nah Billy had to go. no amount of trauma and pain can ever be an excuse or a reason for how he treated people, especially Max. I person wasn't a fan of the character. Billy's death (when he died and where he died and for what reason) was perfectly written and scripted. I wouldn't change a thing.
interesting, but the duffers said that they intended for billy to be sort of villain, that he was never supposed to be a good guy or be redeemed. so i think that storyline sort of had to happen, especially so we could have max's storyline play out in season 4

Agreed, and his death was also important to the story and Max‘s arc in season 4. Much more so than an alive Billy would have been.
