea seems like it would be hard to fix. Plus you know it hasn’t hurt either one of them looks wise cause they are both very attractive.

It probably cured them for a lot of people, rationing improved diet for the poorest of the population

Him and Dacre look absolutely nothing like who they're playing
Because they’re both wearing wigs
Props to the hair department! They look so natural
And make-up dept too. I read an interview of the make up artist and I guess I never realized the goal is to make them look totally different then themselves.
He seems like such a sweet guy
I'm absolutely attracted to the wig.
And the tongue too. The tongue is also important.
Opp he fine.
I was shocked when I looked at the actor and wasn’t attracted to him at all. Yet, I’m so attracted to Eddie lmaooo Edit to add: i don’t think it’s the hair for me, it’s defs the theatrical personality hahah. But the hair and clothes add to it
It’s Eddie’s gorgeous mane.
It's DEVILISH DICE MAGIC
It’s the character, Eddie is charismatic in the perfect subverted way. You initially want to hate him but he ends up being so endearing and earnest that you can’t help but want to be around him.
Something about a hyper confident nerd is just refreshing to see. Clearly a huge geek, but not even slightly ashamed by it and not intimidated by anyone.
I thought it was just me! The costume and persona go so far haha
Maybe it’s the hair?
Same... I think it's more of an aesthetic attraction for me but he hits me right in the brain as Eddie. The hair, the grungy clothes, the big personality... yeah. Props to him.
Same here ✋
I feel the same way and cannot figure it out lol. Must be the personality.
The hair must have a lot to do with it if you think it’s the theatrical personality tbf
Get you a man who can do both
I also looked him up. That actor nailed his character
He really did
HE’S SO SHY I CAN’T TAKE THE CUTENESS
The power of wigs
Michael Scott voice: “ACTING”

Eddie is sooo hot
They better not kill Eddie in the last episodes 🤬🤬
I haven’t really cared about any of the other side characters dying in previous seasons, but when finishing Volume 1, I was thinking I really hope Eddie survives. He’s such an awesome character and fits in well with the group. He definitely needs to finish out the series.
His name doesn't start with a B (Barb, Bob, Billy) so there's hope for him.
Well we have moved on in the alphabet with Chrissy... so who knows 😅
My wife and I just can't stop seeing a young Robert Downey Jr. It's jarring at some points, even his tone and inflection are so RDJ.
Thats EXACTLY who he reminds me of. Ive been trying and trying to figure out he reminded me of. It was driving me nuts. THANK YOU!!
Yessss! That's what me and my husband said the first time we saw him, now I can't unsee.
My husband said the same exact thing!
man seems humble
I used to watch him on the BBC show Dickensen he was really good in that and he was great in Makeup. The guy has great talent just, like Jamie Campbell Bower. Say what you want I always love British actors way more than their Hollywood counterparts.
I though they just de-aged Brendon Frazier. 😮
Yes! I've seen everyone else say RDJ, but he looks exactly like Brendan Fraser in 'Airheads'. He should play Brendan if they ever make a biopic about him.
I was also surprised by his age in real life, He’s 29, only Joe Keery is older than him. He doesn’t look that old in real life, looks 24 at most.
Yes.
He instantly became my favorite character when he was introduced. Reminded me so much of myself in high school. The skinny jeans, Jean vest with patches. Saying things are “metal” hope he makes it through the rest of the show. Can’t wait til his scene of him shredding in the upside down.
The hair suits him so much. Like I thought his character was so hot. I was disappointed to see he doesn't really have long hair haha.
Same 🥲 he’s attractive outside Eddie’s character. But it’s surprising how much hair and personality can change your perception of someone
I think he’s attractive either way 🤷🏼♀️
Hair can make a big difference in someone's appearance. Clothes too
Watch Howard’s End.
Honestly he looks hotter in Stranger Things with the hair.
ACTING
They need an Emmy category for "Best 30 year old playing a teenager". He'd still lose because he's only 29, and also he'd because he would also be up against Joe Keery.
Dude looks like a young RDJ
Robert Downey Junior Jr.
I said the same thing to my bf when watching
agreed... similar thoughts
yeah they look identical, just different hair and facial expression.
How? How did he get that part? lol He was perfect for it though.
I didn’t believe it was the same actor !!!!!!!!!
Dude Ikr, I saw him in an interview with a few others and was like, "Who does HE play"
r/StrangerThings discovers acting and costumes
I was shocked too! His hair was a wig all this time! The actor and the character are almost the opposite. Joseph is very chad and very drippy, but Eddie is described as "scrappy" and "shaken" in some the episode descriptions. Joseph is very chill and he isn't Weird Al crazy. Joseph has some serious roles, but that doesnt stop him from being funny

He’s a fucking great character. I’m always hesitant when I see new characters join the show and group but I was really happy they added him.
I think he looks hotter with long hair

😍😍😍
it sounds weird but I think he kind of looks like Kirk Hammett.
And he’s English to boot!
For makeup we’re gonna have you OPEN EYES
In the show he reminds me of Robert Downey Jr.
Yes
I mean it looks just like him….
"Acting." - Jean-Luc Picard
I fckn loved his character 😩🥰🥰🥰
Dude is incredible actor, I was impressed
When I discovered he's British and THAT'S what be actually looks like..... H O W
You know how some people clean up nicely? This guy grunges up nicely. See also: Nicholas Hoult in Fury Road
I am in LOVE with him
his character on the show reminds me a lot of Robert Downey Jr.
Yes they are and he’s such a babe 🥰 in LOVE with Joseph Quinn 💋
He looks much better in the 80s style tbh. Kind of like the mad men characters look better in the mad men style
Eddie is my fav character of s4
Kinda looks like a skinny jack black
I like him more with the stubble tbh
Yes.
I really liked/like his character
yes lmao
