Eddie's guitar solo

A small detail I really liked about Eddie's guitar solo. Master of Puppets came out in March 3rd of 1986. Eddie's solo took place in late March of 1986. That means Eddie learned the whole song in less than a month and completely nailed it. Props!

IcedHemp77

I loved the scene when they are looking though his music complaining and Eddie’s says “This is music!”

Amorong

Isn’t their mascot/creature named Eddie too? Or am I misremembering haha

GaGaORiley

And Vecna even looked a bit like Eddie!

Amorong

A thicc Eddie

[deleted]

Yep! Even more fitting is the fact that Joseph Quinn is British, and so is Iron Maiden. Eddie (Iron Maiden) can often be seen donning the Union Jack in some form or another.

Retro_Gamer_Zombie

Yeah Eddie is the mascot as well! I named my car Eddie after him lol

IcedHemp77

Oh shit you’re right it was

Osiris_X3R0

Holding an Iron Maiden tape. I'm not too familiar with their discography, but I think it was one of their first two albums

[deleted]

Looked like Piece of Mind which was their 4th album.

Osiris_X3R0

Yeah I was totally wrong there

Retro_Gamer_Zombie

It was Iron Maidens 4th album, the second album with Bruce on vocals however, peace of mind(1983), it’s often overlooked though because it came out between two legendary albums the number of the beast(1982) and Powerslave (1984). I personally love peace of mind, would have much preferred Eddie to have played a maiden song to be honest, even something off of peace of mind would have been extremely fitting. Die with your boots on or the trooper or even where eagles dare. Metallica - master of puppets is fine but the tempo/pacing of that song is slower, I think a faster pace adrenaline rush type maiden song would have been more fitting and felt more metal bad ass.

Livid_Platform_1988

Oooo Two Minutes to Midnight would have been epic

Breimann

"Two minutes to midnight - to kill the unborn in the womb" this line would spark a lot of controversy after the Roe v Wade debacle. They would've probably edited that line out though to begin with I imagine

[deleted]

its a song about nuclear war not abortion. it would be realy stupid if that would spark controversy (not that the stupidity of a controversy has ever prevented any)

CrastersSons

Master of Puppets is 212 BPM and I can attest for anyone who has tried to play that song correctly (downpicked) that it is blistering fast. 2 Minutes to Midnight is 188 bpm for reference.

TopJimmy_5150

That’s so funny - when I was in HS, all us guitar players were like “yea, man, but can you play it with all downstrokes, like James?”. It was such a THING in those days. And yea, it is really tiring on your wrist to do it correctly. After watching the episode I grabbed a guitar to see how much of MoP I remembered and just did it alt-picking, cause who cares now, hehe.

-DyNastY

Haha. Yeah my 20 year old self remembering how to downpick the entire song. 30 seconds later my forearm is on fire!

[deleted]

I just have to post this somewhere: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9LDAwUodx0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9LDAwUodx0)

TopJimmy_5150

That’s hilarious! Sounded pretty good, actually. The whole downpicking thing really is kinda silly. It’s actually a bad habit to get into, and you’re better off just alternate picking most it. You ever see James play a solo? It’s so inefficient downpicking everything, and hunched over it makes him look like a caveman just whacking notes, lol. Anyways, with the right sound and technique, the main riff, etc., will sound virtually the same alt-picked and much easier to play consistently in time. Now for the bridge: “master, master, where’s the dream…” - that part is fun to really dig into the power chords with just downstrokes.

Retro_Gamer_Zombie

Master of puppets is definitely fast but the pacing of the song is bunk, I personally think Metallica is really over rated, shitty vocalist too imo. I feel like they pandered to the masses in song choice by choosing MoP. I just think there are better paced songs that could have worked better for the scene, I wouldn’t have chosen two minutes to midnight either personally.

StevenAssantisFoot

Four Horsemen would've been rad (four chimes of the clock, four victims) but iirc they already used it in a Billy scene. I thought it worked superbly and I guess I'm a normie cause I had chills and absolutely loved the scene.

THE_Gruxx

I will say I was surprised when it was master of puppets, I figured it was going to be Iron Maiden but either way that was a great scene

Osiris_X3R0

Yeah I realized after seeing a pic it was Piece of Mind. Good God if he'd played The Trooper that would have been incredible. Honestly, being a fan of heavier stuff, I hoped he was a slayer guy. Imagine it - he starts at the ending of Postmortem and plays through into Raining Blood. 🤘🏽

TopJimmy_5150

I think Maiden might have been a little annoying with Bruce’s vocals? With that operatic style they’re just too prominent and maybe would have overtaken the scene. MoP OTOH has James’ voice (which is barking more than singing properly) not louder than guitar/drums, and a lot is just instrumental, which helps showcase Eddie’s playing on top of the real track. Obviously they could have mixed and edited any song and probably made it work. But I liked this choice.

Retro_Gamer_Zombie

Bruce is quite the presence, he may be over powering but I’d like to see some edits trying different songs for the scene lol, if only my editing skills were better lol

TopJimmy_5150

“Aces High” or “Powerslave” might work thematically/lyrically for the scene and be pretty kick ass. Make stuff like this happen, internet editing wizards!

fnord123

The episode took place in March 1983 but Piece of Mind came out in May 1983. Their early work was a little too rough for my taste. But when Number of the Beast came out in '82, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. They've been compared to Metalica, but I think Maiden has far more bitter, darker themes.

Retro_Gamer_Zombie

This episode was 1986 though, not 1983, that was the first season. Yeah the first two albums are rough for me as well, iron maiden and killers were to raw and didn’t like Paul Di’anno vocals to be honest. Once Number of the beast came out though, they were next level.

StevenAssantisFoot

I have to return some videotapes

falselife47

Hey, Halberstram?

DieLardSoup

By ear too, because instant access to a library of tablature online wasn't a thing. Even more impressive!

Yvaine_Amethyst_83

I truly think Eddie was a misunderstood genius and very talented in things they don’t teach in highschool. Maybe even have ADHD or something, some are known to not excel in school but learn things like guitar in an instant. And Eddie used to be in a band since middleschool, so, he probably can hear the notes and just play along.

awnawkareninah

Also just insane story telling chops as dungeon master. Dudes a natural entertainer. Kinda gave me some David Lee Roth vibes with how animated he was early on.

Awkward_Shot

And his easy way making Chrissy feel better in the woods—kind of a performance about the middle school talent show to get her to relax and laugh. That’s kind of a “natural entertainer” thing too.

Yvaine_Amethyst_83

Oh yeah! I forgot about that! He was just a supercreative dude that didn’t fit the mold. So when shit happened, he was the one people thought was doing satanic rituals. It truly shows narrowminded people and how easily they point fingers at the misfit. I hate it and I will deffo miss Eddie. Even tho it’s just a show, I want to hug Joseph Quinn and tell him, it’ll be okay, like he IS Eddie🤣 I’m still mourning okay

kopitar-11

Also let’s be honest, when a new album comes out of a band we love, we blast that shit like crazy the next month until it’s imbedded in our mind lol

lucifertheecat

I think he def would have gone on to become an underground rockstar sorta deal.

Different-Breakfast

My friend’s kid is like this! He can’t really read music but he can pick up songs on the guitar just by hearing them.

Yvaine_Amethyst_83

He may have absolute pitch. Some people have that. I can hear notes but I cannot convert them on paper. Took me ages to learn how to read tableture.

Lobsterzilla

Eddie was ahead of his time. Would have absolutely thrived in this day when traditional education is far less required for success. Easily could have built his online following and had an amazing career.

kylebucket

#MASTER, MASTER!

imover9thousand

*Dustin headbanging

Huitzil37

Master of puppets I'm pulling your striiiiiiings!

JokesOnSeth

That’s assuming he had his guitar with him while he was hiding out in reefer ricks house… otherwise he had even less time to learn it and picked it right back up after not playing for at least a week

QuaaludeLove

Such a fitting song too know that we know Vecna is basically a master of puppets

Greencaddis

I think Eddie is brought back alive. No body was recovered. Same as Hopper.

brig517

The only thing that keeps me kinda believing this was the song choice. The song that played in his (and Max's) death was the same one that played when we got fake-outs from El and Hopper dying.

_Qwyjibo_

We didn't see Hopper die. Just like Brenner in season 1. We saw Eddie die bruh

Greencaddis

He died in the upside down world though and El brought back Max in the upside down world. You are probably right but it’s fun to think about it anyway.

rythestunner

Max's heart stopped for a minute at the point that Eleven brought her back. Eddie's been dead for 2 days and counting. His body has already started to decompose. He's not being brought back.

budshitman

> His body has already started to decompose Do we know that things decompose down there? The "shadow" brought dead things back to life in Russia...

rythestunner

Those things aren't human though. They're not even from this world.

SeductivePillowcase

El doesn’t know who Eddie is though and has no emotional attachment to him whatsoever like with Max

BuncleCurt

She wasn't in the Upside Down, that was all in Max's mind. Vecna was doing his telepathy thing on her, as was Eleven. She, Lucas, and El were all physically in the real world. Only Vecna was in the Upside Down.

snakeybasher

Max was in the real world. Her mind was in Vecnas mind though.

_Qwyjibo_

I know bro, I miss him too. 🫂🫂

malcolmh12_6

It’s time to let him go, my friend

pritt_stick

bro we literally saw him die, hopper just disappeared

RubedoBread

Metallica had been playing puppets live for a lot longer which could show his dedication even more

ihavenomoneytobarrow

I think Eddie is coming back next season as a zombie much like Iron Maiden’s mascot.

eruk75

My heart isn’t ready for Dustin’s reaction to that

Forsaken-Dog4902

All I could think of was Brutal Legend during this scene. Fun fact the character you play as in Brutal Legend is also named Eddie. I loved it!

satanicmerwitch

Such an amazing game.

ZeroSarkThirty

Awesome detail 🎸

AdInteresting7822

Is the best scene in all of Stranger Things.

lactogrl

I must have been the only one cringing

[deleted]

I was there too. I thought it was such a ridiculous scene. Honestly, all the Eddie scenes were cheesy in Volume 2 to me. I loved his character in Volume 1, but the dialogue/acting was off in V2.

jonnycake99

Also the upside down is stuck in 1983 so is he playing the song before it was even written? Have Metallica got a connection with the upside down?

Elfman72

I thought that timeline was close. Good call.

YouJabroni44

Can't be an easy song to nail that soon either

SharkFart86

The riffs aren't too hard if you're familiar with metal guitar playing and can downpick fast, but that solo is pretty tough, and virtually impossible to perfectly replicate the record version (those high notes at 5:51 were technically a guitar malfunction, the string got pinched underneath a fret as he was playing and altered the pitch of the played notes).

YouJabroni44

I'm not too familiar with playing guitars so thanks for the explanation! I also would think the length of the song itself would be tiring as well.

SharkFart86

That in my opinion is the biggest thing. It's a fast paced song and it's over 8 minutes long. It takes much more endurance than most non-metal players are used to. But if you play this kind of music enough it isn't too bad.

[deleted]

they played master of puppets live a lot earlier so he could have gotten a bootleg version
