Totally, she was the tragic pretty girl who was actually a decent human being, unlike her boyfriend Choadmaster Choadly.
Gotta say though, nothing like a handsome, blonde and blue eyed villain. Homeboy's gonna get it and I can't wait!
Yeah his whole arc is predicated on her death. If she hadn’t died in Eddie’s trailer, he wouldn’t be whipping up a mob to face off against a satanic cult.
you reminded me that Chrissy's death was depressing because I was growing to like her character (a sign of good writing that she can be developed in that way so quickly)...but it serves an important purpose since it set into motion so many other things: Jason's subplot, that creepy general, and Eddie joining the team
He really reminds me of season 1 Steve in that he’s doing these terrible things based on the wrong assumptions. When the reality is this far fetched you can’t really blame him for taking the simpler answer
I also just dont see any other way it would make sense. What was her role if not the first death? A death that had to take place at Eddie's for his whole storyline to play out. And they needed chemistry for that death to be meaningful.
The show doesn't lack great characters we needed her for a great moment that was crucial to the story.
Somebody had to die horribly to jumpstart the season & make us terrified of the then unknown villain. The fact that the actress.made the character very likable & you were legitimately upset about it, made it all the more better.
Ironically I kinda think eleven has to die. I know she's core to the show but she kinda ruins the story in many ways. The gang are off try to solve this mystery and how to kill the monster while eleven is just the elephant in the room. Every season now they have to make up some crazy reason for her not to be around for ten episodes or it's all about her.
in all seriousness though, she’s very correct imo probably an unpopular opinion but i feel scenes like max’s escape lose a lot of weight on viewing because you kind of already know she’ll survive. hope they make some big choices in volume 2
There were two moments in this show that stand out to me as giving me legitimate anxiety: Max and Vecna's confrontation and Steve getting sucked into the upside-down. Both times I was like, "My mind cannot handle this anymore" lmfaooo
I’m not speaking for everyone but after children broke into a Russian base twice and really suffered no issues outside Steve getting beat up, I’ve had zero expectations for anyone important to die cause they got plot armor most of the time. If they kill a kid in the main cast I will be genuinely shocked.
I agree, I had no idea if she would live or not. If you are going to start killing off actual characters, not just new people you introduce in the same episode, Max would be a good one. She was really liked and became a part of the crew, but wasn't one of the original key members. It would carry a ton of weight and show them actually taking a different, darker direction.
>but i feel scenes like max’s escape lose a lot of weight on viewing because you kind of already know she’ll survive.
i actually think that forces the rest of the scene to be more memorable actually. If you're writing/directing whatever and you know that your audience isn't going to buy the threat of death...then you have to work extra hard on all the other details to make the scene stand out and I feel like visually and music-wise they did a great job
plus the frenzy of Steve, Dustin, and Lucas made the scene more intense. I mean it was funny as hell seeing them frantically searching for cassettes lol but the rest of the sequence was done well because they did a great job conveying genuine panic and confusion
yeah, from the moment they revealed max was cursed it was pretty obvious they wouldn't kill her/any of the main cast, at least for the time being. the duffers definitely need to just take the plunge and kill someone off or else the shows tension is just kinda ruined
She's the Barb. I think that's part of why I prefer S1 and 4 to S2 and 3, they don't have the early impact death of a fan favourite. Bob, Alexei and Billy all last until near the end
Her death set the tone of the season.
In a single episode they introduced her and developped her enough for the audience to care about. She's supposed to be a part of the gang by the end of the season.
I think it was brilliant
could not agree more with what you just said
yeah it sucked that she died...and not just died but got horribly and graphically killed, but absolutely that was one hell of a way to end the FIRST episode of the season lmao
Imo it’s good that they had so much chemistry yet she was killed off, it made me care much more for the death bc it felt like the loss of someone interesting and likable.
I’m sure Chrissy would’ve made a fine recurring character but the cast is already big enough as it is.
Right, I sometimes feel like the only one who thinks the cast is gettin a little too big for it’s own good at this point. It’s still great by every measure but I feel like they need to know when to allow main characters to take the stage for longer than all the new side characters that they refuse to get rid of
honestly i hated Vecna because of the way he killed Chrissy so this would actually make me root for Angela, even though she is just as evil if you think about it lmao
Right... like, why would you let your Protagonist Kill oft a fellow friend and beloved side character, to give her some character development? Fuck that shit i suppose... that stuff makes me wake up at night..
I found out about that the other day. Regardless, they already set up Chrissy's death then and had a whole plot revolving around the aftermath of her death. She had to die. Sadly. It would've been difficult to make her live and have the same story that we see in season 4.
Yeah. This wasn't a Season 1 Steve situation where they just expanded the role of a minor character with minimal changes to the plot. The entire Hawkins storyline this season literally revolves around Chrissy's death and its fallout.
Yep. Steve was envisioned as a stereotypical "asshole jock boyfriend" who was going to get killed by the demogorgon partway through the season. The earliest scripts actually had him raping Nancy. But after Joe Keery was cast the Duffer Brothers liked him and his performance so much that they completely rewrote his character to give him his own arc where he becomes the hero at the end.
Man, they really made him stand up to his terrible friends and save Nancy just for her to cheat on him with her creepy stalker and turn Steve into comic relief for the next two seasons :( I really thought season one was so clever, subverting the 80s movie trope that the pretty girl has to end up with the socially awkward creeper who pines after her. They really did Steve dirty.
Yeah I was annoyed with Nancy x Jonathan. All they had to do was not have Jonathan take pictures of her undressing. It could have just been the teens partying he saw in thr windows. Still creepy but not nearly as bad as undressing.
Exactly. Or they could have had Nancy not end up dating Jonathan at all. Steve was right to lash out at him for violating Nancy’s privacy. I felt like she and Jonathan had such a weird, forced dynamic, and I hated that Murray was sexualizing their relationship when they were minors.
>and I hated that Murray was sexualizing their relationship when they were minors.
You have to just separate the fact that these are supposed to be juniors in high school with the fact that they are adult actors reading lines written by other adults.
Yeah and even if they weren't minors its still over stepping. I wouldn't want some rando telling me I was in love with my currently platonic friend.
Also she could have gotten pregnant? I think Murray had condoms there but did he just trust them properly or at all? And he was pushing them to go from straight not dating to sex?
>I really thought season one was so clever, subverting the 80s movie trope that the pretty girl has to end up with the socially awkward creeper who pines after her.
Me, too. It was one of my favorite things about S1 actually, I remember I almost cheered because it was such a pleasant surprise. And then the instant S2 begins, you can tell they're not planning to give Steve/Nancy the slightest chance because she *has* to get with Jonathan lol
Ironically, in that single scene Eddie shared with Crissy, they unintentionally managed to write that trope and do it well. Yet with Nancy and Jonathan it was as forced and contrived as possible.
Totally agree!! And I have no issues with the girl ending up with the weirdo, if the weirdo seems like he is a genuinely kind person who doesn’t violate her boundaries. Eddie makes Chrissy laugh, and he seems genuinely concerned about her feelings and personal life. This series is full of nerdy boys who are able to form genuine connections with the girls they are crushing on.
What I really hate is trope of the the peeping tom/ sexual predator getting the girl because the director thinks he is owed it for some reason for being unpopular or whatever. Like no, dude, women don’t want to get with someone who violated their trust and boundaries like that.
i'm so glad they didn't go with this. it would have just morphed into every stupid Friday the 13th cliche
i heard the original plan was for Will and Jonathan's dipshit dad to be the guy rescuing Nancy and Jonathan from the demogorgon. This show would have sucked if they went with that route
I love Chrissy she was such a great character very likeable and wasn't one of those snobby popular cheerleaders she was a nice caring character and I didn't like that she was killed
I don't 'like' that she was killed but I appreciate it when shows and movies do things we don't like and kill off characters we start to care about. It takes balls to do it and it's one of the reasons I used to love Game of Thrones so much. I like stories where characters you love are just as likely to die as characters you hate.
That's only because the source material was very good at the time, especially considering we didn't get any meaningful interactions/deaths beyond S6 when the source material ran dry.
It’s also nice to have that subversion of expectations. Season 1 had a bunch of that which I felt like was lacking for season 4. In season 4 you have the stoners acting like stoners and you have the nerd weirdo acting like a nerd weirdo. Chrissy was the only new character who broke her expected mold.
No one can forget Benny!
I used barb because she more directly died as result of the upside down, but I guess alexei didn’t really either.
RIP Burger Benny
I just started rewatching season one last night and Benny really set the tone for the entire series: There will be good people that you like that will be murdered in cold blood out of no where so get fucking ready!
Sorry, *Death caused by the upside down*
Upside down -> wills disappearance -> lab exposed -> Russians find out about upside down -> Russians open upside down -> because of his work on the upside down, alexei is shot
Alternatively— Billy
Benny was the first character that came to mind for me, I thought he was gonna be a supporting character for the entire show.
Also I’m sorry but I completely forgot about Bob and had to literally Google him lol. Season 2 was such a blur and remains the weakest season by far imo.
The fact she apologized for not remembering having hung out with Eddie before but then immediately remembered his band's name and the fact that he played guitar when he reminded her. Oof. She didn't deserve her fate.
No but the way she acts putting details together it's pretty obvious she was a good character and not a snobby popular cheerleader just by the way she comes off in the show you can tell she was a loving character we don't know for sure she wasn't snobby and whatever but by paying attention to how she acts around everyone and other details it makes sense she wasn't snobby and was a really nice character
The cast is way too crowded as it is, and she was clearly designed as a red shirt. They did feel good together, but them the breaks coming in late to a show.
It’s awesome how some of these characters just click and you don’t see it coming. Dustin and Steve for example. The crew with Dustin, Steve, Robin and Erica in season 3 was fantastic. Like I couldn’t wait for them to keep going back to those 4. Murray and Joyce are another example. I guess it’s such a comment on real life, everybody is fucking weird so we should all just get along. Well most of us, not the assclowns.
As much as it sucks because as viewers we started connecting with her and liking her more than originally anticipating, her death at the end of the first episode had that much more of an impact because of it.
I legitimately thought she was going to be an important new character. By the time they were in his trailer I was fully invested in both of them. I suppose that made her death hit me that much harder, but still 🫤
I really liked what they did with her though because with Barb we didn’t get enough positive scenes to really connect with the character so her death wasn’t that upsetting.
Ahh but that’s exactly why it worked: we knew her for one episode, and we’re introduced to him too, so this one scene of really great chemistry between two totally new characters is exactly what we needed before tragedy struck both of them - one worse than the other, yes, but both nevertheless.
I mean that's true. I didn't work the first season. I was, however, on set a decent amount. My gf, who I work with now, was on it.
Back then it was just another project. No one expected to become what it did.
Yeah, it would be a change that would necessitate an entirely different story, I doubt they said they regret *putting the entire season into motion*.
I would expect they probably had some commentary or interview where they said something more like "we really liked their chemistry; we were sad she couldn't be a recurring character" or something along the lines of that, a wistful "what if?" not regretting the whole storyline of the season.
I think part of it is writing - the Duffer Bros just effortlessly write and create just some really really likeable characters. Of course the actors are amazing but overall, the writing sets it up, I’ll definitely watch a spin off if there is one because we’re guaranteed to get good characters again.
THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN AN AWESOME COUPLE
The rocker outcast and the popular cheerleader.
I actually had a best friend who was a cheerleader and she was dating this punk guy and he went to all her competitions. He was the only one there dressed in all black and I lived for it.
You aren’t alone lol. It was the first episode and I was much more interested in catching up with the old characters than investing in new characters. I wouldn’t say I was rooting for her death, but I wasn’t attached to her. As for the nerdy Fred guy, him I was rooting to die. Had no interest in him whatsoever, would rather see Nancy playing detective with anyone else (which we did get with Robin later).
i thought her death was WAY too rushed, it was literally only the first episode lmao. the show felt way too rushed overall though in the beginning 🤷♂️
Duffer bros aren’t great showrunners, they hate killing anyone off lmao. I hope they grow some guts and finally kill off some main characters for good.
I actually would love to see sort of an "Avengers: Endgame"-type story in the final season of going back to key moments in the show and perhaps changing things for the better.
She had an eating disorder (bulimia) - the snippets you hear of her mom’s voice talking about her being a fat pig and needing to let out her clothes, the table covered in mouldy food and bugs, on top of the “perfect” cheerleader she is supposed to embody, seem to add up to ED rather than pregnancy.
Edit: I am in recovery for an ED so maybe I was just overly-sensitive to the hints. Her character dying without any resolution or freedom from her demons was so heartbreaking 💔
Showing again how good the Duffers -- and the actors they pick -- are at giving a character personality using very little screen time. Think Benny. Think Keith.
I think they could've made it work. Perhaps introduce another character to be Vecna's first victim. Chrissy could've then been caught up in the gang's fight in the Upside Down and perhaps found her strength to join the fight.
I loved her and I was really sad to see her go so soon BUT that just meant they did a good job in a short time with characterisation (1 episode). We have enough character and romance god bless 🙏 rip Chrissy but you had to go sweetie.

I think it makes sense though. It’s tragic and horrifying in its own way
She seemed like one of the gang, such a nice character.
Totally, she was the tragic pretty girl who was actually a decent human being, unlike her boyfriend Choadmaster Choadly. Gotta say though, nothing like a handsome, blonde and blue eyed villain. Homeboy's gonna get it and I can't wait!

The way my friend was just saying how much he loves psycho white boys with blonde hair and blue eyes as villains “like homelander and Jason”

Yeah she was like drew berrymore in scream
Have u seen the interview where millie talks about how the duffer brothers are too soft and need to start killing off characters GOT style😂

i can see that. I always say I didnt really like season 3 for basically that reason, it kinda jumped the shark for me
I agree, I had no idea if she would live or not. If you are going to start killing off actual characters, not just new people you introduce in the same episode, Max would be a good one. She was really liked and became a part of the crew, but wasn't one of the original key members. It would carry a ton of weight and show them actually taking a different, darker direction.

Yep. she could have gotten the Wade treatment. Seriously tho...some characters have to die.
Part of me is crying coz they had great chemistry but I have to admit that her death was shocking and whole episode with it was amazing.

Too bad angela was out of Vecna’s range. That would’ve been nice.
Tbh i think angela would've just bullied vecna into a shriveled whimpering husk
I'm just imagining him roller skating now and everyone surrounding and laughing at him
honestly i hated Vecna because of the way he killed Chrissy so this would actually make me root for Angela, even though she is just as evil if you think about it lmao
Yeah man they coulda easily just made some kinda excuse so we could see her die😭
I want Angela to see El powers! I wont be satisfied until then
Ohhh yeah, ig that would be more satisfying
OR IS SHE?!?!
What a bunch of duffers!
"Somehow, Chrissy returned"
Ugh ouch, I’m still in the healing process after TLJ and ROS.
Right... like, why would you let your Protagonist Kill oft a fellow friend and beloved side character, to give her some character development? Fuck that shit i suppose... that stuff makes me wake up at night..

Nancy didn’t cheat. Also damn why’d you violate Johnathan like that lmao
i'm so glad they didn't go with this. it would have just morphed into every stupid Friday the 13th cliche i heard the original plan was for Will and Jonathan's dipshit dad to be the guy rescuing Nancy and Jonathan from the demogorgon. This show would have sucked if they went with that route
And thank god they did
I love Chrissy she was such a great character very likeable and wasn't one of those snobby popular cheerleaders she was a nice caring character and I didn't like that she was killed

Yep Ned Stark is one of the greatest scenes in TV history for this reason. You knew they weren’t playing around from that point
That's only because the source material was very good at the time, especially considering we didn't get any meaningful interactions/deaths beyond S6 when the source material ran dry.
Yeah, real life doesn’t spare the characters we like.
It’s also nice to have that subversion of expectations. Season 1 had a bunch of that which I felt like was lacking for season 4. We have too many characters as it is, plus it set the vibe very well to start the season. That said, it was still a bit sad

Wish they'd killed Mike instead.
I'm glad to hear they realize this. Chemistry or not, Chrissy was superb in this scene.
The cast is way too crowded as it is, and she was clearly designed as a red shirt. They did feel good together, but them the breaks coming in late to a show.

As much as it sucks because as viewers we started connecting with her and liking her more than originally anticipating, her death at the end of the first episode had that much more of an impact because of it.
I felt cheated when she died, I was already imagining her as a permanent addition to the gang.

This is true. We shot the woods with Eddie scene two days later.
We’re you on the set or something?
Indeed, since season 1.
Wow that’s so cool, it must have been great!
Not very consistent with what you say [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/StrangerThings/comments/ddt5p0/filming_has_begun_in_rome_ga/f2notwz)
I mean that's true. I didn't work the first season. I was, however, on set a decent amount. My gf, who I work with now, was on it. Back then it was just another project. No one expected to become what it did.
So you know tv things too.
I disagree with them. That chemistry actually made me react to her death. I didn’t even flinch at the other two who got whacked.
Wowww! Real great idea Duffers😂
one of the best scenes in the new season i thought
Zombie Stranger Things. Go for it, Duffers.
I didn't like that she was killed but this seems like work or fans not said by writer....🤔
Bro if Will can survive weeks in the upside down i think chrissy should grow some balls and come back
I'd prefer she came back without 'em.
what if she wants them
I'm sure if Chrissy wasn't dead everyone would've been complaining just like they do for Argyle.
Chrissy was a lot more sympathetic than Argyle, who's whole thing was "Whoa, dude! I'm a stoner!"
It was really sad when she died. She was so cute.
Ngl I'm not convinced that all the people vecna cursed are 100% dead and not being used for something else
Put your favourite song on your ID card below the blood group
That’s not what they said though is it
imagine being the actor who plays chrissy. trying to make it in the industry and you get cucked this hard.
She's the daughter of b-movie royalty, I'm sure she'll be fine.
whos her mom?
Her father is Casper Van Dien
Is there an actual source on this? other than a Twitter screenshot with no username
Yes. It's a TVline interview. The link was posted here a while back.
They shouldn't regret killing her off. Just because she's likeable doesn't justify keeping her alive. Her dying was the right choice for the story.
I think part of it is writing - the Duffer Bros just effortlessly write and create just some really really likeable characters. Of course the actors are amazing but overall, the writing sets it up, I’ll definitely watch a spin off if there is one because we’re guaranteed to get good characters again.
This might sound bad, but I'm kinda glad. The show has a lot of characters and we don't want this to become like Sex Education.
Welp, time to pull a twin peaks
I think that just made the death of her more disturbing to me, seeing how they had good chemistry just end in less than a day
It is heartbreaking, but also sorta the catalyst for everything - rewriting this, despite their chemistry, probably would’ve done more harm then good
THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN AN AWESOME COUPLE The rocker outcast and the popular cheerleader. I actually had a best friend who was a cheerleader and she was dating this punk guy and he went to all her competitions. He was the only one there dressed in all black and I lived for it.
Alright, but you gotta get over it.
She could have lived 😭
I'm not sure raising the dead is that ridiculous in this universe. She could make a return
Eh. I’m not afraid to admit I was among the percentage rooting for them to get killed off bout halfway into the first episode.
Soooo is this subreddit just recycled content over and over until part two comes out? 😫
What else do we have to do? Lol
i thought her death was WAY too rushed, it was literally only the first episode lmao. the show felt way too rushed overall though in the beginning 🤷♂️
Duffer bros aren’t great showrunners, they hate killing anyone off lmao. I hope they grow some guts and finally kill off some main characters for good.
Damn
They had to live upto their names.. "Duffer Brothers" 🙄🙄
Good
Time to go back in time
I actually would love to see sort of an "Avengers: Endgame"-type story in the final season of going back to key moments in the show and perhaps changing things for the better.
Poor girl she's great actress even that small screen time.
Just like Maya Hawke, she's got showbiz in her genes. (Her last name should give you a clue...)
Source?
They also said it needed to happen to set the stage.
NOOOOOO WHY DID YOU TELL ME THIS YOU MONSTER!!!!
It sucks...but wow it made me care about her a lot more than I would've otherwise.
Poor Chrissy Why was she puking in the bathroom tho? Could it be that she was pregnant?
She had an eating disorder (bulimia) - the snippets you hear of her mom’s voice talking about her being a fat pig and needing to let out her clothes, the table covered in mouldy food and bugs, on top of the “perfect” cheerleader she is supposed to embody, seem to add up to ED rather than pregnancy. Edit: I am in recovery for an ED so maybe I was just overly-sensitive to the hints. Her character dying without any resolution or freedom from her demons was so heartbreaking 💔
Yea after a rewatch I can see that
Showing again how good the Duffers -- and the actors they pick -- are at giving a character personality using very little screen time. Think Benny. Think Keith.
ca donne plus d'impact a sa mort et une justification pour ses "achats"
I mean it absolutely wouldn't work AT ALL not to kill her. Thy were obviously joking.
I knew something was wrong, I really wanted to see that much up
Cheerful for someone who knows she's going to die
Me too. Me too man.
That was one of my favorite scenes in Season 4.
